๐ Hello! Can you share the subscription ID with me?
I need a Subscription ID - something of the form sub_123
Where do I find that
You should be able to find that in the dashboard
Is it that
No, under the subscription details section there should be a field that says ID - I need that
OK let me log back into the computer
i am very new at this
i have no idea where to find it
sub_1MtwIwFz2WlULTYkILA3CSFC
?
Yup that's it
ok
So now that I'm looking at the subscription - what did you want it to do instead? What exact amount are you wanting to charge for at the end of the trial?
So the sub is $129.99 i gave them a 30% off which brought it down to $90.99 i added the one week free trial and now the new invoice shows $42 to be charged after the week trial which would make it to $129.99
i wanted to give them one week free PLUS a discount of 30%
idk how to figure this out
i have about 30 more people i need to give 1 week free trial
but for them to continue with the discounted price
Do you want them to get 30% off forever? Or just one more time after the trial ends?
just one time after the trial ends
Then you need to re-add a 30% off coupon that has a duration of 1 month (see https://stripe.com/docs/billing/subscriptions/coupons#coupon-duration) when you update the subscription
so will they get 30% off their next sub or no?
They already were charged the right way initially...
No, they'll get the 30% off for all invoices that are generated for a single month - so the first invoice that's generated after the trial is over will be discounted, but the next invoice after that will be past 1 month and won't be discounted
sub_1MuqH6Fz2WlULTYkv73QREpZ
what about this sub for example...
i haven;t applied the 7 day free trial yet
what would be the best way to figure this out
where do i add the 30% coupon
again
If you're updating the subscription through the dashboard you should see a place to "Add coupon" in the update uI
but would they have to input that code?
or it will automatically take of 30% off
is there a way to remove the invoice of $42
so they dont get charged
They (your customer) wouldn't be inputting the code - it would be you modifying the subscription through the dashboard that your customer has no access to
Why d you want to remove the $42 invoice? Don't you want to charge them once the invoice is over?
Yes, i want them to be charged the full amount next time
but i feel like this has gotten so confusing at this point
If you charge them the full amount next time then you'll end up overcharging them:
i mean may 8th they have their next full
price sub
so if i add 30% off now it would be on the $42
correct?
Let's back up for a minute here and make sure we're on the same page using the example sub_1MuqH6Fz2WlULTYkv73QREpZ you gave:
- This subscription was created April 9th and charged $90.99 (30% off)
- You want to immediately give them a 7 day trial starting April 10th w/ the month long 30% off coupon. If you do this, we'll credit back a portion of the $90.99 because they haven't used it. This credit will automatically be applied to their next invoice.
- When the trial is over on April 17th, we'll charge them 30% of the full price (because you added the month-long coupon), but the credit back that they got when the trial was added will ALSO be included in the invoice so they'll be charged much less than 90.99
- On May 17th they'll be charged the full price
Does that make sense?
It shows you guys did credit back $87
and April 17th there is an invoice for $42
which would make the $129
so if i give them 30% off on the $42
that is only $12.60
so the math isn't mathing haha
If you had the coupon then I believe it'd do the 30% off FIRST (so it'd go from $129 down to $90.99) and then the credit back would apply so that you'd charge $90.99 - $87
why didn't the free trial take effect on the initial price i charged the customer
instead of doin this
if i charged the $90 with a coupon...it shouldve just stayed at that price instead of giving a free trial but then the price was back to the original $129
Are you asking why you need to give a freetrial at all? Or are you asking why the coupon was only applied once?
When you create coupons that only apply "once" we only apply them to a single Invoice - we wouldn't carry them forward unless you had a coupon with a longer duration
No I am saying why the free trial wasnt just applied instead of recalculating back to $129
Were you expecting a free trial to happen automatically for your initial subscription w/ the 30% coupon?
when i applied the free trial i thought it was going to automatically do that
You mean when you update the Subscription? Or when you first created it?
once i added the free trial after the charge
I think you're mixing up a few things -
- the free trial is completely separate and unrelated to the coupon. Adding a free trial doesn't "lock in" the price that the user was paying for when the trial started
- like I mentioned before, you were using a one-time only coupon which was immediately consumed as soon as the subscription and initial invoice was created. If you wanted the coupon to apply to any changed within that month long period then you needed to give it a duration of one month
ok...so i think the best way for me to go about this is contact these customers and offer them a refund on their next subscription that will end up being the same as a free week trial...
but this is the only guy that i have already applied the one week trial to and it shows a credit balance of $87.
correct?
so technically he was just charged $3?
Yes
ok so did you guys refund this money? or is it in Stripe?
No money was refunded - it's still in stripe
Right now that credit is reflected in the Customer's credit balance (see https://stripe.com/docs/billing/customer/balance) and it'll be automatically applied to their next invoice
It's April 14th - if you look at that subscription in the dashboard (https://dashboard.stripe.com/subscriptions/sub_1MtwIwFz2WlULTYkILA3CSFC) you can see all that information about the next invoice right there
and you still have time to add on the 30% coupon if you want
idk why im so confused as to why there is a credit balance of $87 but yet we will charge him another $42 but if i give him 30% off the $42 that is only $12
- On April 6th they paid 90.99
- On April 7th they were credited back for $87.95 but not refunded (it's kept in their balance to use later)
So at that point they've paid for around a day of the subscription (90.99 - 87.95 = 3.04)
- If you apply a new 30% off coupon then on April 14th (after the trial is over) they'll be charged another $90.99 (30% off of 129.99). But since they have the credit we would charge them $90.99 - 87.95 = $3.04 for a new month of the Subscription.
So if you add that all up:
- Their card will be charged $90.99 (on April 6th) + $3.04 (on April 14th) for the time period between April 6th - May 14th (the initial day + the 7 day trial + the new month)
So in total they'll be charged $90.99 + $3.04 = $94.03 for a month + an extra day of the subscription
but their invoice shows $42 --that is why I am confused
if i do 30% off, wont it take it off the $42 ?
It only says $42 because you didn't re-add the 30% coupon
As I mentioned earlier - if you were to re-add the 30% coupon it'll FIRST discount the $129.99 down to $90.99 and THEN it'll subtract the $87.95
ok, so then they will only pay another $3?
Yes
instead of $42
correct
ok I see it is showing up now...so I would need to contact the customer to tell them they will be getting a charge of $3.04 because it is prorated on 1 day
yup
is there a way i can email all these customers and to let them know there will be another small charge due to it being prorated? or no?
mass email?
We do offer a setting (https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/billing/automatic) you can enable to send emails for upcoming renewals, but it isn't very specific and wouldn't mention anything about how much they'd be charged for. If you want to send an email with that level of detail you'd need to send it yourself

ok thanks so much for your help...
๐
one last question... I am sorry... Since the free trial already started in the server, if I want to give this person a free trial, what would i need to do
I havent given them the free trial yet but they were already charged, do I give them the remaining 5 days of the free trial
then go back in and add 30% off?
how can i make it where i give them the discount so it comes out to be 0% that they would owe on their next invoice
would i just give them a higher percentage like 35% instead?
Are you just asking how can you make sure their next invoice (after the trial is over) comes out to $0?
yes...if I go in and add 4 days left of the free trial, and then apply a certain percentage so that their invoice on april 14 would be $0.00 or have a slight credit balance
so they aren't charged the $3.04
i will take the loss on that
i just dont want to confuse them with a new small charge
Instead of messing with the percentages I'd suggest adding to their customer credit balance (which you can do through the dashboard https://stripe.com/docs/billing/customer/balance#modifying). You have two options:
- Add the 30% off coupon and then give them an addition $3.04 in their customer credit balance (so that they have $90.99 credit total which will be applied to the April 14th invoice)
- Or don't add the coupon at all and give them an addition $42.04 (so that they have a total of $129.99 which will be applied to the April 14th invoice)
Ah - I thought you were talkng about the Subscription you had that was already trialing
no this one here didnt get the trial... i just added it
Yes, since it's been a few days the amounts will be slightly different
correct
and it says $0 for the next Invoice because that's the invoice that was JUST generated when the trial was created
After the trial is over it'll go back to a non-0 amount
Yes, you can just add whatever amount you need to the credit balance
yes
Thanks so much. You can close this
