Ok then you can use this guide https://stripe.com/docs/connect/standard-accounts
Yup, done that
But, when I follow a link to connect, I am taken through the whole onboarding flow
I can't just "login" with an existing account and just connect the two
in that case you might need to use OAuth https://stripe.com/docs/connect/oauth-reference
I need to fill out business information etc etc all over again for the account that wants to connect into mine, even if there is already an existing stripe account
OK, so this flow is possible? To join the accounts without requiring them to create a new express account?
That's great news.
I then want to use destination charges to that standard account 😬
awesome - I do that with express accounts, presume no difference with a standard connected in this way?
It appears to not be recommended but presumably it works?
it works right
yeah I mean my express destination charges work fine, just checking it works if they're standard accounts connected
it's not usually recommended because normally Standard Accounts are in charge of more things like Refunds and disputes
Yeah, I read that. But we can still also do that on their behalf via the API presumably?
yes sure, sorry I thought I sent the message ages ago 🤦
Hi 👋 I'm stepping in for @stiff vault . While you can use Destination charges on Standard Accounts we really don't recommend it.
OK... why is that? It seems that the alternative is that any user that wants to connect needs to always create a new express account so that it stays scoped to that connected account?
What is it you are trying to achieve here?
@quartz bramble let's chat in here
Great, thanks
Basically I want a user who has an existing stripe account to be able to connect to my account without having to go through a signup to create a new express account, whilst at the same time using destination charges
So if they have an existing account that would be considered a standard account not an express account
You could connect it to your platform as a standard account
However, as my colleague mentioned, destination charges are not recommended (even though it's technically possible)
Let me get a list of reasons for you
For a Standard platform using destination charging, the initial liability for chargebacks now falls to the platform instead of sitting with their connected accounts as funds are first debited from the platform’s balance. Note: Given it’s a Standard platform, if their connected accounts go negative due to refunds + reverse transfer after funds have been paid out, that negative balance will not be the responsibility of the platform. However, as a Standard platform they cannot use account debits to pull back any other funds (i.e. fees associated with chargebacks). A Standard platform typically chooses their account type so they don’t need to think about liability, but this setup means they should also invest in preventing fraud (typically something a Custom platform wants/is willing to take on). Additionally, Standard platforms have limited control over payout timing where they can change the schedule (if they are the controlling platform), but the connected account owner can still create payouts so the platform cannot hold funds/restrict payouts to prevent merchant fraud.
