#Is synergy retroactive?

The wording of Synergy is this:

"...gain a +1 cumulative bonus on melee attack and melee damage rolls for each other model in the battlegroup that hit an enemy model with a melee attack this turn while in the spellcasters control range"

This is also relevant to the unlimited caster Caine3 who's feat is "for each other model in his battlegroup that hit an enemy model with a ranged attack this turn while in Caine's control range"

Precedence for rules being retroactive is with sprint.

So the question is, if syntherion had road to war up and enough of his battlegroup went, or if Caine had enough of his battlegroup go before him, and then Synetherion puts up Synergy / Caine feats, is the bonus set straight to +3/+3 as if it was building while it wasn't up, since the conditions for building the bonus have been met prior? (Models in the battlegroup hit enemy models while in the control range)

No. It is not and cannot be retroactive, if one thinks through the implications.

(As a thought exercise, consider this: if it were retroactive, why would only part of the rule be retroactive? How do you go back and potentially rewrite the game state multiple times to account for ever-escalating retroactive damage?)

This was formerly answered on the Community Hub, but as that is gone, it is impossible to link to the ruling.

As such: @karmic wyvern , you're needed.
