Ah!
Wait, do tactical marines all get pistols or only the sgt? And if he's got a normal bolter does that remove the pistol?
Might need to rebuild the 3 sgts I've got done real quick! 🤣
No. Except if Gear Ask for a change, sarg got a bolter by default.
Mine are bolter, pistol (as in all marines by default) and dagger
Dagger being a dedicated mêlée weapon (not the basic close combat), it got the +1 A because of dual weilding with the pistol (which have their own separate rule about giving +1A)
PDF's are available cough
we have chatted a lot in AL chat, I do think that dual LC is absolutely disgusting
makes him a terrifying backfield threat
he can solo whole tactical squads
and if he can't get exodus or some headhunters to snipe the apothecary out first
also if your saboteur is getting charged, when your opponent has +2" on their charge distance, either something has gone incredibly wrong and you misplayed or your opponent is ridiculously lucky
as we have said, he isn't there to shoot a nemesis bolter, he's there to distract your opponent
classic distraction carnifex
the nemesis is for him to keep working as part of head hunters after he's done his work
otherwise its a redundant upgrade I'd argue
pretty sure they all have bolt pistol and bolter by default, sarge included; its just you can exchange his bolter for a melee weapon
looks like he has it all the time
weird
They do, look at the gear in the unit stats line.
Sarg don't lose Bolter just by switch to combi.
So they have it.
It's a wysiwyg MkVI designed for 40k more than 30k issue.
huh, I'm sure I saw an awesome lightning claw conversion recently
I'm gonna have to look it up
might of been yours Raeven
crap, it must of been instagram or facebook, somebody modified the axe praetor and put lightning claws on both his hands
looked incredible
I'm gonna do that for my sabo
Ooh, if you find the pic could you send it my way?
yeah I'll share in alpha legion #992045227693047848
looking bleak at the moment, no idea where I saw it and I didnt save it
man instagram is literally the shittest thing to try and search and find something on
Nope, not mine. But i'm glad you though it was ! 😋

I can't really think of a good rite of war to run with this. It's for a starter game with what I've got built or can build in less than a day.
Looking for any glaringly obvious mistakes or pitfalls that it might have
<@&877304032014794762>
Why master of lies and you have only 2 possible target ?
Was thinking about using it to redeploy the two recon squads and one or both of the non-praetor HQs
Redeploy rotor squads for a better counter deployment too
Also that
A little light on AT. You have any other options you have?
Could also just skip that and let the spartan try to deal@with them
Was thinking about swapping the lernaean terminators for normal ones with a mix of chainfists and lightning claws
Though as far as I can tell, most of the people I'll be facing this time around won't have much in the way of armor
Well, the most that people I'll play have a spartan from the age of darkness box
Should be on even keel then.
Gotcha, gonna see if I can play enough games to test both out
Related, if I was gonna swap to cataphractii terminators what kinda mix of weapons would you guys suggest?
This was what I was thinking
Cataphractii Terminator squad 175
2 x2 lightning claws
3 chainfists
2 powerfist
Venom sphere
Grenade harness
Plasma blaster?
+2 men
Skip buying the venom sphere if you can get AA for something else. But yeah seems good
AA?
Artificer armor? As far as I can tell nothing would benefit from that, recon squads cant have it on their sgts or I'd have it on them! 🤣
consider a command squad for WS5 and Hydran Exemplar for +1, will handily win close combat, instead of lerneans/cataphractii, add scoring
I'd also stick some kind of melee weapon on the saboteur else he won't do much, especially since if he shoots that nemesis he'll be shot back, and doesn't have a seeker or headhunter to hide in
flare shield is a huge premium, I'd consider a regular land raider but obviously if your building the box that might not be an option
your tacticals are really really expensive
they eat anything you'll lose a lot of points quickly
I dislike chain bayonets on their price / performance, I think you pay a lot to get +1S/Shred on only one attack
what is the nuncio providing for your squads? you don't have any indirect fire, might be able to shave some points there
I'll take that under advisement for the next game, gonna see how my current list goes just cause don't have much time to change it before the game
Actually, got a point on the nuncio vox, can drop it on both and get a power sword and swap the flare shield for hull lascannon on the spartan
I would surely Switch Nuncio Vox for Augury Scanner.
Augury Scanner is. So. Strong.
Augury is the one that means you can't infiltrate within like 18 and have free interceptor, right?
So played the game and the lernaean terminators did absolutely nothing cause they were way too far from the fight, forgot about machine spirit on the spartan and it was a 1v1v1 that was played very weird
Think next time I'll swap the lernaean for a cataphractii squad and command squad for the praetor
Command Squad is the way to go
Tartaros for speed, Cataphractii for tankiness. I like Tartaros for a Command Squad really
Gonna have to go about making a new list I think, probably gonna entirely nix the saboteur for the next game, he took one shot then got killed by a dreadnought in less than a single round of shooting
It also means you can shoot past 24 inches in nightfighting
Which is perfect for your recons, as they can snipe at night
Yep, he should never shoot until he's done some damage somewhere with meltas or charging
He's a distraction
A very, very cheap effective one
The game plan on the Sab is to tie up more expensive units and Shepard things into spaces where they can't swing at your units. Splitting a dreadnought and characters so Headhunters can clean them up is always a great plan
I just don't understand why you'd shoot with him, ever, unless he's already cleaned something up and hiding in a squad
Ah, now that I know that I'll be sure to just have him charge and melta bomb something next time.
Ah, that would be quite useful! Especially against night lords that activate night fighting on the first 2 turns...
Yeh so your recon snipers can actually snipe
Next game I'm dropping the sabeteur, adding in an augury for damn near everything. Gonna see if dropping down to 10 man squads for the tactical marines might be better, depending if I can just pick an objective focused game
Why dropping Saboteur ?
He did basically nothing, and the meta in my area seems to favor night fighting abilities
That's fair, false colours won't actually let you do much but meme but he is a worth is consul upgrade if only for the wargear you get along side em, maybe slap him in a squad of head hunters or seeker to get something out of him if you do take him in the future.
Anyways do always try to make some time for fun.
How did you play him ? Why did he do nothing ?
Saboteur got a lot of diminishing return the more points are played.
Yet "on paper" he should shine like crazy at 2000
There is so much way to value him. From destroying a squad of tacticals to soaking reactions.
"he took one shot then got killed by a dreadnought in less than a single round of shooting"
Like MeticulousOwl said, and it hurt. Though what's wild was I actually won the game by points...had to end it early cause the store kicked us out tho
Yeah, found that out the hard way
But beware, they can be charged/rammed
Gonna be making a whole lotta changes next time I play. Liked what exodus and recon marines can do tho
Well, then it's not the Saboteur who is bad, my bad to say that.
If you shot a Saboteur when he is alone, you definitely has something to improve there.
It's a support squad/tacticals without characters killer, can't be shot at until he as already killed a whole unit.
He shots ONLY when inside Headhunters.
And he is inside Heahunters mostly only when you have no easy target for him to wreck chaos in the backside.
That is a bit of a rude way to say it, fwiw. Saboteurs definitely need some advanced aggression to use properly, and it's a hard technique to practice with a typical XX list.
Wait, whole unit or just shot at all?
Quick Saboteur tutorial, I hope i'll get it right and not too harsh :
there's an implied "if used properly" in that statement
Don't mind harsh critique, I knew nothing going into this
Ah, makes sense
- Check your opponent list. Is there a juicy target, easy to get roll uppon with dual lightning claws (Support Squads, Big tactical Blobs without apothecary, bike potentially) ?
a. Yes, infiltrate him as near as the target. Try to predict to move of your opponent. Bikes can be hard to catch.
b. No, deploy him inside a unit of Headhunters or Seekers (giving them Shroud Bombs) - You infiltrate near a target. Try to brain your opponent with the order of his reactions. Use your saboteur to take away point allotment from his pool, or on the opposite, use another target, always having the Saboteur "GO" threat around each of your action.
- Charge the juicy steak. If he use old the line it's an easy way for you to protect a bigger unit from it. If not it's free win. He can't overwatch you. Let your opponent challenge you if you feel, but you could knock of 1 Ld by Challenging yourself. With 5-6 attacks 2+/4+ Shred Breaching, you will mostly destroy even a 2+ sarg. And you are init 5.
- You will kill a Sergent. Or make around 3-4 wounds to the unit (don't forget you assigne the order of the wound pool. If you have a breaching attack, which you should, assign it before, then other wound will add up to the "Challenge win" counter). They will mostly flee (careful those pesky Word Bearers). You will mostly catch them (init 5 vs init 4).
- Your opponent will then be able to attack your Saboteur. Using Smoke and Mirrors on him turn 2/3 (depending who started) is a very good way to save him if you have another juicy target (maybe an HSS after he killed a Tactical, or maybe to soak up one turn of shooting from a big shooty unit).
What weapons would you recommend on him? I know he can be pretty ok, but I'm bad at the game. First game in like 5+ years so...
I know raeven runs theirs with two lightning claws
I'm wondering where the melee Breaching is coming from, though
It's not Breaching on DLC ?
Well, the AP2 probability. Be it Breaching, Rending or stuff like that.
And I play him DLC + Nemesis Bolter.
iirc lightning claws just get shred but I haven't given their 2.0 profile a good look since my first run of the book so I could be talking out of my ass shrug
It has 3 keywords now.
I'm sure it's Specialist Weapon, Shred and Breaching (6+)
But I'm doubting now ^^
I'm not bringing my rulebook in to work to have more accurate daytime shitposting lol
Lightning claws: melee, shred, rending (6+), specialist weapon
Kinda annoyed that the power dagger doesn't have specialist weapon anymore
Dual claws is less expansive than Claw + Dagger
Well you can't get an extra attack with the dagger anyways
I was thinking dual claws+dagger
You can't
Dagger is a power weapon you have to trade something against.
Yet you trade both pistol and ccw for DLC
Nah, characters can just flat-out take one
Yeah, it's a pretty extreme edge-case for when you have to hit at I6
Against a EC Praetor ? 😮
Melee with an EC praetor? Just roll over and take it like a man… because an EC praetor in melee WANTED to be in melee ðŸ˜
Its just a bad time
Best way to deal with an EC Praetor you ask? Nemisis bolters from 2km away 😂
As it should be
Oh yeah, definitely. I think if it had specialist weapon it would see a bit more play cause you could use it with a powerfist, thunderhammer, or lightning claws and get an extra attack. Tho if you were to use it with a normal power weapon....maybe make it a backup weapon or something so it always gives the extra attack. I'll admit, I do just want more chances to stab
5 pts for power dagger on a sergeant is worth just for the sudden strike vs regular marines
i got lucky and killed an enemy champion with a power dagger sergeant in a challenge as he hit me
only 2 wounds on the cheap HQs
and we get 4 attacks on the charge (2 for serg, 1 for ccb and pistol, 1 for charge)
5 pts is worth 0.5 a marine in points and will kill 1 statistically first
cant go wrong unless you're never in CCB
Yes, but that wasn't the point. The point was DLC + Power Dagger.
Ofcourse power dagger is an awesome upgrade for our sarg :p
Oh yeh no point running it with dlc, as you already have a good weapon
Could add it to a sgt with a powersword for the extra attack, no?
