#I need some help making a Dark Angels Army List using just the Age of Darkness Starter Set.

I really need help understanding how to use the battlescribe app to build my army list.

  • I don't know which Contempter Dreadnought to choose between: Cortus Class, Mortis, or Talon. I know exactly what build I want on my Dreadnought but not sure which one of those is the appropriate name based off the starter set. The loadout I want is: Heavy Bolter, Power Fist, and the Missiles on top of him.
  • Are 2 Praetors okay for my HQ choices or should one be called something else? I am planning on playing Dark Angels but I am just sticking to this box set for now and not sure if one of the Praetors looks like it could be any other kind of HQ like a centurion. (I am brand new to horus heresy so a lot of this makes no sense to me yet until I get the rulebook in my hands)
  • I can't find cataphractii terminators on the battlescribe app, are they elites or heavy support? Should I make the cataphractii terminators one big 10 man unit or 2x5 man units? I want 2 terminators with dual lightning claws, 2 with power swords and storm bolters, 2 with chainsword fists and storm bolters, then the rest with storm bolters.
  • I want all my tactical marines to have the basic boltgun so 40 total. Should I make 2 squads of 20 or do I need at least 3 troops choices?
  • Is the Spartan Assault Tank the same size as a Landraider? I would like to make the hull mount a twin linked lascannon but I can't do that for a spartan assault tank and only on a landraider. If not I am fine with it just being a Spartan Assault Tank with the lascannons and no lascannon hull mount.

Battlescribe won't be updated for the new edition. If you want to know how to make a list you kinda have to look through the leaks

Either praetor can be made into a centurion. I suggest doing so with 1 of them - centurion consuls give access to a lot of cool things(like librarians for psychic, or champions for melee power)

The spartan is a similar size to a regular raider. Seems slightly larger but shouldn't be a problem

The terminators are elite. I think they're tartaros though, not cataphracti

And anyone reading this, please feel free to add any suggestions if you think I should or shouldn't buy the special weapons upgrade sprue and add plasma or any other suggestions. I am open to suggestions but at the moment I am thinking of keeping the starter box as is and then adding stuff and making my army more thematic after I have learned more about Horus Heresy and Dark Angels. I don't know anything about this legion but they just look so cool with the knightly aesthetic

It really depends on the list you want to run. If you want to run melee, don't buy special weapons and put bayonets on the dudes instead

I do want to be melee focused. Can every marine have a bayonet?

And for terminators, I did want a little variety so thats why I had some with claws, swords, chainfist and regular fists but what weapon would you say is most thematic, would it just be stormbolters and power swords?

One of the DA wings gives bonuses to units using swords so I would suggest swords with 1 or 2 fists mixed in for vehicle killing

What are rites of war and how many can you have? Any good rites of war for a melee focused dark angels force?

it should be enough to have 2x 10 tacticals or maybe 1x 10 and 1x 15 and then have some special (or if you want heavy) weapons to support the spartan and the tacticals

Not sure how to equip my contemptor. Debating between the bolter, melta or lascannon. Terminators was thinking all fists, 2 heavy flamers, spartan all lascannon, 40 tac marines

So I would recommend 2 lists - one with, one without

Contemptors excel in combat, so I'd recommend a loadout of melta, fist, and inbuilt grav.

Mixed threat response and able to do a lot of damage.

Terminators, 7 fists, 3 chainfists, vexilla. Don't put a chainfist or the vex on the sgt. Don't bother with the heavy flamers if you're going fists - they should be aiming at things that are not going to be harmed by a heavy flamer.

Should I build the tacs with bayonets or should they be staying out of combat and just focusing objectives and shooting

Don't take bayonets unless you're actively trying to get into combat imo

Yes, you still need them
