#Unable to start and launch game. [AVAST Antivirus & EAC]

When I first attempted to launch the game, it said it was unable to find the path to the executable (and it did list the incorrect path to the executable.... the executable was located a few folders up from the targeted location). I tried moving the executable file to the folder it was looking at, but I couldn't move the file.

I decided to uninstall the game and attempt to re-install to see if it would resolve the issue. Now I can't re-install the game because the download fails at 99%, with the reason saying "Disk write error."

Given that I paid money for Early Access, I'm looking to get this resolved within a reasonable amount of time, otherwise I'd like to ask for a refund for a game I paid for but can't play. shruggie

Try giving an install in the default suggested location (C: or external drive where SteamLibrary is a top level folder)

halcyon jetty
tight rock
#

oh i didnt even see the Disk Write Error message

#
  1. is the drive full?
  2. Are you able to copy literally anything in to that folder location?
  3. are you able to install anything else in your steam library to that location or does that also error out
halcyon jetty

#

We're you able to move a file over to the x drive?

#

Literally anything

#

Just to see if it writes

halcyon jetty
#

I should be able to...? Let me test just in case

tight rock
#

And we're you able to start installing a steam game to x? Don't have to let it finish, just see if it starts

halcyon jetty
tight rock
#

Yea just anything

#

See if it's steam just being wierf

halcyon jetty
#

I just created a text file in X: so that worked

#

I'll try installing an uninstalled game from my library

halcyon jetty
#

only having this issue with Legacy

#

If it helps, the download basically gets to the very end (99%) and then it says "Download Failed" and "Disk write error" underneath it

tight rock
#

Clear the steam downloads cache

#

That should resolve it

halcyon jetty

I would not want to put this on the game at this point if steam is failing to even install the damn thing

#

But I could also be missing something at this point

can u add more voice channels to this pls?

Hmmm. Ok, let me ask around

halcyon jetty
vivid zinc
#

try restarting your PC

halcyon jetty
# vivid zinc try restarting your PC

Ok, so this fixed the re-installation failure and I'm not getting the disk write error anymore, but I'm back to the original issue where it's attempting to locate the executable at the wrong location:

vivid zinc
#

huh

#

is your antivirus grabbing it?

halcyon jetty
#

I can see the executable is located here:

halcyon jetty
vivid zinc
#

otherwise validate game files

halcyon jetty
#

I did that last time too, haha. Didn't seem to fix the issue. But I'll try again

vivid zinc
#

well, something is removing the executable

#

there should be an executable in that first screenshot and it's not there, so all signs are pointing toward an antivirus grabbing the executable or something like that deleting it

halcyon jetty
#

hmmm... let me validate game files again

halcyon jetty
#

when I tried validating last time, it said 1 file failed to validate, so then it began updating to try to grab the file

#

and that gives me the disk write error

#

and now I just continually get disk write error because it can't acquire that 1 file

vivid zinc
#

that one file is the executable almost certainly

#

hmm

halcyon jetty
#

yeah

#

I assume

vivid zinc
#

is the folder read-only?

halcyon jetty
#

....it is

#

let me change that if I can

vivid zinc
#

well that will be a write error 😛

halcyon jetty
#

even if I attempt to change it manually

vivid zinc
#

hmm

#

you've got something doing weird stuff with that folder

#

I'm not entirely sure what could be doing it

halcyon jetty
vivid zinc
#

the suggestion to restart your computer was mostly to close out all your programs just in case something was holding a write lock on that folder

#

which i've seen from time to time

halcyon jetty
#

yeah

#

I can see that when I uncheck the box and hit Apply, it doesn't save the state. As soon as I check the properties again, the Read Only box is ticked

halcyon jetty
vivid zinc
#

no, i have no idea what on your PC is doing that

#

given it has a drive letter X... is that a network drive?

halcyon jetty
#

You can assign any letter you want to a drive

#

I just gave it X

vivid zinc
#

ah, okay

#

i know you can set any drive letter... it's recommended network drives are X/Y/Z

#

so that's why I asked

halcyon jetty
#

yeah, not network drives - just another SSD in my case

@shy marsh / @vivid zinc - I was able to resolve this issue! Just FYI: it was related to my Antivirus in some way.

Steps to resolve:

  1. Disable ALL Antivirus Shields (I thought maybe it was just my Ransomware Shield at first, but I couldn't nail it down to which shield was messing it up).
  2. Uninstall Legacy: Steel & Sorcery (if still installed)
  3. Clear Steam Download Cache
  4. Re-Install the game
vivid zinc
#

excellent

#

i figured it was antivirus. stealing executables and locking folders is kind of their thing

halcyon jetty
#

true, lol

halcyon jetty
#

@shy marsh / @vivid zinc - FYSA: It looks like just re-enabling my Antivirus after closing the game one time and re-opening the game removed the executable file again why_god_why

vivid zinc
#

disaster

halcyon jetty
#

So I might have to find some way to make my Antivirus just completely ignore that directory path

vivid zinc
#

which AV?

halcyon jetty
#

or... something

halcyon jetty
vivid zinc
#

ah

#

you should be able to whitelist the executable

halcyon jetty
#

hoping that's the case

vivid zinc
#

we had issues with Avast during playtesting

#

it doesn't like easy anticheat i think

halcyon jetty
#

yeah... my love/hate relationship with it

#

great Antivirus

#

...TOO good

halcyon jetty
#

@vivid zinc / @shy marsh - Okay, I'm happy to say that I think I've narrowed it down.

For Avast to run nicely with Legacy (and EAC), you must specifically disable the Anti-Rootkit Shield and the Anti-Exploit Shield in order for the game to continue to run. These are the ONLY two shields you need to disable - everything else is fine.

#

(if I'm wrong again, I'll update again, lol. But I think this is correct 👍🏻 )

#

(Whitelisting the executable did not solve the problem. The Rootkit and Exploit Shields MUST be disabled)

vivid zinc
#

ok

#

it's probably that rootkit shield doing it, since EAC is a kernel level anticheat

halcyon jetty
#

been playing for a couple hours with no problems since disabling the rootkit shield 👍🏻

Thanks! Finally solution, probles was in AVAST .. I must allow main exe file inside antivirus, now it can be launch! 🙂

That is awesome to hear!
