#AstroConf?

Is AstroConf a thing? Not yet, but maybe one day!
What would you like to see from an official Astro conference?
I'd love such a conf
Would be cool to see some interesting Astro internals by the core team
- Compiler walk through
- Preview walk through (aka how to serve an Astro site)
- Starlight speed run (with pre written content and customization landing page)
- Dev tools walk through (high level what’s going on, how volar comes in)
- Contributing speed run (setting up dev environment creating fixture/tests)
Astroooocoooonfffff
Talk to you all live and meet in person!
let's also talk about astro-font
[Optimized by Astro Font xD]
- Where the JavaScript stops and the Astro begins
- I forgot #2 but it seems like what if anyone could rewrite Astro what would that look like (save the trade secrets, though)
There are some neat ideas here! And maybe... some things that don't necessarily have to wait for an AstroConf...? Keep 'em coming!
I basically have a book about AstroConf in my head 😅 After being so involved with BeJS in both speaking and organizing and even attending. I have a lot of do's and don'ts
Really cool!
I feel like there should be more activity in this thread!!
Here's my contribution: there's an open CFP that I've been crafting a talk for, but I found out they have dealt with other speakers in a sketchy manner, so I'm saving my new talk FOR ASTROCONF, for y'all!
What does CFP mean?
Great callout that we should avoid using abbreviations as not everyone knows what they might mean!
CFP means “Call for Proposals” (or sometimes in more academic contexts “Call for Papers”)
Basically, an open submission process where people can submit their ideas for talks and then conference organisers pick people to invite from the proposals.
Speaking of which (in case I missed it) where are interested parties submitting these CFP's 😃
There’s a thread here where people can post open calls: https://discord.com/channels/830184174198718474/1206667710369366046
(AstroConf — for now! — is hypothetical 😄)
Ah yes, I had spelled it out in another thread here, but forgot not everyone will have read (or memorized!) every thread. Sorry!
now i know you can abbreviate it that way, so i think it works both ways ;P
I kinda want to make it happen! Even if it is fully virtual! @mental harness are you the best person to talk about that privately first?
Why yes, I am! 😉
I am one of those who enjoy Astro in Japan!
Astro Conf, I will do anything to help make it happen!
I will support it!
It's on my task list to make a proposal for what this could look like!
We are plannning a virtual event, and would love to hear people's feedback on:
**QUESTION 1: **What content would be interesting to watch?
- traditional "talks" (about general web dev / Astro-related topics, tools, processes?) planned ahead with slides etc.
- more interactive Q and A style sessions/panels
- "Behind the scenes" stories of/from Astro the project, development, history
- "Get to know" team members
- Cool stuff built USING (not by!) Astro: more showcase kind of content
- "Big name" friends of Astro talking about their use of Astro, or live streaming building things
- 5 - 7 minute "lightning talks" from the community -- anyone (including you!) could submit a talk about anything Astro-related!
**QUESTION 2: **What kind of participation would you want and (BE HONEST) actually do:
- I would participate in a live chat thread while the event is happening
- I would submit questions in advance for panel/Q and A type stuff.
- I would submit questions/comments or even RESPONSES to questions in real time, DURING an event
- I would chat in smaller breakout rooms
- I would "live-tweet" (fediverse, instagram etc.) the event with a hashtag
- If there were the option to turn my webcam on and have my face shown in a big "crowd" of attendees while the event was happening (think big zoom call), I would actually turn my web cam on and "participate" by showing my face
- I would actually attend, mostly paying attention, from start to finish, and not just catch up on the replay/recording later
**QUESTION 3: **Fill in the blank: If Astro conf were going to do ___ I would for sure **cancel any existing plans **and make sure I watch!
Of course, feel free to leave any other comments, but these are what I am most interested in right now!

You already have some of my thoughts ;)
Whoa, Alex SHOWING UP for the questions! 😄
(For everyone else, short answers/comments are fine. I was just trying to get the ball rolling, not make you address each individual thing. But, that's super hepful Alex! Over and above!)
Well I just copy and pasted + adding some emojis 😅 🫣 (not that much work actually)
So clever! I'm glad it turned out to be that easy to do it that way!
Are there "super-interested" emoji for the ideas you ABSOLUTELY LOVE?? 🤔
I don't want to really give them a ranking, but I can give you keywords, which I love more than others:
- panels
- behind the scenes
- live streaming building things
- live chat during event
- breakout rooms
- big zoom call
- interaction & giveaways
(Just realize that even after filtering, it's still a lot 😅)
Ok first of all, I will cancel literally any plans for AstroConf. My wife will be giving birth in a few months... But if AstroConf is go, you better believe I'm there!
So hype for this fr now!
QUESTION 1: What content would be interesting to watch?
All of it! I really want to meet the team, see behind the scenes, and big names friends would be amazing. I would also love to give a lightning talk! I'm well up for that!
I also would like to see projects that shows what's possible with Astro.
We get a lot of questions comparing Astro to other frameworks, or things like "can you add Auth to Astro". So I kinda want to see some big ways people are using it. I know certain people use Astro heavily with htmx and must be making some awesome stuff that really you couldn't, or definitely shouldn't, do with other frameworks.
QUESTION 2: What kind of participation would you want and (BE HONEST) actually do:
All of it but _live_tweet. I'd happily tweet about it several times, but prolly not going to live tweet it as it happens. But the rest though. Very happy to be on cam, happy to ask and answer quetsions.
And you know I LIVE for that live chat thread. That is going to be just incredible. I hope it's like the birthday chat
It's great that I don't have to type all that out. My answers are exactly the same as Alex for questions 1 and 2.
As for question 3 that would actually depend on whether the conf is fully online. If it is, then I'm with Jumper and there is no chance I'm not watching it live. If it I can physically attend IRL, then there is more to consider, but I'll try really hard to be there.
Yes, the plan is for the event itself to be entirely virtual. But, I can't stop people from coordinating little local watch parties.... 😉
We should organize a Astro hosted one.. (or maybe Astrolicious one)
NOTE FOR FUTURE PEOPLE ANSWERING:
It's completely normal that the MOST involved people are answering first, and saying things like, "I will miss the birth of my first child for this." IT IS PERFECTLY OK TO BE LESS ENTHUSIASTIC WHEN GIVING YOUR RESPONSES!
I am honestly looking for QUANTITY of answers so that we can be sure we are catering to as many people as possible. So ESPECIALLY if you're on the fence or kind of "meh"... your answers are really going to help us make something that meets the needs of our entire community! Don't be shy! Please give your half-hearted, lukewarm, "I might come if..." answers too! You matter just as much! 💜
- Behind the scenes, Cool stuff built, Big name, lightning talks (in ~ that order) are the things that would interest me the most. Traditional talks have never engaged me as much, but I am not against having them!
- I would probably actually attend, plus chat in a thread (Or if it's in person, somewhere in europe, and the tickets are cheap, I can prob grab a flight for the day)
Announce the houston plushieProbably tease some big feature/collab to be revealed, similar to studio. (A fully featured CMS comes to mind, but in reality it would be probably something a bit smaller in scope lol)
QUESTION 1: What content would be interesting to watch?
Definitely a keynote on the “State of Astro” i.e. where we’re at and we’re heading, announcing key initiatives for future major releases etc.
Talks focused around recently introduced features. For example, if AstroConf was happening next week, I’d expect to see talks around Astro DB, Astro Studio, Developer Portal to help with adoption.
Community talks from other project maintainers, as well as individual community members. e.g. Adding authentication to Astro using Clerk, improving performance with Astro Font.
Astronaut launchpad: a dedicated slot for developers to announce / introduce new projects of their own. A bit like a Nintendo Direct.
QUESTION 2: What kind of participation would you want and (BE HONEST) actually do:
I’d certainly love to be involved in any capacity, but a good fit would be an extension to my coverage on social media by providing commentary to the community. i.e. live tweeting, participating in live chat
QUESTION 3: If Astro conf were going to announce "One more thing..." I would for sure cancel any existing plans and make sure I watch!
I cannot wait to join AstroConf... online!!

-
I think tradiditional talks and interactive QnAs would be interesting to watch.
-
I might be able to do a short presentation on Astro and micro-frontends on Zoom (though I can't promise anything).
I think for sure I want to open it up to lightning talks at least! We're not limited by time or space, so I'd love people to at least have their 5-7 minutes on stage!
Over the next two weeks, I'll be narrowing down these ideas and come up with a format plan. KEEP YOUR RESPONSES COMING EVERYONE!
NEWS: We don't have an exact day yet (will it only be one day???) but we have a tentative WEEK narrowed down: working dates are the week of September 16 - 20. If this changes, it's likely only to be by a week. Start figuring out where to hold your watch parties....
Going into planning mode 🫣 😅
Watch out, because that’s the same week as both Infobip Shift in Croatia and React Alicante
