for smps I usually recommend using feather, it has a lot of built in mods you can use that are really annoying to find standalone in newer versions and you can add custom mods on top of it

I'd recommend creating a fabric instance of your preferred version and just throwing it into the mod folder after downloading the fabulously optimized modpack
