So today I was trying discharge my 18650 batteries for my goggles for long term storage. I one in my goggles with it on, checking it every 5 minutes for around half an hour. When it said that the battery was at half capacity in the goggles, I held down the power button and turned off my goggles. Low and behold, after switching out the battery for another, whenever I try to turn them on no start-up screen is displayed, and it is just a backlit black screen. None of the buttons work, I can't even power them off. I have to remove the battery to turn them off now. I tried powering it from a 6s and 4s lipo, no dice. USB powering, no dice. Not really sure where to go from here, might contact customer support later today. Is there any way to solve this without replacing a part or returning them?
#Skyzone Cobra X V2 goggles wont turn on properly?

Also I doubt I'll be able to return them but I ordered them from racedayquads in February of 2023 and am just now running into this problem as of 10 minutes ago...
Just really bummed because I blew around 200$ I think I can hardly remember and for them to stop working like this with such light use is well, disheartening to say the least.

Did you keep the battery polarity correct while changing them?
yes
i checked that actually
in the case that i didnt check would that cause irreparable damage? just curious so in the future i can make sure to not do that as well. But i can confirm i did not do that
or maybe i did! now im starting to second guess myself... uh oh
im just not going to rule it out as a possibility but i think i did put the battery in right.
By the way I did contact the RDQ support because thats where i bought the goggles. But i doubt theyll reply till later in the week because it is MLK Day
If they dont respond then Ill contact daniel at skyzone cause thats on this little card that came in the box
I would honestly be surprised if the goggles didn't have some sort of reverse voltage protection
Especially if plugging the batteries in was as easy as it is with 18650
I would try to talk to rdq, see what they think about it
yeah and that backlight is still coming on it just will not do anything with the screen
If you did plug the battery in upside down that's on you I am afraid...
Could have cooked the main chip if the goggles aren't too well designed
Talk to race day quads... But like I would say that you may have plugged the battery in upside down
D:
Cus stuff doesn't usually fail just like that
yeah ill see what i can get from emailing rdq and or skyzone and if i have aynmore questions i post them here
if not then ill makr solved later when goggles are working
i would be surprised if they have it tbh
That's so sad. It's literally such a simple thing to implement
ye but thinking about how reverse polarity has ruined so many radios i wouldnt be surprised if they dont have it
i mean hell the tx16s doesnt have reverse polarity protection either
unless they changed that with the mk II
Bruh
I swear some of the practices companies do rn are so effin shit
Like instead of not including a charger in the box how about y'all make simple safety features
An e fuse would provide all the protection necessary from like 5 diff things
And it's not even 50cents in the individual sale
for goggles i use one of them fatshark cases that has a button to check for voltage, if i reverse the polarity in that the light wont work cuiz that circ would be fried so i have a check before plugging it into the goggles
Eh I just put an xt60 onto everything 🤣
but im kinda nervous everytime i put the cells back into my tx16s even tho im pretty maticulous about it
My E-Bike, my chargers, ma speakers
well yeah fool proof plugs help for things with plugs
I just charge the cells with the radio itself
that circuit died REALLY fast on mine
was a huge flaw on the MK 1
We had a fried controller die cus the customer plugged an xt60 backwards
It's a 13s7p battery
Like 24ish ah
The capacitor's mind was blown
but to answer this for you: yes if you plugged in backwards and they dotn have a reverse polarity protection it will most likely cause irreperable damage
Especially if the main MCU is connected to the batteries without voltage regulation
or the screen drivers
I swear if I get into the EE collage degree
I will force e fuses into every single one of my designs 🤣
If I end up as a mech eng idk welp
i probably should make my liion cells into a 2S pack with an xt30 connector for my radio. i do have a spot welder
but im too lazy
ikr
I sometimes do ~5000 in a single shift
Altho, we do have a fancy pneumatic one with auto voltage and current
You press the pedal and make sure it's hitting the right place
well i do have a foot pedal for mint but it dotn do that auuto voltage adjustment
its the sequre SQ-SW2 mini
in the case that i didnt is there anything i can do or should i just wait for dustomer support
becuase i might not have but theres a chance i did
customer support is your best bet
ok
Ah
Well we have 2 types
We have this
and this (idk why we dont use it often. Its legit 5 times faster than a fast human welder)
they offered to replace it but now i have to find all of the parts that came with it and i have everything but the usb c cable!
searching for it rn
good luck
found one that looks close enough... i hope lol
good news! goggles got replaced and I got the V4's with no additional cost.. wondering if theres a difference between v2 and v4?
just got them today and work just fine. will make sure to always plug in battery correctly... lol
tried to figure it out online couldnt get anything
That is awesome, but I can't tell you the difference either lol
huh
most likely just some hardware improvements idk
nice! just out of curiosity was it through the shop you got them from or directly from skyzone support?
through the shop
either getfpv or rdq i forgot
funnily enough actually when i got the replacement there werent antennas.. good thing i have an upgraded patch and omni for them anyways from truerc or whatever the canadian one is with the x air mk2 or something
its cast to rain for the next few days so no flying yet :(
i see, thanks :)
never heard of discharging an 18650 for storage. I have tons of vapes and flashlights just chilling in random places.. never discharged a single one lol
they're lithium ion batteries just like the ones we use for drones, so for long term storage, it's best to keep them around storage voltage
fully charged or fully discharged are both not good
Yeah, I was js that’s I’ve never experienced an issue with 18650s and I’ve used them for over a decade. Haven’t had to buy any in years. 🤷
Damn 100+ comments
