The founders (Dalsey, Hillblom, and Lynn) noticed that a lot of shipping containers full of goods sent from the USA to hawaii (iirc) by boat would often sit there for ages whilst waiting for customs to clear all the paperwork. So they started sending the customs paperwork in advance by plane; which ofc arrived much faster than the actual goods. This way customs could clear the paperwork (nowadays called T1 papers) in advance BEFORE the containers filled with goods arrived. That way when the good arrived they could immediately be unloaded! This took weeks and sometimes months off of shipping time and also made it quite a lot cheaper since the containers could be used again faster and didn't have to be stored for as long!
