Maybe link to a video on this mate. It's hard to explain the concept with just the syllables grouped

#

Would definitely be interested in seeing different tech styles for sure

Interested to know what this means - I don't understand what the 3s and the 1s and the | mean..

My understanding of trochaic meter is that it's anything made of trochees, which is a stressed syllable followed by unstressed, like DUM da DUM da... Which works great if your syllables have a constant beat division..

My read of your lines is that this is the emphasis, is this right?

I actually kinda wrote a guide into a song like this im yet to release

"Sick of mates that talk up
Emcees that drop knowledge on the 4th and hope the filler makes it all up
Let me demonstrate it for ya
Ya start at A then flip to B to split the C (sea) like the git who made the torah
Hit the cadence, you're done"

Not so much about how to multi but more how to metaphor/wordplay

I think he's trying to do like the rap genius thing, it works alot better visually, lemme pull something up to explain what i mean

ionic gull
#

That's more for rhyme schemes though, right? Not for flow?

stable cloak
#

Probably the best example of deep writing i can think of would be mural

#

Rhyme Scheme and Flow basically go hand in hand

#

A tight scheme will flow together perfect

ionic gull
#

They interplay, but they are separate. You can write tight flow with no rhymes. It's about rhythm. And you can write rhymes without corresponding rhythm. They combine to make good rap.

stable cloak
#

Yeah 100%

The most important part for flow would be getting ya syllable counts locked in
One syllable too many or too little can really throw a whole flow off

Yeah that looks nice in an excel spreadsheet i like that

I think a better way to describe it is that the main emphasised syllables need to land on the beat (on the 1, 2, 3, or 4). And that you DON'T de-emphasise syllables that SHOULD be emphasised.

Then how many syllables you fit in between depends on the tempo, and the how easy the syllables are to say with each other. At an 80-85 BPM you can probably fit 3 in between (one per 16th note, 4 total per beat), like most beats in that 3lysian/RollingTones battle. But sometimes you want to make one syllable longer, so skip the 16th straight after (the yellow cells in that analysis). And other times you want to just run 8ths, for emphasis, or triplets, to fuck with the groove, or maybe double up one 16th for two 32nds, if they are easy to fit in.

And THEN the main thing about flow (as Seth mentioned on a recent stream), is just making sure that you keep the rhythm consistent (or at least related) across bars.

IDK there's no real hard rules to flow apart from "dont have a bad flow" ahaha

Immortal Tech, Blueface, etc are some examples of people without typical flows that have made it work for em
Then there's all the chopper rappers

#

Thats a good breakdown of how to do a standard rap flow though, The old Big L/Lloyd Banks style is my favourite fallback anyways

ionic gull
#

I only know a little Immortal Technique, and I don't know the others, but I'd bet hat 90% of their key syllables land on beat, and other times they would usually land on the half beat

#

I mean, not accounting for lagging

stable cloak
#

Yeah IDK ya getting too music theory for me when ya breaking it down like that, Im just a wee lil rapper, it came natural to me and i ran with it ahaha

One way that I use to check flow feels good, is to count the beats, and then figure out which syllables land on those beats, and then JUST say those syllables, without the syllables in between (so just 4 syllables per bar). It helps you lock in the main rhythm, and also helps you think about which syllables you want to emphasise

I fucken love that poem. Lots of Poe's stuff is good, if you don't mind the depressing moood

lean pebble
#

There is a lot more going on technically, but a good way to "feel" the meter

ionic gull
#

I didn't mean to actually rap that beat-syllable method. It's just a tool to make sure you're understanding your own flow.

Yeah, the trick with meters in poetry and rap is you ideally want to match the natural emphasis of the word with the meter. e.g. the normal stress pattern of "Amazon" is STRONG-weak-weak - AM a zon. If your meter is using a different stress pattern, the word will sound weird. But also, some words can have multiple "natural" stress patterns, depending on the context they are being used in. The main thing is to say it out loud and see if it sounds weird - over emphasising the stress pattern will make in more obivous to the ear.

AAALSO, in rap, you usually want the stressed syllables to fall on the beat, or on a kick or snare, so that the vocal stress pattern plays WITH the drums. Sometimes this isn't the case (e.g. you can play against the drum in a call and response, but this is hard to do well), but what ever you do, it should be intentional.

Yeah, I think the main thing is really just paying attention, and this gives you a good tool to do that better.
