Recommended
CPU: last gen i7
RAM: at least 16gb
DISK: at least 1tb SSD

Minimum
CPU: i5 last gen
RAM: 8gb
DISK: 500gb SSD

It's important to get one with a good battery.

I would say minimum i5, 12GB RAM and 250GB SDD

#

8 GB will be slow if you just browse Firefox on Win10

These minimums are like 1k$ laptops lol

#

Monthly salary where im from is 200$, cant exactly afford those type of specs

#

my budget is 5-600ish

#

& how do i tell if a battery is good or not

#

on a laptop

then you have to use Linux 🤣

Yep

or Windows 7, but nobody supports Win7 anymore

arctic quartz
#

Chromebooks are good cheap options but they are generally not even close of those specs

red magnet
#

or you buy a 8GB RAM laptop and suffer like my mom did

#

She complains about the speed of her HP 8GB RAM win10

#

and all she does is Word and Sudoku and Firefox

arctic quartz
#

Yea forget it, win10 with 8gb ram won't cut it

red magnet
#

but yes, RAM price is expansive for NO reasons

arctic quartz
#

If you want win10 you need 12gb or more

red magnet
#

try to get 12 GB even if you pay a bit more

#

it's better to get 16GB and have it for like 5+ years

#

CPU speed or GPU speed is not really important except for extreme gaming

#

any 64-bit CPU over 2 GHz will do

#

make sure that you like the keyboard, if you are not docking with USB

#

and enough USB ports for keyboard, mice, usb stick or USB headphones

#

and HDMI, Ethernet

arctic quartz
#

I would still recommend to have at least an i5 but this is more flexible than Ram

red magnet
#

some cheap laptop brands provide like almost no USB, wifi only and no hdmi, and I am like WTF

arctic quartz
#

Yea, it's the new trend

red magnet
#

even DVD+RW are out

#

I have seen like 2 USB ports

#

imagine, keyboard+mouse ... where do I put my usb key 🤣

#

I have seen one with 1 USB port for mouse...

#

it's like you need to carry a USB hub 🤦‍♂️

#

for 8h or 16h straight?

#

you don't want any battery stuff

#

even wireless mouse / keyboard outside a boardroom / living room is stupid

arctic quartz
#

Mmh that what I use hahaha

#

I have a MX key and MX Master. They are both Bluetooth. However, I use the wireless usb connector

#

I don't have any issue with battery life

#

I do

#

used you can find 16GB ram

780$

#

that's a decent one and pretty cheap for 780$

Atleast i5, 8gb , 1tb+ SSD

#

Gaming laptop kills battery in daily use

#

But if you have the optimised settings and graphics

#

It would be fast and support the work. I had to buy two laptops in 2 years. Because I don't have a nice graphic card or SSD. And the programs that you're going to install and work on a project will be high in size and it takes more ram.

#

For computer science majors definitely need a great graphics card 1080+.. if u have low ram like 8gb
