#Better light system

Currently the light system in the game is not the greatest at night especially with things like the beam of light for where you're pointing being extremely hard on the edges instead of fading out as light would normally do

This is then coupled by things like this in the image attached where you have a shadow at the bottom of the tree even though theres no light source above it and a very strong light source to the side

Improvements

  • Dynamic shadow system
  • God rays
  • Shadows on all objects instead of only trees
  • Fading out the light for the laser

I wouldnt call this a major thing to fix since content comes first but figured would note it down

bro.

the shadow during night is bc the moon also shines light upon us

#

its not a bug its a feature

signal socket
#

messing around with smoothing out the flashlight, I think it looks pretty good

#

I could definitely do shadows with godot's lighting system, however that means I'd have to go through and add a light occluder to every building. Not to mention how this would affect a lot of stuff like lights and performance

#

But I might mess around with that one day and see how it goes

woah

I don't know how this would impact performance. Any phone can run 2d lighting today

#

You can affort 1x 2d light

thin cape
#

okay, so you shipped one mod cool. And yet yuo still have such an ass take?

#

its not about 1 light

#

its about waaay more shadows that this light will produce

static tendon
#

So? You can do it

#

Don't say it's too expensive until you tried it

thin cape
#

you are oversimplifying the whole sitution. adding dynamic lighting and shadows in Godot isnt just about dropping in a 2D light

#

you need to integrate that light properly

#

include all interactions with buildings

#

objects

#

moving buildings/objects

#

even if many phones can run basic 2D lighting the performance can vary drastically based on how complex the game world is

static tendon
#

This world isn't complex. You can add a light

thin cape
#

also You're selling this game for 10€, people expect 10€ worth of game you know that he is a solo dev? price doesnt automatically translate to unlimited resources or time

I'm mostly solo dev too, that really doesn't matter. You can add a light to this game

thin cape
#

yeah, sure thing

#

lets just drag and drop a light

#

done

#

anyway, this conversation isnt going anywhere

#

im going back to work

yeah we could do it like this, but stargound isnt just updownleftright

#

its updownleftright at an angle

Id disagree with that, starground has a bunch of things and chip has already done a bunch to optimize the game for lower end devices. Also, I dont think realistic lighting will fit that well with the feel of the game. People have already complained that the night is pretty dark, now with shadows and all that then it becomes a light up the place simulator.
