#Help Reordering Episodes in a TV Show

So my issue is with the TV show American Dad. The files I have follow Wikipedia ordering which is not the same as any of the options available for ordering on Plex. And due to how I got the show (the practice I don't think we're allowed to talk about here) I am unable to just move the two episodes to the season they belong in. Anyways, I have the Plex ordering set to the one that has the least out of order and It's left me with two episodes that are in the wrong place. The ordering on Plex says there should be 20 episodes in season 16 and 24 episodes in season 17, while the file/Wikipedia order have 22 episodes in both season 16 and 17. Presently in Plex it is showing 22 episodes in both seasons but due to the ordering issue it is showing episodes 21 and 22 in season 16 as just "Episode 21" and "Episode 22" respectively with no information. The titles of those episodes in the files are "Downtown" and "Cheek to Cheek A Stripper's Story" respectively. Both episodes, according to Plex ordering should be season 17 episodes 2 and 3 respectively. Presently in Plex it does show episodes 2 and 3 in season 17 as those titles but according to the files those are not the videos those titles match, if that makes sense. The files have episodes 2 and 3 as "A Star Boy is Born" and "Tapped Out" respectively, which does not match the titles in Plex.

At this point my question is basically what should I be trying to manipulate with Kometa, and how do I make it happen. I obviously have the wiki for a little help on the structuring but as this isn't a specific example given in the wiki (maybe something to put on the to-do list, I doubt I'm the only one that's had this issue) I'm not sure what exactly I need to do.

Am I trying to manipulate the ordering of Plex to reflect the files or am I trying to manipulate the ordering of the episodes to reflect the source Plex decides where to order from.

Apologies if this is confusing, thanks in advance for any assistance!

However you got the files you should be able to rename or move them however you want, unless you're seeding the copy that's in your media library which seems odd.

#

If you have to move them from season to season you probably can't do that with Kometa.

#

Since Plex is going to see them in whatever season folder the files are in

Yes I am seeding the copy thats in my media library, 20Tb drives are expensive and I don't have enough storage for two copies of everything. I was just hoping I could change the metadata of the episodes in a way to force them to show up in the places they should be

Now that I look through there though I'm not seeing a way to change episode numbers

Hmm symlinks, I will look into this right now, thank you for the info, this might fix a lot of issues I have had with other shows as well. It is a pain not being able to edit the hard copy for seeding purposes

Yes

Not good enough with the terminal environment so I generally need some kind of tutorial for learning new things like this

Given:

/seeding/files/here/Movie.Name.2020.ENGLISH.720p.WEBRip.800MB.x264-GalaxyRG[TGx]/Movie.Name.2020.ENGLISH.720p.WEBRip.800MB.x264-GalaxyRG.mp4

you could create:

/plex/looks/here/Movies/Movie Name (2020) [imdb-12345}/Movie Name (2020) [WEB-720p]-GalaxyRG.mp4

As a symlink or hardlink and only have one copy of the file on disk.

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it very much. Upon thinking a little harder I think I might have wasted your time getting me a tutorial for linux as the media files are all on a Windows PC shared to a the Plex server (Ubuntu server) via smb/cifs. I would imagine the process on Windows is much more straight forward, I am finding a lot more help online for Windows than I was for Linux

#

My next question is will the links I create on my Windows file system be recognized on the server side

#

Update: Worked like a charm. Thank you very much, you've saved me a hell of a lot of trouble telling me about links, they will be used often!

# prisma radish chatgpt can be useful too .... and its free

Thats fair enough. Honestly I am not very experienced with the capabilities of AI. I suppose it is one change in the world I have been a little reluctant to accept and thus haven't used it more than one time, though I probably should try it more

ask it a question like in a search engine and have a conversation with it about the answer
can be quite "enlightening"
