Is there a way to use and implement custom separators? For example, Dad's Collection (separator) followed by his favorite collections, Mom's Collection, Daughter's collection, etc.
If so, how would I go about setting that up?

The separators are just empty collections; you can create and name them whatever. There isn't a settings-driven "make me a separator named BingBangBoing", however.
Set the sort title to make them show up in the desired place.
