#Plex Library Scans take longer after PMM creates Collections

I realize this is very likely not a PMM issue, but since it was caused by PMM, I thought I would post here to see if anyone else has experienced this.

Previously, Plex library scans would proceed very quickly, and if nothing new had been added, each library scan would only take a few short seconds. However after creating various collections through PMM (all using the PMM Defaults), suddenly Plex library scans would take considerably longer.

I noticed if I am watching the Plex UI when a scan happens, normally the progress wheel would go in a clockwise rotation, and immediately would disappear after it finishes the cycle. However after I created the PMM Collections, suddenly this process takes a lot longer. The progress wheel still travels clockwise, however once it reaches the 12 o'clock position, it sits there for a good 3-5 minutes before disappearing.

I don't know if this is due to some sort of scan that is happening due to the collections, but I never noticed this before with default Plex collections. It only started happening after building the collections with PMM.

Also, I have tried completely deleting the PMM collections and testing again, and the problem went away. I also set up a completely new test server, imported everything from scratch, and tried again, and the problem once again appeared only after creating the PMM collections.

Has anyone else experienced this, or know a solution to fix it?

also do you use alot of smart collections?

I do. I'm using all the Streaming Collections, Network Collections, Genre Collections, Studio Collection, and Decade Collections. And there are 2 movie libraries and 2 TV libraries (one each for 4K). So that's quite a lot. But the strange thing is, I don't remember it being an issue before, I just started noticing it more recently. Possibly something changed in the way Plex has handled smart collections?

One thing I can try is to delete all the PMM collections, then start adding them back in one section at a time, to see when the issue returns...

I don't see that it's something we would be able to do anything about really?

Yeah I figured, I was just hoping maybe someone else had seen anything similar.

@acoustic heron do you use a lot of smart collections? I know a lot of the problems I experience stem from the fact that I have a library that's probably bigger than it has any reason to be. So with a huge library, and using smart collections, it seems that maybe this is causing undue stress on the database every time something new is added. But from our conversations in the past, I gathered that you also have a very large library (probably bigger than mine). So I was wondering if you had experienced anything similar to this...

I haven't so far as I know, but I don't do a lot of full library scans, just autoscan for new items. I have just rebuilt libraries, though, so will do some tests to see if I notice anything.

I use autoscan as well, and this actually happens even when a single item is added via autoscan. It will quickly scan the item, but then it stalls at the end of the scan. Sometimes for several minutes.

#

I have been doing extensive testing on this, I've even set up 2 identical PMS instances running in docker on the same machine. Identical in every way except for the fact that one of them has a lot of smart collections added through PMM, the other does not. And this issue only occurs on the instance with the smart collections.

#

I fully realize this is a Plex issue and not PMM, I was just trying to gather data before approaching Plex about it.

Huh, interesting.

It's probably exacerbated by the size of the library. I've also noticed that the more smart collections I add, the worse the problem gets

#

If I had to guess, I would say Plex is checking each smart collection whenever something new is added, to see if that item should be added to the smart collection.

#

On smaller libraries this probably happens almost instantly.

I think Plex have played the "Plex isn't designed for insanely massive libraries" card before

Yep

I guess typically I haven't used a lot of smart collections, since I figure the UI can filter those things already.

So maybe smart collections just aren't for me. A shame, I liked having them available.
