That's honestly one of the reasons why I also switched from AMD and my old 6900XT to NVIDIA: ray tracing performance and AI capabilities. You can use AMD for upscaling with NCNN and so on, but pure AI and generation tasks are harder. I think there are some solutions, but they are rare.

Yeah, the ray tracing they showed at Citizencon 2023 will transform gaming in a way most people don’t really realize until they see it. I see a great indifference and rejection of ray tracing, with claims like “it doesn’t make much difference” or “it costs too much performance for nothing,” which is wrong and shows most haven’t seen a truly well path-traced game. Cyberpunk, for example, is a completely different game with it. You have to see it to believe it.

Just look at all the accurate shadows that are completely missing in the original picture.. The realistic light and where it goes.

I totally get that! ^^ I had teh same experience with my AMD card but I love raytracing and good lighting too much so I switched. ^^ Outlaws was also amazing with RTX Direct light which is basically pathtraced lightign only.

Its pretty easy. You just gotta know and learn what model is best for waht.

RealSR... Model is the best for pictures that have already a high quality and are clean, so no noise or artefacts.

BSRGAN is a model that does already a good amount of noise reduction. but looses details.

realERSGAN I mostly use for realy bad qualiyt pics or as a smoothing filter after I upscaled a picture with realSR..

@small geode I tested which AI Model would work best. Ultrasharp did as it seems. Shows you that each model performs differently on every picture. When there is not so much contrast and many details that may look like noise to the AI, I use Ultrasharp which is an trained AI Model from a Discordmember from another AI Game Upscale Discordserver. And it really is the best model I have seen so far for high resolution realistic pictures, since thats its purpose.

Made 50/50 view of RealSR, Ultrasharp and BSRGAN. Last picture is the raw Ultrasharp result without comparison implemented. And I did nothing to contrast or anything to not change the character of the picture which I find very good.

😄 You can tweak it and get a progressbar. If you go to the settings and debug there you can enable the command windows that closes when done. It has a progressbar. 😉

What you wanna use: BSRGAN works on most SC game images. Since it has a strong noisefilter in it, it works pretty well. realESRGAN has that as well, but looses details. realSR... is for already high quality pictures with almost no noise. It has also a noisefilter but not nearly as strong as BSRGAN. But keeps a lot more details.

And other models you can download and test.

If you use like 95% which is default, you will be amazed how strong that compression is and how good it still looks compared to JPEG. But Discord will show the thumbnail lossy. If you dont want that, then keep using PNG. 🙂

The differences you see.. Thats why I always process even my own pictures which I take in 5K and as a PNG. By that I remove any noise from the pictures and you really see the difference. I hate noise in pictures. ^^ It makes such a difference. 🙂

I use a Reshade that puts noise over the image, among other effects. I decided recently that I like that effect a lot. On screenshots it might sometimes be too noticeable but while playing it looks more 'organic' to me.

I still think CA has no business in games or pictures as an artistic effect.. You can do other things. But filmgrain I can understand to a degree.

I always figured CA and Film Grain were leftover from lower resolution days, adding those effects and other layering effects added a perceived depth and more texture rich experience, I don’t see the point with adding fake old timey camera effects to games these days, especially a space game set in the future haha!

hehe.. Yeah he is right. If people would actually use PNG and disable crap like filmgrain and chromatic aberration, the results would not be so impressive anymore because there is no need for it. Fr my own pictures I basically use it just for removing noise. BSRGAN is pretty good in that which I used in your pictures above.

The great advantage of cupscale is you can just download teh model you want and put it into the model folder and use it.

As pointd out in the video, models vary extremly on what they are trained for.

You should just never use JPEG as format. Use PNG which tool ever that provides. I use MSI Afterburner since years since it runs anyway always.

Well it is upscaled. 🙂 It depends what model you use.

You doknt have to use 100% either. You can set on the right that you want 50% resize after upscaling, then you get 4K from 1 080p picture. I tend to do that. 8K just explodes in filesize ^^

If you want max quality, I recommend to disable Chromatic aberration and film grain. also sharpness maybe lower, but thats personal preference. I have sharpness turned down.

Now I have a 4K Monitor and its eye opening. ^^

As long as you don't go nuts with effects the performance hit is negligible--easily less than 10% even with a few effects.

That is to say, equipment dependent.

Its a mighty ship which is nerfed into the ground. SC is fucked in terms of balance since 3.14. I dont play it anymore. I wait till they sort out their balance stuff..

Models I would recommend:
Jaywreck, removes JPEG artefacts,

Denoiser thats very powerfull and sometimes useful.

My new favorite model for decent noisee reduction, jpeg artefact removement and max details. Its trained on anime but works with SC screenshots often also very very well.

Very good with removing JPEG artefacts but not so much with noise in general. Still testing.

A model thats specialised for realistic photos and very good with jpeg artefacts. Sometimes useful.

Most the time I use ultrayandere when I dont have too much noise because it doesnt mess with blur in pictures like Realesrgan and bsrgan do.

BSRGAN and realESRGAN have the best noise reduction btu they sometiomes also swallow some details.

I really like the colder color with this picture. Most pictures and planets like hurston and Orison are always so overly warm. I mean I really like warmer color temperatures but they are not always fitting.

@tall mountain I used your picture as a test for removing as much as possible of the clutter we normaly have on screen. I would love to be able to set up my own HUD to my liking and remove all the fucking clutter we always have.. I photoshopped it in this case ^^ 😉
