Well the custom engine with SS14 opens up a lot more imo, so that's great. I don't know much about either of the Unitystation or SS14 dev teams enough to know if they'll be lazy with or do some groundbreaking tech contributions to the codebase like CIG are doing. So the fact that SS14 are going their own way is a good sign

@charred current just want to chip in real quick on this comment. I have played a LOT of Elite over the years, much of it PvP. The flight model is complete and utter trash. There are a very small number of "valid" ships to fly because the hard speed-limits (which are very low) are hit on every hull ALL the time, so you have to fly something in PvP that has a certain set of characteristics.

In PvE, your flight literally just doesn't matter. It's just a numbers game about shields and DPS, and the NPCs (even "Elite" ones) are just moronic, and have no concept of "evasive" flight. They just kinda joust you and let you shoot them while they shoot back.

SC's AI still has a long way to go, but they already fly more intimidatingly than all but the tiniest Elite: Dangerous ships (and those tiny ones can be killed in seconds, and/or just ignored and killed using auto-aim and auto-fire turrets, if we're being honest about how mediocre the PvE combat is once you're "engineered" moderately well).

I say all of this as someone who desperately wants to see E:D succeed. I LOVED playing Elite for years trying to grind up to a reasonably engineered level in every ship, and doing Power Play (another system they've ignored since inception) with one of the larger groups. Frontier has done a piss-poor job of balancing and developing their game.

E:D ships are required to do most turns using roll and pitch. Yaw is BARELY effectively so you can aim at all.

They tuned every ship so your ability to turn horizontally just blows.

I want to be clear again before anyone blows a gasket: I really enjoy Elite as a game to progress in and built your way up toward having the "meta" gear and a big ship or two for kicks. It's well-built to be what it currently is (you are your ship, you go places, you do very formulaic grinds to make money, etc).

It's just not a game you should EVER look to for balance (at any point in progression, including end-game), end-game content, ways to run an economy, or a flight model worth emulating. It falls on its face very, very quickly.

Odyssey is... a weird concept. They've already basically stated that getting on-foot is literally just you click a button, and the next second you're being lowered out of an elevator just like you currently are with your rover.

They may even teleport you to a room in a station. Not clear yet.

All this said, I strongly suspect that E:D will remain an active game community for two reasons:

1. Their instancing is P2P, so keeping the game running costs Frontier next to nothing in hardware compared to SC and other (*more heavily) server-based games.
2. They allow "solo" and "private group" modes, where players can never, ever encounter PvP. This means that true PvE-only players (usually the ones referred to in Elite as the "forum dads") will stay on E:D or other single-player experiences. SC and other freer multiplayer universes have no appeal to them.

Yeah, and Elite recently changed their business model slightly from direct cosmetic purchases, to special-currency purchases so that you can't just buy a ship skin. You have to buy a $10 pack of "Arx" or whatever. You can earn a little bit of it in-game, but the goal is to make you spend JUST a little bit more than you would on currency instead of a skin.

If you are voting against someone, that's a very simple, very valid inverse: you don't believe they'll improve your life, or society as a whole, and thus you don't want them in power.

I think what we saw this election in the US is that voting matters quite a bit. Many seats were flipped by less than 1,000 votes. Some states by very few. There was record turnout, but "record" still didn't crack 60% in some places.

It depends on how you define "better" of course.

There are entrenched interests who may see "better" in different ways than others, but you'll note that not every decision always benefits them. Particularly when voter turnout is high, and those opinions are unpopular.
