I love seeing all the people asking why Helldivers needs an anti cheat not taking the 5 seconds to utilize any critical thinking and realizing that if cheaters rapidly cleared all the invasions on all the planets the game would be literally unplayable

#

It’s really remarkable, the mind of a twitter user

last moss
#

Looks like a twitter rant to me

ebon stag
#

I saw one person use lethal company as a point of comparison as to why Helldivers 2 doesn’t need an anti cheat

#

I was just baffled

scarlet swan
#

there is the point that every mission actually affects the game on the global scope

#

cheaters bashing out a mission every 30 seconds would not be good

#

and that just shows how pointless all these "normal" anti-cheats are

ebon stag
#

1 cheater could do what would take a coordinated team of 4 ~30 minutes in 3, that would ruin the game

#

On a global scope even

#

Like you literally would not be able to play it shortly after any cheats got distributed, because there would be no missions left

scarlet swan
#

does nprotect launch with your pc, like vanguard?

#

or is it more like EAC?

ebon stag
#

I’ve heard it doesn’t, just launches with the game

#

That’s likely why you see that little white box appear in the top left corner as well as the nprotect logo

scarlet swan
#

but nobody gives a shit about EAC and Battleye being kernel level

ebon stag
#

Because they can’t make people mad enough with them anymore, but nprotect is less common and Helldivers is new, so it’s great for driving engagement

well, as you know, publicity is publicity, good or bad

The most random rant you'll see for a minute:
Absolutely despise the fact that every corporate entity feels the need to rewrite their own history to match current... guidelines... where is even one "Coca Cola Girl" poster in this presentation? I wasn't aware until now, but are they ashamed of that history? It's ridiculous.

umbral helm
#

ohhh ahhhh the guy from the year where literally everyone was a piece of shit in some way was a piece of shit ohhhhhh nooooo

#

instead of owning that in history and saying “look at how X group worked against the grain and now our history is better bc of it” corporations erase that

fast pike
proud atlas
umbral helm
#

in 20 years the MLB will be saying Jackie Robinson was well supported by all his teammates and coaches and that the commissioner fired all the racists

#

Bc no one will know better

#

instead of saying “hey we were kinda pieces of shit back then but look at the changes that have been made and the work done by these individuals to make us as an organization a better group.”

fast pike
#

looking at some historical records about things people are discriminated against today still it warms my heart a bit to see that it's been socially accepted at some point and that there are records of such things/practices throughout history

#

for example, did you know that Schrödinger (the guy that apparently hates cats) was polyamourous?

proud atlas
fast pike
proud atlas
umbral helm
#

polyamorous yes, with young women

umbral helm
#

Article’s Source: schrodinger’s own diary

proud atlas
#

I don't usually judge people by their ominous gaze, unattractive features and hairline- but look at the man

umbral helm
#

I’m surprised Schrödingers cat hasn’t been renamed yet bc of this ( not that I think that it should )

fast pike
umbral helm
#

If we were to go thru the history of people considered genius I don’t think we’d like a lot of them lmao

proud atlas
fast pike
#

fine, I'll take a different example. The author of Frankenstein (Frankenstein's monster?)

umbral helm
#

Einstein was an incest freak who had infidelity problems and treated both his first wife and second wife (his first cousin) terribly

#

Hard to be a great person in every area

#

It’s like character creation

#

90% of points assigned to X thing and the remainder gets spread out over the other necessary skills

proud atlas
#

Dumped all points into intelligence?
You get the following negative traits:

  • Zero Charisma
  • Pedophilia
umbral helm
#

When you influence society and the entire human species so greatly, there’s probably some private life stuff that’s terrible. Not every time

#

I’d say most of the time tho

fast pike
umbral helm
#

But a lot of this stuff is boiled down into articles

#

There’s probably nuance

fast pike
proud atlas
fast pike
umbral helm
#

Most men did not treat their wives great

#

And marrying a first cousin isn’t as much of a shock as it is today for that era

#

Doesn’t make it ok

#

But it’s not like it was an out of character evil act to commit with everyone in society telling you to do otherwise

fast pike
#

right.

#

speaking from my personal moral standpoint, I'm generally of a fairly liberal stance of "as long as all people consent" which (in case of incest) would take potential offspring with faulty genes into account - AFAIK there's no negative implication for genes if first cousins sometimes produce offspring ¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

that being said, that sentence itself already borders the "we need to keep our genes pure and healthy" mindset... which produced a couple massacres over the years

proud atlas
#

yeah it's the offspring part that matters, that's the responsibility that needs to be taken into account. Otherwise it's just current societal nroms

fast pike
#

I'd rather we have some sort of parenting license and neuter everyone who has proven to be unable to care (emotionally) for children

proud atlas
#

Not the last part

#

The first

#

- Conservative Libertarian

fast pike
#

parenting license is extreme?

#

or neutering everyone?

#

backslash in front

#

a traumatized and badly-cared for child is going to affect all other children in their vincinity

proud atlas
#

Agreed

fast pike
#

imho a traumatized child is going to cause way more long term damage than other good reasons we have licenses for

#

or to put it in the clear: if you're traumatizing a child, you're effectively torturing a child

#

and in most places on this world, we have laws against that

#

granted, holding a specific way of parenting over people is also going to impose some ideology

#

can't prevent that

proud atlas
#

I'm gonna derail this into something else because I'm selfish and low and hate the government, but how the fuck do we live in a world where travel by car is necessary for survival in most situations, and they are gonna force us to license and pay tax and test for and the worst part, forced insurance

#

Forced insurance is literal fuckin robbery and cash washing

fast pike
#

because you're operating a machinery that is capable of hurting not only you but a lot of other people if not operated correctly. And history has proven that there are enough people not operating correctly that insurance is preferred over victims suffering preventable damage

#

and travel by car is not necessary in most places, that's why humanity has invented good infrastructure and supply lines

#

now, I agree with you on the insurance part

#

because if you're negligent enough to damage someone else's property or body, you should carry the responsibility for it

proud atlas
#

humanity has invented good infrastructure and supply lines

They have? Even the free public buses in my area don't run on certain days, or at times people need for work. If we had autonomous rail it would be different I suppose, or hell, autonomous buses (still scary IMO although the tech is getting there)

fast pike
#

but fact of the matter is that most people wouldn't have the money to pay such damages outright, thus not having insurance would mostly harm the victim, not the perpetrator

proud atlas
#

If you fuck up pay the consequences

#

It's all I'm asking

fast pike
proud atlas
#

Pay the damages, pay the fines, do the time. Can't? Then get fucked. But Insurance is a fucking scam.

fast pike
proud atlas
#

It's a tough situation then I suppose

#

(As in I hold my opinion, but get where you're coming from)

fast pike
#

in the end, if the perpetrator can't pay, the victim suffers for it

#

well, as for insurance being a scam: there are insurances that are exploitative

umbral helm
#

car insurancd is one of the less scammy insurances but all insurance is a grift

fast pike
#

but if insurances were a scam, large cooperations managing or owning a large amount of assets wouldn't use them, but they do.

umbral helm
#

I worked on software that managed health insurance and workman’s comp etc for unions

fast pike
#

insurance is meant to protect against unforseeable losses

#

or at least mitigate them

umbral helm
#

The amount of bulk and overhead costs in insurance is why it’s so expensive

#

You aren’t paying into the pool to help cover the expenses of other members

#

You’re covering the massive costs of software, offices, employment etc for the insurance company

#

As well as profits

#

Which is why I consider it a scam

fast pike
#

and, of course, if it's privately owned or publicly traded, it's also a business wanting to make profits

#

in Germany, for example (and in other european countries), there's mandatory health insurance

cursive hazel
hot cradle
proud atlas
fast pike
#

and the general health insurance is funded by the government

fast pike
#

however, even if owend by a government, there can and will be some mismanagement

fast pike
#

and what is covered by the insurance is ultimately decided by the representatives or the government

proud atlas
#

Insurance for profit should not be an utter-able sentence

fast pike
#

in case of the German general health insurance (GKV - Gesetzliche KrankenVersicherung), the federal government pays billions to cover expenditures that couldn't be covered by the funding mechanism for the health insurance

#

however, and this is where the German model fails utterly

#

we also have private health insurers

#

and generally speaking you're only eligible to join a PKV (Private KrankenVersicherung) if you're a top earner or

#

public servant, I guess

#

well, a sworn public servant

#

top earners can opt to self-insure and leave the GKV, and there's a limit on how much money you owe to the GKV

#

if you surpass that limit by earning more, you can leave

proud atlas
#

Love that, "public servant"...
When was the last time someone was dubbed a public servant, and said person acted faithfully with that title in mind? Certainly not here in North America

fast pike
#

and sworn public servants are covered by the government directly - it pays ~80% of all health-related costs

#

and the remaining 20% have to be paid by themselves - but they can insure privately and PKVs in Germany have special terms for them

#

the other bad side of the coin is that there are some nonsensical things that are funded by GKV and that over the years it funds less

#

and, if you're sceptical of immigration (and immigration in Germany is managed badly compared to some of our neighbors), all immigrants and asylum seekers are automatically insured in GKV and get social benefits

#

whether or not they're contributing to the German economy

#

and because the system has quite a bit of holes, it's also known to be abused and abusable

#

anyways, my point towards insurance is:

you want insurance if:

  • you have assets you want to protect but not the money to cover for damages,
  • you have assets and theoretically the money but large sums of money can be put to work in a more meaningful way
#

i.e. an accident only happens every 10 years and costs a large sum of money. If you were to invest that money, you wouldn't have it available in case of an accident but after 10 years you'd have more than covered for the expenses of the insurance due to the monetary gains through investments

The newish ones nowadays are fine, they're what I give out to employees

Old X1 carbons used to have wi-fi chip issues, and some thinkpads/yogas have charging issues but haven't seen that in a while

Get a Lenovo E-line Laptop.

they're fairly affordable and you can order parts from 10 years ago if you really need to

umbral helm
#

Windows laptops suck mostly

#

Lenovo has good lines

fast pike
#

put Linux on it, try GNOME and KDE as desktop environments. I'd suggest Mageia or KDE Neon.

umbral helm
#

all windows laptop makers have good lines and then the rest are utter shit

fast pike
#

if you're not in the Apple ecosystem, getting an Apple device is usually not a good idea

Mac won't delete your files but Mac is also very expensive

umbral helm
#

so are good windows laptops

rose ferry
fast pike
#

and if something breaks, you'll pay a shitton for repairs

rose ferry
#

That's the thing, it almost never breaks

fast pike
#

if they even repair it, in most cases you have to buy a new device because Apple

umbral helm

rose ferry

And a parent won't have to worry as hard about getting viruses on a mac

fast pike
compact granite
umbral helm
#

I’ve had 2 MacBooks repaired and one replaced over 15 years of owning Macs lol

#

I never paid anything beyond AppleCare

rose ferry
#

Accidental damage doesn't have anything to do with whether it's good or not. If your Windows laptop breaks, you still have to pay to repair it

fast pike
#

first off, if you're not doing questionable shit, you're very unlikely to get random malware in the first place - no matter the OS.

rose ferry
fast pike
#

and windows defender is actually usable since windows 10

exotic reef
# fast pike that's a myth.

The myth is that they're magically immune, it's not a myth that most viruses target the OS with the largest install base

rose ferry

When they had the Windows PC I built them that shit got pup viruses constantly

compact granite
#

TBH everytime i get a Windows laptop it blue screens within a year or so.. I have a 10+ Macbook that is still working fine

umbral helm
#

the idea that you need to be doing sketchy shit to get viruses shows a lack of knowledge on the area

rose ferry
#

Keraldi, it's a case of you being too deep into Linux/Windows that you're having a tough time seeing that Mac = almost always the best option for simple stuff or for parents that are tech illiterate

#

It's bias at this point

compact granite
fast pike
umbral helm
#

Macs are far simpler for maintenance, file organization / searching / indexing and application install

rose ferry
fast pike
#

in any case, if you're clicking on a fishy e-mail attachment or porn ads, you're fucked with every OS

fast pike
#

if the projected lifetime of your Apple device ends, especially for mobile devices, you're shit out of luck

umbral helm

Confirmation bias!!!

fast pike

if Microsoft decides to do stupid shit, you're shit out of luck, too

compact granite
fierce wadi

Chromebooks are so underpowered for how much you might end up paying for one. If you're just doing very basic browser stuff then yeah even the cheaper chromebooks perform really well

#

But for anything more than that, or if you actually gain an interest in tech.. you need to jump through hoops to get them unlocked.

#

I know chromebooks inside and out, and honestly (it's 100% a lot better now) they're held together with scotch tape and wood glue

Not even just hardware, even the internals of the OS are stupid

umbral helm

this is a pc for a parent who is seemingly not looking for a powerhouse

coarse onyx
#

windows is worse than macos

fast pike
#

windows is bloated with adware and advertisements from the get-go

#

#

and since LibreOffice added the options to use registers like Microsoft office I just outright prefer it

fierce wadi
#

I just don't like apple

coarse onyx
fast pike
#

previously I preferred LibreOffice mostly because it doesn't have some stupid limitations that MS Office has

coarse onyx
#

ms office is a literal shit show

#

but also: just use google workspace

fierce wadi
#

They make fine products but they gouge their customers for every penny

fast pike
#

like the arbitrary 255 character limit for Excel headers and footers kekw

coarse onyx
fierce wadi
#

Never ever has it decided to crash because an update killed it early

fast pike
#

well, I do heavily prefer open source software and dislike potential future employers collecting user data about me, so I generally try to avoid Google as much as possible

fierce wadi
#

I just try to make my own version of things I use often that aren't already open source

fast pike
#

anyways, that's my reasoning why Linux with a previously good hardware Windows laptop:

  • Windows is utter garbage, no questions asked
  • MacOS is fine but Apple hardware is not sustainable or repairable long term and (at least for older devices) Updates made them nigh unusable. There's enough documentation about that, so I'm not going to elaborate further.

The Linux desktop experience has improved A LOT over the past years and if you're just clicking icons anyways and are not used to one OS or another, there's no downside compared to Windows or MacOS.
If you got a ThinkPad, replacement parts are a breeze if something ever breaks and you'll not have to worry about the PC not being powerful enough to work with new updates probably until you die

#

and while I do enjoy being marked and bashed as a Linux fanboi, I have to disappoint: I use Windows as my daily driver and Linux only for studying and student administration responsibilities. My work laptop (until today) was a Macbook, by the way. So I basically used all three sides of the coin on a daily basis

#

While University has a complete Microsoft ecosystem and work a complete Apple ecosystem

#

and over the years of making laptop recommendations for students, I've got less support requests from people using Macbooks and Linux laptops than from Windows users

#

while for Apple users there were always issues making it work with the university stuff or because they don't have an iPhone but an Android smartphone

#

Also, the university outright denies support for Apple devices in some cases
