It’s one thing to just say the ship goes at FTL speed, it’s another to conceive of a way of getting there.

My idea is that perhaps the ship has some sort of engine or computer system that is capable of creating a worm whole that bends space time. Like folding a map and walking across. And the magnetic fields help create that bubble around the ship and when it gets close to the destination it helps stop the ship and maybe even guide it to the desired Star System. Of course with this method of two star systems were close enough it would also be possible the ship would enter the wrong star system.
But I’m interested in knowing if anyone else has other ideas.

• Ancient alien space gates which create wormholes

• Exotic matter which somehow changes the condition of the test by altering part of the FTL problem, like Mass Effect's Element Zero

• Shipboard wormhole generators

• Dimensional tunnelling i.e hyperspace achieved either by space gates or shipboard drives

There's probably some more exotic ideas for interstellar travel but those are the broad categories of mechanisms I've seen before
