So this is kind of a dumb question, but what do people mean by "good" artifacts? Is it just a 4/5 star thing, or is there something about what happens as the artifact levels up?

2 levels of looking at this:

1) The main and sub stats on the artifact.

The key is to get those "categories" that you want. So it is dependent on your char, but generally CR and CD are preferred (not for all cases, but most cases). That is because upgrades will have a change to boost one of the substats. In other words, if you have great substats, then you run a lower risk of boosting a substat that is useless to you, which leads to my next point.

2) Substat rolls.

When you upgrade the artifact, you get a chance to boost one of the substats on it. The whole point is to roll as much as you can into the substat that you want. However, that's a 1 in 4 chance for a 5* artifact. Therefore #1 is crucial to reduce such instances. At least if it's a sub-par substat, it is better than something that is entirely useless to your char. The more you roll into the substat you want, the better the artifact is.

It depends on how perfect you want to be.

The average (at least from what i see) is if you have an artifact with 2 useless substats (#1), or that if you roll 2-3 times into a substat that you don't need (#2), then you should consider stopping and moving on to another rather than overinvesting.

There is no "right" time to stop, but it depends on how much you want to invest to "gamble" on the RNG.

Yeah +80 is more for eking out the last bit of performance from a character, really better to spend your resin on artis and such to get better rolls since the RNG is just shit, once you got a decent set of arties for your primaries then you can bump them up to 90.

I mean it isn't worthless, it's just most characters perform just fine at 80, you can still pop their last ascension for a decent boost before making the slog to 90

I have 11 characters at 90 😛 it's a massive investment for that boost. lol

I have Noelle and Sucrose at 90 for 4 stars, Diona will inevitably make the trip but is at 82, and possibly Yanfei. Though I think I'm going to work on popping more ascensions before I bother with anyone else getting to 90 at this point.
