Ekranoplans, right? fun little (ok maybe some not little shock) guys, everyone loves them! they're so cool and based, but in-game they.... uhh well saying the "suck" is an understatement, i am here to change that, by providing a comprehensive revamp of the entire ekranoplan/gev system, which will include a complete rework of the flight, along with a new tutorial/training for the class, which due to how they work, should be a separate one from other classes.

EKRANOPLAN FLIGHT REWORK

GEVs, as the name suggests, have flight be possible through the ground effect, this makes it so that their flying behavior is significantly different than regular aircraft, being that they will fly in an almost completely straight position, using their gigantic horizontal stabilizers to yaw left and right so perform turns, this alone is already challenging to do, but the main reason i think they need a rework is simply for the actual effect itself, i truly believe that it's somewhat flawed as just setting the aircraft's altitude to be very low just makes the experience of flying them... boring, hard and underwhealming, a rework of this to better suit the ground effect feel would make GEV flying so much better and actually very fun!

EKRANOPLAN LICENSE AND TRAINING

GEVs having very different behavior from regular aircraft would require some sort of introduction to their controls, a training for this, much like other classes would be a great addition to the game and make it so that you can easily learn, and master the GEV flight, much like helicopters!!!

The A-90 should be used for this, the training will be given at Leovetsk, or alternatively Northachiev Experimental works, and have you fly around the entire russian island and return back to the docks at the same airport, this will not only teach you how to control their take off and landing mechanics, but as well as the flighr controls, managing your speed, and helping you understand the turning of the aircraft

EKRANOPLAN CLASS

The ekranoplan class, as suggested before, will be a separate class, they will be available after Jet Engines, requiring 25 hours o~f logged time in them, this will ensure that no "noobs" immediarely buy them and gets worked up at how hard it is to fly and wastes their cash and time.

Obviously, the ekranoplan update needs to have ekranoplans!! By the way if you haven't noticed, i switch between GEV (Ground Effext Vehicle) and Ekranoplan (Ekranoplane), those 2 are the same and can be interchanged at will great. The game currently only has 2, with one or 2 others in the works, i was told that suggesting more vehicles specifically would count as bundling sggestions, which is mid, so i will maybe suggest them at other times, but i really hope that more are added, maybe all together in one huge update, maybe over-time

GEV JOB REWORK
Currently, GEVs get jobs exactly like seaplanes, which... have a few issues of their own, and carry them to GEVs, some of the airports in the game are completely unreachable, either being in the middle of bumfuck nowhere avalon, having no ports or being like 2 feet above sea level Holditin, a rework for this would be very much needed if more ekranoplans are added into the game, a good way for this would be to simply copy over the code from boat jobs to ekranoplans, so you don't accidentaly take a job to horata or smth, along with that, a buff to them would be essential, currently the KM has 80 capacity, but it gets jobs that are completely worthless, even with special multipliers.

Another issue with ekranoplans rn is that they can't make much use of the service ceiling fuel efficiency

Perfectly holding altitude with either ekranoplan is virtually impossible, you will always slowly lose a little bit of altitude before regaining it

#

In practice, ekranoplans will fluctuate between flying at 60% and 80% max altitude with decent micromanagement, and this quirk doesn't mix well with the already pretty low max range of them

#

Ekranoplans just don't offer much right now, other than being awesome looking creatures and i'm all for buffs and/or reworks of them

I think what he was saying is that most of the turning authority is coming from the rudder, they obviously bank to help, but it is not like most aircraft where they are exceeding 10-15 degrees of bank on a regular.

for a start, they fly exactly like an aircraft that had a low service ceiling, which is not how they work in real life, i want to suggest 2 changes to this, which will also suit perfectly with the fact that some GEVs have regular wings which allow them to fly outside of it

the Ground Effect Zone

The ground effect. as the name suggests, only happens near the ground (or water), so i think making a specific ground effect zone which will happen near the ground, a handful of meters only above it at max, this zone will act like a very efficient flight corridor, you will be able to gain speed much much faster, slow down much faster, as well as increasing the aircraft's fuel efficiency by a LOT, and you will be permanently locked to this area in GEVs that are only made for flying in that area, and you will have an option to toggle the aircraft's mode if you have a hybrid GEV, much like how a VTOL aircraft works

this may seem unbalanced, as it just makes you really really efficient while flying near the water, as a balance change for this, i was thinking of a major nerf to the durability/condition of the aircraft while using it, it'll basically work like an overspeed corridor, where you gain a massive increase in efficiency at the cost of not being able to fly for that long, as in real life, ekranoplans suffer a lot from seawater damage

Turning GEVs is... hell, it sucks in game and in real life, i suggest that, as a way to make the turning better, along with fitting with the ground effect, the aircraft while under the inflience of the ground effect, would only be able to turn using A or D for rudder, or with mouse controls in a leveled path

it will lean into the turn softly, however there will be no effect in it's actual roll input, as the ekranoplans during the ground effect will be locked in rotation

for the first 100 knots, once they leave the water, they are slow and bulky

but once they leave the water and gain altitude

that's when the fun begins

for the stalling part, a good way to change this is to make them behave somewhat like airships and helicopters, they can't stall, if you go above their max altitude they just gently fall back down to their max altitide, something similar to this could be implemented where if a GEV during the ground effect corridor accidentally leaves it, it will gently fall back a meter or so, instead of stalling, immediatelly losing 100 knots, pitching down and slamming itself into the ocean

i know that this will require a lot of resources, as well as time and coding expetience, and that is why i'm not asking for a simple revamp of the existing aircraft on a small patch, instead an entire update dedicated to GEVs, as a completely separate vehicle class and concept as a whole, much like the ships, an amazing way to split this update would be the following:

GEV pt1:

  • updates flight and GE corridor
  • new vehicles, ones designed to fly in the GE corridor ONLY
  • revamped jobs

GEV pt2:

  • New hybrid GEVs
  • required patches if GEVs are broken
  • job options designed for hybrid vehicles

Tom’s totally legitimate GEV would be something like 2 seaplanes strapped together at the wings but with underpowered engines so it would be incapable of leaving ground effect.

I think GEVs should require some skill to fly, but i do agree that when you leave ground effect, it should be more of a gentle descent back down, unless if you like pitch way up then it would just stall and fall back in the water. I definitely like where your head is at, because GEVs are NOT an airplane and really a class of their own, so making them function like that and be more useful would probably see them actually get used beyond just being a novelty item.

Ok, so, seeing as this suggestion has gone a bit too long and complicated, split into several messages and a few conversations, i'm going to re-write the main few concepts i want changed/added into a single comprehensive message, easy to read, simple to understand, i'm only posting this message here while i go write the main one so i can remember to do it great

i want to change 3 parts of the current ekranoplan system, the flight, the classification, and how they work

Flight: Implementation of a ground-effect corridor, raised a few feet off sea level, the aircraft will become significantly more efficient and have higher acceleration when in it, however maintenance will deteriorate faster, purely GEVs will be locked to this corridor, hybrid GEVs can fly outside for reduced stats, if a pure GEV leaves the corridor they will simply fall down slowly, like an airship which goes over it's service ceiling. rather than stalling and dying

Turning: They should turn like boats when inside the corridor, only using A and D to make the turns, and they will roll softly into the turns, much like a motorcycle (since that's what they do irl :3)

Classification: They'll have their own class, separate from other aircraft, it'll be available after jet engines and require a certain (relatively high) amount of time to acquire, the training will have you spawn at Northachiev Exp., fly around the almost all of Tsel, and end flight in Leovetsk, it'll teach you to fly on the ground effect corridor and it's benefits, sadly there will not be any ekranopoints Skrolled

Jobs: Current jobs are lacking, i don't exactly have ideas for new jobs, however i do wish that the script used for job picking was different from regular aircraft, as currently they can grab jobs to unreachable locations such as airports in mountains or small hills Holditin
