ATC In this game is already pretty solid, but it has the potential to bring the atmosphere to a new level if some of these changes were adapted to the game.

Notes before you continue:
1.I am not a coder, but I understand that a lot of these changes may require fundamental reworks of various systems within the game. With that in mind I am not necessarily sure what is feasible and what isn’t. Feel free to call me a dunce based off that.
2.I am not an aviation or ATC expert; my knowledge of ATC operations extends up to minor VATSIM experience and self-study. If there are any mistakes or misconceptions, please feel free to let me know so I can address them!
3.On the feasibility aspect, I will attempt to order the rework ideas from most to least feasible, as well as address the benefits and drawbacks of each point made. That way, even if some ideas are deemed unfeasible, others may be implemented or adjusted to better fit the scope of the game.

Recommended changes
1.Free cam/ spectator cam for Air traffic controllers
a.Air traffic controllers can use the WASD EQ or arrow keys as well as the right mouse button to freely move and look around the airport. Limits can be put in place so that the player’s camera can only move 2.5-5nm along the X, Y, and Z axis within the confines of the airport, or from the tower.
b.By double clicking on aircraft, the players cameras will move and lock to an orbital view of the selected aircraft. This allows players to have a closer look at aircraft within their airspace. This option would only become available once the diamond appears around a player approaching or departing an airport. If a player uses the WASD EQ or Arrow keys during this time, the camera will be moved to the closest position to the airport from the aircraft in free look mode (fig. 1)
c.Players can use the 1, 2, and 3 keys to alternate between the orbital tower camera, free cam, and orbital aircraft camera (if an aircraft is selected) respectively.
I believe that this is a substantial quality of life change. In its current state, the air traffic control camera feels very restrictive. Adding additional camera angles gives players more freedom to maneuver and look at things differently, it can also fix the issue of names overlapping if aircraft are too close together. It also gives players the ability to take nice screenshots :3
Some basic complications I see are troubles with programing a free camera into the game, since there is currently no free cam/spectate feature (as far as I know). To alleviate this, some preset views could be implemented instead. For example, at the end of runways, around taxiways, and airport terminals, still giving players some flexibility in their choice of perspective.

2.Move and resize radar screen for ATC
A big issue with ATC is the absolute size of the radar screen. When open, it takes up quite literally the player’s entire view of the airport. A simple change in terms of how the radar screen operates is therefore in order.
a.Move the radar – Pretty self-explanatory, allow players to move the radar screen around their screen
b.Resize – Also pretty self-explanatory, allow players to change the size of the radar screen as to not take up the entire view
c.(Optional) Minimize radar – If resizing the radar proves too difficult, allow the player to maximize or minimize the radar screen. In the maximized state, radar screen will be as big as it is currently, in its minimized state, the radar screen will act as ND/HSI and would be set to a preset position between the chat and player leaderboard. In this minimized state, There would obviously be far less information available to the player, but critical information such as the airport, aircraft icons, and rudimentary callsigns should still be present.

3.Aircraft automatic commands
Much like how Air Traffic Control gets its own selection of preset commands for aircraft within its airspace, aircraft should get the same menu for requesting permissions from ATC.
When an aircraft is calling to ATC, their message will appear orange to the ATC, and only the ATC. When getting a response, the ATC’s message will also appear as orange to the relevant aircraft, while it will appear as blue (the current standard) to everyone else in the server.
Requests may vary from pushback, taxi, runways to land on, as well as automatic readback of an ATC command. The button to open commands should be somewhere near ND/HIS and ADI UI elements.

#

4.Multiplayer ATC roles (Ground Movement Control, Air Control, Top level control)
One of the biggest troubles with ATC is the sheer volume of aircraft making requests at one time (KCIA immediately comes to mind). It quickly becomes a challenge to quickly and effectively clear all pushback, taxi, departure, and inbound requests. This point attempts to address this issue.
a.Ground Movement Controller
Self-explanatory, handles all ground-based operations up to the runway.
b.Air Control
Responsible for all active runways as well as the inbound and outbound aircraft utilizing them. Roles can further be broken down to Departure and Arrival.
c.Top Level Control/ Area Control Center
Responsible for controlling aircraft within a given Flight Information Region (FIR) at high altitudes, as well as control over smaller regional airports.
•Implementation
ATC players will have the ability to cooperate with one another to handle and pass control of aircraft between one another. Ground Movement Controllers will have access to all commands in blue, plus an additional command: Handoff Control (to Tower). Along the same vein, Air Control will have access to all yellow and red commands with the additional command of Handoff Control (to ground or ACC/TLC. TLC Have authority over all highflying aircraft, as well as some smaller regional airports.

This change in my opinion could be one of the biggest and most promising changes to the game as whole, as it could potentially change the way players view ATC from just a minigame to a bit more of a real job and provide a level of “groundedness” to the game. However, a change like this has to take a lot into consideration.

The biggest issue with a change like this is the player limitations. In its current state, Aeronautica servers only have the capacity to host 40 players at a time. If all Towers, or even just the high-volume towers such as Al Tak, Clarence, Anhedral, Norman, and Sandris were all staffed fully with ATC, that would mean that anywhere between a quarter to a half of players would have to be controllers at one time. Leaving very little room for actual core gameplay of aviation to take place. There are a few ways to rectify this issue
A.Apply this change to a select few airports
Applying this change to only a few airports such as Clarence, Anhedral, and Sandris for example would work as both a pilot program and would also resolve the issue
b.Increase the maximum capacity of servers by 10
This is a less likely scenario, as it would likely impact the stability of servers as well as disproportionately affect lower end systems and cellphones running the game. But it would work to alleviate some of the issues presented above, especially if paired in tandem with resolution 1
c.Introduce ATC only servers
This is the least likely out of the 3 possible options, open a 40-person responsible strictly for air traffic control. Commands would be sent out to all aviation servers helping further coordinate aircraft. This introduces more issues with stability, net code, and internal coding that I probably wouldn’t even be capable of understanding, but I figured It may be a possibility considering that cross server aircraft are present in the game (albeit a bit buggy).

#

5.Ground service vehicles
Allow players to operate ground-based vehicles such as catering, fuel, and stair trucks.
I put this last as out of all the options, this is the least likely, and really doesn’t even apply to ATC, but rather airport operations, still having vehicles rolling around refueling, restocking, and servicing player aircraft would be a nice addition and would further enhance realism in the game.
a.If ground vehicles like the catering truck or stair truck are unfeasible, a fuel truck should at least be put up for consideration. We already have airborne tankers, so ground-based tankers wouldn’t change the gameplay or dynamics of the game too much and would pair well for people attempting to job chain or those who just barely made it to the airport and need to refuel before reaching the terminal.

After carefully reading this suggestion I must say that I overall agree with it and it's really nicely written and structured with a lot of ideas and workarounds although some things suggested can be achieved by joining AeroATC

I feel like this response is somewhat rude

#

If you actually read allat, you'd know he isn't just suggesting a realistic atc community.

#

OP did the following things

  • Created a well made, thorough document on what he'd like implemented.
  • Even provided visual, labelled information in the form of photos.
  • Organized the suggestion, even providing a file and even attempted to format it neatly in discord.

Only to be hit with a "L too long cba to read it all". I may not be an aero developer or anyone of high standing in this community, but it's a little disheartening for his suggestion to be dismissed so carelessly.

#

I love aeroatc

#

but there are things that need to be added and changed with it, which this suggestion well, suggests.

#

implementing them wouldn't just help aeroatc but atc in public servers.

#

given aeroatc isn't active 24/7

#

I do apologise in advance for reviving this thread though if that's an issue.

Yeah man there are points that the OP said that can't be alleviated by just joining the ATC Server.

#

I do agree with all the points that OP has said for the suggestion.

In game ATC needs some QOL upgrades and some love

#

It’s been their same for years because it’s works

#

It at the same time there are certain things that could be improved

modest elbow
#

I mean if you compiled a list of “Old functions that need some love.” You’d have a list like this:

#

Airlines, ATC, various old as hell aircraft models, engine failures, maintenance, economy and balance, stalling and service ceilings…

#

Though I’m not gonna say “Devs lazy” because they are certainly working their asses off on new features.
However I think there might be some mixed up priorities among the dev team.

#

Especially because there are a handful of suggestions from years ago that randomly disappeared into the development pit (AI despawning when you enter their gate, for example). It feels like Valve when they had their policy of “everyone gets to work on whatever they want, and if you don’t like what your working on, you can just move to a different project.” Which is great for morale, but not so great if you want a polished project in a reasonable timeframe
