I want/need a way to control my RTX 3060's fan speed in linux
I have found a program called GreenWithEnvy (GWE) that promises to do it
but I can't get it to work
sadE
I'm pretty sure it doesn't work on x11 either
but I should probably test it again
regardless, I want it to work on Wayland
so I can adjust my scroll speed like a normal human being
my fans make an awful noise when they start spinning
so I keep them at 40% with Afterburner to avoid that lol
but I can't do that on linux using any methods I've found
I have coolbits set
doesnt the nvidia settings use x
does nvidia-settings -a "[gpu:0]/GPUFanControlState=1" -a "[fan:0]/GPUTargetFanSpeed=<SPEED>" work?

from arch docs
never actually done that
also
shouldnt you just like
try to fix them
instead of forcing your card to overheat
they aren't broken
also the whole thing with Afterburner is it just allows me to specify a custom curve
so the minimum becomes 40
ok my exernal harddrive install is a good idea guy
and the rest is just a linear ramp
it wasn't installed.
it was hooked up via usb3
oh you mean the OS
nah bruh it was a GREAT idea
and it worked as good as it could, on that HDD
Interestingly, if I flip the whole computer upside down, the fans don't make that noise
yeah then theres like fucking dirt in there or something
nah it did this when they were brand new
it's not such an "awful noise" as I said
yeah mf
but it's a very audible "click" sound
it probably got syrophome in it

i found a script that just runs that command above
but on a cron task
gets utalization and manually sets speed
clever
gpu will self-throttle if that happens
but it's not like I'm gaming on linux
the sound is only an issue because of the constant starting and stopping of the fans
nah that would make it worse
WD40 will ruin the lubricant that's already in there
and it's probably not even a lubricant issue
just the magnets pulling on the fan, pulling them upwards a bit and when it falls back down it clicks
inside the fan hub?
I've never been able to pull a fan apart without breaking it
wd40
no
interestingly, only fan 1 makes the noise when starting
fan 0 is fine
I will just set the fans to not spin at all
I don't need a gpu for linux
just a display output
I need to get an AMD card for hackintosh and linux usage
then just plug into your motherboard
and blacklist nvida
or just blacklist nvidia
and use xf86-video
no gpu functions so no gpu fan
I highly doubt that
literally just a graphic output no hardware accell
now, I do want hardware acceleration
I just don't need to play games
I could do with a much less powerful gpu
you probably dont even use hardware accell most of the time
my earlier statement about not needing a GPU was very misleading
and just think you are
probably true
its a huge pita to setup hardware acell on linux
properly
and have everything use it right
well I'll just roll with 0 fan speed for now
AINTNOWAY
passive cooling
a 3090
also
I retract my statement about hardware accel
if your using wayland
then you really have to be using hardware buffers
thats like
the whole point of wayland
is hardware buffers and blits instead of copies for window graphics
💀 i have a 650
You did remind me to disable hardware accel in chrome though
i wasnt lying when I said my shit was like a decade old
and it has improved the experience on wayland a lot
mid range hardware from a decade ago
still runs perfectly fast for literally anything I need it to do tho
so i cant justify upgrading because theres literally no reason to
my gtx 760 would be fine too if the fan didn't rattle
and if it wasn't too slow for my blender needs
linux more like linux!!!
Pag
makes """"joke""""
refuses to elaborate further
leaves thread

could have used this
@rich ocean i cant type my password on arch
you're using arch again?

i didnt say that
also i cant mash del or f11 to get to bios
NVM
IM A FUCKIGN RETARD
i was using the wrong dongle
(i needed to get to bios to install windows)
L
OK SO
You might know I have a old pc
has a i-5 and a 1070
If I use linus will my wifi, fps and just everything improve
and can I still do things that I might be able to do on windows
and I want to keep all my pictures but not my files
is there a way to transfer this
Like what games
And yes
Partition your disk in a way so you can access your windows partition and just drag and drop
When you done justice delete that windows and just merge it
Or just upload to Google drive or something
Well right now I’m into driving games because I got a wheel
And some small indie games
and maybe diablo
Ok what guide should I be looking at
Uhhhhhhh
First
How much you have on disk
And do you have multimedia drives possibly
Thats what it's looking like
Not by very much
Learning Linux is quite an undertaking
Not as bad as learning vim
I think it’s fun but it’s not for everyone
BRO
STFU
