Recoil in firearms (especially handguns) is a "3 stage system". The 1st stage is just the bullet itself coming out of the gun, this will generate about 1/4 of felt recoil. The 2nd stage is when the slide/ bolt carrier reaches the end of its travel. That is a large burst of felt recoil that is significantly stronger on handguns. On rifles it depends. If the gun has a lockup system like an ak or an AR, it will be about the same or a bit stronger. On "pistol caliber carbines" the 2nd stage will be significantly stronger due to the use of a different gas system. The 3rd stage is when the bolt or slide goes back forward chambering the next round and pushes the gun forward a tiny bit. Bolt/lever/pump actions only have 1 stage of recoil due to the lack of a reciprocating mass. A good place to look for slow motion videos of guns being shot is ballistic high speed. If you have any in depth questions feel free to dm as well.

Other gun suggestions: if the player is using a handgun with 1 hand and the grip button isn't over 50% the gun will stovepipe and jam.
Squibs: a 1 in 1m chance the gun will have a squib load that if not cleared with a blank or shoved out of the barrel will make the gun go boom

I'm saying they did it wrong

Their math is wrong. When you shoot a gun, the bolt moves forward and back and that movement is like half of the felt recoil. This isn't represented in the current system.
