Starting!

#

Chp 1- ||Poor protag is a doormat, but dang if his superhero obsession isn’t an unusually normal hobby for a goosebumps protag.

Jack, you can do better than Mia.||

#

Chp 2- ||Oh that fall’s gonna hurt||

Chp 3- ||Yeah Jack. Wilson needs you to go to Mia’s party so he can show you up and ruin your life forever||

Chp 4- ||”it’s dangerous, especially when we have mudslides.” I can hear someone chambering a cartridge in Chekov’s gun.

I want a Wilson POV because some of his oneupmanship feels intentional and some doesn’t.

I question the legitimacy of those tickets, but Jack’s crashout is understandable. I would’ve left after the pants-split tho.||

Chp 5 or 6- ||I actually kinda like this ‘intro to the supernatural is a book you find in a chest in a basement’||

Chp 7- ||Why not tell Mia “actually I was thinking just you and I could go rollerblading. Y’know, without Wilson”??||

Chp 9- ||Bro needs to come up with better lies to get out of being social. ||

Up to 14- ||I bet the Magic powder contains a hallucinogen.
Also, methinks dad’s “big one” is gonna be his son’s levitating dog. Gonna have to have him on a leash at all times now.||

Chp 15- ||Maybe you shouldn’t tell Mia until you’ve read the entire book. Just to be safe.

Does Wilson know you’re competing against him?||

Chp 16- ||Oh it’s not gonna work with an audience||

Chp 17– ||MOM TO THE RESCUE. And if she does that often enough that people know she does that, I’ll retract my “get better lies”.||

18- ||WHY NOT USE THE RAIN TO FIGURE OUT WHY YOU COULDNT FLY EARLIER||

20- ||Didnt Wilson take the book and Drug Powder? He’d have to at least taken some of it to make the monster blood dough, so he might have some at his house if he had returned the book and envelope afterward.||

Finished!

||This one was… enjoyable? Surprisingly? I noticed a few plot holes (what was the REAL cause for falling-not-flying out the window? Why did he never ask his parents where the mattress went? Why are his parents the actual worst? How did the family that had lived in the abandoned house get a hold of the book and powder?) but for the sake of that ending I’m willing to overlook them.
Someone described goosebumps protags as “punching bags for antagonists” and that’s a decent description of Jack. He and Wilson have a mutual competition that’s not unbelievable for a couple of 12 year olds, but it did get annoying to read. I think pretending to lose the ability to fly was absolutely the right choice for a number of reasons, but he also could’ve pretended not to be able to fly when Wilson strong-armed him into a race thus entirely avoiding the public spectacle of his own flying ability.||

Chapter 12 is disgusting 😑

#

I read this when I was a kid but turns out I forgot everything except the ending
Which makes sense because the story itself is mostly nonsense ||(if there is a printed book with a recipe for flying, how could that stay a secret etc)||
But the ending was surprisingly smart

in the mood for a Goosebumps books, so why not read this! the title sounds intesting

#

Chapter 1
||huh I did not expect to see a romance storyline in a Goosebumps book. well, almost, it is age appropriate. Calling each other cute and that feels like a huge thing, and trying to impress the other person and all. Just feels surprising because I dont think any of the other Goosebumps books I read so far had this?

I like his Superheroes hobby though! And man if Mia is that impressed by Wilson (who clearly is not the best guy) then she might not be a good match for Jack ||

Chapter 7
||this rat event sounds like true Horror. Being in a dark abandoned moldy basement and then rats jump at you... ew ew ewwww

I also get Jacks frustration, Wilson seems to be the perfect being, except that he tries to make a competition out of everything. And wins.

and I like how in the Goosebumps books, we sometimes hear super hilarious things from the parents' jobs. LIke here, with the woman who tried to play music by banging her head against something. ||

Chapter 9

this made me laugh out loud, this is so funny ||

Chapter 25
||this escalated quickly

and Jacks parents are the worst, wtf
makes me think of Influencer parents / family blogger style people||

finished!
||this felt not as obviously creepy as idk, ghosts or zombies. Instead we get the horrors of being famous. And see what happens if someone makes a competition out of everything. I really liked the ending and it felt like there was character development in Jack. Before, he always joined Wilsons competitions, he tried to rescue that cat, he flew with Wilson at school, stuff like this. But in the end, he learned his lesson and now has the life he wants.
This was very entertaining! I dont mind the plot holes. And I hope that Jack will have a better found family at some point in his life, wtf is wrong with these parents||
