Ch 4 ||so the comet is finally hitting, lowkey this is bothering me a bit that they had literally six months to build the ships and somehow they are massive af with parks and all that gorgeous stuff and they can last centuries in space?? hmmmmmmmm idk abt that. also if they had so much fricking space why wouldnt u try and get more pple on. and the fact that when anke showed them there she was like “you can take any of these cabins” which means there are spare cabins??? but for some reason they cant take a shower they can only wash their hands and only drink their own water. but they have enough water for a brook and stuff idk this is actually annoying me a lil. also the mom is so annoying and irresponsible?? why were they not taking the threat of a literal comet coming along seriously! and when are we gonna find out what happened to iris||

ch 8 || damn that was intense, i understand the fear that shes gonna get kicked out of the ship and die but like that was literally so pointless. would not help her case at all. lets see where this goes. im glad i got an explanation for why theres so many empty cabins and space and stuff and that theres a waitlist. i still think the mom is irresponsible. ||

like they are not bad they’re just more logical and objective and tend to choose the easy way out for the best

i think denise being autistic made for a really interesting pov but also i think it was kinda a cop out

cos you could argue the reason why such and such was ignored or overlooked was because she was hyper focused on this and that but then you could also argue it’s shit writing

its unique and honestly it was actually really heavy for me becos she has meltdowns and theres situations where pple are veryyyy disrespectful of her and inconsiderate to the point of abuse imo so i felt it very badly which ig is something to keep in mind when reading

The ship sounds interesting. It must have been built long before the announcement of the comet to be that big and complete. Confused as to why there are spare cabins, but I guess it's some elitist skill kinda VIP only ship... meaning there must be a lot more to the teacher and her wife methinks ||

The good
|| this started off really strong. The anxiety and desire to read on to find out what’s happening was SO GOOD and having an autistic MC was a really interesting POV and I could relate a lot (except when it dragged).
The mum character was unique in that you kinda hate her, but you see that she’s flawed and she’s so much more than just “an addict”.||

The bad (imo - no hate )
|| this book was far too long than it needed to be. It really really drags in the middle section and it becomes an endless loop of the same plot of Leaving the ship to search for person. Coming back. Leaving ship again to repeat. Stress about the mum being an addict. Getting kicked off the ship. Being allowed back on the ship but shock horror! Now x person isn’t allowed on the ship and whatever will we do, what a dilemma! Bruh this was good the first time but this happens like 4 times???????
I also did not like how nothing bad really happens past miriam dying. It’s like it’s some happy world almost. Not post apocalyptic. I get the cultural differences but even the captain has a revival arc at the end. I know this is YA but this felt middle school almost. Maybe I just prefer darker reads but this is one of my fave settings in books and games and this book just slaughtered it.
Also the MCs portrayal of autism was good at first, but it felt a bit too overdone (coming from an autistic person myself). I admire the authors mission (reading the authors note) but it got annoying to me. Even tho I saw myself in many of their traits. I think it was because the book dragged on forever the repetition in everything was ||

When he’s not shown to have any authority whatsoever. Not via respect or scare tactics or anything. I just do not believe the masses would just accept it.

ALSO his whole shtick is he wants a generational ship but seems to do 0 planning for upkeep of genetic diversity, scanning, equal planning for genders lol. That’s like #1 for these kind of ships. I know maybe not a comfy topic but everyone should need to be scanned to make sure they’re fertile as well or the whole ship / humanity is doomed?? ||

Up to chapter 16 ||I like this ok, but I’m not getting a strong sense of where the story is going, which I would kind of have expected at this point in the story, a quarter of the way through. It’s just the girl and her extremely frustrating mother hanging around the ship, but then they also want to go look for the sister? Like it’s not bad it’s just kind of aimless ||

Up to Ch 30 ||Ok, it’s picking up a bit for me now that she has a place on the ship and a job. Her mom should just cool it, she’s not gonna get a spot on the ship and she should just be happy for her daughter. And Iris finally wandered back into the plot!||

Up to ch 48 ||sigh this is all so noble but highly unrealistic. I get Europeans are nicer than Americans, but the fact that no one is turning against others yet is just so distractingly naive. Then again I appreciate it’s YA and we’re not trying to go full dystopian yet. Also I’m not versed enough in science to know if all of those things would happen. An EMP from a comet? A tsunami of water that seems to still have not receded? After the nuclear winter, the ozone layer will disappear? But again I don’t know enough to dispute this, but it sounds heavy||

So I finished and my final thoughts are just ||like what do you mean you picked up a 16 year old girl off the street and not only are like "no we only take people on board if they have skills. Oh you're organized? Well ok then!" despite none of this family having any ability to actually follow orders or work as a group, arguably one of the most important traits if you're going to be working on a generation ship. And then by the end it's like, yeah not only can you and your mom stay, neither of whom have any actual useful skills, but we're also just going to completely change the way we operate cause you suggested it." Like if I was on that ship I'd be screaming bloody murder

Story-wise, it was just kind of lacking a focus. It felt very YA in that stuff is just kind of happening and the main character is reacting to it. I didn't feel like the side characters were very well developed, and everyone was just too dang nice. Like the number of opportunities the ship had to just steal shit from people instead of being nice and letting them on the ship. Of course it's highly unethical, I just don't see people being so well-mannered at the end of the world. I think I'm going to have to give this a 2.5||

• the mother is already upsetting me, imagine being this nonchalant about going to a BUNKER that is hopefully going to protect you from a COMET? i truly can't understand the reasoning behind that, but fuck it we move
• i'm already relating to the main character a lot, especially with the smaller parts of how she's moving/ thinking.

• the 'support' from someone around you that doesn't actually help you, it just makes them feel better. ||

i understand why this is used in a lot of autistic lit, because it is a very common feeling for autistic people but i am so tired of reading this exact line over and over again. don't just straight up tell me, show me ||

• ms maasland; as disgusting as i think it is to play with peoples lives like this when they're helping you, i understand. she did what she needed to do to protect herself and her loved ones. feels bad for denise though*.
  *it was mentioned just before that they 'hardened' themselves over the past few months so they'd be able to do what they needed to (ex. protect themselves over other people, probably take resources from others if necessary etc) but that is immediately nullified by denise's mother. ||

i do appreciate seeing the dynamic between an autistic child & mentally ill parent, as that's what i've experienced myself, but it could be so much better if they actually explored the mothers character. or even had more complex discussions on the way denise & iris feel about her.||

It's a shame because the premise sounded so cool and I was really hoping for Wall-E vibes or something similar but oh well. Still hate the mom, don't know why I shouldn't she stayed the same, Iris is just ok and the MC is also just meh. None of them felt very fleshed out and i'm disappointed they dragged out boring parts but skipped over the itneresting ones. Like the niece?? hello is the baby alive or not?? The entire "oh there aren't helicopters" and them deciding to stay and help just felt like a cheap last-attempt at an attention grab. I'm feeling underwhelmed tbh. That said, I did appreciate reading a new type of POV and the beginning was well-written it just.... fizzled out too much||

1a. i think everyone is probably gonna unanimously vote for the mother ||she is selfish right from the start to the end, doesnt respect her daughters and is also lowkey racist||
1b. ||Iris and Max, iris is very brave and protective and so is max. i like characters like that||
2. ||the concept was sooooo interesting, the execution was not as good as it could have been. i really like the idea of the ship and bunkers and the whole flooding thing was cool too. ||
3. ||probably not having the mom be annoying for no other reason than she is. ||

Change to more of a realistic focus and have some actual conflict in there that makes sense, make the Captain guy more of a Captain ........ the list goes on ||
