Welcome to the BR for The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna, dear readers! Thank you so much for joining me for this buddy read. We start Jan 16 and will go until Feb 28, 2025!

Here are some introductory questions to start us off:

  1. Is this your first book by the author or have you read her before? If yes, which book(s) and what were your thoughts about them?
  2. What drew your interest to this book?
  3. If you were a witch in a fantasy story, what kind of witch would you be and what kind of fantasy world would you be living in?

Blessed be, my witchy friends! Enjoy the book!

  1. Yes it is
  2. I heard a lot of good things from both the internet and my friends so I kept procrastinating on it by saying 'Ill read it in October cause halloween' but never ended up doing it somunching - time to lock in
  3. The first thing that comes to my mind is the fairies from Tinkerbell <3. I love how their powers are related to nature of all sorts. I remember back in the day it made me be more careful and appreciative of it as well so - great movie(s)

Heyy pleased to meet you guysss

  1. It is the first book I read by this author.
  2. I didn't read what the Book is about, but I like witchy books in general, so I am excited for this one
  3. I like when witches are playing a "negative" role. Like as a misunderstood villain.
I have to think about the TV show Salem. Loved the witches there and the herbs and dark vibes. So I would be a herbs witch living deep in the forest. People coming to me when they are desperately seeking for help

Is this your first book by the author or have you read her before? If yes, which book(s) and what were your thoughts about them?
First time!

What drew your interest to this book?
I was listening to other witchy books on Audible and this was recommended to me.

If you were a witch in a fantasy story, what kind of witch would you be and what kind of fantasy world would you be living in?
I would want to be a reclusive nature based witch that helps other but doesn't get called into high pressure situations often. Maybe something reminiscent of the House Witch.

So sorry I missed your question yesterday! Vaydium is right (thanks @sinful loom ), info about the buddy read is usually pinned so you can find it on the pinned messages for the timeline of the BR - this BR runs from Jan 16 to Feb 28, and you can read and post your thoughts here anytime during the BR to get your points. Sometimes we can extend the timeline if multiple people need more time, depending on the situation. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have more questions! ❤️

So I am currently at chapter 3
|| it was a little exhausting at the beginning. Don't ask me why.
But so far I enjoy the storyline.
At first I got confused when Ian's group got introduced, but thank god it got clarified.
And somehow I can't really imagine these guys being old. But it's just an imagination thingy ig ShrugFreg ||

  1. It will be my first book from this author.
  2. The cozy vibe. It's not a genre I read much, but somehow this one really caught my eye. Probably because it reminds me of a childhood book I used to love
  3. I'd love to be a good witch who is related to nature. And I'd love to live in a world where magic isn't a secret and it's happily accepted
velvet fulcrum
#

So I reached chapter 7
|| nothing special happened so far. I like the cozy cottage vibes the story gives. And I like the humor. I am kinda afraid that the story pulls to long and I lose attention and interest in continuing. But so far so good.
PS. If I was a witch I would directly use the spell with the spiders.||

  1. This will be a reread for me, but I loved it and with a new book coming I wish this was happening closer to the next books release date but oh well - it'll be nice to see others reactions to this
  2. I have been in a cozy fantasy mood for awhile now - plus I like witches, Practical Magic might still be my favorite movie (I didn't like the book as much as I'd hoped) so anything that is genre adjacent to PM I'll probably read ❤️
  3. I would want to be one of those witches with a small shop and herbs and such everywhere. Or just straight up Angela from Eragon (the series not the movie). Universe wise - give me a modern magical fantasy setting, with working plumbing kthx

Finished,|| I loved the characters and their relationships , mainly the kids and sweet Mika. They're my favourite characters, especially Terracotta.Lillian being dead and primrose being her twin sister was not something I expected,i thought badly about Lillian and primrose in the beginning felt guilty at the end for that. It's understandable why kids and all adults feel about Lillian that way but I personally think primrose isn't as much of a Gorgon Mika made her.
James and Mika are good together but all my attention is on kids and other characters, I liked other relationships more than their romantic relationship. The Last chapter was so good with all witches together and with a party atmosphere. Overall it's a cute and comfort read, 4.5🌟||

I really enjoy this book. I listened to the audiobook in 2023 and liked it so much I had asked for a copy as a gift. My impression so far up to chapter 5: I forgot how quick the book moves along. Really liking the pacing. How about you?

That's niceee! Good that you mentioned the pace. I didn't notice but you are right. It doesn't feel that I am stuck in the story at all. That's super good because the most books I read felt like being stuck at the same scene for 3 chapters.

cerulean goblet
#

Just started last night, I'm up to Ch 5. So far I'm really loving the vibes! ||This feels like it's going to be a found family sort of story and I love it! I wonder how true is it that witches aren't supposed to hang around each other or if that's just Primrose's way of keeping everyone apart. It's so sad that Mika was always alone and had to figure things out herself, I'm really hoping that she and the rest of the ensemble will find out that they don't have to be alone, and Mika will find a home here with them. It really seems to be leading up to that. It better be!!!! I also really love the whole idea of being able to pack a koi pond into your car and bring it wherever you go kek Obviously if it was me, it wouldn't be a koi pond, it'd be a Beauty and the Beast type library poobSmirk ||

sinful loom
cerulean goblet
#

Up to Ch 17 ||It still feels really nice and cozy so far, Terracotta got herself in danger and Mika saved her at great peril to herself and ended up in her "hibernation" mode, which sounds so interesting. She's fine, no worries, and finally won Terracotta over. It's all so warm and fuzzy!!! And of course it looks like she's winning Jamie over too, of course, of course kek How could he not fall for her after she so selflessly sacrificed herself for one of his kids? ||

||Still, everything is so nice and sweet and cozy and we're about 60% in, and I'm wondering if it's going to stay nice for long. Mika just had her meeting with Primrose, and Idk, Primrose doesn't seem open to the idea of witches gathering in numbers. I'm not sure what's going to happen if/when Primrose finds out. And/or when that lawyer comes. I wish everything would stay nice... but if they can't stay nice, I know everything will end up nice! I know it! I have expectations of HEA for this book! ||

I finished this a couple of days ago and forgot I hadn't posted my final thoughts.

||I'm quite disappointed with the later part of the book, unfortunately. The first part of the book was pretty good, I had hoped it would get better but I feel like the deeper we got into it, the more it felt like this book is all over the place. An important thing I want to address is that I'm not a prudish reader and I love spicy books just as much as the next spicy reader, but I didn't expect the sex scenes from this book to be on the page. Maybe it's my fault for not doing proper research on the book and judging a book by the cover, but I assumed it was a pg-13 cozy vibey book and it's not. I'll be honest and say that I've read books with on page sex scenes before I turned 13 but it's not about the age for me, tbh, it's that I feel like it didn't belong here, it's not necessary to the story blobShrug ||

||I also feel like it got so messy at the end with the way they tried to resolve their problems. I mean, finding out that four grown-ass adults who are supposed to be responsible for three very impressionable kids decided to hide Lilian's body instead of dealing with it from the beginning is kind of stupid and makes me think less of them. The lawyer isn't the bad guy here, even if the author tries to portray him as such. I also think that Mika being more angry that they kept a secret from her instead of being angry that they even did it in the first place is nonsense. Forget about what the secret is, I don't know why she'd expect them to trust her when they didn't even know her at first. It's really not something to be angry about, and it's honestly a red flag if anyone thought they were entitled to my secrets before I got to know them well.||

More coming

cerulean goblet
#

||Finally, Primrose at the end arguing with Mika about the kids - first, that the kids can't stay together because witches can't be together. Then later that her sister wanted the kids to be raised by a witch. Was she going to raise them? Because she obviously didn't raise Mika and left her with nannies instead. It's like, Primrose is the leader of a secret witch society and she allowed her own trauma to dictate the Rules for every single witch in her society? That's really fucked up. That whole convo revealing Primrose's issues and reasons for coming up with those Rules, that's abusive and horrifying. This is not a cozy read for me kekcry I ended up not really liking any of the characters, not liking the story, feeling blindsided by the direction it went. I don't want to be a hater, but I'm just really disappointed catSadKitten ||

visual sequoia
#

Chapter 14: || I'm really enjoying the slow relationship building of Mika and Jamie. I find the fantastical bits like collecting star shards and the more homely tea potions to all be quite alluring. This is definitely and cozy book with a nice mix of humor and emotions. The perfect read for me know after finishing some more serious books. ||

visual sequoia
#

Chapter 16: || "That is because I believe what you put in your body is your business and that includes penises." 😂🤣 😂 🤣 I absolutely was not expecting that from Primrose. ||

rancid siren
#

Chapter 28 ||So many plot twists! What do you mean Primrose is Lillian's sister? Wow, I didn't expect any of this. I'm looking forward to see how it ends||

visual sequoia
#

Chapter 18: || Ken coming in strong with all of the feels. This obligation that Jamie is feeling to go to his mother's birthday has me really wondering about his past. Also, from a couple of chapters ago, I wasn't expecting the manipulative nature of Mika's relationship with her previous boyfriend and some of her nannies. I was expecting horror and shunning, the manipulation cuts so much deeper. ||

rancid siren
#

Finished! ||I honestly have mixed feelings about this book. I really liked the premise and the characters, as well as the house and the setting. At the same time, I felt the plot twists by the end came out of nowhere and were a bit rushed. Everything turned out to be fine so quickly and without any negative effects. I understand this wants to be a cozy book, but I felt that the cause-consequence effect was a bit off. Also, I sometimes got the feeling the book was trying to convince you of things that weren't happening (for example, that Primrose is mean, when everything we see her do or say is actually quite nice!). Still, I enjoyed the lightheartedness of the story and I will give it probably 2.5 stars. I'm glad I read it though.||

velvet fulcrum
#

Chapter 10 || how funny is Ian please? And how fucking cute is Jamie for "losing his mind" for Mika kekcry ||

velvet fulcrum
#

Chapter 11 || „He plucked a ladybug out of her hair. His hand brushed the shell of her ear and she backed away quickly, tucking her hair behind it and pretending to be very interested in the ladybug he’d rescued.“
I can't help myself but thinking about this debby ryan meme||

sinful loom
#

Chapter 11: ||I like the whole nice vs kind speech they have in the car. It's really true that they are two different things. I like the way they describe it. Although she keeps saying Jamie isn't nice but she doesn't say he is kind either... I think when I read it the first time this part made an impression on me, but I had kind of forgotten about it. Nice to revisit this idea.||

visual sequoia
#

Chapter 24: || Whoa... I was not expecting Lillian to be dead in the garden. My heart is breaking for Mika. I'm screaming for her not to leave but that is a lot of lies and manipulation for someone who has been consistently manipulated to have to deal with. ||

visual sequoia
#

Finished last night. I give this a 4.5/5.
|| I overall loved the vibes and personalities in the story. Towards the end, there was just enough spice and drama and chaos to make the story really fun without taking it out of cozy territory. There were a lot more emotional moments than I was expecting, so this was closer to the edge of cozy than some other cozy books I've read before but I really loved the way Mika and Jamie's relationship developed and they slowly began to trust each other despite their pasts. ||

Hey Witchy Readers, we’re about halfway through this BR with three weeks to go. How are you doing with the book? Let me know where you are!

Here’s what I have for the current status of readers, please let me know if I missed anyone.

Finished: Keya, haze, laia, Really A Cat

Reading: mochichan, Vaydium, Avialia

And here are some additional discussion questions if you need them;

For those who haven’t started the book:

  1. What are some of your favorite witchy books and why did you like them?
  2. If you were a witch, what would be your favorite frivolous spell to cast?

For those who have finished the book:

  1. Who was your favorite character and why?
  2. Do you think ||Primrose was justified in isolating the witches for their protection? Why or why not?||
  3. If you were a witch and ||had to keep it a secret from the public as per this world’s rules, would you keep it closely guarded, or is there someone you would tell? Who and why?||

Please use spoiler bars where necessary. Thanks and happy reading!

  1. Mika. || Despite her lonely past and many cases of emotional abuse and manipulation, she tries to focus on the positive and is optimistic and friendly towards others. She is kind and witty even though she is afraid to form long-term relationships. I did love Altamira for her one-offs though: "that was some excellent Mary Poppins shit right there" and "Damn it, Primrose" anytime Primrose is mentioned. ||
  2. || I think her heart was in the right place but she was too rigid and controlling to consider listening to others about other possible solutions. ||
  3. || I would tell family and friends that I trusted and loved. I, like Mika, would be far too lonely and feel isolated if I could share who I really was with at least those I cared about. ||

  2. || I think she did the best she could with the way she was raised. I loved how she also showed character growth by accepting Mika's attempts to bring the witches together more. ||
  3. || Pfffew I'd probably keep it a secret. I always do what the 'leader' asks of me, I'm not really rebellious, so I think in this world I would've followed Primrose's rules and kept to myself without sharing the secret. Wouldn't want to possibly cause harm to any other witches either by sharing! ||

To elaborate on this, || I enjoyed the vibes a lot. The whole atmosphere around it reminded me a bit of 'The house in the cerulean sea' and so I really vibed with it. I also definitely saw the romance coming from ten miles away but who cares, they're so sweet together. This was just such a nice palate cleanser for me that was pretty light. Up to ch 10 ||I'm still enjoying the book, but I have to say that this whole set up is a bit unconvincing. Ch 24 ||Wow! I was not expecting that! This is some serious bertayal from everyone, Mika didn't deserve this. Especially considering her history. 2. ||No, I think her measures were extreme. They could still be protected without so much isolation. I think it was doing them more harm than good. She allowed her past experiences to rule her instead of doing thing that was more logical.||
