I’m ready
Let’s gooooooo
Yessss! I've been absent for a few months, but I'm ready to get back in the game. This is a great book to start with.
kaikeyi was doomed from the start…a tragedy

It literally almost made it, lmao
tink don’t ruin the essence of our victory

Choco sees a book tie and then lose by 12 votes in a tie-breaker: is this book doomed by the narrative?

I’ve been reading this and trying to finish it for months (not because I don’t like it, it just became one of those books) and this is the perfect motivation to finish!
hold #5 on 11 copies of this book at the library, should be easy enough to get before the end of June!
Yesss I have mine on the way to my library!
This gives me an excuse to buy the physical copy! I hope I can find it though
Hey all, I was wondering if theres like a reading guide for the BOTM?
there’s really no explicit rules except read the book within the month and write your thoughts (and move to the finish thread when you’re done)
#book-club message
ohh i see
thank you!!
I bought it!!! can't wait to start
A TRAITOR
IM READING BOTHHHHH
Has anyone started reading this?
no I'm holding off until it officially starts
I read one page last night before nodding off to sleep. Guess I'm on schedule lol
im waiting as well hah
I absolutely love this book. Have fun everyone!
Mine is still on the way to my library hopefully it arrives soon
hello hello hello!!
Welcome to the June Book of the Month!
The server goes by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), meaning that Good Omens officially begins <t:1717200000:R>
If this is your first event in the server, our Book of the Month is meant for a large group to collectively decide on a book to read, and then discuss the story as we read it together throughout the month.
If you read the book within the timeframe, and discuss your thoughts, then you get the chance at earning reader points ❤️
You can find more info in our #faq
Prepare your books! Good Omens begins in just a few hours.

lets gooo
Alright! 🙂
Yeeaahhh buddy! So excited
I don't think I was tagged in this?
Because you were already in the thread
ah damn it won haha
How do you guys manage to read multiple books at the same time?
Brain rot
Cause like I’m reading Kaikeyi for a buddy read and I also wanna participate in this BOTM
Mostly if I’m going to read different books at the same time, they’ll be different genres, maybe ones a reread, or different formats. Like I’ll have an audiobook for work and a physical book for chill out time, etc
I think you’ll find they’re really different so there shouldn’t be too much issue with confusing the plot or anything. So then you just have to figure out how to split your reading time
i manage it by avoiding it
Oh ok! I think I’ll try and finish kaikeyi first as I’m already 3 chapters in!!
i just got here and i really want to join all your previous books look so good. ill get the book rn and try to read asap
According to my Kindle, I'm only 9% of the way through and I'm loving it so far! I really want to check out the tv series after this.
I'll be watching the show after reading as well
Is the next season the last one?
I've seen some clips that had me laughing, I love the actors. Right now I'm listening to the audio book cocurrently to reading the book and the narrator's voices are quite great. I really think I'm going to like this book, and I hope I'm not wrong!
yes season 3 is the last one.
but season 1 already is the whole book and the rest of the series is added stuff
Yes same I've been curious about the show
it took me a while to get through the first part, its difficult for me to imagine this
but im on part 2 and its flowing easier
Same! The show is how I got into neil gaiman’s stuff
I won't be reading Good Omens due to finals, but I am here to cheer everyone on.
I’m not rereading this either, but I love both the book and show, so I’m just lurking
Also, this audio production is epic https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/62d4b0fd-3466-4a5c-bb93-336aafe752ab
i'm starting this today just finished #1231183270503251990
||I love Good Omens so much. I love how Aziraphale and Crowley debate which one of them was responsible for the Reign of Terror so nonchalantly and treating it like it's an IOU.||
I’ve started this and like 40% through so far. Listening to the audiobook narrated by the cast of the show (I think?) and it’s so much fun
||Aziraphale and Crowley are such good fun honestly and I’m loving their parts but like certain other bits feel kinda dull though and find myself just glossing over a lot of that
I think since everything kinda plays out just like the show, I’m not finding it hard to keep up but I feel I might have had I read the book first ||
Finished this last night! Honestly had nothing to comment on or any thoughts while reading. The book was a breeze and having watched the show fairly recently, it felt like I was rewatching but like my mind playing the visuals instead
This was literally me through the book like no kidding
I have some final thoughts that I’ll share on the other thread but it’s currently quite lonely there
in the beginning ||loving the tone of this book already||
also in my copy, in the forward its mentioned that a copy of this book is in the vatican library, which i find interesting
probably wont be reading this this month, im just here to see peoples thoughts
That's so cool!!
I started
Eleven Years Ago
||I watched the show a couple years ago and I can still see some of the scenes flashing by in front of my eyes when I'm reading! The show is actually very close to the book, but I like that I watched the show first so I can picture Crowley and Aziraphale convincingly in my head. The word choices are very British lol, and I fear sometimes I misunderstand things. However, I'm still having so much fun with it!
The duck feeding park filled with spies is my fav spot in the book besides Aziraphale's bookshop
||
Yessss!|| The show’s such a close adaptation!! Plus I listened to the audiobook narrated by the cast so it was double pleasure listening in to David Tennant’s Crowley and Sheen’s Aziraphale
I felt the same way as you btw, had I read the book first, a lot of it might have been a tad bit confusing and like it’s being way too ambitious or something. Still fun though. Also yeah, the duck feeding might be my favourite too but just because of my fluff balls interactions there
||
Eleven Years Ago
||This little piggy is metal.
||
Wednesday
||It's fun to see them teaching a child, but I sometimes wonder how things would be if they went to the right child -- the Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness (you can see I love his titles lol). ||
Its the same for me, ive been marking all the things that were exactly the same in the book and show
I am 2 hours into the audiobook & honestly, I am kinda lost but entertained. How?😅
That’s fair lol
I finished
This book is taking me a while to read…
Events are not wrapping up as fast as I expected them to
I just picked up my book yesterday, I'll start it soon!
started this! so far I'm giggling away. I like the ||implication of Crowley making Manchester and it being his proudest evil feat. I also like that the authors poke fun at hippies playing guitars as a great evil in the world in the same vein as the KKK. so far the book is goofy and I'm enjoying the tongue-in-cheek tone||
Starting now!
Starting Now!!!
read chapter 2! I'm pretty busy with school so I'm not moving very fast through this, but I'm still having fun. I'm entertained by the ||swapped baby trope, and the fact that Aziraphale wants to stop the world from ending because if it did, he could only listen to music by people in the "good" camp and that wouldn't be enough diversity, or wouldn't leave him enough music that he enjoys
valid imo. I also enjoyed the whole section about his second hand bookshop that he tries not to sell books from, and his collection of bibles with print errors. ||
The || secondhand bookshop || had me cracking up almost the entire time.
me too! I especially love the ||printing of the bible that includes the Lord asking Aziraphale where he put the flaming sword||
Yes, that was awesome 🤣!
started this yesterday
Thursday|| five hundred tons of uranium missing and in that place is lemon drop, Adam did this without knowing ?? And I didn’t expect an entire day devoted just to Adam Young but it's so interesting||
Starting today
read chapter 3! the highlight for me|| was the hell hound changing itself into a cute puppy so its master would love and accept it, and Adam naming it Dog which may not be sufficient in the eyes of Hell to count as a name||
Aziraphale has ||Agnus Nutter's prophecy so things are really going to get rolling now||
until saturday ||im moving at the pace of a snail with this book. not that into the plot but i like aziraphale. he seems cool||
im like 30% in and ngl ||not vibing with this book at all... ill give it til like 50% before dnfing ig
||
eleven years ago
||i love the tone of this book
it’s so fun to read. the characters introduced are so random but it’s also hilarious so who cares
this is just what i needed after reading two disappointing books||
||the fact that aziraphale and crowley are friends and interact normally is so funny
the drunk scene lol||
Eleven Years Ago
I’m 50% in and I’m loving the book! It is funny but at the same time can be confusing. But I think it is awesome so far!!!
Started reading Good Omens cause I just needed something easy to read last night, forgot just how fun it is
I am also halfway through the book. I'm enjoying ||seeing all the characters converge on Adam's location. He's making outrageous things occur around him and doesn't seem to have noticed, which is goofy. I liked the UFOs threatening punitive action for our treatment of the Earth haha||
I'm a big fan of Anathema, she's pretty easily my favorite character so far. I also like what we've learned so far about Agnes Nutter. Aziraphale|| has finished reading the book of prophecies so we'll get to see what he does next, and that should be fun.||
I'm halfway through too! This has been very cool so far ._. And I hope to finish the book tomorrow
The bits with the ||horsemen|| are cool too but the tone doesn't match imo
I think Sable's whole thing is very funny
oh do you think? I actually find ||the horsemen really compelling||
oh do you think? I
actually find ||the horsemen
really compelling||
Yes
I like seeing how they're personified
Oh definitely, i just don't think it fits
thanks Haiku
Everything is just so funny
I havent laughed a whole lot, but I think it's all amusing for sure
I havent laughed a
whole lot, but I think it's all
amusing for sure
Neil Gaiman is a cool dude. I really liked The Ocean at the End of the Lane
I occasionally read something, stop and read it again, and then go "heh"
I need to read Terry Pratchett one of these days
I read a lot of his kids books when I was younger too
I love Terry Pratchett my mother got me into reading some of his stuff
And I hope to read some more Neil Gaiman in the future
There's this really awesome hardcover illustrated version that I got a copy of
Bit expensive for a book but absolutely stunning imo
Bit expensive for
a book but absolutely
stunning imo
I bet
And I love modern fantasy even if it's just at someone's cottage
Yes some of those books can be so fascinating
I like modern fantasy (and I suppose Good Omens applies too) because it tempers more of the parts of fantasy novels that make me roll my eyes
And the suspension of disbelief is easier to swallow
I mean I will pretty much read anything in the fiction genre lol
Yeah romance novels can be like stop please stop
SERIOUSLY
Like just ew please stop
Especially when straight women write romance novels about gay men
Disturbingly common
And we ain't friends like that Becky
Yeah
But ive read some good romance stories
No novels yet bc i feel like it's hard to drag that out so much
Real romances are just boring
Yeah there are good ones and bad ones
Like i love my boyfriend but we aren't that interesting
You can't make a romance book out of sitting at home and watching Netflix
How is everyone doing on their reading of Good Omens?
I'm up to Wednesday and am having a lot of fun with the bits I forgot about (e.g. the appearances of the four horsemen earlier in the book)
wednesday
||first of all, the titles for the baby
this whole chapter was just
i love crowley being chill and then there’s aziraphale being himself. the characters are so fun too||
I'm up to 70% through the book! I feel like the board is set and I'm looking forward to seeing how all the pieces come into play. ||Crowley is currently on his way to find Adam. I really enjoyed the scene of him defeating the demons who had come to collect him. Aziraphale seems to be hopping around the world in spirit form? We'll see what kind of shenanigans ensue from that. I'm also very invested in Newt and Anathema. ||
It's feels like I'm forcing to read this book
The book and me somehow don't want to vibe
That was a cool bit
Honestly my main issue is that
But I can look past it bc it's enjoyable enough even with the meandering
I don't like how ||the main protagonists are just absent for the whole middle of the book, and this wouldn't be so bad if they weren't introduced first and put on the cover of the book like they not gonna deadbeat on you||
Spoilers for up to Saturday maybe
yeah agree ||i didnt give a flying fart about all those side characters
i wanted az and crowley||
All of those parts WERE necessary but where they fucked up was not adding parts with them in between
I totally agree that there's a huge section in the middle ||where Aziraphale and Crowley are just not present, where the authors are sort of setting the scene or setting up the other moving parts of the story, and I really missed them and kept hoping we'd come back to them soon||
I get what people mean by meandering. I kind of feel like this book is written like a tv show, like each little section is a scene from a show, and making sense of it that way has helped me understand a bit more of what the authors are doing, maybe
Yeah and those parts WERE good but it is not what anybody signed up for, || I DNF'd this book a couple years ago on audiobook bc i couldn't stand the narrator droning on about random dudes||
also Neil Gaiman previously wrote graphic novels right, so maybe each short section is like a page or a panel from a graphic novel? I get the feeling that he's a very visual writer
Also iirc this was his first novel
Which is e v i d e n t
Pacing wise
But I'm still really enjoying it, and he's a super amusing writer
I'm definitely gonna have to read American Gods soon
I have Ocean at the End of the Lane and Stardust on my tbr, I think I'll keep them there and revisit Gaiman in the future
Ocean at the End of the Lane was awesome
it'll be interesting to compare, to see how much of this book is a combination of him and Pratchett
nice!
Apparently, back when Pratchett was alive, both of them would insist that the other did 90% of the work
haha that tracks
Honestly as much as I fucking adore the tv show (I'll get around to watching season two eventually shush) it is very much an Az and Crowley-focused show which I adore but also can make the book feel like its lacking them a lot
But also I'm a collector of weird guys so I am here for all the other characters
(Anathema is my favourite but also that is because I am very gay and the woman who plays her in the show is gorgeous)
See I never watched the show past 5 minutes of pilot because it Looks Cringe
And the lack of protagonist in the story still bothers me
|| When Crowley’s car was on fire and burning the dude giving him detections we so confused || 🤣🤣
33 minutes left!!!!
i started watching season 2 again today (it‘s my comfort show) and now i also picked up the book again
might look like a weird order/combination to an outsider but i‘m excited
In the Beginning
|| i can’t help but read the dialogue in the voices of David Tennant and Michael Sheen ||
I finished it!!!
Eleven Years Ago
|| i just love this introduction of the characters and Crowley and Aziraphale‘s dynamic is just too good ||
Wednesday
|| I just love how Anathema thinks that Crowley & Aziraphale are a gay couple
|| ||(because they are) ||
I like that the authors leave it open-ended, you can read them as a sort of couple, or you can read them as two entities who are platonically very close with one another, and that vibes with me
i mean it was the 90s, || i think Neil said before that they couldn’t write them explicitly as a romantic couple ||
that makes sense!
I'm 37% in and I'm mostly enjoying it so far! It did take me a while to get into it, and watching the first episode of the TV show helped with that a lot. I'm very ambivalent about the meandering. Sometimes it's nice, other times I just wanna get back to the main story lol. And right now ||I'm itching to go back to Crowley and Aziraphale please, I wanna see Aziraphale's reaction to the book other than being super engrossed in it||
Also I'm loving the jokes about ||all of Crowley's cassette tapes turning into Queen's Greatest Hits in his car|| and the tangents about ||Crowley turning fake guns into real guns||
Honestly it's not open ended. It says in the book that Aziraphale isn't gay
does it? I haven't come across that yet then. All I've found so far is that he comes across as gay
or that people think he is gay
It says something like "One's first impression of Aziraphale is that he is gayer than a pack of howler monkeys huffing nitrous oxide" or something like that
And then explains that he doesn't feel much of that in either direction at all
i only watched the first five minutes of the first episode and i thought that
I think the book describes angels as ||"sexless" which I actually read as them lacking sexual organs haha||
I mean the show is explicitly queer, and Gaiman is a very hands-on producer of the show, so we can take from that what we will as well
It also says that they lack those yes
Not everything is a gay fanfic, guys ._.
I personally prefer the platonic reading because I like when characters in books can have close relationships of various sorts without it necessarily being romantic, but it is also the case that Gaiman seems to have leaned into the queer reading of the book with his work on the show
so, you know, open to interpretation
oh so the book isn't queer but the show is?
But also Gaiman isn't the definitive speaker for what was intended with the book because he didn't write a portion of it
the book is not explicitly queer
but that is one reading
that's interesting
that's true, unfortunately Terry Pratchett has passed so we don't get his perspective, we only get interviews with Gaiman where he has said he's tried to be true to Pratchett's memory with the production of the show
I honestly love that it’s open to interpretation
I’m generally more into sweet platonic relationships and like to interpret it that way
But like yeah idk
I'm gay too guys but people need to calm down sometimes, straight men do exist
but like Katto pointed out, in the 90s there wasn't a ton of gay representation, so I can understand why that reading also mattered to folks
I mean, that's of course true, but I would say in this book there's no indication that either character is attracted to women, it's sort of either each other or nobody
at least, as far as I can recall
It's definitely nobody
Like they aren't people
i would like to say, neil gaiman has explicitly said that good omens is a love story on twitter, not talking about the show but the story itself
There are kinds of love that aren't romantic ? Like
yes there are, but usually when someone says "Its a love story" they arent talking about just friends 💀 if he meant it in the way that theyre just friends, hed have said it was a story about friendship
guys someone dm neil gaiman to confirm
/j
LMAOOO

haha just check his Tumblr, he responds to dms all the time
"dear mr gaiman, theres a debate in my bookclub right now that i need you to settle. are aziraphale and crowley in love or nah"
there's a Good Omens FAQ pinned to the top of his Tumblr, there might be something in there
i watched the show first, so that's gonna be my headcanon
That would imply im not tired and lazy
im actually considering this
it sounds pretty straightforward
LMAOOOOOO
i mean like i said he has clarified it before, i can find the tweet hes lichrally said its a love story
i did an essay on the queer rep in good omens nd while my focus was on the show did reference the book a lot, i know too much about this silly little book
an essay?
hell yeah
do you want me to send it you
i also did one about childhood trauma in IT HAHAHAH
LMAOO ILL DM YOU
finished! I like that ||this book is predicated on humanity as a kind of ambivalent force, neither good nor evil, and that Adam being left to come up as human made him resistant to ending the world and participating in the apocalypse. I also love that Anathema decided to burn the second part of Agnes Nutter's prophecies, rather than know what comes next||
|| okay so while the book isn’t explicitly queer i‘m still choosing to interpret like that because i watched the show first.
also yes, Aziraphale & Crowley are sexless and and genderless non-human entities who choose to present as men (most of the time) so calling them a male gay couple doesn’t track, but that’s not what’s important to me. what is important to me, is that they love each other and have a 6000 year slowburn going on. also in the show it’s made pretty clear that it’s not just queerbaiting.||
^ book & tv show discussion
Neil Gaiman also talked about how he and Terry Pratchett had actually talked about a sequel and plotted it (it was supposed to be called 668 - The Neighbour of the Beast) but they never wrote it. And sadly Sir Terry has passed away since but before he did he asked Neil to bring Good Omens to TV and so he did and Neil always talks about how he is honouring Terry‘s wishes with the adaptation. So yes, while Neil didn’t write the book by himself, he is the only one alive to talk about it but he is also explicitly saying that what he’s doing with the TV show is what Terry would’ve wanted as well. And Terry‘s estate is also involved in making it so i‘m just trusting Neil‘s word that the story is what it always was supposed to be.
(can you tell i‘m very passionate about this)
I'm only 30% through the book, but I'm loving it. I'm laughing a lot and highlighting a lot of quotes!
good omens may be one of my most highlighted books lol
It's very quotable!
I read a bit of this but I can't seem to get into it, I'm gonna have to dnf for now
started reading today... finished eleven years ago: ||i love how neither side wants the antichrist to be well-educated, just indoctrinated. || it's very similar to the show. the adaptation stayed very faithful.
wednesday: || im glad we're getting to spend more time with the backstories of some of the characters that were sidelined or minimized in the show. reading the book kind of feels like watching the director's cut ||
Saturday
|| > Don’t think of it as dying. Just think of it as leaving early to avoid the rush.
this quote always gets me and i want it on my gravestone, thanks ||
Fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the pope, and these nice red uniforms
thursday
||i love the way the characters are introduced
it feels so natural to the story and even the minor ones feel real. adam blowing up nuclear factories or something with lemondrops in his sleep, wonder how long aziraphale (get an easier name or i’ll start calling you az
) and crowley will take to figure that out before the apparent end of the world||
I started to watch the show and I think it is really good! I like how they change a few things and the actors are amazing the pretty much captured everything that I imagined while reading the book.
Finished the book ._.
My goodreads review (Very minor spoilers for Friday and the Beginning of Saturday, one may or may not say)
I also hated some bits like ||Shadwell's whole ass character existing to be annoying and him undercutting the tension of the finale by being a dumbo|| (Final bit of Saturday)
friday
||i loved how the perspective changed from az reading the prophecies to the them to az to the witch army. there’s many characters and it’s a bit difficult to remember their backstory at times but it’s still so fun in every pov
not az and crowley supporting the witch army though LOL||
finished... not much to say or add for a review other than i enjoyed the little bits of detail that were not in the show. it's a fun story overall
almost done with this
i watched the trailer for the show and im so excited to start it today
saturday
||
i was laughing so hard, not the whole gang of characters just confusing the one guard and that guy who wanted to write letters LOL
they kept coming one after another
love how this was so not serious ughhh this book is AMAZING
and crowley and az just chilling after the world almost ended ||
i’ll be moving to #1245034662321979402 now
Thursday
||I weirdly feel bad for Dog. He's confused, doesn't want to go into the house that he's being dragged into... I think it's cause my lil' pup is sleeping next to me though lol. I don't like seeing her confused or upset. 😆||
i‘m done
i just picked this up today, hoping to get to it as i’ve been stupid busy 🤦🏻♀️🫠
Eleven years ago ||I can't believe they didn't mention Paganini in the musicians in hell||
Same chapter ||Aziraphales Bible collection is actually so impressive
I know that there is only a few copies left of the wicked Bible and he has several rare bibles||
In the beginning: ||Crawly is making me think of a spider instead of a demon
||
Eleven years ago: Okay I like the tone of this already
||The M25 truly is awful though||
||I regularly drive on the roads they mention and idk why but it feels a little bit weird||
||Yep, just randomly dropping Bohemian Rhapsody lyrics||
||A nun being a satanist, how scandalous||
||Why is he not suspicious af of this nun when she’s talking so strangely? Open your eyes man||
||Uh oh, baby mix up
||
||Same Crowley, sleep is great.||
||I know people ship Crowley/Aziraphale when it comes to the show so I’m going to be
when it comes to their interactions in the book||
||Now how are you gonna call someone that you don’t really want to hang out with ‘my dear’?
||
||I don't like you but I'm going to spend my spare time with you type relationship. GIVE IT UP.||
to be fair it is || after like 6000 years together and they keep getting forced together by circumstance, i think it is explained. it's not just "i hate you, lets hang out"
||
||No I get that but they've done the whole 'we're enemies but you've been the one constant in my life for 6000 years so we're actually kinda friends'. It's cute.||
|| they basically have the same job also, so you know... common interests, shared hobbies... 😄 ||
it wouldn't surprise me at all if someone's done some fanart of them in a get along shirt tbh
haha yeah i think you can find all sorts of fanart and fanfic, they've been shipped since way before the show
Wednesday: ||I didn't realise a velocipede was a bicycle until I googled it so I was imagining like a dinosaur centipede hybrid
||
||A dog named Dog. Very practical.||
||Oooh, can Crowley not say words like godsend or blessing because he's a demon?||
|| he probably just doesnt want to be a hypocrite ||
possibly! ||I know it's demon lore in other stuff but different works have different rules||
||Them teasing each other over this bike repair is hella cute.||
Eleven years ago page 65||Okay so I assume Scarlett, Sable, Mr.white and the unnamed another is the 4 horsemen||
I feel like out of the two I'm definitely more of an Aziraphale
Wednesday: Not to get political but I think generally there are quite a lot of people who only focus on what's in front of them and not the wider context of current events
||Ooh, a person not having an aura is pretty spoopy.||
||Also only 3 days left of the world? Imagine having that knowledge and trying to change it.||
Friday: ||I love all the weird stuff they're asking about to see if the world is ending.||
kindle what do you mean the next chapter will take 3 hours to read??
kindle what do you
mean the next chapter will take
3 hours to read??
Saturday: yep, red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning
my granddad lives by that
||Predicting your own death must be awful because you know it's going to happen and won't be able to avoid it||
I want to read more about witches in history tbh, especially the pendle witches
||is it confirmed if Agnes Nutter is meant to be related to the real life alleged witch Alice Nutter or is it just a nod to that?||
||Assuming Anathema Device is a nod to it as well||
||Okay the lore about contact with heaven is really interesting. I think the only media I've consumed that has that is Supernatural and this is completely different.||
||Talking to plants and scaring them is a mood I'm afraid||
||He's so worried about Aziraphale when the bookshop is on fire
||
Starting the audiobook with Michael Sheen and David Tennant. Delightful
ooh I bet that's really fun!
It's pretty good, it's full cast too
the best type of audiobook
I actually don’t usually like full cast
the full cast audio book is great! i also really enjoyed it
Saturday: ||hey four horsemen!||
||Newt asking if auras like black holes are bad
what a silly question||
||Aziraphale wanting to see the best in people
||
