#recommendation channel

We used to have one, but I think it wasn’t used much. Now we just give/ask for recs in book talk or the genre channel
What are the pros to having a separate channel for this outside of using #book-talk ? /gen
I mean I guess to have them all in one place
Is that it
Idk it wasn’t my suggestion lol. I’m just trying to further the discussion. I agreed with getting rid of it, I like the genre channels better cause it’s more organized than just having all different kinds of books in one channel
people can scroll through it to find books that match their taste, people can answer questions easily, gives readers a way to find books similar to what theyve read way easier, and for new comers who might be nervous to ask for book recs since they dont know which channel to ask in
you could name it book-recs
readers can give a short sentence or two on why u should read it
if its not someone asking for a specific book
I like the saved history by genre, maybe a better way to do this would be to have the book-red be a thread in each genre that already has a channel?
That’s kind of what we do now, if someone shares a good list of recs, it gets pinned, but not single recommendations
oh ok, I was envisioning more of a buddy read format, where you can post for two reasons: 1 only ask for recs within the genre that follow certain themes/ideas and 2 a title/author for the recommendation, so that there will be a list ready for anyone who comes looking for book recs
I totally get it if the pinned messages do basically that, or if moderating a whole slew of new chats would be unrealistic, I am just looking for a way to reconcile this suggestion with what the server has already
Oh so not like, “I just read this book and it’s really good, here’s why I recommend it”? That’s more the format of the old channel we used to have, and a little bit people asking for recs
i mean that would be nice to have a list ready, then we won't have to keep asking in separate channels. so every recommendation can be listed basically?
oh that sounds good. we can just post books we would recommend, and a little bit about them. so anyone new to the server goes directly to that channel and finds some recommendations that they like from the ones we have posted already
yeah!!
so . . . do we do a vote or something?
im not very sure
No LOL
Ultimately it is up to the staff team to decide if and how to make suggestions work, but I'm already ok with doing it so it'll be added within the next week
i was close enough with the voting
We can vote then?
spicycheesecake asks: Create a separate channel for book recommendations (i.e. Bring back #staff-faves-💖 )
1⃣: Yes
2⃣: No
The benefit I see is that the requests for recommendations wouldn’t get buried in other discussions in the various channels. It would be a dedicated spot for ppl to ask, and more ppl might see it and respond
right, and the server may become more active if there is a whole channel of book recs
Yeah this server has been so dead lately /s
honestly
You really think so? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be flippant
Back when we had it the server was def not slow and it averaged 1 post a month
The people have spoken
After having asked for many recs with no response i am certain we need a rec channel 😭
Where are you asking?
I know personally, I see people ask for recs and I just don’t have any. Sometimes it be like that, unfortunately. I wish I had great recs for every request
It's likely that you're getting this outcome because you almost exclusively ask in #book-talk , one of our most active chats, and not in the genre channels 😬
On a super real level, if you’re looking for book recommendations, you should try acutely specific inquiries with AI. You can ask for books that resemble book X and book Y with Z undertones etc by ABC kind of author that deal with DEF topics. It’s pretty handy. That or sign up for something like StoryGraph and use the suggestion option for similar books and/or fill out the recommendation page and read the recommended books generated.
OLY MOLY
There was a time in my life where I was so involved with SG that I always looked through it's recs
And then I ended up with a maSSIVE TBR because I kept looking and
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 it was obsessive
technology is obsessive
oh yeah true 😭
Here's my suggestion which no one will see probably... ever.... "Bring back the comedy and humor channel! (much needed for these times?)"
It's still there lol
