I absolutely love how much detail there is at the beginning of this book. I can't rememebr much of the film, but I love the whole interaction with the || Weasley's using the Dursley fire and the ton tongue toffees! ||

Chapter 5-||I love the amount of detail in the beginning of the book compared to the movie. Since my copy is 600 pages I'm excited to be reminded of all the details that was left out. I like that Mr. Weasley stood up to the Durselys, and I like that they came to pick Harry up and invited him to the game with them. I'm excited to keep reading||

Chapter 10- ||The whole scene with Winky made me upset. Elves have no rights and it's really terrible no one does anything about it. The World Cup sounded amazing though, I wish I could've been there myself lol.||

Chapter 15-||I like that Hermione started S.P.E.W, it's a great idea. I also would've thought it would be pretty cool learning about the unforgivable curses. I'm excited to keep reading about the Tri Wizard Tournament, and more detailed information about everything||

Chapter 20- ||I think it's brilliant the different ways everyone was able to get the golden eggs from their dragons. Especially that Harry did it the fastest and had the most dangerous dragon. All the other champions are good people, I enjoy learning a little more about Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. Bagman seems very curious to me cause he's focused on Harry. I'm also glad Ron got his head outta his ass and believes Harry.||

Chapter 25-||Cedrics a good guy for helping him out with the next clue. I also love all these extra details that makes a lot more sense in this story than watching the movie. It's interesting that he sees Crouch's name on the map. I also feel bad for Hagrid, I wish people would stop treating him horribly. The Yule ball sounded cool too, I like that Krum is interested in Hermione cause shes not obsessed with him like the other girls are lol||

Chapter 30- ||I never remembered how severely different some of the people are. Crouch's son is portrayed as possibly innocent but in the movie he's shown as being vicious. There's a lot of other differences, but I'm glad this is a very chunky book. I love visualizing this story in a different way since the last time I read it. I forgot there was so much going on in the story that was relevant to voldemort rather than just the tri wizard tournament||

||you know I gotta say, I'm so upset by how much information was purposely not put in the movie. Like the whole story about Crouch and his son, and the heavy involvement with Sirius, and so many other scenes in this book. The Goblet of Fire movie was always kinda one of my least favorites, but as far as the book goes it's definitely one of the best ones. I look forward to the next one||

|| I love how Harry can use Sirius for his uncle/family to treat him "better" and he was able to swing going to the quidditch world cup without being locked up and boarded away. and Ron saying they'd get him Sunday at 5 regardless the answer his aunt and uncle gave 😅 ||

|| i can't image that feeling of having your name coming out of the goblet. and how the other kids from the other schools must feel with 2 hogwarts students competing, wouldn't seem fair to me. i love how everything's been described though-the way the castle looks, the arrival of the guests, and Hagrid all dressed up 😆 ||

Hermione explained it best though and was right to the point honest with Ron being jealous of Harry always having the attention. but, its never good attention so its a hard spot to be in really, as Harry's friend .. ||

|| this is just a self reminder how I enjoy books more than the movies. so much more detail and information was given. scenes from the 3rd task in the book were different than the movies-even though Harry and Cedric retrieve the cup together, it was just more of a "you grab it because xyz" "nooo you grab it because abc" I just liked the moment more in the story.
and the information on Nevilles parents too, also Rita Skeeter just being more awful in the book and she was really a beetle, of course Hermione figures that one out. I really felt bad for her this go around with all of the bullying. she gets it almost every book but this time was really cruel.
this is my favorite movie, but unsure if it's my favorite book. || I look forward to the next book! thanks for hosting this journey, Smeagy

I've finished!

Thoughts: || The book is a million times better than the film ever was. The SPEW shenanigans, Ludo Bagman, the kitchens in the school, how Fred and George came about the money for his joke shop, everything. It was explained so much better in the books, and honestly, I'm not feeling a little confused after reading it. In the film, I felt everything was rushed. I truly believe they left out some super important things. I don't even think we found out Rita was a beetle? I remember reading this as a kid, and I probably wasn't ready to read it back then, but I've come out of this BR with a 10/10 experience.... again! This book was where I started losing interest when I was younger, but now I think this has definitely been my favourite book of the series. So much was going on and I thoroughly enjoyed how everything tied together so nicely in the end. Winky's story was super impactful and there's much in here that I wish they had added to the film. ||

My least favourite in this books is definitely || Voldemort. They did an excellent job of capturing how evil this guy really is. He truly is the lowest of the low. ||

My favourite game was probably the || 2nd one! Obviously the older players knew what to do to combat underwater, but it was so interesting reading about how Harry had to combat it with no knowledge of any charms or spells that could help. ||

This book has become one of my favourites. I just can’t believe how much more is in the book, and I can’t believe how much they removed from the films! It’s made me so much more excited for the next books, as this is the furthest I remember reading when I was younger.

I see that rookiegenealogist have already finnished the book. There is however no toughts, so if you could please be so kind as to share that.

I wanted to ask a few questions to you all to get some discussion and reading going.

  1. Spoilers for the first chapter: ||This book starts with a prelouge/diffrent location taht the Dursleys. WHy do we think that JK desided to take this shift away from how she stared the three eaelier books?||
  2. Some of the things that can be a part of the enjoeble things with these books and this universe for many readers is the silly fixes to our muggle problems, or how the function of the wizarding world is. What is one example of this you can think of from the earlier books?
  3. When do you all think you will start with the book?

Chapter 1: ||A different way to open a harry potter book, I liked it. It really drew m, especially as it ended with Harry waking up. It really sets the scene for how things are going to be this year for Harry.
||
Chapter 2: ||Hermione and Ron would definitely say those things, Harry is one hubdred percent right.||

Chapter 3:|| I have not missed the Dursleys! I love how Harry talks back to them now. Love how Ron doesn't care if the Dursleys tell Harry he isn't allowed to go.
||
Chapter 4: ||Arthur is too pure. The twins are amazing as per usual. Rereading scenes with them is always a joy.||

Chapter 5: ||Harry was really surprised by Bill.||

Chapter 6: ||Imagine if a muggle came across a portkey. Cedric is nice but his Dad is full on, I get he's proud of his kid and all but still, calm down a little. Also its hard rereading books when you know the ending sometimes.

Chapter 7: ||Another reason Harry is not a ravenclaw. He didn't ever consider that other wizarding schools existed. However, regardless, Harry is generous with his friends and I like that||

Chapter 8:|| I thought Harry wanted Bulgaria to win, but on this page, its Ireland. Huh?? Also love how frustrated Fudge is that the Bulgarian minister pretended to not know English.||

Chapter 9: ||Harry conjuring the dark mark would be such a plot twist. Ron really is obtuse sometimes. Justice for Winky!!||

Chapter 10: ||Molly really loves her kids.
Also ugh Rita is so annoying. Also I get why Ron's upset by everything being second hand but its the best his family can do. That's why Percy is so driven to succeed I guess||

Chapter 11: ||All the Weasley kids are alike except for Percy I feel. Oh poor Neville, he just wanted to go to the Quidditch World Cup.||

Chapter 12: ||It took over 100 pages for Hogwarts to appear in the book and Peeves appears right away, its like a reward. Also I wonder what it is like being the sorting hat, only being used once a year. What does it do the rest of the year? I love how Dumbledore responds to Fred's comment.||

Chapter 13: ||Why didn't they drop divination? I suppose the class allows for funny dialogue. Also Draco got so offended when his Mother got brought up but its okay for him to have a go at Ron's Mother?||

Chapter 14: T||his chapter always makes me feel sorry for Neville. Also I'd like to see how SPEW would have been in the movies.||

Chapter 15: ||Almost up to the iconic chapter relating to the gobl||et.

Chapter 16:|| I love the twins and Lee's friendship. Also Harry really can't catch a break. I'm excited to reread the next chapter for a certain line||

Chapter 17||: DUMBLEDORE ASKED CALMLY. Also love how calm and collected Cedric is about this, he just isn't surprised. Ah yes, Ron's jealousy really is clear in this book.

Chapter 19: ||Ugh, I hate Rita and I hate Malfoy. Also it would be interesting to be a dragon keeper, definitely a risky thing though. Ron still cares about Harry, he just doesn't want to admit it.||

Chapter 20: ||Cheating is a traditional part of every game to be honest, unfortunately. Ludo is definitely betting on Harry, hence why he is offering him help. Glad Ron and Harry are friends again. Harry roasted Rita and I am here for it.||

Chapter 21: ||Not Percy singing lol.||

Chapter 22:|| I forget how young the characters actually are sometimes. Poor Eloise Midgen. If i was Hermione, I'd be upset with Ron too for making fun of girls' appearance. Glad Ginny is sticking up for Neville.||

Chapter 23: ||"Nah... presents" - same here Seamus. Also no wonder Parvati and Padma were annoyed.||

Chapter 29: ||Glad Dumbledore is defending Madame Maxine. Shows he defends not just those close to him that are victims of prejudice. The memory is interesting. Why am I not surprised Bagman was unintentionally giving information to Voldemort? Also I think it makes sense that Dumbledore reads the muggle newspapers.||

Chapter 30||: I'm so happy the Weasleys came to watch as Harry. Truly the family he deserved.||

Chapter 31: ||Of course things went haywire (I mean I've read this book a few times before so I expected it). RIP Cedric.||

Chapter 32 to end of novel:
||Certainly these are my favourite chapters. Very intense and interesting. I love what Harry does with the prize money. I remember being shocked about Mad Eye Moody when I first read the book, there are some subtle signs but even now, I still like the character in this specific book.||

Chapter 15 || the entrances of each school is so much more exciting than in the movie.

Makes much more sense how Hagrid and madame Maxine become close as well, with looking after the magical beasts.

So much preamble and setting up of characters before the tournament even starts. I think this is mg favourite book in the series yet (it is also my favourite movie) ||

I absolutely loved this and like how it steers away from being more kid-friendly. RIP CEDRIC.
The tension from knowing Voldemort is back makes me wanna keep reading the series instantly. ||

Q2 || I think the reaction was fair. Some thought Harry outsmarted the system and was smart, but others thought poorly of him bc of it. I didn’t like Ron’s reaction, ruled by jealousy. Thought he would have known Harry better than to think he signed up himself! ||
Q3 I think a bit of both, but he’s definitely learning more and becoming more confident in his abilities I think.
Q4 || I think people want to believe what’s safer. And also that Harry couldn’t have fought Voldemort…. People just stay in denial bc it’s easier ||

  1. ||The reaction amongst the others were probably as confused/shocked as Harry himself. For some people it shouldn't be justified like Draco Malfoy and other villains within the story.||

  2. ||I feel that Harry is not learning to become a wizard. I think it is more based on luck. For example if Harry didn't receive that snack for the second task, he would be out of running. Basically the other wizards cheated their ways to guide Harry to the win (or trap). Even towards the end Fawkes came and helped Harry in a near-death situation.||

  3. ||I think Harry is not believed because there were a fair amount of Death Eaters tried for their innocence. Few managed to be innocent and I believe many powerful wizards eye-witnessed a "riddance" of Voldemort.||

Review:

||I enjoyed reading this book because it just added more competition and excitement to the Hogwarts and Wizarding spirit. I liked that. As a person who really enjoys doing Hogwarts house-competitive things online, this made my heart warm. However, there was just one section that was a little blurry. The chapters before Hogwarts. I was able to understand it, but I have questions. Uhm, why does J.K Rowling always try to have Harry see Draco before school? I understand Arthur and Lucius work in the Ministry, but no space either way? I'm dying to see a set of pre-Hogwarts chapters without Draco/Lucius so badly...||

  2. This book is segnificantly darker than the earlier books in the series. Do we think that this could have made younger reader or the readers reading it for the less dark elements put away the series? Why? Why not?

27: ||It is quite sad how Ron is changing his story every time he is telling about being at the ocean bottom in the start. I understand how he wanst attention and spotlight. But he is often so very clearly jelous of Harry and it is sad when people are needing other people validation to be feeling ok themself. Atleast thats how it often feels with Ron overall how he acts in the series.

Also, just stating the obvious, how boring must it be to just stare at water and not be able to see anything. Just waiting untill they pop up oe after one. Sounds like it be very boring for sure||

STart of 37: ||I really appriciate that there is mentioned of Cidrics parants appriciating that Harry brought the body back. And that Harry is teling and explaing that he did not suffer and it was all quick.

Like it is nice to see that even in all the sadness they can be comforted by knowing he was not suffering when he died||

Finnished: ||Hmm, this is not my favorite Harry Potter book. Yet this is by far the worst one. It is clear to me that JK now wanted to build the story more towards a final big moment. And he does do that, things like introducing Voldermort she did sucseed to do. Personally I am not a big sports fan, so I am not sure I was super intrested in the whole Triwizard Tournament. In the other hand I do appriciate that in this book we get a wider knowledge of the whole Wizarding World, with also the Quiddich World Cup. Even tho a lot of this knowledge we had no need of at all what so ever.
The introduction of portkeys was relevant tho, an item that later in the book became quite relevant.
There was not anything special either on the posetive or negative style in terms of writeing. This is of course a middle grade series. In terms of writing that is noticeble, but also fully expected.

I do also have to say, as a sidenote. It is noticeble that JK got a lot more freedom in how big this book would be after the series got popular as there is moments that could almost be cut completly or very much shortned down||3.75/5

Ch20 || I prefer this version of the first task so much more than the film version! I always thought that version was super unbelievable and too dramatic.
Also, if I had been Harry I definitely would have been more salty with Ron when he finally came around 😂😂 I would not forget that easily, but I think it's sweet that Harry does. ||

  1. || My favorite part was Hermione helping Harry study, and later Ron joining in too and both of them helping him with his spells. I always love seeing more magic and spells being learned and utilized in the story! ||
  2. || I think children who grew up with Harry Potter (like me) also grew with the series and were more mature when this one came out compared to when the first book came out. Also I think we've been building towards the return of Voldemort since book 1 and the stone, so we always knew this was coming. Combine that with the characters growing up too, it's a natural course I think. Also I don't think it was thát dark (yet), so I think it would've still been appropriate. ||

Ch 1 - 8: || I really enjoyed the Quidditch World Cup moment. Love seeing the Weaslys and Hermione and Harry interact all together, such a cozy family (and complicated but well hehe). And I always enjoy seeing other countries in the Magical World, this book is one of my favs just for the sheer amount of info that we learn!!||

Ch 17 ||I never liked a lot Ron but re reading this book I remember why I couldn’t stand him agh. He’s so annoying like stop projecting, seriously why Harry would enter the tournament and not tell you, be for real. Also I always laugh when I compare the way Dumbledore reacts to Harry entering the tournament in those book vs movie comparisons lmao||

me too honestly, ||but maybe i’m biased cause i never liked Ron. I get that he feels ignored always, but it’s not like the attention that Harry receives it’s the positive kind!!! He’s very immature honestly. Also, Harry is too, I didn’t remember how much of an idiot he was sometimes towards Hermione, their movie dynamic it’s certainly better, more true friendship and best friends. I love their brotherly/sisterly bond. In the books sometimes I feel like he treats her like a sort of second plate to Ron.||

Final thoughts - ||This was always my second fave book out of the saga. I don’t know if i’d put it in that place now, cause i haven’t re read the rest of them for a while. Also, even though this saga brings me some kind of comfort (thanks nostalgia), it doesn’t sit with me like it did once. Maybe it’s the age? The author’s controversies? Maybe both idk. But i did find the re read experience a little bit underwhelming, and it’s not the first time i re read them, something changed I guess. And that’s all right!! I still like the saga, and maybe something will change once again in the future. Maybe it’s just the place i am in life and my personal opinions of the author idk. But I realised with this br that I’m not in the mood to re read any more of them rn!! So i’ll be hopping off the next br, sorry!! I just powered through this and finished it cause I compromised and didn’t want to quit ^^||
