Finally halfway, I've been so busy ;-;

#

So apparently in Dune lore the Atreides are extra super proud of their heritage on earth so they still have normal "ancient" names instead of sci fi ones

#

So there's a mix of either archaic or normal names

#

Like Leto or Jessica

#

And that kind of extends to the other characters like Gurney and Duncan

#

But not Yueh and Thufir because they were bred for their jobs by bigger organizations

#

My favorite part so far has definitely been the ||banquet scene with everyone arguing at the table|| (Part I)

austere burrow
# thorn root Like Leto or Jessica

True but Jessica was named that before she came to the Atreides. However, maybe she was named that on purpose to appeal to Leto’s traditional sensibilities?

Honestly, I really enjoyed it and a lot of the characters are really cool. The Fremen seem kind of derivative though, and for most of Paul's time in the novel, he either seemed like a little shit to me or a sort of empty character that I could empathize with but not on any significant level. I feel like in Messiah he might be a little better, or at least I hope so. My favorite characters were definitely Halleck, Duncan Idaho, and Hawat; they were a lot easier to empathize with than Leto, Paul, or Jessica, who seemed pretty emotionless a lot of the time. The story was pretty gucci but it dragged near the middle of the book. ||Showing us the raids on the Harkonnen camps or the outposts outside Arrakeen, or action sequences in Arrakeen, or a sequence of the raid on the Sietch with Alia and Leto, showing us what happened to Rabban, ANY of those would've been awesome and would've added more action and tension instead of the present monotony. The more I think about it, they REALLY did Rabban dirty. I saw that apparently Halleck fights him in the movie, and that would've been actually cool and a good conclusion. Herbert spent the whole ass book hyping up "The Beast Rabban," only for him to DIE AMBIGUOUSLY WITH NO DESCRIPTION AT ALL.|| (Spoilers for the book and minor spoilers for the Dune: Part Two movie)

Starting this today! Just decided to jump on the train because I’m not sure I’d ever get around to reading this series if I’m left to my own devices

#

⏳Nope, first time! I know nothing about the book except that it’s fantasy/sci-fi I think? I’m going in completely blind

🪱 I’m not sure I’d be flying through… I’ve heard of it being kinda dense plus I believe the world building will take me some time to get

lethal sorrel
#

Idk if listening to the audiobook was a good idea for this one omg
I’m like 6 chapters in, really liking ||the way it’s written but the names and world building feels a tiny bit confusing and maybe I’ll just have to wait for it to make more sense? Also, certain words I feel to be taken from certain languages… are they supposed to be like totally new vocabulary or like the original language’s meaning could still imply? ||

austere burrow
#

No the language is borrowed from a lot of other languages, but the main one is Chkobsa. There’s a glossary at the end of most of the books, but if you don’t have one I pinned a couple

#

Back in the olden days, scifi writers were like: nice culture you have there. Sure would be a shame if someone stole it to make their white savior/colonialism universe seem more real.

Nowadays only fantasy writers do that

lethal sorrel
#

Thanks Tink! I’ll check it out
I found a lot of Arabic so far actually so was wondering if the use was intentional and adds meaning or just like ‘sounds cool’ kinda thing

austere burrow
#

I think a bit of both

#

But yeah, he mashes up a lot of cultures, and esp religions

lethal sorrel
#

So far we have ||Paul and fam on the good guys side and the Harrakens (I think) are the bad guys and they’ve some plan on sabotaging and like they’ve got some book kinda something handed over to Paul somehow that might possibly play a role in the sabotaging plan? Post-work brain is a mess so I hope I haven’t gotten it all wrong or something omg ||
I think I’ll get the ebook and check out all pins as well

austere burrow

You’re on the right track

Sure but fair warning this will be the last one, since we already did a two week extension

I've just started Book 2! It definitely takes a while to get used to the world-building but I'm enjoying the classic adventure sort of feel so far. The writing's really nice too! ||I like how well-rounded some of the characters seem to be like Duke Leto and Lady Jessica, the way they're both embodying their roles as parents and also as integral parts of society. Even the presentation of the Duke while drugged and like on the brink of death, his emotional state and everything expressed... Paul's overwhelming emotions to everything he's coming to be, Jessica's response like it's all so quite realistic! ||I do have some annotations up until 40% of the book but I'm not sure if I'd get around to posting them here.

lethal sorrel
#

Typing this out here and Idk how what I’ve written down feels so generic.
I think part of the reason might be that I wrote my thoughts in my journal planning to use the same for my GR review and then like changed my mind while writing or something
 omg

anyhoo, my final thoughts:

||
I really enjoyed the book, though I found it a bit hard to get into at first. It felt like there was no traditional world-building like we're just thrown into this complex world without much explanation and have to figure things out along the way. I ended up not using the glossaries because I kinda got hooked in despite my confusion and things just started falling into place. To me, the plot seemed condensed and simplistic in some ways, but like it didn’t feel that way at all cuz there’s so much happening despite it not being too much? If that makes sense?

I found some parts quite funny, especially with Paul acting all high and mighty like this all too powerful being who’s barely got himself reigned in. But also like that bit where Jessica intentionally passes that comment off to deter him from not being okay with killing a person and other instances like those were amazing. Like I feel like the representation of a mother battling her internal emotions was done so well with her feeling terrible seeing her son kill while also having an understanding of Fremen culture like she understands that Paul’s not in here for anything easy and there’s this moral complexity, and like she worries about the psychological toll this life will take on him and all that and then Paul’s reaction to her comment too like he’s just a kid at the end. Like he could be shitty and arrogant but imagining teens, and the fact that he knows so much and stuff, I get it.

The frequent shifts in POV were interesting and I felt like they gave the story a comprehensive and complete feel. ||

#

||I liked the way most characters were written I should say. Like most felt quite complex... like Gurney for instance the moment when he reunites with Paul, not realizing he’s alive and initially mistrusting him, I feel it all adds a lot of emotional depth to the story.

I didn't expect Paul to get into a political marriage with Princess Irulan, especially after his deep connection with Chani and like them losing a CHILD just a couple chapters before. I mean yes it's a political thing but yeah. Also, Jessica's disapproval of Chani felt very realistically portrayed, adding depth to the story. I liked Alia and really looking forward to seeing more of her in the other books.

I think I also appreciated the exploration of the mother-son relationship like it's not so often where the 'chosen one' has a mother figure to guide or rely on or even exist in the same timeline. Anyhooo, this was a 4 star read for me! ||
