1.1 ||I am once again surprised by the amount of time things take. Interesting start to the story. I find ship life very interesting and would one day like to experience it. I will also probably have issues with keeping the characters names apart. Though maybe I will concult something to keep an overview, since this book is gonna take a while. I hope to finish before my appointent tomorrow.||

1.2 ||Oh god, I hate debt and the stress it brings. I always fear owing someone something. Poor father. I am interested in how the relationship functions.||

1.3 ||The love thing will not end well. Especially Fernands jealousy. I think he is the one to betray Edmond.||

1.4 ||The moment where one unproven accusation can bring you into prison, is the moment we are not in a fair justice system. This is lunacy. Incredibly smart, but still extremely unjust.||

||I'm really enjoying this so far. It's taking me a second to adjust to the writing style, but that is not to say the writing style is bad. I actually really enjoy it. And I think that how clear it is that Edmond is being acted against by those who are jealous is honestly insane. To have everything you could have wanted just... stripped from you due to liars who would rather see your downfall than admit they didn't get something honestly is wild work||

final thoughts time!!

A fantastic read, which honestly surprised me. I think my expectation for larger classics is that they can get a bit wordy just for the sake of it, but there was so much going on that every page was necessary. The plot was dense but rich, with a series of events that were satisfying to follow along. The individual character plotlines, both small and large, were very compelling, and I greatly enjoyed reading those who were in Dantès' good favour such as ||the Morrel family receiving nothing but blessings||

For the most part, the overarching plot was very satisfying and the conclusion felt realistic and aligned with the characters interests as we knew them. I suppose I had my own imaginings of what the end would look like, ||namely in thinking that Dantès would return to Mercédès. I am not super jazzed about him going with Haydée in the end, especially with that modern eye of finding it weird that they used both familial and romantic words to describe their relationship. And it seems sad to me that Mercédès ends the book depressed and alone.||

||I also definitely thought/hoped that it would be revealed that Albert was in fact Dantès' son and that's why Mercédès married Fernand so quickly and why she insisted on Albert becoming very close to the count. And then I thought, since Dantès initially wanted Maximilien to marry Haydée, instead Albert would marry her because Dantès wanted her to be happy with someone he loved, and Albert didn't really have anyone. But no, he also ends up sad and alone.||

All in all, an amazing revenge story. While reading, you are rooting for Dantès to succeed in every way he can, and it's a constant pleasure when he achieves amazing and impossible things. There were also times when things didn't go to plan, or made you wonder if this was truly the right path for even a wronged man to take, and I think that poses excellent questions on morality and justice. ||The loss of Eduard and the extent to which Dantès tormented some of his enemies were horrible and questionable respectively, but the latter being punished I felt was made reasonable by the fact that those men were genuinely The Worst™ to the very end. The psychological torment was definitely intense, especially to Villefort. The death of his entire family as recompense for letting Dantès wither away in prison felt a bit stacked lol||

Very good review the way Dante was || accused of while doing nothing and the way he took revenge so fiercely|| tells you a lot about the sinful earth we live in.

and then getting all his stuff in order like securing his own ship, building space for the treasure, buying out his house, asking for his dad and mercedes first and now we are going to see caderousse !!!!! ||

3.6 ||After a break, I am beginning to understand. I took 2 days off of this book. Interesting mention of the Rothschilds. So there must have been a big timeskip between the book at some point which I did not realize. It makes sense that we do not know a lot of Haydee yet.||

3.7 ||What an excitement about the horses. So much drama around two slightly prettier horses. If my partner would ever sell something that is considered mine, even with a huge profit but without asking, I will riot.||

3.8 ||At this point Dante is just extremely arrogant, it seems like. His attitude is starting to get annoying.||

3.9 ||Poor Haydee, I do not know if this is going to be a romantic relationship, but if it does it is gonna make me feel sick. She calls him her father and he her his daughter. If this turns romantic it seems like grooming. Poor girl needs to get out and make friends.||

   ||I think a rebirth for someone who is normal would be possible. But, I think the person would have to work very hard and be extremely determined.||
2. ||If we want to follow a legal/moral code, maybe not? It seems a bit vigilante, which is often frowned upon. Regardless, everything he did and the amount of time and thought he put in was amazing.||
3. I am planning on reading more by Dumas at some point. Really just when the mood strikes and my current reads aren't bonkers. But, I'd be down for a buddy read if anyone else is!

||I don't know if it was inspiring per se, as frankly I think his was a very unique situation. I think there is something admirable in working hard to fight for your own justice, but I don't think the lengths he took it would be achievable for any normal person. Not without copious amounts of money, anyway lol||

||I don't imagine there was any other path he could take, not so long as he was honouring himself and his past. In his shoes, I wouldn't have done so much, but I am not Edmund Dantès||

Did anyone read the Robin Buss translation / how is it?

Yes, I'm reading the Robin Buss translation currently - it's great, reads very naturally, as if the novel was written in English originally. Very accessible, yet beautifully written prose, very eloquent and suits the classic style. There are lots of references at the back of the book explaining the context (historical, societal, and political), certain terms, and even the choice of words used for the translation. I find it helpful. Having said that, this is the first time I'm reading the novel, so can't compare to any other translations.

O... sounds good. I stupidly read an abridged version without realizing it so maybe will go with the full Robin Buss translation. Oui Oui!

How did you like the abridged version? I'd say that if you want to re-read the story, Robin Buss' translation is a solid way to go - even if you know the story already, you can enjoy the language and dialogue, and maybe additional context.

Don't worry; I am pretty sure the buddy read ended already? I stopped reading it a while ago too because I wanted to focus on shorter books and I got too busy to devote time to reading it. It's ok to not have finished it. You can take your time with it now. It's really a long book to get through.
