1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I'm looking forward to reading this book too!
hello
OMG 😭
This is the first book for mistborn right??? 😭 i read like a hundred pages, but couldn't cuz exams, and have been on my tbr for sooooo longggggggg

yeee
Hey everyone my name is Abby and I will be the BR leader for this BR. I’m excited to read this book with you guys! I am gonna sit down sometime today and go through the book to see how I can break down the reading pace, I will let y’all know the schedule soon! 🙂
Okay so I need everyone to read to the end of Chapter 6 (page 105) by Monday May 8
. I will have discussion questions ready by evening of Sunday May 7. Can’t wait to get into it!
Only just saw this question, gotta start reading quick then!
So I put this book on my Kobo last night with the intention of just downloading the book and then going to bed... and ended up reading until much too late. This is going to be an easy book to read.
Okay i re-read those few chapters, 😭 and bro it's soo good, the writing 🤌 though the world building is really complicated, so it's not a book i can really read at night, cuz i need fulll energy, until i'm familiar with the world 😭 BUT UFFFFFF, i lub this book
sitting* 🤓☝️🏻
Also, can’t join rn.

Ping me in the next book 🙌✨
im so happy to be joining this br! ive always wanted to read this book but it scares me due to how lengthy it is jfkghfkd lets see if i can keep up with this motivation c:
oof i have like 30 pages left to get to 105 !! so far its super interesting!!
Didn't realise this had already started
starting today
I started the other day but haven't had a chance to sit down and read more yet. Hopefully today
I also still have to start! Still busy on the botm
I honeslty have 0 concentration left for anything these past weeks
I hear you, I have been finding it hard to sit down and read. I've been listening to most of my books while working on other projects lately. I am hopeful this book will be the catalyst to get me reading again ☺️
Guys
Please don't let this BR die
We must rebibe
@elfin cedar pls come back online
I started reading today!
I have started this, just haven't gotten a chance to fully sit down and consume it. I am really enjoying it in the first few chapters, loved the prologue
It was a very good prologue.
Hi guys,
since the leader hasn't really been online lately, would anyone like to take over the BR? That would mean pinging participants and asking questions/promoting discussions about the book and sending us a report about the contributors after the BR has ended.
well, if no one else can do it, i volunteer
all righty, i will give you the BR leader role then
Thank you Kai!!
End of Chapter 2: ||I am liking the heist vibe of these two chapters. Kelsier's swagger reminds me of Locke Lamora||
thank u kai!! the book is too good to not comment on the br 😭
hello everyone! i will be your new br leader for the journey into the world of “the final empire”
according to the initial schedule we have the month of may to finish the book and share our thoughts about it. but, because of the change in br leader, i was wondering if you guys feel like you need more time to finish?
@haughty delta @proven zephyr @winter halo @misty saddle @worthy zealot @river violet @frail mason @elfin cedar @ember escarp @sturdy flower @prisma laurel @sinful parrot (also let me know if you’re no longer participating in the br to stop pinging you)
yes! adding a bit more time would be very helpful to finish this book
some initial questions:
🟩 what got you interested in reading “the final empire”?
🟧 have you read anything by brandon sanderson before?
and questions about your thoughts so far:
⬛️ what do you think about the characters, especially about vin and kelsier?
🟪 what do you think about the epigraphs (text at the beginning of each chapter)? who is speaking there?
BR duration: <t:1683072000:D>-<t:1686787200:D>
BR leader: @silent ridge
Link: #buddy-reads message
just let me know until when you want to extend it and i'll change the end date
seeing that a lot of you want to extend the br, let’s now vote to see how long:
1️⃣ 2 weeks (june 15)
2️⃣ 3 weeks (june 22)
3️⃣ 1 month (july 1)
4️⃣ something else
🟩 People from another Discord server have indicated they are good books.
🟧 I have not read anything by Sanderson before.
⬛️ I'm only 5 chapters in, but I find them likeable and mysterious enough to be intriguing.
🟪 I've been wondering this myself. Is it someone in the past? Or the future? Maybe it's the ||Lord Ruler?|| Put in there to make us feel empathy for them? I guess we'll see!
🟩 ohh one of my favorite ever streamers is obsessed with these books, so i wanted to try them out!
🟧 not really; but i hope this book motivates me to read more from him
⬛️ ughhh kelsier is just so charming and i really like his character, || his lore about the whole going to the pits thing and escaping also his wife's story has me really intrigued so i wanna know more about him in general||
🟪 i have the same question!! id like to believe that || maybe its vin's brother, or maybe even the lord ruler ||
I have a pretty chill day. I hope to get through a few hours of this book today.
alright then, we will extend it until june 15
Chapter 2~ || I usually don't like switching povs but Brandon did it well...I'm about to have massive Sanderson bias while reading this, I'll apologise now
But fr it's the tiny details that mean so much like even how Vin calls it "luck" it is so telling already of her character. And this is such an interesting magical concept...even with minerals in water being used...although I need to see more of it in action it's just so
rn. Deciding when I can sit down and binge read a bunch of this is hard, because I really want to just do it, I'll be gradually reading it through the day though. I'm super interested in where it is going after this chapter ||
🟩 ~ I watched through Sandersons writing lectures on youtube and I loved seeing his comparisons of stuff etc. and how he used such techniques in his own books, so that in general sparked the interest in his books (especially the mistborn books). I also saw a couple videos mentioning how complex yet great his work was, so naturally I wanted to read them
🟧 ~ I have not.
⬛️~ I'm not far enough to say just yet, but I am liking Kelsier and his interesting morals let's say.
🟪~ Again not too sure yet, || but After chapter 2 I started thinking the Lord Ruler or the Antagonist of the story.||
So while carrying my Kobo from my kitchen table to my couch yesterday I dropped it and shattered the screen 😭 and my back up ereader is no longer supported by Kobo, so I can't download this book 😖 . I'm going to have to find another copy of this book so I can keep reading.
🟩 I saw it coming back when looking for fantasy novels, and was also recommended by the same colleague who recommended The Name of the Wind to me, which I enjoyed reading!
🟧 No I haven't!
⬛ || Kelsier is so badass, I love this character. I always have a week spot for confident characters, the one smiling while being badass. Vin hadn't shown much of her character so far (ch.4) but I like her also. She's tough and smart. ||
🟪 I don't knowwwwww || it feels old, maybe even before The Final Empire?||
🟩 There was this guy who recommended it a few times, and it sounds really really interesting, the sanderlanche, so can't wait to dive deeper into it
🟧 no, but planning to try to read all his books this summer
Ch6. || I hate the description of the monster in the fog (I don't know what theyre called in English). I was eating breakfast while reading that part and it made me so nauseous. Alle the legs and heads and blueghhh
||
||Mist Wraith is what they are called in English|| What language are you reading in?
huh 😭 the one that made me nauseous was the inquisitors ;-; like their description is frightening
Okay I'm in love with the character Breeeze || i'm where she starts training with him, and uffff his descriptions and the way he teaches>>>>>>>>>||
In Dutch!
Nevelgeest
That's awesome! I'm curious, for names that are English words, do they keep the names the same or do they translate the names? Like Breeze, still Breeze in Dutch or translated to the Dutch word?
Vin and Kelsier are the same! I haven't seen a Breeze though...
Very interesting, thank you!
Chapter 11: ||Well, that got gorey very quickly. I wasn't expecting that explicit brutality from this book||
Ok so it took me a while to realise who Breeze was, because his name is indeed translated! In my book he is called Bries
Now I wonder what other names are translated ..
Definitely Knuppel must be a translation
That would probably be Clubs ||the Smoker. The other crew member's English names are: Dickson, Ham, Marsh, Yeden. Ham is short for Hammond and might not be translated, but maybe Marsh would be?||
Ham, marsch and yeden are not translated! Is Dickson the right hand to Kelsier? Because strangely the right hand is called Dockson, which is barely a translation
Sorry it is Dockson, it was autocorrected to Dickson 😣
Haha that makes more sense!
7~ || I already knew this was going to be a thing before reading this book but this coin pushing thing is actually kind of...genius?? It's such a cool concept and I can only imagine the different ways it can be used in the books. I love this interaction between Kelsier and Vin and the experiments with the different metals, it's so good
||
Enjoying this book so much I want to buy it
8~ || That earring is bound to be used at some point in the future ||
|| What the hell is that mistwraith description
no ty ||
Ch 14. || Nooooooooo ||
Ch 14 ||why did they go into that stupid palace without any plan?!||
Ch17. || I'm almost convinced now that the little stories between the chapters is from the overlords' perspective ||
Right? ||When he opened the door to the Inquisitor I literally jumped. A jump scare in a book 😋 I wasn't expecting it||
Yes same! || I closed the book immediately, I guess the book equivalent of putting your hands over your eyes when watching a scary movie hahaha ||
Oke some of my favorite lines I highlighted while reading yesterday:
- || Elend peered over his book. 'That's a beautiful dress. Almost as beautiful as you. Vin sat with an open mouth for a moment. Elend smiled wickedly, [...] - I love bantery interactionsssss!||
- || 'If Ventra's heir were to be executed, it would certainly contribute to political unrest.' --- OH no Vin (and I) did NOT see that comming! Kelsier is so morally grey, I love and worry for that so much ||
Thoughts on CH20: || 'Was a man capable of relinquishing such power?' PLEASE don't let this be foreshadowing. I love Kelsier I don't want to see him become the Baddy 😦 ||
Thoughts on Ch21: || " That Yeden has changed" -- Oh no this is the second remark on how much Yeden has changed. Has he changed too much? Is he even still Yeden? Is he like the count some sort of zombie (valtra? idk what Kelsier called him at some point)? ||
Passed the half way mark!
I like the book very much at this point. I had a slow start getting to know all the rules of the universe, but that is often with fantasy books like this. I think Vin is very young || Her first interactions at the ball are very school-girl-esque||, but that's balanced out nicely with Kelsier who is ( a little) more mature! || The gore was very unexpected. First, you're reading about Vin who has her little crush at the ball, and in the next chapter, she is almost mauled to death. Can't say I don't like it! Usually, I'm not the biggest fan but here it's nicely balanced.||
|| IT WAS TERRIFYING 😭 bro, " vin, run" will haunt me forever.||
Ch 15. || oky.. 😭 ik kelsier is feeling guilty, that why did he let her go ;-; but UM- eXcUSE me, iT's NOt HIs FaULt. And he should knew, she obviously wouldn't die... she's the main character, and if she's bound to die in the series, which i doubt, it's not going to be in the first book||
Ok but this part frustrated me a bit too || he was like, if I sent her away she would've just followed me. But he could also just have taken her home?? ||
|| BUT SHE would follow him again? he knew that||
ONG THERE'S THIS SCENE
in chapter 18
it's my favorite
Trueee || but it was quite unplanned right, he could have made sure there was someone watching her, he could've gone another day idk
||
|| THAT'S THE THING, HE COULDN'T PLAN. Last time he planned something, he got sent to basic HELL. He wanted no one finding out, and if he did it another day, vin would know so why not take her while he had the chance... but bro 😭 he gave up valuable time to save her, ik he was less injured but still-||
Chapter 25. || i feel bad for vin 😭 flaring that pewter constantly for hours while running and she wanted to rest. I really hope no one chides kelsier because of this, because he's really worried about his men i mean thousands of lives are at stake, and he has a bit more experience then vin, but it's also wearing him out||
Another thing, I'm relatively new to the buddy reads and haven't participated in one consistently, so after the first book of this series Mistborn, will there be a buddy read of the second book?
|| AND WY THE HELL DID THEY MARCH HALF OF THE ARMY ???||
Ch 28. || Omg yes a Elend POV! ||
|| I knowwww this was so frustrating and sad 😭 ||
i-
section 4 started
35 chapter started..
i was warned, that brandon sanderson was cruel
but he couldn't have done that-
don't open unless you want extreme spoilers that will wreck you😭 IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT DON'T YOU DARE 🔪|| WHY THE HECK DID HE DIE, KELSIER WAS LIKE A SECOND MAIN CHARACTER NO NO NO, and barely without a fight?||
Oh no! Why Alengo? Why do you allude to bad things happening?
No, maybe bad things happen
maybe good things
It's a very controversial view
Some people prolly won't find it bad really
I overreact mostly- 😭
This is so difficult for me not to open the spoiler
funny thing, i'm not even reading this book and i knew what that spoiler was lol
don't open it, close discord and keep on reading
... i beg you not to open it
close discord until you finish the book
great advice
no dw I am not going to open it
I do however have my suspicions
I feel like some stuff early on is hinting at me that something big is going to happen
and I really hope it's not what I am thinking will happen
I finished!
I couldnt not open Alengo's spoiler so I had to finish it as quickly as I could
My randomly ordered thoughts upon finishing: || I'm so sad Reed was dead, I really hoped he'd make an appearance. The dead of Kelsier i did NOT expect, but somehow I did see the Marsch becomming an inquisitor happening, but was surprised we first saw him dead. I was very happy he was not corrupted. Im so curious about the effects of the 11th metal and was surprised it didnt really do anything in the end. I wanted to throw my book at the wall when once again they went uprepared for that little mystery room in the palace. At some points the story was reallllllly slow. They are constantly in Luthadel, then back to renoux, then at Clubs place, at a ball and then the cycle repeated. Action sequences were really short but heavy, and then there was a long period of mostly contamplating a lot of things. Vin loving Elend was a little bit out of the blue, I know they had their cute moments but then suddenly LOVE. Alright you do you. I think next book will be about the Depth, but I'm curious who will be taking the huge gap that Kelsier left|| all and all 4 stars!
💅
😭 fr um not what i expected at the end || in the beginning the book was kinda slow, sped up, and then went slow again, but the last two hundred pages were worth it, 😭 wasted my entire sleep last night to complete it. I REPEAT AGAIN. KELSIER DID NOT DESERVE TO DIE, WHY- 😭 and i was kinda expecting marsh's death, not him becoming an inquisitor sOOO. Elend supermacy tho>>>>>||
Re: a BR for the next book. There will only be a BR for the next book if someone offers to host it.
finished part 1 ||im really liking the explanation for how the mist born powers work.
also, i feel sorry for vin whenever she gets overly suspicious of everything. ||
ohhhhhhhhhh

incoming book journal dump
:
chapter 14~ || I am in love with the training vin chapters; this whole mentor relationship that Kelsier and Vin have is so nice...like he is kind of the older brother she never had
||
chapter 16~ || Appreciating the development of Vin - the whole "we're not invincible are we?". For vin who suddenly realised she had this 'amazing' power it makes sense for her to feel invincible and like she can conquer anything, but to lose a battle she can start to realise she is still as vulnerable as she was before and that she still has her limits. It's the bare minimum of character development but I feel like so many books lack these small details that make it so much more immersive ||
chapter 17~ || I LOVE their relationship so much
it's just nice and refreshing and warm and ugh. I'm so upset with all the subtle hints we've been given....I'm not sure this is going to last forever. I'll remember these moments of Kelsier and Vin fondly ||
chapter 21~ || Kelsier's actions are becoming a little troubling... there's going to be big consequences for sure. It's strange because there are slight parallels between him and his enemy...anyone with power becomes too bold with it. ||
chapter 24~ || NO EVERYTHING IS TOO HAPPY RN SOMETHING BIG IS ABOUT TO GO DOWN
||
chapter 26~ || The whole army just like that..
hhh I wonder what they're going to do next. I can imagine them utilizing the mists or mist wraiths in some way but I'm not sure how or if sanderson will go that route. We'll see... ||
I'd also like to say I appreciate sososo much how Vin is written. || I think I've grown tired of seeing women written to be 100% strong with no flaws or just either incredibly girly or tomboyish with no in between. Like it's possible for that to be the case but it's so nice to see Vin exploring who she is and what she enjoys...learning to actually enjoy going to these balls that she was certain she'd hate before. And she is young and it shows but she can still think critically and all. She has such a subtle character for the most part but getting to know her more, I am starting to really love and appreciate her part in this story. ||
chapter 29~ || Vin experiencing her first bad ending in a book
we all know the pain well||
chapter 31 ~ || Elend made me laugh with his assumptions...just no...you're still quite a bit off Elend
I can't wait for him to actually find out what's going on ||
Chapter 32: ||Ah! This is so intense!! Poor Marsh||
@haughty delta @proven zephyr @winter halo @misty saddle @worthy zealot @river violet @frail mason @elfin cedar @ember escarp @sturdy flower @prisma laurel @sinful parrot
just a reminder that we have about two weeks to finish reading!
people who have commented: vaydium, sinaa, alengo, andy.pike, emi
haven’t commented: maybae, planting seeds, bella bee, mous, ayesha, starslayer and pickleaplum
please lmk if you commented and i didn’t notice or if you aren’t part of the br anymore
I will post some more questions when I finish work today
I don't have much more to go. It's getting pretty intense now, I think I'll probably finish it quickly
the final 100 pages I was unable to put the book down
I'm still in this fr
@worthy zealot @elfin cedar @sturdy flower @prisma laurel
you finished?
oh nvm LMAO
ill try to read
Basically
(Still less than 200 pages)
I’m about to start part 2 👀🙈
Aaahhh okay I need to catch up soon 😂
How much have you read Ayesha?💃
havent started
LMFAOO
Thank for letting me know! I'll make sure I have some uninterrupted time for the last bit. I have 300 - 400 eReader pages left.
I thought this same thing!
questions!
-
||what misting power do you wish you had?||
-
||do you think they will succeed in overthrowing the lord ruler?||
-
||would you consider kelsier a good or bad person? or somewhere in between?||
sorry i furnished work and i forgot to post the questions yesterday but they’re here
1 ~ || All of them
GIVE ME ALLLL ||
2~ || I think they'll atleast be able to stop his mistreatment of people if not overthrowing him ||
3~ || A heavy mix between both. I think given power, Kelsier would go to extremes just as the Lord Ruler has except the noblemen will be the ones suffering this time (and kind of already were by his hands). There are so many parallels between them, especially in his justification of murdering noblemen...and we cannot forget the Lord Ruler's journals that showed him to be a relatively normal man at first. It's just the "if you were in the same position, would you really have done it differently?" kind of argument which I think Kelsier to a degree would be stooping to the same levels but justifying it in his way by saving the skaa...it's really not at all too different from what the Lord Ruler had been doing ||
Finally here and... Yes...That was very unexpected. 😲
fr 😭
-
MISTBORN ALL THE WAY. But it would be like steel, or y'know tin to enhance my abilities.
-
spoiler? || they did- or atleat she did... no they anymore ||
-
|| A good person, and it's not just because he died and I felt sorry and sad. He did take his hate to an extreme level and sometimes didn't think things through like killing nobelemen but he cared about the people around them and thus caring about the people they cared about, like he promised not to kill elend, and said something ilke not all noblemen are bad or something like that, and he was willling to do everything no one else had the courage to do for the skaa, and couldn't stand for them getting hurt. He literally died for them and then they managed to open their eyes-||
Finished!
1.||If I had to choose one that would be applicable to real life? I guess a Soother.||
-
||I did think they would, but I expected both the main characters to be alive to do it, and for it to be, you know, the actual Lord Ruler, not some Terrisman with a grudge...||
-
||Well he sacrificed himself for the greater good. But it's the greater good based on his opinions and using some shady means... There was a lot of gray area there.||
I really enjoyed this book. I hope there will be a BR for book 2, cause I'm looking forward to reading it! Thank you for hosting this BR Kai!
-
||If it wasn't mistborn i'd want to have tin! Storng, fast and endurance all the way||
-
||I know they did but it is made very clear the the lord was not the final battle, im really curious what the real threat will be||
-
||HE WAS THE BEST I hate for him to die and I have no clue how they are going to fill the gap. I love mentor-mentee relationships and I dont think Vin has matured enough to take that role completely in the rest of the series ||
I’ll have to pause reading this to focus on my exams 😔 but hopefully I’ll read it on my own later and join y’all when you’re reading the second one 💃
Goodluck on those exams
Thank you
Chapter 34~ || That fight was so good....but damn...it's exactly what I thought would happen
I was putting off reading these chapters cause I knew this was where it was going hhhhh. How far Vin has come though....this one really hit her hard ||
|| I really love how she continues to have these doubts though...it's so nice to see her character still being somewhat faithful to who she was way before all of this...ofc she has grown but none of that erases who she was and what she knew before Kelsier came into her life ||
Chapter 37~ || SAZEEE
I love sazed ||
Chapter 38~ || wow she finally realised it
||
Finished ~ || I really enjoyed this book. Despite some things it had a pretty nice ending
Happy for Vin ||
|| i know right it took her so long hhahaha||
||Do you two mean that the Lord Ruler is Rashek? I didn't realize it before she did. How did you know?||
||that he was a terrisman, i remember screaming THE BRACELETS THE FUCKING BRACELETS, starting the moment she saw a very old man in that weird little chamber||
finished! ||the way that the book ends definitely doesn’t feel like a victory. it’s more like something big changed for them but who knows if it will be worth everything they went through. it’s a shame that kelsier died but i sort of expected it bc of some people’s comments that something awful happened. from that i thought someone could have died and it seemed likely that it would be him.
i think it was an interesting device to put pieces of the journal at the beginning of each chapter. at first you wonder who it could be specially because he mentions things that i had no idea about so when vin finds the book and they find out it’s a journal i figured that must have been the lord’s.
i kinda liked the relationship between vin and elend. the way they met felt like the first genuine interaction that vin had where she could be herself. ironically it happens when she’s pretending to be someone else lol. any way those are my thoughts in general ||
thanks to everyone for participating on the br!
@emi.ri @river violet if you finished reading please share your thoughts on the book
sadly i didnt have time to finish it!! uni has been super tough lately ;; but it has been a fun read and will definitely try to join (and finish) for the next book
Ty kai for taking over the br
Will we be continuing with this? I can request the next book if you guys are up for it
..or if someone else wants to lead?
I want to read the next book and would join a BR, but I'm not up to leading, sorry.
No need to say sorry! I was only asking because I would love to lead but if anyone else did that's okay too
I will put in a request sometime this week if that's the case
@river violet helo prankhar are you able to verify if you finished? Even if you finished a few days after it ended then that's fine, pls let me know
I'm adding up all the points soon
Owh owh sorry mb
I could not finish it

Don't think I'll be able to anytime soon but I'll try!
That's ok! Just wanted to check

Announcement: #buddy-reads message
YOOO
This has been sitting on my shelves for so long... I'll finally read it yesss
Same! I'm going to finish Skyward and maybe the sequel and then tackle Mistborn. Soo many Sanderson books still on my tbr
the same, I want to get in with sanderson books before they get the adaptations
it's crazy that not one book of Sanderson got any adaptations yet.
U read Elantris?
Not yet but it's sitting on my shelves. I know most people recommend that or Warbreaker as the first Sanderson novel in the Cosmere but I'm just going to read everything chaotically
@subtle pilot,@bronze mica,@hardy sierra,@misty saddle,@obtuse wadi,@wild shadow,@broken oak,@pine plinth,@azure talon,@placid falcon,@rustic perch,@sinful holly,@river violet,@proven zephyr
HEYOOOO
Sorry for the very late announcement but today is the first day of our BR.
Here are some questions to kick of our discussion.
- Why did you join on this BR?
- Are you planning to read the whole series?
- Is this your first Sanderson book to read?
- When are you planning to start to read?
Remember
To put in what page or or percent you are in the book and don't forget to put spoilers.
- Final Empire's been sitting on my shelf for a while
I can finally read it - Ye, eventually
- I've read bits of this and bits of Elantris
- After tomorrow

- The Final Empire has been sitting on my shelves for years but I've finally started reading Sanderson last year and am now eager to tackle everything he's written.
- Yes but probably not in one go.
- No. I've finished three, DNF'd one and am currently reading my fourth one.
- Likely in July because I want to finish the Skyward series first.
Which one did you DNF
Frugal Wizard. I just could not get into the way the story was told and I unfortunately didn't like the MC :/
It's weird because I've seen people say that if you liked Tress you'd also like Frugal Wizard but nope. Not me
- I needed the motivation.
- I'm planning to read Era 1.
- This is my first Sanderson.
- In July
I'm starting in July!
- I've been wanting to read this for a long time
- probably
- nope. But everything else has been for a younger audience
- hmmm. probably in July?
just follow the thread, it won't go anywhere after that
mostly all of them will start reading in july
@subtle pilot,@bronze mica,@hardy sierra,@misty saddle,@obtuse wadi,@wild shadow,@broken oak,@pine plinth,@azure talon,@placid falcon,@sinful holly,@river violet,@proven zephyr
HEYOOO
Just a little reminder that this BR still exist hehe.
Since most of us plan to read this book in july
I nearly forgot about this because it wasn’t showing up in my channel/threads list
Hi @subtle pilot sorry the ping.
I really want to read this series, and I think I can start it in a week or so, but I’m definitely not going to get it finished by aug 1 with other BR deadlines too. Are you open to extensions at all?
I picked up The Final Empire again after putting it on pause for a couple months. Finished Part 1 and I'm eager to see where this goes. There's build-up for something epic to happen and I hope it's rewarding. Kelsier is my favourite character so far. Straightforward magic system leaves me wondering how complicated it may become when danger is mixed in.
Would it be possible to get a one or two week extension for it? I‘ll try to get started next week but I won‘t be able to finish in time for August 1st
Finished Part 2 and I have to say, Sazed grew on me and he is now my favourite character. Why do I have this premonition that he'll die? I have no clue where this is going except for the fact that something will go wrong or there'll be a sacrifice in their plan to kill the Lord Ruler.
Finished Part 3. I'm iffy on the relationship between Vin and Elend. I can't help but think Vin's weakness is ||falling for Elend. Yeden was incredibly foolish. I wonder how Kelsier will recover his plans.|| I WANT THE LORD RULER TO MAKE AN APPEARANCE
I’d still like to read this if an extension is possible! It would be a re read for me, but I’d like to join!!
Finished Part 4. Kelsier ||died in a honorable fashion.|| Elend searching for Vin was cringe; the way he just ||barged in amidst the fighting wasn't it.|| Lord Ruler finally appeared despite being ||dreadful and indifferent.||
Finished!
My review: (3.75 out of 5, Good)
Simple prose flows nicely yet can be redundant. Clichés are sharply placed with impactful outcomes. Unpredictably high tensions. Rich and complex world. Compelling characters. Intriguing and expertly-forshadowed plot. Imperfect pacing, standard dialogue, and shallow exploration of characters' feelings. Pushes suspenseful and captivating curiousity. Recommended for those attracted to thrilling fantasy that contains mystery elements.

hey y'all, your BR Leader has been MIA for a handful of weeks now, I'm sorry there were no follow-up broadcasts for you all! I tried to reach out to the leader a few days ago, but have not had a response yet.
The BR has ended a few days ago, but to compensate, are any of you interested in any of the following:
- an extension of some duration, chosen by all of you. I will note down the participants and assign points at the end OR someone can take over as leader for the extension duration
- re-doing the BR with a new timeline and new BR Leader (some of you can think of this as an extension)
- leaving this BR behind and I will note participants and assign points myself. No extension.
I will go with option 3 if nobody says anything
I would like to read rhis book but I have yet to get it from my libary. Option 1 or 2 would be ideal for me
Option 1 would work for me!
Option 2 I like
Until when would you all like an extension or new BR?
Option 1 or 2 would work for me as well. If we could get an extension until the end of the month that would be perfect
I will get it in 2-3 weeks so for me untill mid Sept-end Sept
That would work for me too
Until the end of September would be great!
Sounds good, I can extend the BR til end of Sept. Does anyone want to be the leader or should I proxy lead?
Since it's the first book, I'll set up another BR announcement with the new date in mind in case other people want to join in
I can lead it if noone else wants to
Okay! You're a good leader
Will you make a new thead or should we keep going in this one? Just since you sai you make a new BR announcmnet so that confused me a bit
It will be in here, you can start today if you wanted to! I'll just have to make some updates in Gregg later
Could you pls add the BR leader role to me? I can not use Greg without
Sorry! Yes I did it now

Hello people
So I am taking over this br in the lack of the current leade being gone.
As for right now I have Shar as curently reading.
The rest of us have yet to start this book if I am not mistaken. As for right now we have untill 30th September for this buddy read. I am always open to extesions if somone where to need it.
Just some general questions to hopefully get this started again:
- When are we starting this book? (for those who have yet to start)
- What caracther do you currently relate to the most?
- Has the opinions or expectations from this book changed since you first started it?
Personally I am starting this hopefully in 2/3 weeks. Which is when my loan is done.
Gregg is sentient now
- Starting this month for sure
- I did read some many months ago but not enough, so can't really say
- Ye... When I first started I was expecting a fast paced but lore heavy action adventure fantasy... Which it is, but the action left me kinda disappointed
- Finished reading The Final Empire but I look forward to responding to everyone's thoughts.
- I find Sazed to be relatable because of his dedication towards knowledge and his willingness to follow what is true to him.
- I was in a reading slump when I first started The Final Empire and didn't find the beginning to be as engaging as the rest of the book. At first I thought it would be an average book but then it turned into a good book as I kept reading.
Did you share your final thoughts? May be me that just didnt see them
July 26 2024, I shared my final thoughts. I can resend it if it's not showing up!
It's right after a message from Katie
Oh I see it. My apologies
No worries! 😄

BR has been fully updated with the new dates and leader. Ignore that Apostle is labeled as the old leader. We will take into account that Avi is new leader. Best of luck with the remainder of this buddy read! 🫡
Thanks spicy!
I'm hoping to get to this series after #1255063736725540920
- I don't have a timeframe set yet but I've placed a hold on the book and it's going to be a while for sure

I haven't started yet so I'll get to the other questions when I do 💜
I rejoined- will be reading this in September I think
Welcome back
I’ll be reading it in September after Way of Kings as well
I think I skipped this BR during the first announcement, but I’ve joined on the re-start. Idk when I’ll try to start, but I’ll try to make it before the end
Hi! Just joined. On page 250 of Final Empire.

hahah oh sorry. Yes will do!
Its really fun. This is my first Brandon S. book. I see why people really love this author
Reached the halfway mark last night. Wow Brandon Sanderson is REALLY good at world building and magic systems ( I bet everyone is like DUH, but im new to his books). I was missing out. Very good so far!
Only ish 1 week left to wait!!!!
I actually happened to have put this in my September TBR
Ooo. Join us
If I get through my August TBR early I'll probably go ahead and start it sooner
I’m not starting this one soon, just want y’all to know that I stopped by my beloved used bookstore on a whim and found a box set of Mistborn+Elantris
Omg lucky

There will not be any new questions as there has not been anyone new reading much since I last pinged. I know most of us are planning to read it in September. So will just leave this as a small reminder that this exist
Will be starting this one today
Yay
STARTING IT THIS MONTH
Ch 2 ||Kelsier pretty cocky but seems to have the skills to back it up. It's interesting that Vin can use powers despite seeming to not know or understand it.||
Ch 4 ||oh sure a simple plan to
*checks notes
Overthrow the Empire||
Ch 5 ||I'm really liking the fight scene Sanderson paints. He's also such a nerd, he he really put some thought in how the magic works. I've read Elantris recently but the magic and fighting were only touched upon. Ok, well the magic may have been developed/explained but you barely see it being used.||
Thought/theory on Vin ||Concerning how she was able to use her power without knowing about it, I wonder if she was able to use it by essentially wishing that her brother would calm down when he would beat her.||
Actually Officially Starting this one today, as my Backpack Book.
the acknowledgement that’s just “thanks for teaching me about how women work” was not what i expected to see
Ch 8 ||Enjoying the master/apprentice relationship going on between Kelsier and Vin.||
Are the blurbs before each chapter supposed to be from the lord ruler before his ascension?
Ch 10 ||”Kelsier’s ability to hush a room of hungry men by doing nothing more than standing before them. … yet even with her copper on, she felt a … presence from him.” Kelsier gots that aura fr fr.||
Ch 12 ||Is Elend going to be not like other nobles, or will he be a charming a hole that that doesn’t reveal that he’s and a hole until Vin is in a situation where it can’t inflict maximum emotional damage.||
Prologue- ||shoutout to the coppermind wiki for explaining what ‘burned tin’ meant||
Chapter 1- ||I feel like white clothing should be the ultimate sign of wealth in this world, much like the real world pre-washing machine. Like, I get that fabric (esp cotton) is just naturally white so it’s probably cheaper as just an undyed fabric, but still.
Also, Vin bestie, I think Laird knows what you’re doing||
Chapter 5- ||Kelsier 🤝 Edmond Dantès||
||I feel like either Kelsier or Marsh changed their name at one point, otherwise it’s kinda “your parents named you after things they love. Your mom named you after her grandfather and your dad really likes swampland”.||
I am…amused this actually got somewhat addressed

Hey, I am back again with another update. I hope this read is gong great for those of you who are reading. I myself had to DNF this book. I hope everyone else are enjoying it more than what I am.
I will still be your leader and reading all of your comments in the last week+ of this buddy read. Now to some questions to get some disussion ongoing:
-
Do you have a favorite page? If so what is it?
-
Waht is the inportance of the titel of the book?
-
Were there any plot twists that you loved? Mayeb even hated? Tell me about the twists.
-
What would you say the main themes of this book is?
Currently I have: La_2666, ctrl-altmer-del, cgee3, I.found.archimboldi for reading
For finnished I have: Shar
Ch 14 ||Im glad that the are actually something to be feared. I know Kelsier even told Vin that one would be difficult for him to handle, Sanderson did a good job of making me think Kelsier could do it. I know the situation isn’t a 1v1 but now it’s like, how does he plan to take the town when he can’t take on multiple inquisitors, let alone the lord ruler.||
Ch 22 ||Oh hell no I wouldn't go down into those caves. Like a normal cave opening maybe but not cracks in the ground.||
I finished, 4.5/5 I really enjoyed the world building and the laid out magic system which is of course what usually gets praised and for good reason. I do also enjoy magic that isn't explained or have any system but I really appreciate it when it does and really thinks about those "but what if" situations that come with them. The characters were great too. I thought some of the best parts were when the crew were just bantering with each other.
||I think my favorite part was when Vin was fighting the inquisitors towards the end and threw the pewter(?) dust in the air at one to confuse him. I thought that was really smart. Also, I can't help but imagine the inquisitors kind of looking like The Mouth of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings, at least the smile part.
Really the only minus for me, and this is more of a preference, is that it kinda leans into the "chosen one" archetype which I'm not too big on anymore. Well, it does and it doesn't. I'd rather a person just rise up to action rather than following some destiny/prophecy. And I don't want to totally discredit Vin, she's definitely put work into developing her powers, but she's also just naturally powerful. I guess she does rise up to the occasion, especially after Kelsier dies, but there's still that backdrop of the hero of time. Of course I could be wrong and the rest of the series might disassemble the whole hero of time prophecy.
I'm wondering if the lord ruler was able to completely delay the deepness as long as he was alive or if he only slowed it down, which would help explain the world being the way it is today with ash fall. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Just had a sad thought, Kelsier died thinking his brother was dead. I know Marsh's "death" is the catalyst for the end events to really start happening but it's still sad. Also was the atrium used to somehow stop or slow down the deepness which would explain why there were no reserves at the palace?||
Chapter? The last one in part 2- ||I very much appreciate how Sanderson didn't make Kelsier the 'most powerful Mistborn' and he can very much almost die. It was also very convenient for Sazed to be there and catch Vin. Almost too convenient...||
ch 14, had the same kind of feeling.
||Mayhaps the little blurbs at the start of every chapter is being translated from the book Vin took/Sazed recovered? We know it's the Lord Ruler talking||
yep
Chp 18- ||Claiming Elend Venture is “a friend of the family” and “has been like an older brother” seems like a ploy with long-term consequences other than Lady Shan’s attention.||
This getting addressed in chapter 20 has bumped this to a five-star read for me
I should be able to finish today
Squeaking in at the last minute, I JUST finished
||I genuinely did not expect that the Lord Ruler was Rashek and the ‘hero of ages’ had died. Kelsier dying was something I kinda did expect, because a martyr is always the more powerful tool and never sharing the plan was always suspicious. I didn’t think that Marsh had died, but I didn’t think he’d been made an Inquisitor.
I bet my remaining questions (what’s with all the ash if the darkness was really defeated? Did Rashek maybe throw the Hero into the darkness and it’s just a neverending battle like the Prelude of Way of Kings?) are answered in the next two books, but unfortunately I have like eight BRs due in November so the rest of the Mistborn trilogy is gonna have to wait.
I genuinely liked this one. When I was able to sit down and read, it felt like I blinked and I had read another 50 pages. Initially I’d be hovering around giving it a 4.5-4.75 but the small details I thought of getting an in-universe explanation bumped it to 5 stars.
While I don’t think Spook having a thing for Vin was necessary (at least in this book), I did appreciate how it was handled and that it got the bare minimum of words required, and that what we saw of Vin and Elend had (what felt like) him doing more pining, which was a nice change.||

I have Shar and, ctrl-altmer-del for finnished. I could not find anyone else that finnished the book. Please let me know if I missed somone. Will send in final report soon
cgee3 finished, his comments are right above mine
Ohs, they posted chaoter updates after finnished so that confused me. Thank you
I wish I could have read this with you all but my hold's still a couple weeks away
I'll come back here to check the comments whenever I get to it
I sadly couldn't fit it in while also reading Way of Kings.
I sadly couldn't
fit it in while also
reading Way of Kings.
Same for me.. Sorry 😩
Just finished it
I'm too late ofc but damn I loved it
Time to go through the discussions
4/5 for me
The story was INCREDIBLY engaging, I was hooked and binging hundreds of pages like I've never binge-read anything else. Vin's character growth was beautifully written, as was her romance with Elend. Kelsier was awesome throughout. Worldbuilding was the best I've ever seen yet, and the way the revolution worked out made perfect sense.
SPOILERS:
- ||I was hoping there'd be more cross-interactions between the crew, that would develop those characters more. A chapter dedicated to Kelsier and Dockson, Breeze and Ham, Clubs and Vin etc. going on a mission or getting into trouble would've been awesome. Now that the crew dynamic won't exist, it's sad we didn't get a scene like that.||
- ||Kelsier's death was so jarring and caught me completely off-guard. It was beautiful, but damn... Took some time to register he's gone||
- ||I predicted Marsh's return, but I didn't predict the Lord Ruler twist omagad
|| - My BIGGEST gripe with this book was that ||near the end, so many things happened without much precedent. Without any explanation (yet), they feel like conveniences. For example, the eleventh metal conveniently showing Lord Ruler's past, revealing him as a Terrisman and Feruchemist. Vin 'somehow' being able to draw power from the mists. In spite of the several setbacks and even Kelsier dying, these conveniences stand out to me. The explanation being in book 2 and 3 is fine, but that it isn't in this book feels like he came up with conveniences first and explained them afterward, which kinda dulls my enjoyment of the finale. Also, most of what the crew actually did throughout the book and especially in the finale happened off-screen, which was disappointing. Before the book ended, I was hoping more for a scene with them than with Elend.||
Hi, I’m kinda new to this server and was wandering what, if anything, would happen if I started reading this book now 🙃
If you want points, then I suggest requesting a BR for The Final Empire. You can do that through #br-requests
I think you're good to put your thoughts here if you'd like but like Shar said, if you won't get any Buddy Read points for it since there's no active BR for it at the moment.

Hello everyone!
Welcome to this BR, we are so excited to read Mistborn together with you! Mistborn is often considered as the best series to start with when diving into the epic fantasy world of Brandon Sanderson, also known as the Cosmere. :sparkles:
This BR will last from 1 March 2026 to 1 May 2026
Goodreads and Storygraph book link
Content warnings:
Graphic: || Violence, Slavery, Death ||
Moderate: || Physical abuse, Torture, Child abuse ||
Minor: || Rape, Sexual assault, Death of parent ||
Whether this is your first time reading his work, or whether you are already a fan, let’s be mindful of each other and make sure to properly spoiler tag potential spoilers we may share as this is such a plot and lore sensitive universe! You can spoiler tag something by writing “||” before and after the text you would like to have a spoiler tag! :four_leaf_clover:
As this BR kicks off today, we would love to discuss the following questions with you before beginning this book:
- Is this a new read or a reread for you?
- Have you read any other books by Brandon Sanderson?
- When are you planning to read this book?
- Based on the title "Mistborn", what role do you expect ‘mist’ will play in the book?
Happy reading! :books:
so excited to read this!!
- This is a new read for me!
- The only other books I have read are the Stormlight Archives books which are recommended to be read after Mistborn actually, so I'm curious to see how that turns out.

- I will read it (and hopefully finish it also) in March~
- Hmm well seeing how the title "the Stormlight Archives" referred partially to || a source of power (stormlight) || I would say it could mean the same thing in this book. Alternatively, it could be taken quite literally and be about people that were born in/from the mist?

- It is a new read for me
- No, i haven't
- I'll try to read it from tomorrow on until the end on the train
- I actually have mo clue. I can't really remember what goodreads had as a description so i'll just let me enjoy the surprise when it comes

- New read
- I joined this because I had read tress of the emerald sea last month and enjoyed it. But I had since picked up Yumi and the nightmare painter, read it to the half point and paused it as I did not enjoy that one at all. I disliked the main characters and there was no real plot besides them yet. So basically I intend this book to function as a compass to see if Yumi was just a bad pick, or if I don't enjoy the author as much tress would have let me believe.
- Maybe next week, this one I have other books planned
- I go into all books as blind as possible, including no speculations.
- this is a reread for me!
- yes I have! ive read the whole of the mistborn trilogy, none of the newer books past hero of ages though
- im not sure tbh
i might start it in the next month or two though i think
- I know so ill just skip this one

- A new read for me.
- No, this will be my first Brandon Sanderson book.
- I’m hoping to start it in the later half of March.
- Honestly, no idea. I’m just going to dive in blindly.
- Its a new read !
- I've only read Steelheart so far, which I'm aware is very different then the Mistborn series, so I'm interested to see some of Sanderson's more fantasy-heavy books !!
- I might start it in Mid-Late March tbh, and maybe finish it early April !
- no clue tbh, and I think I'd probably prefer to find out as I read
- Reread. I was part of the last BR for this book
- Yes. As I’m typing this, I’m listening to Wind & Truth. I’ve also read Elantris and Warbreaker.
- April, probably.
- ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
- it's my first time reading
- nope, going in completely blind
- sometime in march i think
- uh maybe it focuses on people from a misty place thus the name 'mistborn' or maybe the magic system (if there is one, i have no clue actually) has mist elements
I love that majority of us have 0 clue what the mist might mean
what if it's face mist
- new read, but I've been wanting to read it for a while now
- yes, but they've been for middle grade
- April
- hmmmm. idk some sort of mystery around the mc's heritage or family legacy? or maybe a magical effect due to their birth situation?
- This is a brand new read for me

- YES I did ALL the Stormlight Archive books so far
also read Elantris! - Hopefully sometime between end of March and end of April!
- I have some knowledge about this one... but I've purposefully tried to keep myself in the dark as much as possible, so honestly no idea besides uhhh it's set somewhere misty?
Prologue || Well, I didn’t read what Mistborn was about beforehand. But I didn’t expect it to start like this LOL. Kelsier kind of reminds me of Robin Hood! ||
Ch 3 || Omg I love this book already
I didn’t expect Kelsier to play such a prominent part in it already (although I don’t know if it will stay that way). He seems to be really powerful, but also quite interesting personality-wise. It makes sense he’d want to ‘have’ someone else with powers, but I wonder what he will use her for.
I didn’t expect to already get so much explained. It’s actually quite clear already what Mistings are and what a Mistborn is. I guess I’m still not really certain about the extent of their powers, though. ||
i'm hoping i can fully read this with my current planned reads for march and april 😂
- this is a new read for me
- I've only read Tress of the Emerald Sea
- Hopefully soon given how long it is
- from the limited knowledge of Tress and my friend, maybe it's type of power/magic system?
- This is a new read for me! I've been meaning to read this for a while and now's the perfect time lol
- Nope!
- In a week or two when I finish listening to Magpie Murders

- Aren't the main characters ||thieves/criminals||? I kinda figured Mistborn referred to ||how good they are as criminals||, but I could also see it referring to some sort of magic system
Ch 5 || Reading extensively about Kelsier traveling/‘flying’ about teaches the reader a lot about the extent of Allomancy and Mistborn. I already feel like there are pretty clear reasons and boundaries to this power, and it was explained very straightforward. || comparison to the Stormlight Archives (spoiler free): || This is quite a contrast with Stormlight Archives where sometimes I’m still not entirely sure what is going on with people’s powers but I just accept they can do it LOL ||
Normal thoughts continued || “As far as Kelsier was concerned, any man who upheld the Final Empire also forfeited his right to live.” Daaaaamn he means business ||
prologue
I am so glad that || Tersting isn't the main hero lol. I legit was thinking why such a hard name for the mc than it clicked|| Regarding the question from the start I have now an assumption what the title might meanbut still not sure what the Mist itself is. || I assume that the mc (forgot his name
) is born in the mist or has it's magical powers so had prolly some nickname like mistborn, etc. Which makes him be able to disappear in daylight since it's only visible during nighttime.||
Ch 6 || “Yeden’s bad attitude”
he is so unserious ||
you’re so real for that (regarding your first comment)
Ch 7 || Well from Kelsier’s POV it does seem like he genuinely wants to help Vin. I like how Vin is a bit cautious though. Vin sneaking back and Kelsier finding out was such a wholesome interaction
She got her Mistborn cloak!! 🥹
“That nail attacked me!” HAHAHAHA I love Vin, silly anxious girl has to give it a try (understandably). I love how Kelsier blames himself for not assuming she would try it out rather than Vin. ||
Ch 1 || Someone please tell me i misread and the fmc isn't 16 years old while the mmc is over 25||
Ch 8 || I feel like the narrative that Vin “doesn’t know anything” does the book well since it gives Kelsier the opportunity to explain everything from scratch. That way it’s easy to follow as a reader what is going on from the start and you sort of learn along together with her.
HAHAHA I didn’t realise Sazed was joking putting two steps forward until the book read he smiled. That’s silly.
“Walking with his characteristically lively step” why did this make me think of the jolly Sims walk
The more I hear about Vin’s brother and the way she sees the people around her, the more I suspect him not to have been a very good guy. I genuinely would not wish any further unhappiness to Vin
At first I thought the ending of this part was really wholesome. But now I wonder if it’s a foreshadowing to perhaps a less good version of Kelsier?
||
Ch 9 || “First we’ll have to persuade her not to scowl so often, Master Kelsier”
from the first moment onwards the interactions between Sazed and Vin have been peak.
Well I almost feel bad for saying a less good version about Kelsier might be coming up. He genuinely does seem like such a nice guy. ||
Ch 10 || “Ah, I’d almost forgotten what a fascinating conversationalist you are” this book is so funny what ||
Ch 3
|| I feel like i miss interpreted the whole book so wrong from the beginning
but I must say it's a likeable book. Though, I am surprised we got to know who a Mistborn is from an early start which makes me really curious what will happen in the next 200+ pages lol. I hope Kelsier doesn't break Vin as her brother did like c'mon she is still a child, don't use her for your own good without giving her any credits.||
(Just placed a bid for 2 very well-loved, very second-hand copies of books #1 and #2
)
I started reading (chapter 1) but could some please spoiler me on something? Is there gonna be a romance in this?
I saw we had a few people who are rereading this book. Perhaps they could help you with your question?
I can help w that!!! ||in this one, no. book 2 is where theres a romance side plot thats interlinked w the actual plot but in book 1 there isnt anythin||
It's just a side thing then, even in book 2? Or is it like Yumi and the nightmare painter ||where it's pretty front and center ||(dunno if you read that but it was the last book by the author I read)
I havent read that one (though it on my tbr), it is ||kind of? front n center? its hard to describe w out fully sayin the plot HAHA but its like... the romance itself if there but its relavent to what theyre tryna do at the time? if youre only on chapter 1 you wont know the characters involved but one of them isnt introduced until book 2. || if youre ok w very mild plot spoilers I can say the scenario for the romance happenin because its like. || front n center on one povs but its like... linked to the plot itself? rather than bein a seperate plot|| if that makes sense!
I sorta understand, thank you for explaining, I appreciate it a lot!
And sorry for not spoiler tagging before the edit, I didn't think about it because I personally don't consider stuff like that spoiler, but after posting I realized someone else might, so my apologies
no worries!!! if you have any more questions about it youre more than welcome to ping me, this is one of my fave series so I remember a lot n am more than happy to help
Ohhh that makes me even more excited
Is there any particular reason that made you want to reread it?
Ch 12 || So exciting to read about Valette’s first appearance! Much anticipated in the chapters before. I quite liked the comparison of ‘hiding behind a mask’ and therefore feeling more comfortable acting as someone else.
I’m such a sucker for balls etc. like in Bridgerton and Pride and Prejudice. Such a pleasant surprise that it’s a part of this book too haha.
NAHH IS SAZED GONNA TEACH VIN HOW TO DANCE?
OMG HAHAHA this is getting intense, Vin can be so clever and silly. I loved her dialogue with Elend. I’m kind of afraid Elend is just posing as someone to get Vin’s attention, but going to a hiding spot to read has such Eloise vibes and I’m all here for it.
No way he’s a Venture
this chapter was amazing, I loved it so much! Kind of rooting for more Elend content
||
Ch5: i am so confused on what is going on with the maximal parts lol. I am not really a fantasy Reader so i was just reading and trying to find out what happened in the || Kelsiers' scene where he got autium from Venture. I could so not make out whether he was flying, upside down or just walking
||
|| also, i am kinda scared on what Kelsiers' actual Motive is for wanting the nobels to be destroyed. Since i don't believe it's just revenge for his dead wife. Plus, i hope we get to know the whole Story of him being in the pits and becoming a mistborn. || i have an assumption regarding Vin's background but i will keep it for me for now since the Story hasn't even started yet
I feel you with the first part you said. Just accept what is going on
i am like this through those scenes.
As for the last part I love Kelsier's character as in the way he talks and stuff
Peak comedy imo
It’s so much funnier than I expected it to be haha
|| I would love to learn more about him in the pits!! I really hope they dive into it. But I would assume so ||
Ch 14 || Some part of me would say “why did Kelsier ever agree to let Vin join him” but then again, the stubbornness of a 16 year old… better to at least have her near you than let her sneak around. Still, it feels a bit odd for him to invade that room of the Lord Ruler so ‘impulsively’ while last time that was where he got betrayed? Or perhaps he had a deeper thought behind it. ||
Prologue: ||This is pretty interesting so far! Kelsier sounds pretty cool haha.||
Ch 2: ||Huh, so it seems allomancy does involve swallowing metals and burning them in the stomach to use magic. That's pretty cool and unique. Wonder what else it can do besides sharpening senses and bending wills.||
Me, who is already 6 chaoters in didn't catch that. Thanks for explainig it lol
Ch 16 || So Reen beat her huh… what a great brother…
More background on Sazed!! It seems he had (and still has) a lot to endure as a Keeper ||
That's too bad to hear
What makes it so that you feel like you can't get into it?
I feel like there are too many cruel things happening to characters. I can work through it when I read for education, but when I read for fun I don't think I can deal with it atm
Eg it took me 3 tries to even finish 1984 because it was so cruel
I could do it if it was like a horror book or something, or comedy because then it would get offset but if it's just regular suffering it's too much for me atm
Maybe I'll give the third chapter a chance in a few days when I'm in a better mood
That makes total sense!! Don't feel forced to read something that isn't good for you right now
The BR will still be on for a while, so you can always see if it's something you want to get back into in for example a month!
But if not, then that's also perfectly fine of course
Ch 17 || I actually thought the pre-chapter text was from Kelsier’s pov. But after the reveal of the Lord Ruler’s notebook I wonder if it’s actually the Lord Ruler’s.
Aww.. We get a peak into Kelsier’s true intention: bringing about the world Mare wanted to see and experience. I still wonder what lengths he would be prepared to go to achieve this.
Their conversation on him not wanting children and regretting it really touched me. Especially the part where he describes the way his daughter would look (and it looking like Vin) and her being similar to Kelsier and Mare’s personality.
||
omg so sorry i missed this!!! its mainly just because its been a while honestly
i read this one for the first time about 2 years ago now, n finished the series about a year n a half ago, so i really missed it n just wanted to go back in again!!!
No worries!! That’s really good to hear
I can imagine it’s fun to revisit it after finishing the whole series too!
im really lookin forward to it!!! i cant wait to see if theres any foreshadowin for future events in book one
I'm trying to decide if I start this now or not (my libby hold came in and i'm still waiting for the audiobook). I have a couple other books I want to finish first because i think this is the longest one in my current/upcoming reads list
Ch 18 || HAHA no way Elend just walks up with a stack of books, sits down and starts reading like that
Vin is handling herself so well at these balls now, I really enjoy reading about them!
I wonder if Elend suspects Vin in some way and wanted to show her he doesn’t agree with the way things are going in the Final Empire. Or, if he is just baiting her / their crew. He does seem a bit too obvious about it ||
I decided to revisit some of the pages I’ve already read to start tabbing along my favorite moments so far
Ch 19 + The Way of Kings spoilers || OMFG HOID MENTIONED
it feels so funny seeing him pose as a Skaa while knowing who he is
||
Just Mistborn ch 19 comments again: || So smart of Kelsier to check with informants what is known of house Renoux! That way he can see what information is on the streets and whether they are suspicious of the operation.
“Lord Elend spoke very highly of the girl to his friends” OKAY I LIKE IT
“First name, Kelsier thought with disapproval. She is falling for the boy” Daddy Kelsier does not approve
||
Ch 21 || Okay so the pre-chapter text is from the Lord Ruler’s logbook. Vin’s previous thoughts on Kelsier wanting to take the power as well as the rumours on the Lord Ruler before he Ascended makes him sound kind of similar to Kelsier. I wonder if… || theorising about the story: || he will actually become the new Lord Ruler. ||
Ch 21 continued || Anyways, Kelsier lying like that to the army wasn’t cool, but I can see why he thought it necessary. The ending of this chapter makes it sound like there is more behind his actions, but at the moment I wouldn’t know what lol ||
Ch 22 || I expected the handkerchief to be something like that
Ahh.. Vin’s conversation with Dockson perfectly shows how young and naive she still is. It partially surprises me how much she has turned after posing as Valette. I feel like the ‘old’ Vin would have agreed with Dockson. I suspect Elend is the first person she has had a crush on, so it would make sense she is sort of head over heels blinded by him and nobility ||
Just started this today! I'm starting with the audiobook which probably isn't the best way to start but it's noisy at work so I figured I'd start now
Yippee! Enjoy!
Ch 23 || THE HANDKERCHIEF STUFF IS SO FRICKING CUTE I’M EATING THIS UP

To be honest I’m still super conflicted if Elend will be helpful or if Kelsier is right. I don’t want to disregard Vin’s young senses and naive behavior, but Kelsier also has (logically) a lot of prejudices. ||
Ch 25 || Well, at least Yeden also fucked up his own mission
||
Ch 5: ||I'm loving all these details on how allomancy works, and I love how Sanderson wove those details into the action of Kelsier's heist. Allomancy is such a cool magic system.||
I am realizing that I completely missed everything that happened in ch 1 but I'm already on ch 3
Thoughts so far upto beginning of ch 3: ||interesting, but confusing. Probably best I didn't start as an audiobook. I had to read a reddit summary of the chapters to better understand. Is there a difference between Misting and Mistborn then? Are Skaas actually a different race or is it just a caste system? I have mixed feelings on Vin so far. ||
|| The questions you mentioned, are they things you are still wondering as you are reading, or would you like me to answer them since you didn’t catch everything? ||
Yes please! I'm still on ch 3 and ||they're kind of answered, but I still don't quite understand 😅||
||is allomancy the general magic system that Kelsior and Vin use? I thought it was the control of metals when Kelsior drank the vial??? But it also worked for Vin for "emotional allomancy"?? Although they started that she can control 2 so she can probably control all and is there for "Mistborn". So is Mistborn controlling all 8 and Misting controlling just 1?? Does this magic only affect controlling people's emotions???? Sorry for the lots of questions 😅||
finally got a chance to pick up the book !
|| Yes! Allomancy is the general magic system that they use. Essentially it entails drinking a type of metal and then burning it. People who are able to use 1 metal, are Mistings. There are also people who can use all metals, they are Mistborn. Since Vin can use two, Kelsier therefore assumes she is a Mistborn.
They will still explore the lengths of Allomancy more later, so for now I will just say it can have a varying effect depending on the metal you burn. Emotional, but also physical. Since Mistborn can use all metals, they therefore have different types of powers!
Does that answer your questions a bit? It seems like you did get the gist of it! ||
|| I’m not sure if you are still on audiobook, but my physical copy has a little summary at the end of all the metals and what they can do. If you are interested I can send a picture of that!
I sometimes like to reference it when they are using metal names to check what power it matches. ||
Thank you so much! ||It does answer my questions, and it's still pretty early in the book so I'm sure more will be revealed later. I had assumed allomancy was specific to Kelsier but it makes more sense now||
I am still on the audiobook, but I should get the ebook within a couple weeks!
Yay! Good to hear
Beginning of ch 4 ||it's interesting that Kelsior can distinguish which type of metal to "burn" or enhance? And that he knows when it's running low? Also, why did he just take the safe instead of just burning through the safe door to open it and take everything 😭||
|| free metal ||
||I don't think he can burn metals outside of himself? Not sure. But I am questioning why he ripped the whole safe out of the wall instead of ripping the door open like he did with the compartment it was in
||
||oh! Maybe I misunderstood. I remember him finding the safe in the wall and he found the locking mechanism and the door opened. I thought that was the safe itself not the compartment||
I've read this book already it's great! The trilogy is fierce
Ch 28 || “Kelsier was right again. I wonder if he ever gets tired of that.” Vin, darling, we all know he doesn’t
Elend pov
“Valette suffers my hair the way it is, but would she like it better if I had it styled?”
“What would happen if someone decided to send a Mistborn to deal with her and her uncle?” Oh Elend… you don’t know half of it
Oh, oh, Elend is getting the wrong assumptions from the right clue.. I hope Vin gets to properly explain herself rather than being marked as a spy to bring House Venture down ||
Ch 29 || Glad to see Vin enjoying reading more!
DANG VIN, SPITTING THE LIES LIKE IT’S NOTHING! Impressive ||
Ch 30 || SO MUCH IS HAPPENING IN THIS CHAPTER!
“The truth is, my house needs me - and it’s more important than you are.” Dang, okay Elend… that’s just cold. I hope he didn’t mean that but just wanted to create space between them for Vin’s sake.
Shan is a Misborn?? She will assassinate Elend?? Their duel was so cool! Such a smart move from Vin to end her atium early. Although: wouldn’t Shan just keep burning it to have the advantage of atium? Now it seems she stopped burning because Vin did so. I guess she wanted to keep her reserves just in case? ||
Ch 31 || “She wasn’t trying to spy on me - she was just trying to rob me.” What a nice progressive way of putting it
On the one hand I love Elend’s way of thinking in this situation. On the other hand it feels a bit weird how obsessed he is with skaa and the fact that Vin is a skaa (so now he feels extra excited?) ||
Ch 32 || MARSH IS DEAD???
and the way how oh god

I wonder if it really was Marsh, since it said the corpse was barely recognisable. It seems so unlikely to me that they’d miss the letter he wrote. Perhaps it is all a trap…
OHHH I expected Kelsier to go directly to the nobility, not to the Pits of Hathsin! That’s so cool!! Reading about Walin navigating the pits, and realising people do this day after day… pfff, it makes me sick. That’s so terrible. So this is what Kelsier endured and escaped from. ||
Ch 33 || Well, yes, Vin was right. But I can completely understand Kelsier’s reaction seeing his crew. So I suppose they did actually get Marsh. However, it was a trap
Elend coming for Valette got me laughing for some reason
what a hero
He tries to make a difference in his own way, I appreciate it
I bet the duel between Kelsier and the Inquisitor will be sick
||
✨ This is the first time I will be reading this book.
✨ I only read Elantris before. Really like the book and had this one on my tbr for way too long now.
✨ I plan to start right now, though I might not read too much today.
✨ Since it's a fantasy book, I suppose there is some magic involving mist (perhaps the main character's), so I think it's going to be at the front.
Yay! Enjoy!
Prologue
||Ok, so the mist is some kind of phenomenon in this story and not actual magic manifestation of someone's.
I am intrigued by the story, seems like it will be about the poor people fighting for their rights.. Wonder how that'll turn out.||
I will try and finish this today 🙏
Ch 34 || Such character progression for Kelsier to save Elend. I suppose he does care a lot about Vin and who she cares and loves.
Well, this Chapter took a turn for the worse
||
Ch 35 || Kelsier’s letter to Vin struck home
So Kelsier did have the Eleventh Metal..
OHH YESSS I kind of forgot about that room lol
cool that Vin’s going back! ||
Ch 36 || I love how Elend corrects his thinking of Skaa by comparing them to Valette. She really made quite the impression huh, our little Vin
||
More on ch 36 + theorising about Allomancy || So, at first I thought the Eleventh Metal opposed Atium since Atium shows other people’s future, and the Eleventh shows other people’s past. But, you could also say that it’s an alloy to Gold which shows your own past, while the Eleventh shows other people’s pasts. Meaning there should be one more alloy to the other metal.
However, perhaps it’s something entirely different. Maybe Gold and Atium are each other’s opposites, and the Eleventh is the opposite of the metal the Inquisitor gave Vin in the prison? It cancelled out her stocked metals. The Eleventh might stock you up on all the metals. Vin already had all the metals stocked up except Gold, which was why it felt like burning Gold? But then it makes no sense she saw other people’s past
In other words, it is clear I’m still purely theorising and thinking about it. I’m not entirely sure yet how everything would work. Fun to try and figure it out though! ||
Ch 37 || My gods 😭😭 Sazed WENT AFTER VIN TO SAFE HER?? His promise to Kelsier knows no end. Sazed is the GOAT and the MVP. I don’t care if he manages to save her or not, the fact that he did this instead of preserving the knowledge he gained by going to the Keepers…. 😭😭😭
BUT OF COURSE HE MANAGES TO GET THEM OUT, I forgot for a bit he can just do that ✨
Very cute how Elend came back for Vin, and their dialogue made me giggle. However, Vin’s “No one’s ever come back before” feels a bit out of place since Sazed also came back for her (and supposedly left to go to the other Keepers). I need more recognition for this absolute beast of a man. ||
Ch 38 || Marsh is not dead!
It feels fitting he became an Inquisitor, since he was really good with his Allomancy
IT’S RASHEK??? Wowwwww I didn’t see that coming LOL
I really didn’t expect the Lord Ruler to already die in this book. I expected it to be a trilogy-wide goal haha. I can see how this book can be read as a standalone!
Also, perhaps Kelsier isn’t the new ‘Lord Ruler’, but in some way Marsh is. So I was close enough I think
||
Epilogue || It seems there might be a deeper meaning behind the title ‘Mistborn’, huh
Well the epilogue basically explained what happened quite extensively. Such contrast to Stormlight Archive lol.
Ohh so Elend became king. Well, that makes sense! The ending part was really cute
||
Finished! Yay
HOW DID YOU READ THAT FAST
I was so hooked
I really liked it!
The prologue has me
Ch. 1: ||so Vin always rolls a natural 20 in her uhhh magical persuasion skill
so far I'm really digging how... steampunk-y this feels, in comparison to Elantris or The Stormlight Archive (which is, effectively, Ye Olden Days in Cosmere lore)||
Ch. 2:
Trying to catch up with everything we learned so far: ||there are servants (skaa), inquisitors, Mistborn (trying REALLY hard not to make associations with Elantris or the Stormlight Archive here
), people who burn metals in their stomach, people to drink metals to uhhhhh gain powers (metal poisoning anyone) AND the ruling powers are incredibly charismatic and easily recognisable (shaven heads, face tattoos, GODFORSAKEN SCARY SPIKE EYED FRIENDS), all before page 45. Exciting!!||
Ch 4: ||I feel so bad for Vin sometimes, it's so clear the trauma she had and she's so distrusting of everyone 😭||
Starting this one! 🦋
Prologue: ||I really want someone to kick Tresting's ass as soon as possible. He's seriously out there being worried about ash stains on his suit while watching hundreds of slaves work in the fields, all the while whining how lazy they are. He takes pride on how efficient he is, the way he talks about executing families to prevent runaways reminds me of how someone would talk about a pest control strategy. He clearly doesn't see the skaa as really human. There's an obvious hierarchy here; Tresting is an absolute terror to the skaa and they fear him, but then there's always "a bigger fish." Tresting seems to be terrified of the Steel Inquisitors, for example. ||
||Actually, it seems that no one sees the skaa as fully human. Tresting's been raping skaa women, and it's all fine because he "cleans up his messes." It's so utterly depressing.||
||Kelsier kind of changes the whole narrative. Everyone around him is so deep in survival mode that it's pretty impossible for them to have any hope for their future, and Kelsier very actively refuses that. He smiles specifically because the Lord Ruler wants to claim joy for himself. There probably isn't much Kelsier can do right now in terms of bettering his situations, so he does what he can with these small defiant acts. Overall, I like the way he is set up in this prologue. He definitely gives off reckless and kind of flippant vibes, but it's also evident that he's been through a lot. The scars show it, and I think he has both internal and external ones. ||
||Well I'm glad that the girl is okay, but damn the skaa are now in a mess. And I was definitely wrong about the amount of things Kelsier can do
||
||So far Kelsier is the center of the narrative, I think it's easy to get swept up in his history and the pretty reckless things he does. That being said, I find Mennis very interesting as well, and I hope he stays in the story. I'm intrigued whether he will take any sort of leadership role now that Kelsier has essentially forced that role on him and changed their situation so drastically. I totally get Mennis; change can be absolutely terrifying (and in this case it definitely is, there's so much at stake), and being pushed into it by someone else is even more terrifying. ||
Ch 1: ||Oh I like how there's an immediate connection to the prologue with the same opening sentence||
||Same with Kelsier and Mennis, I also really like Vin as a character. She's clearly very smart and observant, in fact, I think she's smarter than almost anyone around her. Still, she has to have some kind of survival strategy in place, and that is not being seen as smart. I don't know what to make of Reen yet, I hope we get more of the backstory there and more insight into their sibling dynamic. I'm now hesitantly placing him into the "a real piece of work" category, but I don't think things are that black and white here. Nevertheless, teaching your sister that everyone will betray her and then betraying her yourself as a lesson? That's so cruel, even if it was meant to toughen her up. ||
||Tresting was definitely bad, but so is Camon. He's physically violent and a direct threat to Vin. I'm happy that Vin can manage him, though, and that she's not totally powerless around him. She's doing this dance where she gives him enough submission to keep herself safe, but still nudges him toward the right decisions. She's observant enough to manage this, and then of course she has her power to help her.||
||I'm so bad at understanding these different magic aspects
The prologue hinted that this world has a magic system where you burn metals? Vin's ability feels different though (or at least, she doesn't seem to understand it the same way Kelsier understood his tin). Does she have the same "category" of power as Kelsier does, but just doesn't yet fully know how to manage it, or is it based on a different logic entirely? Does her ability correspond to any metal at all? Also, in the prologue there was the line about how the Lord Ruler commands men like Tresting to kill the skaa women after a few weeks because there can't be any risk that there will be "children who might possess powers that skaa weren't even supposed to know existed." Is Vin in this category? Because clearly she can do something extraordinary that maybe she isn't supposed to be able to do, and the people around her aren't aware of her power either||
||Omg she's also sixteen, that's so young. All this heaviness and exhaustion relating to her circumstances is sitting on a teenager's shoulders. She needs a hug||
Ch 2: ||Luthadel feels like such a depressing and hopeless place, everything is black and stained by ash. It's basically a place that's been dying for a very long time. ||
||Kelsier and Dockson are such a fun duo! They have an easy warmth between them, and I suppose they have a lot in common. I don't know much about Dockson, but maybe he has a heavier past too? ||
||Okay, there's eight basic Allomantic metals. Kelsier is apparently burning all of them simultaneously. The power he gets after the zinc, the one he uses on the Inquisitor to yank on his emotions is presumably the same family of ability that Vin has, just intentional and controlled. I'm very curious about the difference between a Misting and whatever Kelsier is. He seems to be something rarer and more powerful. ||
||About the Inquisitor, what are they exactly? Like how are they made? ||
||Kelsier is basically poking an Inquisitor with a stick and running, which feels completely on brand for him at this point. I'm not really worried about him right now, he's clearly survived worse, but I'm very worried about Vin. She has no idea any of this is happening around her. ||
Ch 3: ||I feel terrible for Vin. She's spent all this time thinking how everyone betrays everyone, how Reen's voice is echoing in her head just repeating this to her constantly, and then the one person she reaches out to immediately confirms her worst beliefs about people. Like she allowed herself to make one tiny gesture toward some kind of human connection, and it was a disaster and caused her harm. That's so sad.||
||At least Camon got some consequences for his horrible actions, that's a win||
||I can absolutely believe that Reen just left the crew suddenly and abandoned Vin, but maybe that's not the case? Idk, I still feel like there's going to be some twist later. Maybe Reen was forcibly taken or something?||
||Kelsier has these two sides to him. He can joke and be very sunny with Dockson, but he also has a dangerous and cold side to him as well. ||
||Can Allomancers heal themselves or others? Vin is clearly in a great amount of pain, and neither Kelsier or Vin herself is doing anything to ease it. ||
||It's a juicy detail that Vin's father is a high prelan in the Steel Ministry. Maybe she will meet him/at least see him later on in the book?||
||I'm happy that Vin now has a name for what she is, she can finally learn to really handle her powers. She'll eventually be very powerful. Still, I feel a bit worried about where Kelsier is going with this whole "you don't have to play by their rules, and that makes you even more powerful" speech. It's very persuasive and exciting, most likely true as well, but I just feel uneasy about the fact that Kelsier is most likely going to try to recruit a young, isolated and newly powerful person into something very dangerous. Yes, Vin is definitely a future powerhouse in the making, but she's still 16 and vulnerable. I'm not saying Kelsier's intentions with training Vin are bad, but I'm a bit cautious whether it serves her or serves him. ||
Ch.3: ||please let Kell be a mentor to Vin and not a romantic interest
also, the characters in this are so charismatic so far, I'm immediately hooked in a way that didn't happen with The Stormlight Archive characters||
It's refreshing for ||Brandy Sandy to actually give us context and lore and a minimum amount of understanding this early into a book and I'm loving it
||
Ch. 4: ||holy exposition of metals
maybe a little too much lore, Brandy Sandy||
|| I know right
Had to laugh at your comment for ch 4 though
The Brandy of the past is another man… giving us all the lore ||
Ch5 ||Kelsior is explaining the metal to Vin and when during the steel test, all I could think was KINETIC ENERGY AND THE TRANSFER OF ENERGY???||
Ok I'm wondering if the audiobook I have has different chapter markers than the book because I just finished Part 1 and the next chapter it says is "9", but the audiobook displays "6" 😅
Part 1: ||is the coin the vin kept, maybe proof that her mom was also a misting/Mistborn?||
Ch. 5: ||Mr. Dude went full Assassin's Creed in this chapter
|| also, slight Stormlight Archive mention ||the walking on air part resembled Lashings A LOT to me...
||
My thoughts exactly
reading The Stormlight Archive was a lot of "what the duck is that, who the hell are you, why the heck"
||That's a really good theory!||
Ch6: || i want to be as delusional as this people are||
Ch6: || i want
to be as delusional
as this people are||
|| Wow that’s so smart
I didn’t even think about that ||
Part 2: ||I love Sazed, I wonder if he's the person behind the quotes at the end of each chapter? And is Keeper another type of person like Skaa or Misting? I assume not all Terracemen are like Sazed in his knowledge. Also, starting to have mixed feelings on Kelsier, he's very much the type of person who says "everyone on the other side is on the wrong side and is therefore the enemy". Also, CAN STEEL INQUISITORS EVEN SEE IF THEY GOT SPIKES FOR EYES???????? ||
Also, my audiobook definitely has the wrong chapter markers 😭
16||maybe Kelsier or the Lord Ruler is the one who is talking at the end of each chapter 🤔||
18 ||LMAOOOOOO I love this banter between Elend and Vin. But for whatever reason, I keep imagining Lord Elend as Willy Wonka from the chocolate factory (johnny Depp version) 😂 ||
Still had to send in my final thoughts! This has spoilers for the ending of the book :)
|| In short: I simply loved this book! My favorite aspects of it were the ball aspect (which was very surprising to me but I do enjoy a good ball), the humor and sarcastic remarks, as well as the dynamics of several characters (Sazed, Elund and Kelsier) with Vin.
Other positive thoughts I had on this book, mainly in comparison to the Stormlight Archives were that Mistborn was explained a lot more clearly (clear explanation of the types of Allomancy, how they work and their limits), and that - as a whole - a lot actually happens in this book? Like, the Lord Ruler is already gone? I did not expect that haha.
Neutral thoughts, more observative things I noticed were the fact that the explanation were probably a lot clearer since Kelsier had to explain Vin a lot of things since she was new in this scene, making it easier to understand the world while not feeling info dumpy (although, I must say, it was sometimes a bit on the edge of that). I liked the multiple POV allowing the reader the time to realise not everyone's POV is as reliable. For example, Vin is just a 16-year-old naïve girl, making me hesitate about Elund's intentions almost up until the end due to Kelsier's strong prejudice. Additionally, I can completely see Mistborn being advertised as a standalone. There is still a lot of worldbuilding to discover, but it isn't a huge cliff hanger that makes you want to continue immediately (apart from the Lord Ruler's cryptic message, haha). ||
|| Things I didn't mind but I can imagine it being an issue for others is that the 'heist' aspect of it was not very present to me? I think it felt more like an infiltration rather than a heist and I can see how the advertisement of it being a heist can result in different expectations for others. In the end, the 'heist' takes the whole book which could be considered quite long. For me, personally, it ended up being quite a fast-paced book since I expected the Lord Ruler to be the enemy for the whole trilogy... so...
||
|| My following thoughts regard the ending and some thoughts I have on it based on fan theories regarding the Cosmere, including HEAVY spoilers for all of Stormlight Archives. Again to note, it regards fan theories, meaning the spoilers also go a bit further than just Stormlight Archives content 'as is written' but also interpretations of the characters, what they could be in the future, while not literally written in the books. So if you mind reading potential spoilers for future books (if the fan theories are right), I recommend to not read this! ||
Heavy spoilers for Mistborn + all of Stormlight Archives + fan theories on Cosmere, do not read if you don't want to know any fan theories on the Cosmere and its characters || So, I suppose Kelsier's death is considered the plottwist of the book, but I'm a bit sad since it didn't hit me at all. I was already aware of the fan theory that Kelsier supposedly is Thaidakar in Stormlight Archives, making him quite a big deal (I'll refrain from going more into it since I don't want to share too much of the theory if anyone doesn't want to read it). One of the reasons I so incredibly loved Mistborn was because of the huge role Kelsier played in it and reading about him just being a silly, goofy, comedic albeit reckless man - doing it all for the woman he so loved. In some ways, he reminded me of the Lord Ruler in the logbook that could be read in the pre-chapter text. I thought the resemblance was absolutely terrific and gave me chills. I can't help but think it must be true. However, that also means the death didn't really surprise me, since I know he can't be entirely dead. I expected him to return as a Steel Inquisitor, but that turned out to be Marsh instead. I believe Thaidakar also has some type of metal in his eyes (forgot the specifics), so I assume somewhere in the trilogy Kelsier might be seen again as an inquisitor, but unsure as what kind. This makes me very excited to learn more about his fate! ||
Ch. 8: ||Kelsier is preparing Vin for the cruel reality of undergoing an MRI /j||
The description of the ||mistwraith was mesmerising (and very... Ghibli-like, in my mind, for some reason). I like how Kelsier immediately made me feel like it was a poor beast rather than a fearsome predator||
Ooo lots of useful info from chapter 8: ||Kelsier has seen healthy trees with green leaves
; Sazed is a welcome addition to the party and we get to learn more about the lore and the people of this World; I am so scared that Kelsier has been manipulating Vin's feelings throughout this entire exchange
she would feel so betrayed if she were to find out ugh||
Part TWO and I'm loving this so far
I felt exactly the same as you, especially the Sims walk LMAOOO
Ch. 9: ||Sazed
he's my favourite character so far||
YES YES YES || god he is just so FUNNY ||
I forgot to add a rating, I rated it 5 ⭐

i have question but one chapter away AKSDJFALSD
Ch. 11: ||"(...) it's bad manners to touch the emotions of your friends." – the build-up has been lovely. I hope any confrontation with the Inquisitors is just as grand as their reputation||
Hello @everyone !
We have reached the midpoint of this BR! For those who haven’t finished the book yet, you have until 1 May to do so! Plenty of time to still get reading~ ✨
Finished: Raya
Started: Alex, Ulysses, Inniea, Vetrina, Sirence, Trev, Sofie (let me know if I missed you!)
As this is the midpoint of the BR, we’d like to post some additional questions to discuss. Be mindful, the question behind the spoiler tag is for the people that have at least finished chapter 6! Please be mindful of others and use spoiler tags where appropriate! ♥️
- How far are you in the book right now, and do you think you will be able to finish before the deadline?
- Spoilers up to chapter 6! || If you could join a heist crew in a fantasy world, what would your role be? ||
- Brandon Sanderson is currently working on the script of a Mistborn adaptation! What would your fancast look like?
- What do you think of the author's writing style so far?
Happy reading!
- I have finished to chapter 7 and I hope/believe in me to finish this one since I am curious how it will end
- ||I would choose the emotion controller people, if this answers your question lol. I forgot how they call them ||
- First of all HELLO I DIDN'T KNOW THAT! EXCITED how it will turn out. Honestly, I see Orlando Bloom as Kel, as for Vin i don't know. Haven't watched western movies in a whiiile
- I love his writing style. It's not overthrown with many complicated english synonyms and it's quite straight forward. Still, i have never read his books before so assuming to those who read his books || it's an unusual thing for him to throw all information in the beginning ||
WOW Orlando would be a good Kel
I didn't think of him yet
- I've finished, so yes!
- || I think what would fit me most is to be the person that organises everything and makes sure that it runs smoothly. What I would like to be is the infiltrator like Vin is doing
it doesn't fit my personality but that would be so cool || - I liked Inniea's suggestion for Orlando Bloom as Kelsier, but for the sake of variety I will name someone else
. Perhaps Paul Rudd? For Vin, I think Amita Suman would do a great job (although visually they are not a perfect match, I just think her Inej-coded acting would fit so well). Character introduced at chapter 8: || As Sazed I'd love to see Michael Sheen or maybe Benedict Cumberbatch? || Character introduced at chapter 12 || For Elund, hmm... Luke Thompson maybe?
I'm kind of digging that idea HAHAHA || - I thought it was quite straight-forward and easy to understand! There's a lot of explanation for the magic system, but I feel like the writing style is a lot more clear than for example in Stormlight Archives. I really enjoyed the comic relief inbetween!
I haven't started the book yet, but i plan to start next week and can finish on time!
- I reached chapter 13 and I'll definitely finish before the deadline!
- I know I'd like to think I'm ||sophisticated, smart and alluring, but the reality is I'd probably be the brawn of the operation instead
|| - This has the potential to be really cool on screen, especially if Branderson gets to work on it. I realised I was WAY off with the idea of the characters in my head vs. their canon appearance, so, heck, I want this to be ANIMATED instead; make it Ghibli style ||Kelsier has that Howl voice and trickster-like qualities in my head and I'm KEEPING IT THAT WAY
|| - I'm a sucker for Brandy Sandy
it just popped up since i was thinking of the blond dude from LOTR
ghibli style would be soo awesome with all the magical thingys
ghibli style would
be soo awesome with all the
magical thingys
Just finished Part II: ||I like that Kelsier is reckless and seems to make mistakes. I was afraid he'd be all-knowing and an "all according to plan" type guy, but he's actually pretty human. The rest of the troupe doesn't seem to be willing to go along with his antics it feels...||
- Currently on Ch 21, I should be able to finish on time!
- ||Id probably be a regular thief, I don't want responsibility of leadership lol. But I had allomancy, I think I'd want the steel or iron push/pull?||
- All of my imaginings have been a mix of fictional and real characters from other series 😂. So I'm not sure who I'd cast.
- It's very detailed, and I find myself having to go back and listen because if I zone out for 2 seconds I missed half the context already

Part 1:
|| i really like the book so far even though i still find myself questioning the allomancy things
||
|| seeing that Vin knoes nothing of the actual World kinda broke me and the way she thinks about people and reacts to closeness or some type of kindness. KEL YOU BETTER NOT BETRAY HER. MY HEART WON'T BE ABLE TO TAKE THAT||
|| i wish that Kel will be some Kind of father/brother figure to Vin since Reen wasn't a good one. ||
|| for the coming part i hope to get to know more about Kel's actual plan and what happened in the pits. Also how the empire became what it is. ||
Side note/resemblance to the book Jakob the liar by Jurek Becker (german book):
|| the tree scene in chapter 8 reminded me of the scenes in Becker's book since they haven't seen any green trees either in the Camps during the ww2||
Ch9: || In the end, I worry that my arrogance shall destroy us all. I didn't sign up for a heartbreak||
Ch. 18: I ADORE the ||Vin chapters where she gets to mingle with the upper classes||
He's everywhere I think 😂
finally going to start this today or tomorrow !!
More thoughts on ch 21: ||🫣 me watching the fight between Bilg and Demoux. I get the feeling Kelsier isn't going to succeed in his plan to take down the final empire 😰, maybe I'm too anxious for him and this grand plan||
last thoughts on ch 21: ||you know Vin always says that Reen says to not trust anyone because they'll always betray you?? Kelsier's inner thoughts at the end of the chapter towards Ham makes me think that Kelsier is going to betray them all and Vin is going to be hurt (emotionally) 😭||
Ch 8: ||Vin telling Kelsier she's only staying because she wants to see what happens
Mood.||
Ch 9: ||So maybe Vin is the "chosen one" of this series and not Kelsier, since she's learning allomancy so quickly. I think it's very possible that Vin has two Mistborn parents.||
prologue ||i think im already in love with this. the writing is very immersive, it forces you to sit down and pay attention, and even though the prologue was long-ish, it didnt feel that way. also im very curious to know about the mist||
chp 1 ||interesting how both the characters that have magic (that we've met so far) say that they dont know how they have magic or how they know how to use it. both of them are expressing the same sentiment. and omg, why do dystopian worlds always treat women like shit?||
Light spoilers for The Stormlight Archive 1: Damn chapter 21 is ||making me put my tinfoil hat on
that big ass cave looks like a prime location for everyone to be ambushed
would love to know what Kelsier's plan is. Also, I understand this... World? is part of the Cosmere and unrelated to the planet in The Stormlight Archives, but the relationship between the noblemen/ Skaa and the Humans/Listeners is very... odd to me||
ALSO also, ||lots of interesting notions about beliefs and systematic oppression: Ham wondering whether this cycle should be broken really speaks multitudes. The skaa have been enslaved, oppressed and beaten for so long that even their leaders (like Ham) wonder if they're inferior in some way.||
Ch, 24: ||WHAT, what happened?!
||
I'm ||SO divided
I don't know who to TRUST but I'm LOVING the character work in this||
Ch 12: ||I bet the Deepness is real and is going to play a major part in this trilogy at some point. Also I was mentally screaming at Vin not to leave her seat at the ball. I knew something would go wrong lol.||
Ch 13: ||I think Kelsier and Sazed are wrong; Lord Elend probably did take an interest in Vin. The atium effect is pretty cool. I like how two people using atium kinda cancel each other out.||
chp 4 ||omg i love a heist. also vin is quickly becoming my favourite, i love a tortured protagonist||
Ch 14: ||Holy shit, this chapter was intense. The Inquisitors are terrifying. And it sounds like they might just be stationed in that room, so maybe no one ratted Kelsier out the first time. Also Sazed to the rescue??
||
Up to Ch 15: ||I was interested in the quotes that are at the beginning of the chapters, so I went back and read all the ones so far. I wonder if they're from the Lord Ruler before he became the Lord Ruler
I was thinking it was Sazed for a few chapters but it doesn't make much sense now.||
23: ||ok I know I said I liked the banter between Vin and Elend, but I also don't want this to turn into a romance series 🥲. I was cringing when Vin confronted Elend about sleeping with Skaa women and Elend confesses about what happened when he was 13. I think she's harboring too close feelings for him and that doesn't bode well for the mission||
23||IM NOT DONE EITH THE CHAPTER BUT I HOPE TO DEAR GOD THAT SHE DOESNT INVITE ELEND TO THE CREW||
Finished Part II and ||I don't know how to feel about the rebellion being decimated so quickly||
Ahhhh ch. 26 was ||such a strong chapter. Kell's conviction, the literal oppression by the Lord Ruler cementing him as The Bad Guy once again and the fact Vin has Very Noble Blood after all. She's probably the real Hero of Ages instead of Kelsier
||
23||I don't like where this is going ... IM SCARED. Is2g Kelsier has a hidden agenda and is going to betray them all to reach his goal. Ugh I feel so uncomfortable listening to Kelsier be so dismissive towards Vin and this generalized opinion of "all nobles are bad and deserve to die!!!!". I just hate it because I'm always of the opinion of "don't generalize!!! you don't know everything and everyone!!||
I am starting this!
Prologue: ||It's a bit of an adjustment, having finished Wind & Truth like an hour ago, diving right into a new universe, but im already hooked, very interested in this Kelsier character already
||
ch 1 ||Hmm not sure how I feel about Vin basically being treated like that, but interesting this is another person who has special powers. I wonder if it's actually Luck or just something Vin named luck.||
ch 2 ||ahhh, so it's a little too good to be true, to just be able to manipulate people unnoticed. These inquisitors sound scary tho
and I wonder what Kelsier would do with Vin, recruit her?||
ch 3 ||okayyyy i like it, the fight was brutal buut very cool to see Vin getting help from Kelsier, learning about her powers.
I am now 100% hooked
||
yes!!
25: ||I was so mad at Kelsier and Yeden. Kelsier for lying to his men and letting Yeden think they were overpowered - and Yeden for going on a power trip and getting his men killed. Kelsier and his crew are the ones with powers!! Even if you thought he could transfer powers he would probably have to be there first! And now Yeden's dead along with many others.||
27: ||I'm glad Vin finally caught on to the 9th metal. I was trying to figure out why no one was talking about it!! Also, I wonder if Allomancy is derived from Feruchemy? 🤔 ||
Ch. 28: ||"His father sat in his chair, speaking quietly with TenSoon, the Venture Kandra. Elend still wasn't used to the creature's most recent body, which had once belonged to a servant in the Hasting household." — uhhhhh what is a Kandra and why is it in someone else's body
I wanna fight Elend's father so bad
||
Ughhh ||the drama of it all||
Ch. 29: ||"If allomancers could steal strength from my people, it would already be known. It was a clever thought, however." — this, along with the Lord Ruler's accounts of the Terrismen, feels... foreshadow-y
||
up to ch 6 ||If I were Vin, I'd be so overwhelmed with everything, it seems she has an entirely new life, different kind of thieving, actual infiltration, learning she has so much power. and the way these people are planning this operation seems all too much like planning a picnic. What do you mean Yeden'll figure it out what to do with the lord if you can't kill the lord??? shouldn't that at least be part of the contract?||
CH 7 ||I love the system, although as soon as Kelsier mentioned that the perfect pewter alloy should have lead in it, i was like "ah, we're going to poison ourselves with lead
", kinda threw me off a little bit||
Pretty sure Brandy Sandy had just learned the meaning of the word "maladroitly" when he wrote this book
It's in every chapter it feels
Ch12 || oh i can't wait when the lord ruler actually is in a scene. I need to know more about him and the pits.
Vin seeing her father was not on my Bingo card.
And PLEASE brandon don't make Lord Elend be a villain. He seems so nice with reading his books. Don't come at me, i fomd for men who love reading
||
Ch. 32: damn, the visual of ||Kelsier crawling back into the pits of hell to destroy the geodes is so strong. I feel like we were all expecting Marsh to be found, and I love how everything is moving into action right now; a Sanderlanche
||
Ch. 34: ||
||
Can't stop reading this
||Lord Ruler just bitch-slapped the life out of Kell omg
/lh||
Onto part 5! The final sprint
chp 7 ||im wondering, how does kelsier know about all these metals and what they do? hes not a nobleman, he wasnt even born a mistborn, and i doubt if there are any books on the subject. where did he get all this information?||
||I think it was mentioned a few chapters earlier that he was trained by someone else. Gemmel i think his name was? It didn't explain a whole lot, it was more of a passing comment, only that there's this person and that he trained Kelsier||
Chapter 36 is ||looking grim
I'm pretty sure this book is gonna end in a cliffhanger||
SO CLOSEEE
are you finishing today??
Yes!
Ch. 37: ||I agree that the "no one has ever gone back for me before" was a little forced; Sazed just did? And he's the best eunuch in the land?? Sazed my beloved. Forced romantic plot aside, I'm ready for the final confrontation.||
|| Sazed the GOAT deserved more recognition ||
LETSGOOO!!
Ok, hear me out: this was a truly distinct experience from reading The Stormlight Archive and I like that... but it's so hard for me to BEAT the colossal achievement that is The Stormlight Archive as a whole. This one felt like a younger, less confident, less bold Brandy Sandy book... but by no means was it a failure.
||I really enjoy the character work in this one, but some of the crew members felt a liiiiittle lacking when it came to depth. The world was not as fleshed out as I would have like, but I also feel like this is me comparing a 650 page book to the HUMONGOUS tomes of Stormlight; some of those books are, what, 1.4k words?? On the plus side, I felt like Elantris was slightly less well-accomplished, so this series seems to be a middle-ground for me so far!||
||I'm used to Brandon Sanderson getting info-dumpy throughout the series, and there's always lots of meetings between the important characters to introduce us to core concepts. I get it, and I see it, and I still don't hate it. I felt like the final 100 pages were a liiiiitle cramped? Let him cook!! I can take it!!! Thoroughly enjoyed a female MC (although I seriously hope her main motivation isn't going to be the love interest
) and I'm excited to see what the next books bring.||
4
for me! I had so much fun.
ch 8 ||I feel bad for Vin that she has this saboteur voice of her brother in her head all the time, although i wouldn't fully trust Kelsier in this situation either. I'm curious to the next parts
||
Can’t wait to start this!
Prologue: ||oh my god its so great to get back into Brandon Sanderson's writing because his writing in this so far is amazing and this prologue definetely hooked me||
End of part 2:
|| i love how Vin is such a brave and stubborn girl and stand to what she wants. I almost got a heartattack because I thought Vin might disappear for longer but thank it was Sazed. I am so curious how the book will help them further and just in general so curious what will happen in the next chapters.||
|| oh, i need to hear more how you came to them.being of the lord ruler. But like after we finish the books since i fear it will foreshadow for me or just come to unintended spoilers. I will definitely try to look from the lord ruler's perspective now||
||It was chapter 15's opening that got me thinking. I thought for a few chapters before that that it was Sazed's story, but the Hero of Ages comment threw me. Also that opening talks of the narrator's reign, and how a Terris man is preaching against it (the Lord Ruler doesn't like Terrismen). So I went back through the book up to ch 15 and found mentions of the Deepness before it was mentioned in the main narrative, and implying there are multiple kingdoms when there's only one in the current time as far as we know. So that's how I made the guess||
|| interesting because i always assumed it's Kelsier especially the last or second last one about the bretayal. ||
Edit ch16 || i see your point now since it's quite clear in ch16 opening that it might be the lord ruler since he says he was no King blah blah and just a normal person which kelsier wasnt||
||I thought it was Kelsier from the beginning until someone here mentioned that it could be Sazed
||
||Tbh there was no thought behind the Sazed guess other than that||
||I never thought of him to begin with||

I like them though. It's like a short Story embedded in the whole story
ch 12 ||Oehhh, i can't tell yet if Eland and Vin will be lovers or enemies but i like this dynamic. I also think Vin did well, even tho she might not should have adressed the heir like that? although i doubt he cares himself||
up to ch 15 ||part 2 done. I guess Kelsier is right about Vin, but damn that was insane. wtf are those inquisitors????
||
Right??? the ||inquisitors freaked me out
||
||SAME, already the descriptions of them were a bit disturbing to me, i already see myself getting nightmares from them in the adaptation
||
Coming back to your thoughts: || May I know what he actually is? I probably won't be reading any other book by Sanderson so feel free to spoiler m||
||Glad that I am not the only one reacting like that about the young Lord||
|| I can tell you if you don't mind! : || Spoiler warning for the Cosmere (more specifically stormlight archives and other books): || Hoid is a recurring character that appears in a lot of other books of Sanderson. In the vaguest sense that makes him a 'worldhopper', going from world to world throughout different books. If you want some more specifics on him:|| Heavy stormlight archives spoilers: || In stormlight archives we learn that Hoid is very old and very powerful. It seems he is Mistborn (which at the time I didn't realise, but now I know what a Mistborn is and it does seem that's what he's doing
) and he has some other powerful magic too. So seeing him as a 'lowly informant' feels very humbling
||
|| I fear the young Lord has stolen not only Vin's heart...
||
Thank you for the insights!
CH 19 ||Hoid mentioned
smart of Kelsier to spread rumors to create chaos
but wow, a rumor spreads fast like that wtf ||
up to ch 23 ||
AAAAH he gave her the handkerchief
im scared Eland is going to betray Vin
||
|| I fangirled SO HARD ||
up to CH 25 ||WTF??? I mean, i know it was dumb of Kelsier to lie to the garrison, he should've at least brought Yeden up to speed about the lie. But I have a feeling that even with that safeguard Yeden would've still just fought that fight because of the conditioning. Things are going well, you grow tired of waiting, you wanna try stuff out. It's just stupid to do it like this tho.
please tell me there's another way||
||SAME, i was like
||
CH 27 ||Stations with Soothers, that makes sense, they probably have people everywhere all the time using their Misting skills. The Inquistors tho still freak me out, they're noblemen but they're also creatures??
||
im still reading CH 28 but ||AAAAH ELEND POV AAAAAAH||
CH 30 ||
whaaat she tried to have him murdered??? she's a mistborn??? whaaaaaaaaaaa that's crazy. I bet you she put that rumor of her being a soother out herself so nobody would guess she's a full mistborn
but AAAAH VIN SAVED HIM ||
CH 31 and Stormlight Archive Book 5 spoilers ||Felt
FROM THE GHOSTBLOODS?? WTFFF oh this is bad
I wonder who else from the crew is here||
OH I totally missed that??
||I only noticed because I literally dove right into this one
but it seems too much of a coincidence that there's a guy with that name who was confirmed to not be from roshar in here ||
CH 32 ||
MARSH , oh god.
this is gorey scene. How did the inquisitors not find the note tho? This feels weird
||
CH 34 ||HE SAVED ELEND AND THEN HE DIED?!?!?!??!
i cannot believe he did kill an inquisitor but damn, i did not see this coming ||
CH 35 ||oh god, oh no, oh no, I WANNA CONTINUUE READING BUT I CAN'T I HAVE TO SLLEEP
i wanna see if she manages to pull it off||
chp 17 ||hmm i had suspected that the paragraphs at the start of each chapter were from the lord ruler's perspective. also i love seeing vin getting in touch with her feminine side. picking out what dress to wear, wearing perfumes, and all that. and, i think she has a little crush on a certain aristocrat||
Ch 17: ||I keep going back and forth on whether or not I think Mare actually betrayed the crew
I think Kelsier's attitude about Mare and her possible betrayal is kinda beautiful.||
Ch 18: ||I kinda ship Vin and Elend lol. I know it'll end badly one way or another, but they have such good chemistry.||
|| WAIT WHAT HAHAHAHA IM REREADING THAT TODAY ||
|| Thank god you just finished that
||
I finished!
I need to let it settle for a bit and I’ll be back with final thoughts later
Up to ch21: || i have so many Motive what Kelsier's actual plan is but until now there is really no sign what he is planning. I thought from the beginning that he will betray them and i still stand by it.||
Assumptions regarding Kelsier:
||Maybe he wants to kill the lord ruler but i think there is more to. Maybe he wants to find out if his wife really betrayed hin and for what reason. Maybe he knows more than we know for now about a Secret. ||
Now that is interesting. || if you say it like that, it even might be it. Since for what i know now the lord rulee had been betrayed too, just like Kelsier||
finished! ||i've been sitting here for like 5 hours, because i could not stop reading, i had to get to the end. it's been so long since i read a fantasy series like this, with the politics and scheming. kelsier is an insane genius, i never thought that he would die. i loved the relationship that he had with vin, their father-daughter dynamic.
speaking of vin, she's probably my favourite, she's been through so much shit, and i loved watching her overcome that and grow into herself. she's extremely powerful, and honestly, i'm wondering if vin is also someone like the lord ruler, an allomancer and feruchemist, because it's been mentioned multiple times that she's stronger than the other mistings and mistborn.
i also loved the magic system, it feels so simple to understand. no complicated spellwork or vagueness to it, you have your metals, each metal does something specific, and the real power comes in knowing how to use it properly.
anyways, loved it, 4.5/5 stars||
Let’s gooo!!
final thoughts (Full book spoilers) ||The book was great! I loved Elend and Vin, but I also really cherished the mentor relationship of Kelsier and Vin!! I also really felt for the other members of the crew, even tho we didn't see their POVs, we got to know them so well over the book and I applaud Sanderson for this cast. I didn't have a hard time also getting into the book either, usually with fantasy i have to reread parts of it to understand the systems and lore but I thought that was well maintained. So deffo true that this is a good intro book to the Cosmere. However, I also can see how this was one of the earlier works of Brandon Sanderson, it wasn't as polished as the Stormlight Archive for me and the ending was a bit predictible, I felt towards the end a bit of anticipation of that we'd see the rammifications of what was done already, but then the epilogue ended up being kinda bland. Now I have to wonder how much of the second book we have to read before we get into a sanderlanche again...|| In the end, I enjoyed most of the book, loved certain parts of it very much, but with some of the book's setup I had a bit of an issue. So not a perfect 5 star but a 4.5 ⭐ read for me. I'm still very curious to the sequal, i gotta know how this continues!! I think I'll read the little short story in between for now first
Starting! This is a reread for me and I know my previous notes are in this thread somewhere, so I probably won’t have much new to say
Prologue+ Whole book spoiler: ||Coming back, this feels like a case of “fantasy authors don’t have a grasp on how long a thousand years really is” but also “there’s magic and specifically the guy in charge has access to time magic”
I guess one could technically call this apocalyptic since The Prophecy™️ was never fulfilled||
Starting it today, let's go
Chapter 1-3 ||okay so i got invested and forgot to write my thoughts individually so erm yeah!! So far I'm really interested in the world and I think brandy sandy did a great job with the worldbuilding so far. This could just be because I don't have Stormlight Archives to compare Mistborn to (or really any of his other high fantasies) but I still am really enjoying this so far !
As for the characters I feel so bad for Vin and her situation, I hate Camon so much omg. As for Kelsier, I'm intrigued by his character so far. He does sort of (right now at least) feel sort of like a tropey hero. I do hope that'll change as I get further through the book though !!||
Chp 2, I think?- ||”not many women on thieving crews” I’ve heard that Sanderson said if he had to write Mistborn again, he’d change that. ||
Ch 4 ||so i think this was just the worldbuilding chapter 😭 not complaining tbh it answered a few of my questions but it was a lot of information thrown at me at once||
Ch 20: ||It's interesting that Vin burnt metals other than brass passively before meeting Kelsier and not even know she was doing it. I wonder if she's still doing it unknowingly sometimes, considering Marsh felt like she was soothing him a third time when she insists she wasn't.||
End of part 3:
||Oh Yeden our soldier, i really saw you as a lord up there.
Getting to know what is actually Happening between Elend and his friends was such a relieve. As kelsier said though, probably future allies so not reading much into it.
The part where Kell and Vin Weber running to get to the caves even exhausted me. The more i read, the more exhausted i became hahaha
I am scared on what will may happen to Kelsier since the propebility to Lose Himself is quite high.||
38: ||MARSH?????????????????||
[backlog]very end of part 4 and beginning of part 5 thoughts: ||can't believe Kelsier just DIES????. damn. i wasn't expecting THAT. and VIN, HOMEGIRL WHY YOU GOTTA GET YOURSELF CAPTURED????? Also love that Sazed and Elend came to rescue her but also, Elend r u dumb YOU ONLY BROUGHT A DUELING CANE TO FIGHT?? smh||
since i'm not sure whether i get the time thorughout the day. Can i ask for 2 more days or at least 1? I am almost finished but don't want to rush through the whole book in the last few chapters
38||I wonder if the Lord Rule is actually Rashek? That would explain why the journal stops abruptly and how the he changed his appearance (feruchemy). But why would he treat his fellow Terrismen horrible then?||
38||lmao not Sazed bringing A WOODEN SPEAR as his only weapon
||
38||HOLY SHIT I WAS RIGHT. now that's a freaking plot twist! I still don't know why he would treat his fellow Terrismen poorly if he thought they were the dominant race||
epilogue ||well that explains why the Lord Ruler treated his fellow Terrismen horribly. i had been suspecting that allomancy was an evolved form of feruchemy, but seeing as that the Lord Ruler was perhaps both, maybe that's not the case. i'm also curious as to how one actually becomes an inquisitor? Marsh said there were several corpses and i wonder how the benefits work and if they're related to the spikes. maybe they're technically already dead and are just powerful zombies? or is it like the naruto reanimation jutsu?||
finished! at first, i had a hard time getting into it but now i can see why people thoroughly enjoy his books! he has a lot of detail on the world building and magic, but even the small contexts of how a character is feeling or the situation really makes you feel like you're there. some parts do get a little convoluted and i think the middle 80% is so detail-oriented on the ongoing set up for the plan that the final 10% happened so fast and the pace felt quite different at the end. overall, i really liked it 4/5
Ch 23: ||Oh Vin, you're telling Elend way too much. I think Kelsier is right about Elend. He seems to treat the Skaa like fascinating artifacts, not actual people.||
Ch 25: ||Ugh, poor Yeden, being foolish and duped by Kelsier. And poor Kelsier, making poor decisions and getting people killed. I feel so bad for them and all the men that got killed. Also not Mennis making the slaughter sound like a victory
||
Hey Inniea! You have until the end of the month to finish it
(May 1) . If you still haven't we can wait with the report for a few extra days after that
Is that enough to work with for you?
Oh my days, i thought it ends today
that is more than enough thank you
Oh my days, i thought
it ends today that is more
than enough thank you
hahaha no worries!
happy reading!!
Ok I think I finished ch 1 ||I have no idea what’s going on||
Ok this helps ||I thought it would be like metal bending lol||
Ok this helps ||I
thought it would be like metal
bending lol||
Thank you haikubot
Trying to set aside 2 hours a day for this one
Finished part 1 ||so far so good. A little amused with Sanderson’s obsession with mythology and “something important happened 10k years ago or whatever and is still the foundation of society eons later” and his “ruling class is magic users” fetish. But it’s more story-based than “world-building for no reason”. I’m not terribly invested, but I really like not having 50 side characters to keep track of||
My bad ||it was only a thousand years||
just to be safe cause idk what chapter they are first described but, full spoilers of the book --> : ||I found art of what the inquisitors look like because they're teasing the mistborn ttrpg and im not okay
Imagine this in the movie adaptation
like why is it STICKING OUT LIKE THAT IN THE BACK ||
again SPOILERS FOR THE PICTURES
lol this is not what I expected for the ||spikes. for some reason, i though the spikes only went through the center of the eyeball so they were narrow spikes (like you could still see the whites of the eyes)||

Hello everyone!
There are two weeks left of this BR! For those who haven’t finished the book yet, you have until 1 May to do so! :sparkles:
Finished: Raya, Alex, Manouk, Ravenclaw, Ulysses
Started: CAD, Inniea, Vetrina, Sirence, Trev, Sofia, Kel, Shuva, Tink (let me know if I missed you!)
At this point in the BR we'd love to hear whether you would be interested in a BR for book 2 (The Well of Ascension)! Let us know if you do! :heart:
I'd wanna do a BR for book 2!

ME TOO
yes!
yeah me too
44% not sure which chapter but it’s part 3 ||ugh this “im becoming a woman” shit is making me sick|| just found out it was ch 17
53% ||yayyy let’s have long in-scene dialogue dumps where we talk about the magic system
||
i've heard book 2 is a tad drier but why not, i'd be interested
i've heard book 2 is
a tad drier but why not, i'd
be interested
I want to do a whole series reread, so I'm in!
Do you guys host a VC chat at the end to discuss the BR?
I’d do book 2. I read the final empire last year but haven’t had a chance to start the well of ascension yet 🙂
we don't! since we need to ensure all participants posted enough discussion for each read, we need them posted as per our [Guidelines](#faq message)
I see. I guess this isn't for me, then. I don't really like interacting via text.
I hope everyone enjoys the book(s)! 📚
For those who were interested, the BR request is up!
#br-requests message
Just finished chapter 3 and that's exactly what I needed to get totally hooked
Ch 27: ||I thought atium was the eleventh metal? Gold is interesting but doesn't seem all that useful tbh. I kinda wonder if the eleventh metal was made for feruchemists to use instead of allomancers. Unsure how that would work though since as far as we know, feruchemists don't burn metals.||
Ch 28: ||Ooo things are getting spicy between Vin and Elend
||
Regarding your comment on ch 27: || I had the exact same haha ||
Ch 4: ||That’s a really interesting idea. I usually think of revolutions or governments changing as large, people-driven movements with multiple leaders, but it seems like it might be carried out by a small group of thieves or mercenaries, at least started by them. Maybe that’s what happens IRL too, we just don't know it.||
My hold expired and I won’t get it back in time for the end of the event. I may add my thoughts later
Starting this!!
Chapter 5: ||What a great action packed chapter. While reading the chapter, I had in my mind the fact that it will be adapted and I kept thinking about how they would showcase the powers especially the push-and-pull mechanics. Those were some great action sequences, I was trying to think if I know any character who uses powers like that for movement, but I can’t think of anyone. That’s a really unique system.
Prior to starting the book I thought the symbols would represent places or houses, but now I think they signify the metals (which is refreshing) — not totally sure yet. I mean, there are 8 symbols and 8 basic metals so.||
||Also, the passages at the beginning of each chapter feel connected. Someone is narrating them, right? But I can’t figure out who. They sound like a prophesied messiah figure, but I don’t think that it’s either Vin or Kelsier, atleast they don’t know it yet if they are the chosen one. Other than that I can only think of is the Lord Ruler, maybe he was a messiah turned bad. I hope he has a compelling backstory, till now he seems fascinating. Or maybe it's not a character from the book.🤷||
Ch30:
OOOOOOMMMMMMMGGGGGG
|| ELEND I LOATH THAT I LOVE YOU||
|| my mind is so clouded of what i just read that i will come back to this chapter again||
Ch31:
|| In a thousand years’ time, will I be remembered as the man who protected mankind from a powerful evil? Or, will I be remembered as a tyrant who arrogantly tried to make himself a legend?||
|| oh lord ruler, i want to know what your history is. Why do I symphatize with him? Why do I feel bad for his destiny?||
Ch32:
|| it's not like i didn't expect someone to Die but Marsh?||
|| so kelsier's plan was always to destroy the pits? Did i understand correctly? ||
Also || what do they mean with breaking someone? Torture until they speak?||
Chapter 6: ||well I guess I was correct, just few pages in and it says "He (the Lord Ruler) had saved them from the Deepness", so I guess he is the person on the passages at the beginning of chapters. I am just too exited to get that right 😄||
Prologue - ch 3 || ok I’m settling into the worldbuilding ok; I like how most of it is falling into place organically. I hope Camon fades out of this story cuz I don’t like him at all. I do like the partnership of Dockson and Kelsier as they make a good team. We should get a good understanding of the magic system as Vin learns about her powers and gains skill. Sucks that she’s been so abused in different ways by everyone. I hope she can still trust those who deserve to be trusted. I feel like she’s going to be the Chosen One to take down the whole system lol making this certainly a final empire. And I’m here for it||
Ch 4-5 || I am wondering about who is speaking in the chapter headings. Wondering if it’s the Lord Ruler dude, Kelsier or maybe Vin’s dad. Also it’s interesting that so much of this world is covered in ash, being a result of fire, and also mist which happens when moist air cools off. Expecting some explanations for both of these since they seem almost like opposites
lol it’s turning into a revenge heist
Ok his mode of transportation and his fighting style, plus the cape/cloak just makes me think of Magneto lmao It is cool that using the different metals gives different powers tho||
Ch 6-7 || given the state of our current political situation, I’m digging all this rebellion plotting
I do like how Vin is being included already as a valuable member of the group and I like the mentorship vibe that Kelsier is bringing. It’s sad to me how broken her ability to trust has become, and there’s such a focus of betrayal between these groups of people who are supposed to be able to … idk work together at the very least.
I’m interested to know more about Marsh and his situation prior to the current rebellion effort||
Final thoughts:
|| now this was a Rollercoaster i got myself into. Mr. Sanderson whatever you wrote it left me speechless and eager to read more. Kelsier's unknown planing, rashek taking over the final empire, reen's brother not being broken by the Inquisitors
Everything makes soo much sense. I wonder how sanderson created such a masterpiece without loosing the plot.||
|| i like that Kelsier died but had me pause for a second that he died in a wink by the lord ruler. Anyways GO ELEND GO. i knew i can Trust you. Also THANKS for not making me crazy that i sympathized with the logbook person aka the lord ruler since he wasn't the lord ruler||
I don't actually know what i should say. My emotions are everywhere and i still have to recycle what i just read and saw.
I am looking forward to read the second book with y'all
Yay! Good job on finishing
Ch 8 (end part 1) || I feel like I understand Vin pretty well, and I think it’s good that she’s getting exposed to a new set of ppl with a different view on right/wrong good/bad and maybe will leave some of the influence of her brother behind. (This book feels very YA to me, and I’m thinking we might have had it shelved there for a while with his other YA series)
Expecting a lot more societal worldbuilding to happen while she’s masquerading as a daughter of the minor house||
Ch 29: ||That map seemed a little too easy to get... I hope the Ministry isn't onto Marsh and the crew.||
Ch 30: ||Oh god, so many people saw Vin doing allomancy. That's probably gonna come back and bite her. ||
Ch 31: ||Haha, Vin is kinda right about Kelsier and the crew being more like noblemen than skaa. Vin and Kelsier's conversation on the roof was heartbreaking. And Vin can pierce copper clouds, wow! Maybe her dad really isn't the Lord Prelan and is someone who went on to become an Inquisitor. And aww, Elend is still being optimistic about Vin :3||
Part 1 finished:
||I liked Kelsier and Vin’s moments together last couple of chapters. They are very good for each other, Vin needs someone to look up to and Kelsier needs someone to care for, I hope their bond becomes stronger.
Kelsier says to his brother, “Humor is the only thing I’ve got left”, and it’s so true — often the most humorous person is the one who has lost the most. I hope some of his humor rubs off to Vin; she needs it. Her life has been hell, now that she is with the crew, I hope she learns to enjoy things a little. That was so sad when she asked Kelsier about his brother — if he beat him, if Kelsier ran away, it broke my heart, that’s how she imagines sibling relationships are.
oh, the Mistwraith — I had difficulty imagining it, so I googled it, and that is some terrifying creature.
I really liked the line Sazed says - “The right belief is like a good cloak. If it fits you well, it keeps you warm and safe. The wrong fit, however, can suffocate.” It sounds correct, but I couldn’t fully think how, I’ll ponder about it more later.||
|| I really like your description of/thoughts on Kelsier and Vin
||
Hold's finally here!! Hoping to start tomorrow
Ch 9-10 || I had a feeling that this was just going to be a training battle and that a lot of the next little section is going to be about Vin trying to fine tune her skills and abilities. I’m also kind of expecting her supposed parentage to not be real and for her to be kind of a hidden child like King Arthur or something. It makes sense that the Mistings would be pretty skilled at their one power than the Mistborn are with all 11. I’m curious what the last pairing will be. Ngl I could use that Soothing ability
I’m interested in all of these suppressed religions and how they could resurface if the Lord Ruler is overthrown. I liked the peaceful night one that Sazed tried to give to Vin lol||
Ch 11-13 || oh Camon is dead? Good.
I loved the ball scenes
and that was cool how Vin was able to convince Kelsier to train her (or else) lol. Atium seems pretty nifty too. I wonder what the 9th metal does
I’m going to like watching her get better at spying too, and figuring out all the noble dynamics. Figures that the Heir would be disenchanted by the family fortune/status||
|| The balls were so unexpected to me haha, but I loved them sm
||
YES same, I loved ||the "aristocracy" portion of the books and I hope there's some more "espionage" sections in book 2||
Ch 14-15 (end part 2) || ok wow, big chase scene. I’m kinda glad that Vin got to push some of her limits even tho she was injured in the process. These inquisitors do not play lol but I kinda figured she’d be ok, since it’s only 40% of the book so far. I thought she might get saved by the lordling (I can’t remember his name lol) but it makes more sense that it’d be Sazed. Sazed might be my fav character tbh
I think Kelsier needs to fine tune these plans better. I wonder if we’ll learn more about Mare and how she died||
Ch 32: ||No, not Marsh!
||
Ch 34: ||No, not Kelsier!
I kinda thought he was gonna die to the Inquisitor, so I didn't expect the Lord Ruler himself to kill him. And he killed him with just a slap too, damn.||
Ch 16-17 || oh nice, backstory for Sazed. Seems so sad, but I’m guessing he’s happy to be part of Kelsier’s crew if only for the variety
Oh! The chapter heading are from this book Sazed is translating! And it is the Lord Ruler (ngl I hate that this is the villain’s name- it’s kinda dumb)
I’m very curious how this world became so environmentally damaged, and what the Allomancers had to do with it. Did they even exist before everything fell apart? I don’t know how the plants survive without being green or how they can have fruit without flowers. But I hope it explains it eventually||
Ch 9-13:
||I am loving the chapter headings. It’s doing a great job of showing, with only one or two passages, how the narrator is getting paranoid and corrupted by his power and the prophecy over time.
I very much liked the religion talk between Kelsier and Sazed. It makes sense that there are so many religions, as the Lord Ruler actively destroys all others except his own. I think he fears them, and it has to do with the passion they were talking about — religion brings passion to people and the Lord Ruler fears that. There’s probably something to learn for Kelsier here — if he really wants a strong rebellion, he has to give people what religion brings to their life.||
I have a question. ||The Mistings — can they only use one metal, or a metal pair of related powers? I think it was mentioned that they can only use one, but to me it seems logical if they could use the pair. Because till now we don’t get users for the related metals — like there are Thugs who use metals to increase strength, but not yet Mistings that use the sensory enhancement power. Also, it seems to me that Yeden can use both of the emotional manipulation powers.||
||I am very curious about the ninth metal, we haven’t got any mention of it yet.
Kelsier is so good with Vin; every time he surpasses my expectation. And I think it’s because he cares and sees her like a kid, but doesn’t treat her like one. I know that in that world no kid is really a kid — they are essentially adults as soon as they can understand things, thrown into the brutal world — but still, I think even irl kids should be treated with that kind of respect, not shutting them, or acting like they don’t understand anything; make them understand please. I could just go on and on in that topic.||
||Now the part I didn’t like. I actually didn’t like the ball scene, mainly because of the introduction of Elend Venture, the Venture heir. I so dislike it — it’s such a cliche, character like him. I cringed through the whole interaction between him and Vin.
Everything about him is so cliche — big family’s heir, reads books in parties, charming, hides his heritage, empathetic towards the servants, don’t have any power. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate him, I would love to be his friend irl, but I don’t want him in this story😑 . I absolutely don’t like his and Vin’s interaction. I am watching an anime ‘Love Through A Prizem’ and it has the same character, that’s a dramatic romance anime, I am ok with it there, but please not in this story, it's just overdone at this point. I hope someone feels same as me.
I can clearly see where this could go: Vin and the boy like each other, and then either Elend joins/helps the crew or eventually betrays Vin — and I don’t like either outcome. I really hope it’s not what I think, that it brings something new to the story or doesn’t become a main plot point. I am so frustrated, otherwise the story is going so well. I am just praying now🤞||
Ch 18-20|| oh the tensions get thicker with all the social dynamics. Sucks that she feels like she can’t just be more herself with Elend, tho he’s clearly up to something as well
I liked this training session with Marsh too as it puts some other things into perspective about Kelsier and how reckless he seems to be able to be. The Allomancy stuff is an interesting “elemental” Magic as compared to other magic systems that connect to the natural world. Really want to know more about Mare tho lol||
Regarding your question || Mistings can use one of the metals. Early in the book it is displayed that Vin can use two metals, which is why Kelsier believes she is Mistborn. Since using more than one metal would mean you can use all ||
Yeahh, totally forgot about that. ||I guess Yeden only uses one of the emotion manipulation metal then.||
Ch 14 & 15: ||Sazed is such a mysterious character. What powers does he have? Did he face the Inquisitors while rescuing Vin? I’m so curious. I hope I won’t have to wait long for the answers.
Kelsier really needs to check his recklessness — not only for others’ sake, but for his own life too. He’s the leader of the plan. If he dies, most likely the whole plan gets scrapped.||
No worries!

Reading: CAD, Vetrina, Sirence, Trev, Sofia, Kel, Shuva, Tink, Lemondrop
Finished: Raya, Alex, Manouk, Ravenclaw, Ulysses, Inniea (Let me know if I mised you!)

My goal is to finish this sometime over my weekend (which just started)
I have started! Didn’t progress much as it’s been quite a busy weekend (plus being a Sanderson book, little progress seems A LOT because of the sheer volume) but I’m hoping to get through before the BR ends
enjoy!
added you to the list!
I thought I had left this 😭 sorry
I tried again but no idea if it worked
no worries! I'll take you off the manual list, and maybe @winter imp can check if you're off the pings etc.?
Ch 21-22 || I do think that Vin should have a better awareness than she seems to of the general experience of the skaa. This whole bedding and then murdering young women is horrific.
It’s interesting that Kelsier’s Allomancy was “awakened” from trauma but Vin’s is just seemly natural for her? Unless there’s trauma to be revealed still that we haven’t seen yet.
Kelsier is such a manipulator too and I don’t like the dishonesty game he’s playing with his partners over the army ||
Ch 23-24 || ooof another ball scene. I don’t think Vin should be trusting Elend this much, but I totally want her to take Shan down. She needs some humiliation
Ham’s teachings make sense, (and I’m kinda glad that I don’t have to read a sparring match lol) but oof their plans are maybe coming undone? Or has someone betrayed them?||
Ch 36-Epilogue: ||These chapters were really good and an epic conclusion to the book! I caught that the Lord Ruler was using feruchemy when he was old in the chamber, but I never guessed that he was really Rashek and not the writer of the logbook! And Marsh is an inquisitor now, omg! I love how Elend came to rescue Vin and how Vin wouldn't leave Sazed behind
||
Finished! I really liked this book, and I'm excited to continue the series!
Yay! Good job on finishing
Ch 25 (end of part 3) || OK all of that running around was crazy, but it’s good to see that Vin is able to keep up and use her strengths and not be underestimated by Kelsier. This final scene with the older man from the plantation was pretty rough though. I can see how it is going to serve as a spark for Kelsier to keep going, and keep building his army. Sucks that his current strategy has been revealed tho
I hope Ham is OK
||
Ch 26-27 || I finally get to meet our villain and what a nasty guy is. Dude is powerful tho and ruthless. I hope that Kelsier’s rallying speech proves to re-ignite or at least placate the concerns that the other men are having about his motivations. I knew that Vin would have auspicious parents, but I’m still waiting to see if that plays out as true, because I suspect she might be even more of an heir than that.
Burning gold sounds like it would be an interesting therapy technique lol comparing what could have been to what is
Hmmm I hope Marsh will be ok undercover like that. This regime definitely needs reform||
Ch 28-29 || young people always so idealistic and that’s also happening a bit here. I actually want Elend to be shown as a decent guy for her sake, but I feel like there’s an awful lot of underlying history and politics with his family of which we’re just not aware. He did spill some secrets to her though so those start to get leaked, he will know. She needs to be a bit more careful and she’s probably being as she navigates all of this.
Um. She just swallowed the back to Sazed’s earring? Ew. Also… if she doesn’t burn it, will it pass thru her system so she can return his power to him??
What if Vin has both kinds of power? Allomancy and Feruchemistry? I feel like there’s bound to be a connection between Sazed and Rashek somehow ||
Ch 30-31 || Vin victorious!! That was quite the battle with Shan. Not at all surprised that Vin felt she needed to protect and save Elend. Hope he doesn’t do something stupid to betray her
Getting twisty. Lol
That scene between Vin and Kelsier was touching. I want there to be more honesty between all of these characters tbh. And I want Elend’s dad to take a hard fall||
Ch 32-33 || oh no. Poor Marsh. I feel like Kelsier is going to blow up this mine, and I hope he can do it without sacrificing himself in the process
Oh wow. This is not going to end well is it? Someone else is definitely going to die but idk who.
The classism of this book is such a clear central theme, but I like how it’s playing with choices that the different groups are making||
Ch 34 (end of part 4) || omg that was so cinematic, like a MU or DC movie or smth. I figured Kelsier was not going to make it, because in the long run it needs to be Vin who is the ultimate champion, not the mentor. (This is exactly how I felt when Dumbledore died too)
But it is definitely sad. And I am glad that he defeated the Inquisitor, saved Elend and freed many of the prisoners. Dude died a hero ||
Ch 35-38 || welp, Kelsier was clearly not wrong about inspiring a movement. But yeah Vin, you go girl
I want to know the significance of the symbols at the beginnings of the chapters lol
Lord Ruler is essentially Emperor Palpatine lmaooo
Ok I knew Sazed was going to get involved somehow. But! I did NOT expect Marsh! Whoop!
I also had a feeling that Rashek was going to be important, but I didn’t expect him to be the bad guy. I’m very curious about what he means at the end and how it relates to the overall condition of the planet||
Not sure where this is going next for book 2, but will finish up the epilogue tomorrow!
Yay!! Almost done
Ch 16-20:
||I feel so stupid — I was so confused about Tineyes. I had noted it long ago and kept thinking I would get an explanation soon. I don’t think it was formally addressed, or maybe I just missed it. It was mentioned quite some time back regarding some people, and it’s so obvious now that it just means a tin user🤦. All this time I was thinking there was no mention of tin user Mistings — that’s why I thought maybe Mistings could use two metals
.
It was also very confusing for me to keep track of all the houses. I don’t think I remember or followed most of them. I have noted the house names, but I’m still a bit blurred about their connections. I’ll probably revisit that part later if needed.
It was really good getting some backstory of Kelsier and his wife, but I think I want more. The book keeps moving forward all the time, without really stopping to explore the past in depth, and even halfway through the book I still don’t feel very emotionally connected to the characters. I think that’s because there’s a bit of a lack of backstory — the characters do talk about their past, but it’s always very brief and incomplete.
The chapter headings are the best part for me so far — just short lines, but they give so much context about the Lord Ruler's character. I feel like we’ll understand a lot about him before he even properly enters the story. I’m waiting for his first real evil act.||
I’m glad it got cleared up
Epilogue || well there’s a lot that’s wrapped up here for sure with all of the characters and all the theories around how things could have progressed to this state. I kind of wonder what the title of the next book if it’s not going to be more of a prequel to give us the story of how the Lord Ruler took the power and what developed from there. Still wanna know a heck of a lot more about nature and how it ended up in this condition when it formally was so familiarly earth-like so I hope that’s explored more.
Vin and Elend are sweet though and it could obviously continue into their story too, and figuring out how to reform all the corruption inherent in the final empire||
Done!
Good job on finishing!
Ch 21 & 22:
||Kelsier just felt so surprising to me in the last chapter.
“Plots behind plots, plans beyond plans. There was always another secret.”
Whatever it is with his ego, or trying to build his aura, I didn’t think he was dishonest or secretive with his friends. Maybe a little, but that felt more like he himself didn’t fully know what he was going to do. But that part with Ham in the cavern felt straight up cruel, which was very surprising and unexpected. It almost feels like the story is trying to present Kelsier as the next Lord Ruler in the making, or at least opening up that possibility.||
||About Vin’s POV towards the aristocrats — her thinking that they are not that bad, or at least not all of them. I know she’s probably being a little naive about it (which feels slightly out of character for her, but she is 16 after all), and maybe getting a bit drawn toward that lifestyle.
But with the hatred Kelsier and Dockson (and the skaa in general) feel towards the aristocrats (which is totally justified), consider this — let’s say their revolution fully succeeds, and the skaa take control of the empire. Either they would have to eliminate them completely — which isn’t really possible — or the aristocrats would become the new lower class, hated by the skaa.
Now give it a few centuries, and the former aristocrats become the new lower class, with stories about how they were once closer to the ruler and had a great life. I might be going a bit out of context here, but I’m really fascinated by this concept — how previous oppressors become the oppressed, and the cycle continues — the philosophy behind it, and what the possible solution could be. Maybe Vin’s “naivety” is better than total hatred in this case 🤷♂️||
Finished till Part 3:
||Ch 25 heading —
“No man dies by my hand or command except that I wish there had been another way. Still, I kill them.”
I was thinking, how is that possible? I guess the chapter showed that — Kel didn’t order the attack, but the deaths of the army are kind of on him.
So the plan is gone. Don’t know what will happen in the upcoming chapters. At least the army part is finished for now, but they can still continue with the noble house conflict plan. Actually, now that Yeden is gone, Kel can take charge, and if they succeed, he could be the one to take control of the city. Is the final act of the series going to be Kel’s revolution succeeding and him taking control of the city/empire and turning evil — maybe going on a killing spree against all the aristocrats — and then Vin will have to stop him. Could happen, although I don’t think I want it to go that way.
I am sensing some rash action coming from Kel in the next chapters.||
Final thoughts || I thought this was a good opener for a series and I understand it’s also a good place to jump into Sanderson’s Cosmere universe in general. I liked the way we received a pretty organic introduction to the worldbuilding, and that it still has questions left unanswered for future volumes. I think this book did a pretty good job with pacing and having enough high-octane action with the character development to engage most readers. I liked Vin and Kelsier both, but as I said above, I was not surprised that Kelsier didn’t survive to the end, and I think the way he chose to become a martyr for the cause made complete sense. I’m resigned to the romance; it’s tropey but it is what it is. I want to understand more about why Vin is such a natural at these abilities and I hope that comes out. I think Sazed is my favorite character of all and I’m looking forward to having him more into vol. 2 as well. I’m wondering if book 2 will be a peek at the past tho given its title and the mysteries surrounding how the Lord Ruler (I still think that name is cringe) claimed the power||
Ch 26 & 27:
||Finally the ninth metal — and it’s gold, fascinating. Honestly, Vin got it better — seeing a better version of yourself would be much worse. I would go crazy thinking, where did I go wrong?
I’m sure the ninth metal will have an important role in the story — just wondering how.
Marsh is the GOAT. Putting himself in the most dangerous place, getting his face tattooed without hesitation, and he knows more than the actual obligators — respect
.
I think Kel and everyone are severely underestimating the situation. They’re saying that without the garrison army and with a chaotic city, they could take it with a couple thousand soldiers. But this is a magic world — they have people with powers.
First, the Inquisitors — there are so many of them. There were eight at the execution — you have to deal with them, they’re not going anywhere. Obviously the Lord Ruler won’t go down without a fight. And there are also other Mistborn — they have powers too. If Kel takes the city, the other Mistborn would try to take it for themselves. So far they’re kept in check only because of the Lord Ruler.
All these people with powers would definitely fight back. I don’t think Kel and Vin can handle all of them having the same abilities — unless Marsh finds some really good info, like kryptonite for the Inquisitors and other Mistborn. As I said the GOAT doing the most importent job.||
14% in
||I’m really enjoying this so far. It’s not everyday when a rebellion heist (or whatever this is) is so clearly laid out so early in a book. Kelsier and Vin are definitely quite interesting MCs so far and I’m sensing the beginnings of an interesting crew dynamics. One of the things I quite LOVE about Sanderson is the way he writes his characters and their dynamics—always fun to read. So far it reads a little less ambitious or grand compared to Stormlight Archives even though they’re clearly planning something almost impossible. Idk if it’s the writing or the less mythical heralds and gods and POVs sort of thing. Excited to see where we go from here though ||
I don't think I'd be able to finish this by tomorrow but I'll do my best
We can wait with the report for a few days longer! But that's only for people who already started before the end
I can definitely finish over the weekend. It’s my first weekend off of my volunteering stuff so I’ll get some time to read
Hope you enjoy the time off

Hello everyone!
We have reached the end of this BR! Thank you everyone for participating, this was my first time leading a BR and I had a lot of fun with you! :heart:
Finished: Raya, Alex, Manouk, Ravenclaw, Ulysses, Inniea, Vetrina, Lemondrop (let me know if I missed you!)
To finish up this BR, we would like to discuss some final questions with you! The questions with spoiler tags contain spoilers for the whole book!
- Would you like to read more of Sanderson’s work after finishing Mistborn? (For example… book two? :wink: #buddy-reads message)
- Full book spoilers! || If you were a Misting, to what Allomantic skill would you like to have access and why? ||
- Full book spoilers! || After learning of the Lord Ruler's identity, what do you make of his cryptic message? And do you see him as a villain, a tragic hero or somewhere inbetween? ||
- Full book spoilers! || Would you consider Kelsier’s death the ultimate sacrifice, or an egotistical move to become a ‘god’? ||
- Full book spoilers! || Which secondary character (e.g., Sazed, Dockson, or Marsh) had the most impact on you, and why? ||
Thank you again for participating!! :sparkles:
As Manouk already said, for those still reading we can wait a few days longer before handing in the final report. Let us know if you want to make use of that
- Yes

- || I'd feel bad about all the mental influences of zinc and brass, so I'd probably prefer a physical metal. Tin seems a bit overwhelming, but pewter seems quite useful in the regular things of life. So probably that one! ||
- || I suppose the Lord Ruler did a lot of things for the world that went unnoticed. The way it was done oppressed the skaa, but without the full perspective of the Lord Ruler it is hard to know his reasoning and if there was any other way. For that reason I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now and call him a tragic hero. I would love to learn more about this in book two, though. ||
- || It's so hard to tell what Kel is thinking
I can entirely imagine him planning this and knowing he will start a movement, but some part of me doesn't want to admit he knew he'd become a 'God'. Nonetheless, there were parts in the book where he felt egotistical. At first I thought he was going to become the new Lord Ruler, but in some way this is even more egotistical
. Since now he is dead, he cannot lead the crew anymore, the civilians have really high expectations of the crew now to bring about "Kell's will", while Kelsier is dead and cannot worry about it any longer. It does also really feel like a big stab in the back to Vin, imo. So... I find it more an egotistical move haha. || - || Purely impact-wise, definitely Marsh. The chapter about the torture room did something to my brain, that was absolutely terrible. My favorite secondary character was definitely Sazed, I just loved him so much. Both of them are the GOATs of this book tbh 🐐 ||
Thank you!
I’m hoping to make use of that and will try finishing asap
I'm at chapter 10 right now, I'll finish during the weekend 💜 thank you so much for waiting!
- yes
-|| probably pull or/and push just to reach things faster|| - || if i dismiss the part that rashek has killed the original lord ruler, i would say the lord ruler as a charactee is a tragisch hero. Dying before the profecy happened is sad but idk||
-|| i would say both? Since he did die to safe his friends but also being egoistic by fighting against an Inquisitor is just stupid|| - || Sazed:i like how his Tribe has so much knowledge and i would like to have something like that too. ||
This book was so much better than i ever expected. Thank you so much for this BR
Glad you liked it so much!
- yes please
- ||i forgot which metal it was, but i would like to be a thug. i have no strength at all||
-|| i think the darkness is the true villain of the series, and i think the lord ruler was doing something to keep it back, so worse is yet to come. right now, i see him as a villain, but idk maybe my opinion will change as the series progresses|| - ||well i like to see the best in people, so i'll say that it was a sacrifice, but honestly, the idea that he would be worshipped could have influenced him||
- ||i loved sazed, he always pulls through, vin would be dead many times over. he also seems like a great friend, and i want to hear his stories||
- Yes!
- ||Pewter because then I can do more and be less tired
|| - ||I assume he was continuously keeping the Deepness at bay. I view him more as a villain though because killing the original writer of the logbook mostly seems like a power grab at this point. Not to mention all of the oppression of the Skaa and Terris people (I think that he oppressed the Terris people/Keepers so hard so his true identity would remain secret).||
- ||I think it was more of a sacrifice than an ego thing. And I think the ego he had was more about being able to fight an Inquisitor or the Lord Ruler than becoming a god.||
- ||Sazed was my favorite side character. Everything I learn about him is so interesting
||
- might as well join for book 2!
- ||After reading the book, I kind of want to be a tineye so i can snoop 👀 .||
- ||I see him more as a villain who landed somewhere in between. I'm curious to see why his message means so I'm not sure what he's doing but he didn't deserve to kill the dude.||
- ||I think it started as an egotistical move to become God and he knew his death would be the ultimate sacrifice. ||
- ||Sazed! Dockson is a close second. I love Sazed and the different perspective he brought to the team as a Terrisman who does feruchemy. He was so caring of Vin and I think she really appreciated that. I also like Dockson because in the realm of thievery, admin work gets overlooked! Kelsier may be all the manpower but Dockson is the one that make sure it's "legal"||
Finished Part 1 earlier today
(I’d meant to spend all day reading today but had my plans hijacked
)
||I’m loving the pacing right now. Kel & Vin’s relationship really feels like a genuinely good mentor-mentee and like he’s one of the best mentors I’ve come across in fiction. Like the way he gently guides her every step of the way and has all his cool charms but working extra hard through Vin’s issues like so
A part of me feels worried for what the future has in store for him because such good characters don’t seem to last long. But it’s Sanderson so I think I’ll stay optimistic||
Until Ch.13
||Interests how it’s her first ball and she’s already caught someone’s eye. Could he be an actual love interest and help them overthrow Lord Ruler? Or is that too farfetched lol
All I see is they need all the help they can get||
||Nooooooooooooo
||
||Come ONNN? We’re not even HALFway through the book, this canNOT be happening
||
I'm currently at chapter 27, I will read the rest tomorrow and then post all my notes
I'll try to finish it tomorrow as well
Ch.19
||HOID!!! Also I wonder why he’s referred as Hoid and whether this series is the first time he’s referred to so or if other books did it first ||
I finished the book! I looked through the things I've written down and decided to just post all the main points here in this one message. So my thoughts about the whole book:
||I'm a sucker for the found family aspect, and I feel like it was done well here. I really liked the entire crew and got attached to them. Each of them had their own distinct personalities and even if there was some bickering, it was obvious that there was also care for each other. They all had something to offer to the group, they all had their own area in which they shined, whether it's in terms of reliability, offering feedback, doing research, giving moral support, or using Allomancy. Of course they're not perfect, but their circumstances were also so difficult and they all strived to make a better future for themselves. Sazed also deserves a separate mention, I think he's such a compelling character. ||
|| I can't really decide who's my favourite character, I liked so many of them. I really loved the way Kelsier mentored Vin and took her under his wing. He immediately treated Vin like an equal member of the crew, and through those experiences also shifted her worldview very considerably. He proves to Vin that she won't always be abandoned, that things can be different for her.Int the beginning, Vin was pretty much constantly haunted by her brother's voice saying how you can't trust anyone etc., but under Kelsier's guidance and as a part of the crew, Vin really blossomed. I also liked how, even though Kelsier is so influential, he didn't try to control or force her into anything. He gave her opportunities to leave, and it was up to her to continue. Kelsier has such traumatic things in his past and so much of his determination is based on that trauma and loss. I think he genuinely wanted to help create a better world for the Skaa, and it's admirable how he didn't lose sight of his plan or vision even if others questioned it (I can't blame them, the plan to overthrow the Empire and kill the Lord Ruler did sound absurd, just because it felt like such an enormous task). He's one of my favourite characters for sure, I loved his interactions with Vin and the other characters, him as a leader figure, as well as his absolute drive. I was very invested in him from the start to the finish, and his death and the letter he left for Vin made me want to yeet my tablet hard out the window. I'm not built for this kind of heartbreak||
||I certainly loved Kelsier, but I also really liked Vin! Like Sanderson's previous female characters I've read about, she's strong and independent, smart and resourceful. She has such a rough past as well, and it was beautiful to see her character arc, how she learned to trust and be vulnerable. She's also a complete badass, killing the Lord Ruler and everything and carrying Kelsier's mission to the end. This is not really a critique on Vin as a character, but more about Sanderson's writing: This is a big book, and I feel like there was some repetition. In the first third of the book, it was very heavily reinforced over and over again with every action how wary Vin was. She had every right to be, absolutely, but I have to admit that at some points I was like "I get it, she's wary and untrusting, you don't have to state it every 2 minutes"||
||Elend!! Let's just say the apple fell far from the tree in his case. His father is an asshole, but he's caring and loving. He loves Vin + he brings books to social gatherings. What's not to love? What I also love is that even though there's romance, it doesn't become central to the plot and overshadow everything else that's going on. It just exists naturally in the story and you can see Vin and his relationship develop, while the focus stays on the mission and everything else as well. ||
||The steel inquisitors are nightmare material, I'm so fascinated by them. I definitely want to learn more of them. Maybe I missed it when I was reading the book, but how do they come to be? Like how are they made?||
||Besides the chapters themselves, I also enjoyed reading the little paragraphs that each chapter starts with. At first, I was pretty convinced that it was like Kelsier's journal or something, then the Lord Ruler option. It's a nice little mystery to have, because it's kind of a separate storyline from the main thing going on. ||
||The magic system was interesting, I had a good time learning about it. Even though some parts were a bit slower, this definitely was an immersive book. I've found the same to be with Sanderson's other books, at a certain point you just want to binge read the rest of the book in one sitting. There were twists and action, I was entertained + as I mentioned, I genuinely liked the characters so it was lovely to be in their world. ||
I'll give this one 4 stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ and I'll see you lovelies in the BR for the next book 💗
Let me know if I have to provide more thoughts for the points
||The steel inquisitors are nightmare material, I'm so fascinated by them. I definitely want to learn more of them. Maybe I missed it when I was reading the book, but how do they come to be? Like how are they made?||
Now you made me curious too hahah. I don't remember that being mentioned anywhere in the book
I’m pretty sure the details on that weren’t mentioned indeed :)
Yay! Good job on finishing, glad you enjoyed it and that you are joining us for book 2
I’m still going slow but hoping to read a lot more tomorrow
Currently on Ch.22 and ||enjoying the lore and world-building
Also, vin realising she has actual friends now
Ugh, Sanderson is soo good at building relationships (wholesome platonic ones I mean)||
Finished till Part 4:
||This part had probably the best scenes of the book — the scene where Vin tells Kelsier and the crew that they are not truly skaa, and then her conversation with Kelsier. That was very emotional.
The last chapter was insane — what chaos and action. Not sure if Kel is dead. Marsh is confirmed dead though 😔. I wanted to see more of him, but alas.
I was reading this part in chunks, so I didn’t take many notes and probably forgetting things, but I’ll finish the rest of the story now.||
Finished Part 3 (I actually wrote this down early this morning and forgot to hit send, I’m almost done with Part 4 rn)
||Poor Vin’s really seems to be falling in love with Ellend. Although the romantic in me wants to believe Ellend’s one of the good ones and have some hope for them etc, the sceptic definitely agrees with Kel. Maaaaybe we’re too skeptic and the long term abuse has clouded all skaa vision but I know they need all the help they can get especially considering what’s happening ||
Finished, thoughts on Part 5:
||From the fight between Kel and the Inquisitor — or maybe even a little earlier, from the fight between Vin and Shan — then the emotional moment between Kel and Vin and up to the Lord Ruler’s death, that was the best stretch of the book for me, I was so tense this whole time. And what was the timeframe there, like two days, in just two days all of that happened. I actually didn’t like the book that much up to this point (I’ll try to write about that later), but this part was really good. It absolutely raised the book for me.
I didn’t think Kelsier would die in this book, but I love how his death was done. I’m mostly sure he is dead. I know Marsh was shown dead too and he wasn’t, and we weren’t shown Kel’s body directly, but the kandra used Kel’s body parts to turn into him, right? So I don’t think he can still be alive.
I have to mention — that was some clever shit from Vin. The way she prepared to fight the Inquisitor with the spiked arrows and metal scraps — she is impulsive but a genius one.
I think Vin is correct that the Lord Ruler was Rashek, who killed the writer of the logbook and stole the power, but in doing so probably learned something, or got the responsibility to keep some danger from destroying the planet. That’s probably what he means when he says he is keeping the world safe, and now that he is dead
, that's probably the plot of the next book. That was a really good twist.
I have mixed feelings about the book. I didn’t like many parts of it, but some things were really good — brilliant even — like this ending part. I think most readers here liked the book, so I’ll try to properly write about what I didn’t like in my final thoughts
. I mostly agree with the popular opinion on the little books that I have read, so I actually kind of like
that I probably have a slightly unpopular opinion on this one.||
Unpopular opinions are also always welcome!! Can't wait to hear your final thoughts
Done with Part 4!
||That heartfelt talk between Kel & Vin was so NEEEEDED!!! And Marsh
The way Kel just broke going and dealing with the pits and then ughhh, idk so many mixed feelings
I want Kel to survive this all but with all the warmth and like everything about him makes me feel like he’ll be a sacrificial lamb of a hero but ughhhhhhh, I don’t want him to
||
I should be done tonight, I’m like 90% done rn
Apologies for the wait
Done with part 5 and very near the end! I’ll share all my thoughts together cuz I can’t stop until I finish
Finished this earlier and then had to go get some stuff done and all
My overall thoughts:
||I LOVED this! I still don’t know how I feel about Kel really being the sacrificial hero like I generally don’t like it when that happens because my emotions get the better of me and I find it hard but Marsh being alive and actually completely infiltrating the Steel Inquisitors like that
That Sanderlanche at the end was so satisfying to me. Also, Elend for King! I mean it’s kinda sad that Vin’s the one who killed Rashek but like she’s only a young girl who definitely needs a lot of help & support as we’ve seen (and I LOVE that about Brandy Sandy, he doesn’t over exaggerate the things a 16 year old could do, like she’s always a 16 year old in my head with everything she does because of her characterisation) . I love that we ended this on such a sweet happy note because it’s really changed my mood up on how I felt about the book. Pretty bleak and dark otherwise and having a young character like Vin really made this into a well balanced sort of story. Idk if I’m making much sense, I definitely do need some time to sit with my thoughts but didn’t want to delay you guys anymore||
Giving this a 4.5!
Another point that I just have to mention is how ||Kel in his letter to Vin mentioned he’ll talk about her to Mare and how she’d always wanted a daughter and my waterworks just started right then because that was just SO SWEET like he was indirectly calling her his daughter
like really, my heart
Vin who went from being this unwanted child, always cautious, skeptical, and ever so fearful for her life transforming completely by the end where she finds TRUST and her own people! || sorry I’ve only been thinking of this book since finishing it yesterday and I have a LOT more thoughts but they just come in bursts lol
I just finished the book a few days ago and jumped right into The Well of Ascension. Really loved the book, but I do think I would have appreciated it more not coming off of the Way of Kings. That was my first Brandon Sanderson novel and I liked it so much I wanted to start the whole Cosmere series.
||I enjoy the different systems that Sanderson uses and the depth of thought he puts into them to make them coherent. Allomancy is a pretty cool idea and I appreciate how he wants the system to "make sense;" so that when a host of new metals comes up at the end of the novel, they all fit into place in a way that builds upon the basic tenets of the system and you don't need to make any big leaps that feel unjustified.
With that being said, I do have mixed feelings on the Lord Ruler and the secret to his power. Having Allomancy feed his Feruchemistry is a cool idea, but the end suffers a bit from how thin Feruchemistry was in this first book (I imagine that it is going to be explored more in the rest of the trilogy). The ending asked me to accept a lot very quickly. Allomancy had been built up carefully enough that I understood its logic, but Feruchemy still felt mysterious enough that Rashek’s immortality and power did not land quite as cleanly for me.
I think that is also why his defeat felt a little abrupt to me. I understand the logic: Vin removes the bracers/metalminds, and without them his body catches up with what he really is. But dramatically, there is something a little strange about this ancient, godlike figure surviving for a thousand years and then collapsing so completely once a kid who has only been training for months figures out the right thing to Pull on. It works mechanically, but emotionally I think I wanted a little more groundwork for why that was the key weakness and why no one else had ever really threatened it before.
Very fun book overall though. I'm excited to see where the next book takes things! ||

also, Sazed...||
