#The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Ch 25: ||Muttations
Are these actually made from the dead bodies of the other tributes, or do they just look like them? Either way morbid though!
Oof and there goes Cato, fighting those wolves! Ugh couldn't he just die faster, this is terrible
"Pity, not vengeance, sends my arrow flying into his skull." Yes, can imagine..
An announcement! Back to only one winner, yep of course it was fake.
"Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers' faces." Faking a double suicide will certainly do the trick, but they will NOT be happy with this act!||
Ch 26: ||The Games are over.. let the PTSS begin!
Hopefully they can save Peeta..
They fixed up Katniss aswell, it's crazy what they can do. Erasing all her scars? Insane.. "The Gamemakers wanted to alter you surgically." Good job Haymitch for stopping them!
Oof, she's in trouble for the act with the berries.. has to look as innocent as possible.
"But the Hunger Games are their weapon and you are not supposed to be able to defeat it."||
Ch 27: ||Putting up a convincing show, while you're so scared.. brutal tbh.
And having to watch and relive the entire games like this, also so so cruel!
"Of course, the previous victors don't have the Capitol looking for a way to destroy them." Hm can't be too sure of this of course, you just wouldn't know about it.
Haymitch keeping Katniss and Peeta apart.. I bet Katniss is right and they're being watched every second.
At least they survived the interview without saying anything stupid or provocative. Ceasar really seems to be helping there tbh.
Finally going home! Oof and Peeta only finding out now Katniss has been acting? I would've assumed he suspected this?||
Finished! ||I really loved rereading this after, I think, 10 years! It still hooks me in like the first time I read it. The idea behind the Hunger Games is so cruel and mean.. but also very entertaining and adventurous
The contrast between the people in the districts and the Capitol is crazy. It's easy to think they're shallow, but yeah they probably just don't know any better since this is how they're raised. I enjoy reading about every day life in the Seam, and everything around and in the games. The romance is not my cup of tea, but alright. The fact that Katniss goes from 'I don't need a man' to not being sure if she's more into Gale or Peeta is not something I enjoy, but so be it!
I think Cinna is one of my fave characters, he's so down to earth and kind even for being in the Capitol. President Snow is someone who just angers me so much, such an evil vicious snake.. but more about that in the rest of the trilogy

I have like 7 br's to finish this month.
Hopefully I can finish this book first today.
1 || I can understand Katniss`s perspective on buttercup, but on the other hand he gives what a lot of people could need. Emotional comfort (atleast to Primrose). I forgot how annoying Gale could be, running away would also be a bad idea. It would not suprise me if the their families would get punished. Surprised that the school is not mentioned more often, it is kind of nice not being thrown into a school setting for once. I kind of want to know what happened to the first victor of District 12
. I am honestly not surprised Primrose was chosen, but the odds of that happening are extremely slim.||
Good luck Iris
You want to see this months tbr?
Haha sure
2 ||Well Mama Mellark seems like a piece of work.
Effie`s cheerfullness is grating on my nerves and Haymitch is kind of relatable. I am kind of glad Gale is gonna feed them till Katniss hopefully returns. Also feeding your family at 12 is kind of rough. I hope her mother gets better during the books.||
3 ||Fascinating how people get nicer when you are basically guaranteed to die. Effie is quite rude to be honest. I thought she would have educated herself by now. I liked the pin in the movie, nice token of home.I am surprised they did not get re-feeding syndrome. It can be quite dangerous, but either the capitol has something for it or Suzanne Collins did not know.||
4 || I am glad Mama Everdeen seems to have basic functions. It`s really sad that Katniss had to learn so young, but I am also surprised not many others also do it. It would at least hold of starvation and I think If you asked kindly either of them might teach you something. Also surprised that Katniss did not injure herself more often and got taught by her mother about first aid. I know the chances of being chosen are slim, but personally as soon as I knew of the games I would try to learn useful stuff. Peeta is refreshingly kind and so nice. Katniss just feels kind of emo.||
||We casually created a flame that does not burn.||
||The comparison on what you would need to hunt to recreate the food is shocking.||
5|| I WANT THAT SHOWER. IT SEEMS LIKE HEAVEN. The rooms also seem fantastic, but I would not want to have it on the back of servants. I just want to pinch Peeta`s cheeks, he is so adorable.||
6 ||So that is who Avoxes are. That is a new kind of hell, serving your oppressors.||
7 ||Personally I would focus on survival, in the movie was a statistic and I think over half die not through fighting. Katniss is so 🌟 extra 🌟 . I am surprised no one did stuff like her before. Oh God, Rue is here. She feels like a little wood elf to me.||
8 ||IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A LOVE TRIANGLE. I would be fine with having Gale as a confidant and hunting partner. I am so sorry for all the yelling, this is just so typical. Katniss is refreshingly pessimistic, but not everyone is against her and she needs to realise that.||
9 ||I have the sudden urge to also get a restyling. Just without the make up. Also Peeta`s strategy was crystal clear and Katniss is not gonna be amused.
||
10 ||I like Cinna. He is so calm and collected. I would be way too nervous to sleep. Would better trained Players make a more fascinating Game? I was thinking if you give them some time maybe 2 weeks they could learn a significant amount of stuff, you could even livestream it.||
11 || Uff, half out on the first day. That is rough. The smartest strategy would probably to: learn to find water, gorge yourself before, run away as fast as you can, hide, learn a small long range weapon. Peeta is either a genius or a traitor. Katniss is reckless. I am suprised so many are out already.||
12 || Dehydration susks man, I bet the fire is the gamemakers fault.||
|| Are the tesserae to make sure people keep having babies?||
13 || Is this a bloody video game? ||
14 ||What drugged monstrosity did I just read? ||
15 || I want a story where Rue survives with Katniss, she probably won't but they are adorable together. Also you should not let Katniss make plans, this will not end well.||
19-20 || I am not a particular fan of romance. Suprised that peeta is still alive honestly. Atleast katniss has some medicinal knowledge.||
21 ||Thank you Thresh||
22-23 ||I kind of want to know more about foxface. Everyone is currently more interesting than them.||
24|| Rather fight in the sun and directly then wait. Katniss was right. I think some mutations are chasing Cato. Hopefully he is more exhausted then them.||
25|| I am surprised Cato`s armour is never mentioned again. Also good plan on his part, gotta admit. This is also not a healthy way to start a relationship. There is gonna be consequences for both winning.||
26 ||Wanting to do surgery without her consent is madness. I am growing to like Haymitch even more. Cinna is a genius, no questions asked.||
27 ||Caesar is doing what he can, I believe. Now I am even more convinced there is gonna be consequences.||
Done: || Suzanne Collins imagined a system that is almost perfect in it`s cruelty. I watched a video once on how genius as a punishment in general it is. The brainwashing of the Capitol citizens in scary to see, it seems delusional and the exact opposite to the districts. I read this series for the 2nd time now and the writing still manages to capture me and my imagination. My favorite person is Haymitch. No other person even came close. I am already getting excited for sunrise on the reaping, but gotta finish the next 3 books first. Almost forgot the difference between the books and the movies, but now I know again and the book is even scarier and more brutal.||
- ||The Capitol and how different the ways of life are.||
Finished thoughts (reread):
Finishing rereading The Hunger Games only makes me glad I picked it up again and that I decided to host this event in all honesty.
The timing is a little bit silly because it's so short notice for me to pick them all up again after Lemondrop so wonderfully decided to host them all just over a year ago. What's funny is going in, I thought I remembered everything clearly, but there were so many little moments I had forgotten that ended up hitting me harder this time around (not to mention with the new knowledge of what happens in the series as a whole).
||“Katniss, the girl who was on fire!”||
||Katniss especially feels more layered on a reread. The first time through, I mostly saw her as a tough, survival-driven heroine, but now I really noticed her insecurities and the way she constantly second-guesses the intentions of everyone around her. It makes sense ofc, she’s grown up in such a harsh environment but it gave me a lot more empathy for her character. She’s not just brave; she’s cautious, calculating, and deeply protective of the people she loves, even if she struggles to show it. Genuinely she's one of the finest YA heroines I've encountered and it mostly sucks because I know that I would have been really into her if I had gotten to these books when I was younger smh.||
||I also appreciated the worldbuilding more. Collins doesn’t waste words, but she still manages to make District 12 feel stark and oppressive while the Capitol is ridiculous and terrifying at the same time. Compared to what the situation is like during Songbirds and Snakes, I loved playing attention to how the Capitol manipulates people with image and spectacle alongside how the games have evolved. Highkey really rated tackling the books Songbirds + Snakes > The Hunger Games trilogy this time around. PAUSE FOR EFFIE LOVE - My favourite character in the entirety of the series LMAO||
||Even knowing how things would play out, the arena sequences were still incredibly tense. The pacing is just so tight- you’re always on edge, waiting for the next threat. Rue’s storyline in particular hit me like a gut punch, maybe even more than the first time, since I wasn’t just rushing through to “see what happens.” And Katniss and Peeta’s relationship felt more complicated on reread which was a lot of fun - I'm not really into the romance in this series much but the unsteady ground that their interactions are built on is so satisfying to watch. ||

This is the final wrap up message for The Hunger Games br / event!
Thank you again to everyone who participated, as mentioned in the main event room, it's going to take me a few days to get the reports in order so there's a little bit of wriggle room to get those final thoughts down!
For those who love questions...
-
||Katniss is often described as prickly and guarded. Do you find her likable? Does she need to be likable to carry the story?||
-
||Do you think Peeta is genuinely in love with Katniss, or is it part strategy? How about Katniss, where do you think her true feelings lie in this book?||
-
||How does Rue change Katniss during the Games? Do you think Katniss would have survived without her?||
Which character would you most want to be allied with in the arena, and why?
That's okay! We're still happy to have you here!!!
Our school is currently reading The Great Gatsby
1: ||She is very prickly, but let's be honest.. who isn't at 17
and with all the things she goes through, it's no wonder. I don't think she needs to be likable per se, but being relatable does help.||
2: ||I think for the most part Peeta's feelings were genuine, but they're also convenient for his strategy. Katniss seems to be very confused to me.. She seems to be drawn to the person who she needs most/needs her most at that particular moment.||
3: ||I think that the situation with Rue prevented her from getting cold hearted maybe. So she kept more of her humanity because of this.. that probably helped her to survive imo because she could show people mercy and they could give that back to her in stead of kill her.||
||1 I still found her quite likable. She does not need to be likable. 2. Right now I think she is still unsure. Peeta seems like a sweetheart. 3. I think she would have found some way. Rue made sure Katniss was not alone, even for a short while.||
- ||She's a conduit for events. Not the worst protagonist, but could've had more agency at times ngl.||
- Trilogy Spoilers ||At first, strategy. Then it develops as they win their Games and eventually more with how the rest of the series plays out.||
- ||She is the spark to Katniss' conduit. The light that brightens her flame of rebellion to peak performance. And Katniss would not have made it out without her, I'm sorry. Rue is how she even survived the Careers in the first place by hiding in the trees with her. She would be dead without that girl, and Rue dead without her for protection.||
- Sometimes she is likable and sometimes not. No she doesn't need to be likeable to carry the story.
- || Peeta did like Katniss, but Katniss was still trying to figure things out and I do not think Katniss liked Peeta at this point.||
3.|| Rue basically saved Katniss and Rue made Katniss a better person.||
I would've allied with Rue and I would've made Rue win.
