IRL im a professional therapist and counsellor and yes there is a lot of toxic behaviour in hodari, hes controlling and doesnt handle his emotions well, and yes hes just gaslighting and undermining his kid, but hes also a single dad and there is a trauma reaction there of "protect the headstrong kid from danger"
similarly while hassian is an absolute ass, hes also been emotionally and romatically traumatised by a previous relationship
also, tamala is a textbook narcissist

the important thing is to have at least one person you can be yourself with and share your burdens, be it a life partner, family member, or a therapist (seriously, people, talk to mental health professionals)
even social media interactions can be an outlet, although of course i do not recommend this, social media tends to be toxic af and is one of the biggest contributing factors to the current mental health epidemic we are seeing - restricting screen time is useful, but not nearly as useful as simply deleting tiktok, instagram, or facebook

I made a peculiar set of self-imposed rules to decide who could be my Shepp.
First of all: I wanted none I would've romanced; at that time I was set on Jel and Hassian, and planned Reth as Shepp. Until I found out that there's no actual limit to the romances in this game.
So, with the disaster cook (affectionate) to the personal romance roster, I kept on excluding more NPCs.
A Shepp is not just a mentor, but also some kind of family. With this in mind, I knew I could've excluded Sifuu, Tish and (albeit for more indirect reasons) Chayne.
By then I already knew enough of the other NPCs to know who to leave out as well:
Caleri has her hands already full with Kenyatta.
Hodari was another who seemed to have already too much going on in his life to add such big responsibility on him.
Delaila and badruu had their farm to tend to, which is definitely no easy job.
Jina has her hands full with being a scholar (to the point that she also says ||she feels relieved that you're reconsidering your Shepp choice, when you go talk to her and need to think it over||).
Elouisa seemed too much to handle for me, period.
Tamala was a huge AW HECK NOPE since the beginning, periodt.

In the end I threw everything outside the window and made a poll with who I thought would be a good candidate (I also dumped in a couple I was reconsidering).
Winner was Ashura.
The rest is history.

After you get to know her fully, she gives you suggestion that the villagers are using you.
It's about time you start using them. What better way to find a working solution than with trial and error.
(Comes at you with a reality check also and involving how Palia is really playing out.)
(What better way to solve a puzzle or maze than to have an Ai Program run several scenarios repeatedly.)
(So it can solve it with no problem or when it finds the right solution to place what's missing, back into place.)
