Fiber optic internet is a double edged sword BIG TIME. It's lower latency, and has less that can go wrong with it... But when it breaks it can be out for DAYS.

Fiber is literally everywhere, that's the fun part. It's just MOST companies use it to feed their areas, and it sends service to other mediums from there.

I work for a cable provider. We've been shifting more and more away from TV and more to internet. I'd be shocked if we don't end up fiber only and dropping TV in the next 10 years.

And MANY reasons for that thinking. One being the networks themselves are trying to force us to pay INSANE costs to provide channels, and it gets worse every time a contract is renewed... And another is also the networks, they're shifting away from broadcast TV and more to streaming TV.

Plus the whole thing is messed up here in the US, in terms of providing TV channels. Over half the networks are owned by two of the major providers, so they literally can charge WHATEVER they want to every other provider, making it hard and hard to keep the price of service down for the customers.

So for people paying for cable TV, it's not expensive because of the provider (Unless you have Comcast or Time Warner.)... It's because we're getting screwed.

Back in the original Counterstrike days, I was working for an ISP and we had a public server in our datacenter. From my work computer, it was cat5 to the wall and to server room across the room, and everyone else was coming in over their dial up or DSL connections. It was such an unfair advantage to have a team of five or so people with 1-2 pings in that era

And all the people "cutting the cable" and switching to Netflix and Hulu are to blame for content being pulled from those two for the 20 different streaming services now.

I somehow had a 5 ping on a Team Fortress 2 server in Chicago, living in Iowa. It was so silly how unfair it was at times.

This is a good example of how progresson (even if the end result is positive or better for a while. Streaming services has gone out of control) can really eff up a system before it actually improves it.

I imagine pirating will boom again soon if it hasn't already. Unless it never stopped booming.

We've had a few horror stories of some of the municipal fiber ISPs that spent ALL their money installing it, and hired 0 support at all.

Honestly, cable IN THE RIGHT AREA from the RIGHT ISP is just as good as fiber. Also working for the company and being buddies with people close to the maintenance techs helps. lol

I just wish the US wasn't so married to the asymmetrical speed model. Knowing how things work... We're stuck with it outside of fiber because it's too late.

Hopefully they don't announce the details as that's really not the public's concern, as long as they're investigating to make sure they didn't hire someone in good faith who had issues at a past company not disclosed that's really all on their internals. Hopefully they do learn from the mistakes other studios are facing now and create a thorough anti-harassment and anti-discriminatory policy, there are so many people who feel gross giving their money to companies with problematic leadership and it would suck to emotionally invest in a game only to see it not take off the ground as it could 😦

I've been a member of a guild that had that rule and we never had any infighting or petty drama because we didn't bring real life baggage into the video game, whether or not it's positive or negative or neutral.

It's best to try to cultivate a culture that doesn't give room for toxicity and drama to sprout in the first place.

You can avoid some toxicity by not bringing in irl things but I've seen a lot of drama in rp guilds which have nothing to do with irl. Sometimes it's jealousy or people feeling left out or people feeling pressured

Then it becomes personal bc upset people want to hurt others emotionally

The only way to ever remove it, is to not interact with others. Then again the term "toxic" is used pretty loosely these days. It used to be reserved for the worst kinds of behavior, not just people having bad days and being prickly
