Eh, i don't think that's weird at all. This way you can already get familiar with it and start fiddling around with it. At the very beginning of the planing process for a piece of clothing you don't need a sewing machine yet, and the most basic testing can also be done by hand sewing.

During my cancelled apprenticeship we did first testings with just huge stitches of like 1cm or more, just to hold the pieces barely together, iron them a bit to give them shape and hold them onto the mannequin to get a first impression.
Advantage of that is that opening up the stitches again is also easy.

Not specifically to Germany but to the European Continent. Russia first, then Ukrainian, where around 10.000 of them were released into the wild and i guess that's from where they started to spread.
