I think this is more of a situations where there nothing wrong with it either way and it has probably been normal for a long time, but there's been a long-standing picture painted that the expectation is to sleep in same room and something is wrong if one party sleeps elsewhere, and it's in later years the picture is starting to better match the reality that it isn't unheard of sleeping in separate rooms.

So it's not surprising that people get shocked even if either way is normal.

In online games servers typically only handle the technical side of things, such as what are the coordinates of other players on the map, what are the IDs of items in your inventory, stuff like that. All assets are client-side

That's one subject I have very little knowledge about. Even if I did though, I get a feeling it may well potentially have an atypical bandwidth costs (whether that is higher or lower I don't know). There are some weird things about what data is sent, when it is sent... and when potentially it is sent or requested multiple times. At the same time they seem to may be doing a bit of lossy compression at least the height location of players (which is a potential cause for other players to look like they are in the ground or sky when in fact they are not). I believe the chat is handled by Vivox servers if my memory serves me correctly, although no idea if they in turn run through aws... but that too adds a variable to the server cost.

no i mean if the images don't render, the ground textiles don't render as well, causing you to be able to go literally through the floor, while others are at ground level. When things don't load in on your end, it affects how you appear on the servers.

I haven't even sat down and looked at it so this is pure theoretical, but if for instance a game has deterministic physics then in theory the same physics that made you shoot up would be replicated on both server and client. Ok, done testing. Industrial has brighter light, and shines in a radius, but a shorter light distance. Homestead has softer light, directional profile, but has a larger reach.
