can't sell or trade with other players. Others can request things and you can gift them to them from the kindness of your heart, but there's no such payment involved. Anything you want to sell is either in the village at NPC shops or through your box at the entrance of the plot

It really does. I did a quick estimate a little while back for my library (when I thought all shelves could fit books). If I just fill it up, that's roughly 10 books per shelf, 5 shelves per bookshelf, 10 bookshelves in my library. So... 500 books if I fill it up.

And just in the conservatory, I've had to use multiple plants in order to cover up stuff where if I had just a single, proper green bush I could have done it.

they shouldve at LEAST waited for full release and optimized properly before even CONSIDERING putting it on console (like... yknow... they are with the other consoles)

this is a game in beta and mmos in beta generally optimize before a more widespread launch of their game. the game isnt optimized for switch nearly enough, hell i have a beefy computer than most people and my game STILL lags.

Unless we have access to core numbers, saying it was a good or bad decision to put it on switch is hard. Do we know how much of an influx of players the switch release has led to? If the amount of paying players make up for the cost of porting and maintenance? And with the financial situation the company was in, was this an absolutely necessary step to try and save the company from closure?

As much as I hate the decor limit and how having to optimize for something such as the switch (and potato PCs) also affects me as a PC player negatively, I can't automatically conclude that it was a bad decision. I'll be harsh on S6 for a lot of things, but not this one.

i'm a huge MMO nerd and have been observing MMO releases since i was very young. i'm saying that the choices made for the game now are not ones that long term developers like the ones that worked on the initials of Palia would have made. in the lifecycle of an MMO, you have alpha, closed beta, open beta and then the servers go down for the "final checks and balances" and to take on feedback to release the base game. expansions and updates then come with new areas, quality of life, and bug fixes. the game as it is now follows a weird mix of early access games and MMO betas, all whilst having released on a secondary platform they have to do extra work for in order to update on time with PC.

the reason why releasing [in beta] on both switch and PC at the same time, for this game, is a generally bad idea, is because it causes more frontloaded work of keeping both in parity with eachother whilst they still haven't finished basic, core features of the game. it makes optimization AND implementation more of a gruelling process - especially for such a small dev team.

I'm not gonna disagree with most of that. But fact is that a lot of bad decisions have been made along the way. I want to be careful with rumours here as I can't truly confirm things, but at least from my perspective there seems to have been some gross mismanagement. Again, personal opinion, can't truly confirm, etc.

That said, the company laid off a good chunk of their force. They were acquisitioned. This tends to be a good indicator they weren't necessarily doing financially well. Opening for the switch could be a gamble: More difficult maintenance right now while opening a new revenue stream. This could have been a desperation choice that they had to make because of prior bad decisions.

And also, as much as I hate saying this, the logic of polishing and fixing and all that stuff up in advance would imply it would be better for them to not have released on PC at all, and just go with switch alone for the beta. That would be among the lowest common denominators performance-wise, so targeting and polishing that first would be logical. If anything, the mistake wasn't not releasing to switch before polishing up the PC version, but perhaps targeting PC at all before they had it polished on the weakest platform.

honestly this is a fair point. they really should optimize for switch much more than they currently do - but the switch also has a lot of hardware and software fun stuff that can cause a lot of bugs. switch has a huge problem with memory leaks, and is just not a very well designed console. i can imagine that palia would likely work better on switch 2 whenever that thing releases, but in general i just think ps5 / xbox would handle it better with how intense the graphics are. if they had chosen a more simplistic art style, it couldve worked, but as it is the game was too ambitious. and yeah, i do believe it was a lot of gross mismanagement, that happens fairly often within the games industry.

These days finding a company that doesn't suffer mismanagement seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Too many suits who don't truly understand the market they are working in, and who keep overriding their employees that do understand. And honestly, while I may get a bit carried away and engaged in this discussion, I do think we agree on a bunch of points too.

From a technical perspective, I do think it would be better targeted to more powerful consoles with the ambitions they have, but I also think the game - even the current switch port despite its relatively weak hardware - should be able to have significantly better performance than what we see here. Particularly contrasting it to the the amount of performance and graphical fidelity a good many other games manage to squeeze out.

On the other hand, while I realize a Discord tends to only hold a fraction of a games' player base, seeing the kind of players this community consists of through my interactions in this Discord has made me think that the Switch is likely a good target audience. While there will always be overlaps this seems to share more audience with the kind of people who play Sims than play Space Marine 2. The ones who may only own a Switch, or even prefer the Switch to the PC they own.

At the end of the day, I'd say we just don't have enough info to make a solid conclusion. It'll boil down to personal opinion... which is what my take is in the end.

I partially agree, but at the same time both can potentially be done simultaneously.

One thing is that we don't know how much has already been made. The other assumption here would be that they have done an acceptable job on the backend setup. If you want to get your money's worth from having employees, what are artists gonna do while coders fix bugs? Put them to work making assets for the store.

They are using Unreal Engine; if they have done an okay job on the blueprint/inheritance system for the game then artists would be able to create assets with very minimal involvement by coders... just artists and management signing off on it and the pricing. Might have to have someone add a few entries to the databases for them but overall, again, this should be minimal.

As such, coders can keep doing bug fixes while they provide premium content in the meanwhile.

If you take a screenshot using steam (I think it's the F12 key), then it'll end up wherever steam stores screenshots (can't remember off the top of my head). If you use the camera/album functionality of the game (is K the default key?), then it ends up in that appdata location people have talked about. Hmm, I think it should be fine for Palia since the everything of note is stored on S6 servers instead of your local computers. Maybe configuration (like keybindings) might get erased.

If you cancel, click on your game in the Steam game list if you have to do that again to show the main steam screen for the game. Do you see this? If so, click on the "out of sync" part and it should try to sync again.

@unkempt bramble That plot of yours is so dang clean and consistent. When I saw the gazebo the first thing I noticed was the placement of the flowers around it. That's some real nitpicky work there... and I mean that in a good way. The hydrangea, pink rose and, err, can't remember what those pink and purple long ones are called, is such a good combo. The "spas" are beautiful. Both of them look good, although I have a soft spot for moonstruck.

I think we already talked about trees the other day, but stellar work there too. What have you anchored those pavers with? Pillars hidden in the trees? Love the look, and the regular candles were the right choice in my opinion seeing it in person. Was there a specific thought about which trees you placed which bugs on?

And is that a wedding venue? Maybe when trading arrives you can rent it out, 'cause that sure is a pretty one. 😄

Something about the interior makes me immediately think "yep, that combo is just what I imagined Fawn would go for". 😂 I'm not sure if that's just how the Capital Chic set is, but I'm surprised all the glitched together counters aren't z-fighting at all. For me that is just .

Haha, I relate to this. The amount of times I place something, go "hmm, that's a millimeter to the left... no one is gonna notice but me, but that's one person too many". Aesthetically I like the divider and plants more, but I do get what you mean. Seems like it would be too cramped to combine both the extra cabinet and the plant version. Hmm... still might not be enough space, and no idea if it would look good, but would an industrial shelf be too big to glitch into the overhead cabinet for a second row of storage?

The whole thing about non-responsive people getting salty when you've waited and waited and even given last calls... urh, yeah, it's frustrating. And yes, it can be annoying for some to deal with typing on switch, but the people waiting have lives too. Does it suck and is a tad bit rude when someone shows up to a grove and just starts chopping and 6 people stand there and say "wait, people are on their way"? Yep. Is it illegal? Nope. Totally within the rules of the game. If someone doesn't want to deal with that person again, block to increase likelihood of not dealing with that again.
