#Camera Advice

Ah ok
No they'll accept most pans assuming the plane isn't
Yknow
Blurry
The current latest photo is a pan
oh
My most viewed is a pan lol
N8762Q. Boeing 737-8 MAX. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!
i mean...does that count as a pan...
1/40 for me
How wouldn’t it?
should i get a canon r50 with a 55-210mm lens for planespotting at around 300ish metres?
No
This is gonna be super specific, couldn't find any info online.
So I have this issue with my EOS 6D that whenever i turn it on it won't turn on unless I push it hard and it turns off immediately when I rise it into a horizontal position. It displays a message "cannot communicate with battery" sometimes but not always. Anyone know how to fix this?
Makes photographing planes basically impossible cuz it literally turns on anytime I move it a bit up
I've blown dust off the battery and it doesn't display the message anymore but it still won't work
Buy a new battery and try that
If that doesn't work, start shopping for a not canon camera
what would you recommend i get at around 1450aud then
I don’t know I’m just being a twit
u ok with used gear?
what lens mount?
Idk my most used lens is a Sigma 100-400 which has options for most popular mounts
I know they do L mounts for sure
That’s supreme glass
that means you have to but a new lens if you wanna switch mounts i think, i cold be wrong
ayo?
i think sir is looking for a nikon f mount body, idk what hes looking for
which goob
this goob
then what are u trying to buy get?
I’m not trying to get anything?
oh not u
this guy
lmao
ok so am i actually needed or what
i wouldn't mind upgrading but im broke
i dont think so
Magnasonic FS50 Film and Slide Scanner
https://medford.craigslist.org/pho/d/medford-magnasonic-fs50-film-and-slide/7719701569.html
Do this be good?
22mp
@glad juniper
get a plustek if you can
the really cheap scanners are mostly webcams and a backlight
Ooh
thats why they're so cheap lol
thats the size of the film
lol
Bleeeeh 300$
well the more you spend on a scanner the better results you'll get
That seems to be the case for everything
Maybe besides cars
Ooo
remember, my scanner was only retailing for 2k new
And you found it in a dumpster or something
and it scans like this
Ooo
Better than nothing
nah i'm saying the more money you spend the better results you'll get but the quality of the results are similar to the point where it doesn't matter
at least the higher up you go
Ooh ok
a 30$ scanner and a 300$ scanner will be vastly different
but a 1k and a 2k scanner won't be
at least insofar as the results are concerned
not bad
Yeah that happens lmao
Just be glad your not shopping for another film camera
But if you are I do have some recommendations
yet
gonna pick up some karmir 160
it looks sick
all ive got now is ultra max and some realllllly old tri X
better than harman pheonix
yeah idk
i like it tho
altho some of the cine stills are good too
huh yeah
I mean you don't have to shoot it correctly but it looks really weird
I've got a roll of Phoenix in my fridge lol
He just chillin in there
from what i remember i think that cam might've had a light leak
i have some B&W tri X from liek the 70s
Based
should make for some cool photos if its not ruined
what should i get for plane spotting - canon r50 or fuji xs20. canon with 55-210mm lens and fuji with the 50-230mm lens.
xs20 and its not even a question
though i'd avoid fuji entirely for spotting, the lack of telephoto options really starts to suck
how does bro have a xs20 😭
i don't
i mean in all fairness if your gonna drop 1300 bucks on the xs20 then get a used z7, the ftz and some cheap f mount glass instead
nah r7
same
the only time I have issues with the lens is when its over exposed
it gets very soft
that might be camera tho
here's 10mp
not horrible but noticeable
mega pickles really don't matter
could be discord
mega pickle
and here's 16
the only real gripe i have with my camera is low light
yeah thats normal lmao
true
nothin you can really do about it
yeah
how much they payin you
idk its my dads company
ngl most my pics are pretty shit
im not good and buildings evidently
and it was backlit
its a learnin experience
😍 🤩
y'know a big muddy puddle in the foreground of a picture for a firm that does water and drainage stuff might not be an amazing idea
well its not in the building so its not that bad right?
i've always struggled with buildings too tbh
except for like,
this one pic
literally just this one pic lmao
doesn't help when there's no buildings and i can't go in the site because i don't have PPE
lmao yeah thats true
anyways i'm just gonna stick with planes, landscape and maybe portraiture
i think these are just going on website/flyers so not horrid
as well as real estate photog pays, its just not for me
although it would give me a really good excuse to buy an ultrawide
yeah that tends to happen lol
that just looks like an export issue
nah thats just a screenshot outta LR
ah
also maybe try and clone out the flags in the foreground
yeah thats raw
goofy
i think my camera gave up cuz some of these are so shit for no reason
like how shit
shoot me a raw, i'm curious now
im i shooting in JPG or somethin jeez
i mean it is shot at 5.6
fak it is?
huh i thought i shot higher than that
i might go out tomorrow morning when light is better and try again
worth a shot
although id like to use a 24-70 but that's in Eugene
it should at least sharpen up the edges
i may not be getting paid much lol
its something to put on your portfolio
which is incredibly helpful if you want to keep doing photog for money
the other thing i've heard for real estate/building photog is bracketing
so you don't have to do much work in post, if any
hmm yeah
man i coulda sworn i did at least f16
i mean if you make the photo small its not bad
hmm
theres not really any tutorials on how to shoot this stuff
its mostly interior iirc
yeah and like skyscrapers
Yeah
just gonna take practice
Yep
what are the export sizes?
i think both of those are in full
one might be small
just cuz im sending it in discord and its not final
fixed the orangy stuff on the bottom
the flare?
yeah
masked and dropped saturation and upped warmth
is there a better way?
if only I could make the porta potty go away
not really lol
just probably use a lens hood next time
ah
that bit
honestly i'm surprised it was that soft on the edges
but ultrawides will do that
yeah im not hugely impressed with it
neither am i tbh
it does take good photos occasionally
stopped down to 8 its probably reasonably sharp
thats reasonably sharp
yeah its not horrid
i'd be curious to see how it does on a test chart
and there's not a bunch of edge detail to begin with lol
yeah a uv filter doesn't affect the IQ like that
yikes
1/1000 too
well ig the good news is you won't need the lens for spotting
i probably would
500$ is pretty good too
just on the basis that whenever you do eventually jump to ff you'll need a wide lens
and you can still shoot it in the now
5.6 at 35mm
i'd pick it up if i had the moeny
this is why i'm shopping around for an ultrawide lol
i can use it now, on film, and on Z
whenever i get there
i will say this lens is good for street and portait
yeah ultrawides are really nice for street
yeah thats nice
nah what you need is the 24-105 and the 100-400
its also a really useful focal distance
my 35-105 was my baby till i replaced it lol
lol
there's the 24-120
sharp as a knife
don't get me wrong, the 35-105 still hangs with the best
god this 16-35 is an actaul brick
lmao
i shot most of that with my olympus
i think i got some really nice shots with the lighting that day
hopefully the ultra max green doesn't get me
might go halvzies with a freind
that would also be a good idea
he shoots way more film than me currently
i think he has to ME supers for some reason
based
i might be getting rid of my pentax, if you want another film cam lmk
which pentax?
K1000
does it have metal or plastic internals or metal?
nice
shame
i tried to buy her 6d but she said no
grandpa gave it to her
with the 24-105
he upgraded to alpha i think
Maybe i go to the source
lol
how i got the 550
guess that was my moms
but grandpas first
camera hand me down chain
true
i don't think anyone actually buys their first camera
definitely not new at least
@glad juniper how does the z5 compare to the xs-20? In my country I can get it for slightly cheaper with a lens then the xs-20 without a lens.
Also the z7 is like 3000aud used where I am and my budget is 2000aud
this is the biggest reason why i'd buy the z5 over the xs20
the massive sensor size different
meaning way way way better low light perfomance
plus with the ftz adapter you can buy a whole bunch of "old" lenses and use them on the Z5 any day of the week
you'll also have better ergo with the 5
nikon ergos bug me
i tried one in taiwan and it always felt like i was gonna drop it
its very nice
but the position of the shutter button is odd
yeah but canons got the fucked up "top wheel" thing
tf
like to cahnge shutter
are you left eye dominate or something
no
the wheel on top in the rigth corner is shutter right
yeah
then wheres the button for apature?
like how do u hold the apature button and move the wheel
weird
*goated
nah
one to change both is nice
with just a button to interchage
hey at least its not sony with the ap being the navigation wheel
Having to press an extra button to do something is dumb
nah less stuff that could break
Just have two wheels doin different things and make the button do something else
i do like how the new Nikons look tho
agreed
New canons are nice too
they're ok
I travel quite a bit, is the z5 still at manageable size? And if you know, what would the video, af and IS be like between the z5 and xs20
depends on what "manageable" means to you
i pack an F5 around
and thats 1.2kgs of camera
this may help
it shows sizes
Could fit in a backpack and not be to heavy
then again we prioritize cam over otherstuff
well that and you aren't doing much photog if the camera is in a bag
i keep forgetting you've got an oly
mhmm
it has ZERO ergo tho lol
i need a strap in case i drop it
i do shoot the brick and i do like the brick
but brick is not good if brick is broken brick
fair lmao
ive just been switching the strap from my canon to it lol
doesn't help when i use both
and my canon one is wearing thru
Behold
rectangle
The rare and elusive "maus owns a canon"
whoaaaa
wait
i just realized lol
hows the whole spotting on film ting going
iirc you had something like 900mm
strung up on the scanner rn lmao
ofc
w
do u have a seprate film acc?
nope
oh
i haven't posted anything to ig yet lmao
i'm thinking about it tbh
rn ive just been using my private acc
lmao
lol
the only issue with a photog acc is that i shoot even less non plane things so i'd post even less
and thats sayin something
id shoot more buti dont have enough time
yeah same
plus there's just nothing interesting to shoot around here tbh
at least not until the spring
or at the very least, green
yeah things are starting too green up here
faster than we are
yeah lol
i'm also so burning like, 2 or 3 rolls when i go back to la grande
you should come say hi then
nah i'm not heading to central oregon this time
i've got adult things to do here in co
i'll only be back for a week or so
child
time for adult things
mhmm
gonna see if million air will hire me
nice
i already knwo one guy there
rogue.v.jet on IG
MFR spotting community has grown considerably
or its always been this large and youre just now getting in on it
nah, JB just bought a camera, rogue v jet just bought a camera, scott guy moved recently and tim
oh lmao
all of a sudden everyone buys camera lol
Oh oh
Not as bad as the plane that nose dived into the Chevy dealership tho
How do i edit photos without it being over edited and looking shit
first off you wanna edit it without overediting it
One of these is "overedited" and the other isn't
is the nikon p600 any good for spotting?
130$/200 aud budget
what are good canon spotting cameras?
Any of the ones that say "nikon" on them
Anyone got some good camera bodies that I can pick up used for under 500?
In GBP.
the more i shoot this thing the more i love it
Any recommendations then? Need a lens for it aswell.
In GBP of course.
you opposed to buying used?
and do you have a brand preference
No specific preference. I can buy used so long that it isn't in bad condition
dslr or mirrorless
its 588 but eh
next brand then
but it'd be the worst out of the 3 tbh
https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/canon-eos-70d/sku-2428590
you could also spring for a 70D over the 5Dii
the 5Dii is ff so it's got a larger sensor area but its a year or two older
idk what sorta tradeoff that'd mean for you
Is there any in particular that you would recommend? + Other than there being no mirror, what is the main difference between dslr and mirrorless?
Mirrorless is newer and therefore more expensive
I'd personally buy the nikon but a lot of people will vouch for the 5Dii and the 70D
Nikon has better legacy glass options, meaning you can buy vintage lenses from the 80s and they'll work just fine
Would you by any chance have an opinion on the M50 II or the r100?
Canons M series cams are dead
Avoid them
And the r100 suffers from "not enough tele options for a budget"
Not really
Fuji has some old ones but again, you'd still need to spend another 500 bucks on a lens
Maybe a first gen sony A7 or A7 but same issue as the fujis
No lenses
At least nothin cheap
Right, quick question, with dslr's, do they show exactly what you're shooting + settings on the screen? Like a EVF
(how it will come out)
Kinda? Dslrs have ovfs, meaning they see exactly what the lens is seeing
They've got settings overlay but they won't show you how the pic will necessarily turn out
Evfs do the same thing but display sensor readout data with the same settings overlay
You'll see what the camera sees but the pic might be different
All cameras are like that
And ofc if/how you process your photos will change how they turn out
Hate to nag but do you know anything about the Nikon z50
Been scrolling through mpb and it caught my eye
A entry level Mirrorless camera
APSC crop sensor
No image stabilization and poor battery life
Maus will have more to say
Battery life doesn't mean shit lmao
Anyways the Z5 is *fine*
The same 20.9mp sensor from the D500/7500
Solidly ok low light perf, z mount so you get some wonderful lenses plus the ftz for adapting
Quite small with poor ergo tho
I hear the d7200 is heavy though
All cameras will be heavy when you stick a big telephoto lens on it
Not exactly I don't think
I think it's specs are a little better besides ISO
Kinda yeah
And the r100, yeah
What's difference between 100 and 50?
But its got the "cheap body expensive lenses" problem
EF-RF adapter
The 50 is geared towards video
Oh 🤢
Yeah
Same sensor so you aren't missing much
The most based website on earth
But yeah it's basically the same camera just without a video limiter
And canon
Canon W
cameraaaa
Now on my last stage of comparing these cameras, what would you say is the best between the d7200 and the 77d?
maybe even the 250d
Looking to use it for a bit of wildlife photography aswell
Ew no
Embrace the roots of photography
Once you shoot film you'll understand
Maybe so
Just bought a Nikon D5500 With an AF-P 70-300 VR, ready for spotting
Decided I would leave a bit of money for accessories like a camera bag or what not
should i upgrade to a mirrorless camera or get a better Canon DSLR
currently have the 200D II
Mausie bbg there’re questions
Oh so there is
That's not been looked after. Is it a mark 1 as you can pick up a good or so condition for around 150-300
Look on sites like cex or mpb they have it in stock
Getting my film developed @glad juniper
Should be ready in a few days
14$ for dev and scan with student discount
fingers crossed they don't cook your scans
if you shot by the meter you'll be fine
Om-10
tf were you doing then
I need to buy the manual adapter
what
Om-10 thing
I get to control ISO, and Aperture
you got sad controls
That's my exact setup wtf
well it is just a 50 1.8
Time to shoot some tri-x from 1977 and see what happens 💀
No it was never stored in a fridge for the majority of that
don't forget to push
sorry i meant pull
expired film should be shot ~1 stop for every decade
ish
unless its frozen
Guess imma have to point this at the sun
F1.8
or do long exposures in the day
Well it's getting to be summer
Also I've loaded it and wound it a few times to the S goes away
Show I wind it more?
Ok
just make sure to change the meter and tell the lab its been pulled to 25
Change the meter?
yeah
Uhhhhh
set the iso dial to the right number
then you're fine
Ok
I need a sticky note
And somehow I can't find anything
I wish my camera had the little slot to put the end of the box in
My d5500 has came in and I'm not too sure if it's in good condition how do I check it?
uh shoot it
And make sure all the buttons and dials, button and dial
yep
Hope nothing falls off 💀
Id tape it but I think it'll mess with the "leather"
it'll be fine
Tripod will be my friend for once
Tripod in direct sun 💯
id need a meter to right?
that might also be helpful
ill get one next time im at the camera shop
its a good investment
ofc it'll be 2 weeks before im back in eugene
since southern Oregon hates photographers apparently
L
✨amazon✨
anyways when are you gonna get some more om glass
when i have monee
This is the excellent standard wide lens for the OM system. It is amazingly compact, with smooth focusing and great glass. It is in excellent condition with light wear and works perfectly. The glass is clean and scratch-free with no haze, fungus, nor other issues. The focus is smooth and the aperture is dry and snappy.
28mm
or the 35 2.8
for an as is i wouldn't
its a cheap paper weight
pretty much
35-70mm could be fun
yeah i'd definitely get one
it might be a shitty weird brand like access but it'll be 10 bucks soooo
might as well right
its sigma
huh
its a one touch
you zoom by pushing or pulling the front and focusing by twisting
its actually quite nice if its done right
the 50 prime is fun tho
50s are fun but become kinda useless after a while
yeah
yep
you can never have too many lenses lol
i only have 3 lol
ones not really mine
im thinking about picking up a 90D, a 70-200 and a 85 prime from another spotter here when i get a job
he wanted 1450 total
What if it goes through a TSA scanner?
eat it
Wouldn’t that not be good for me?
Mmmm 70-300
Bought from the cex store
are the scans cooked or nah
Idk I'll get them tomorrow
new lens hood arrived today
thats late
well i had to wait for my mom to give them to me since i was at my dads
lmao
i noticed that too
maybe only when it was angled in the sun?
good idea
Endoscopy 💯
theres like a very slight light leaky look
got some interesting stuff here
💀
lmao
im not entirely sure how i managed that
Meh
(I use a kit lens and it’s wide angle for 70-300)
Oh oops ping
Sorry
How do you tell if the contrast is good/bad?
I mean just by looking at it and by eye
Just make it look natural or as your eyes would've seen it as
I ask because Jetphotos didn’t like the contrast on that
And that’s exactly what I did
Did they say too much or to little
It looks a little low imo
They don’t tell you
They say too much/too little
What cameras do you suggest?
That's a very very broad question
To help narrow it down:
What are you wanting to shoot
What's your budget
Brand loyalty (if you have one)
If none I'd recommend the ARRI ALEXA SXT Plus Camera Body
Very reasonably priced and very high quality
@winged oriole we get 10
i will do inexplicable things if you get 10
Perhaps invest more in a lens than a camera. Of course get a camera that will work well with that lens
I'm sure Maus will have a say
Does anyone know a camera similar to the d7200 that has a flip screen?
No specific brand
Nikon d7500
80d
D7500 seems to be double the price. I've found a 77d for the same price and what are the opinions on it?
don't forget lens budget
Its basically double the camera of the 7200
One less card slot but that doesn't really matter
Don't worry, I have a lens in mind for my budget
What do you mean by 'Double'?
Cheap enough
Right I take that back, I had originally had the 55-250mm IS II in mind but I've only just realised that it isn't too great, any similar but with better spec?
I MIGHT lock in and get an AX43
A whole fleet of AH64E Apaches, wildcats and Chinooks came flying past me yesterday
Taking off from Wattisham airfield departing to Finland for the largest NATO training since the cold war
Should be top tracked on flight radar
Looking at the 70d now, weren't they're problems with Autofocus or something?
Bro imagine going spotting with this
Ah to be a rich retired guy
already has a R5 and 500mm prime, 90D + 70-200, & 6D2 + 100-400
The most expensive lens in the world is the Leica Apo-Telyt-R 1600mm F/5.6 for $2 million. It was customized for Sheikh Saud bin Mohammed Al Thani, a great lover of nature shots. The Sheikh even built a special 4x4 SUV for lens transportation and field use.
I would think he had some sort of job in photography
Especially if he is "getting an r7 to try out"
nah hes a machine shop owner
business person
Sounds good
now we're cookin with bacon grease
Ok
Bro just acknowledged the statement
Okay
Is an CANON EOS 250D + 18-55mm DC III + 75-300mm DC III good for plane spotting and contrail spotting?
Only if it says Nikon on it
Im looking for serious advice.
Completely depends
Do you have experience with using cameras?
And are you buying the 18-55 separately?
No
Why not? And what would you advise?
For contrail spotting?
Nothing
Don't do it
You'd need a nice bit 6in dob scope to start
And a mount
Then the camera
And if you wanted to do it handheld, you're looking at buying lenses that start in the neighborhood of 7k usd
But for plane spotting is it good?
And that probably still won't be enough
Are you going to the airport and spotting or are you doing the sad and contrail spotting
No to the airport
Canons 75-300 is trash
Anyone who's ever used one will tell you that
The 70-300 is significantly better
But both will "work fine" at the airport
Depends on how far away you are ofc
But I'd say that the 70-300 range will cover about 80% of an airport
Sorry I meant 70-300mm so that is good?
I mean it's a rebel, it's nothing amazing but you can still use it and take good pics
Like a solid 6.5/10 really
If you wanted a nice camera get a 90D or something
Ok
its only really worth its weight in plastic
Not even
Behold, my shit
I'm gonna beat you up, and replace it all with canon gear
no thats stupid and cringe
although i would take the canon 80-200 2.8l over the nikon simply cause it has a higher resale value
any of y'all got some cheap nikon travel lenses?
are you looking for the most useful range or just the best travel lens
cause there's a plethora of "wide range" zooms out there that are pretty shit in terms of iq
I need bigger bag
I can barely fit everything
Not including film
I bought for 15$ tho is idrc
Fits charger, 2 lens, SD reader and other bits and Bob's
I can kinda make the film camera fit
On top of 16-35
Real backpack 😭
💀
ngl now that i've got an 80-200 that 200-500 is looking way more tempting
just toss it in your carry on and ask for a hand check at all the scanners
K
I actually don't have any film rn
Only this ancient tri X
I haven't shot it yet
you should
I wanna get another lens too
For the film
I'm not gonna put a ton of energy in this roll since idk if it's even good
buy some weird 4th party offbrand lens
they're cheap
It's either gonna be 1900$ or 12$
well no
Macro would be wild
om glass is kinda dead
since the modern oly is m43
Yea
I think last time I was there they had a whole tub of OM lens they were sorting and pricing
go back and buy more
