D11 have no plans to abandon Old Gen, there is content still planned and being released, until we hit the end of that cycle we are not being held back.

Brand new games are still releasing on Old Gen, the Consoles are still being heavily supported.

We are getting new content, that is moving forward, even if it was Current Gen exclusive the game would still require heavy work and optimisation, it would not be huge updates every month.

Graphics are already upscaled on Current Gen, performance would still be a huge issue, Xbox Series S Consoles are not good enough for Rust PC, it's not the magical cure and would not result in instant updates

You also seem to forget COVID, huge COL implications and Console shortages, D11 sees the data of players on what Console, they continue to support Old Gen because it's a large % of the playerbase and it's up to them when they drop.

even if that was the case you do realize that under that logic there'd be more new gen players by now but in reality there isn't whether you could download games from previous console aka backward compatibility doesn't mean there's more on new gen because of 2 main reasons 1 is money not everyone has the money and 2 why would they get a new console when the one they have works perfectly fine if taken care of

afterall only reason I got a new gen was for whenever community servers would come out which I've had the series X for 2 years now and I still play rust on both old gen and new gen as I have no difference in experience other than load times into the server itself

and the screen being brighter on new gen
