wheeeee okay okay im making this thread so i cant psyche myself out. aaaand im making this initial writeup informal so i dont take it too seriously

i want to play more tectonic! i want to do some funny runs. i have one other idea in my back pocket that ill probably do at some point but for now i want to do some dual tribes

putting the bounty run tag on this thread bc ill be using the all tribe runs bounty rules but like... it should be noted that i find chipping away at massive goals without expecting to actually ever complete them to be fun, and thats the spirit under which im using the ruleset

(also i think the second-gym restriction in the ruleset sounds fun bc itll force me to like. do weird skips and such. also also this being technically a bounty run motivated me to finally figure out obs, so i can record fights now yippee)

i drew up a spreadsheet-optimized set of 11 dual-tribe runs that cover every single tribe with zero overlap, and then i threw it out because i kinda hated how optimizing that side of things was making me feel. fuck it we ball. i'm starting with ANIMATED/MYSTIC so i can use my main girl sigilyph; the only other one on my radar rn is FORTUNE/RADIANT bc thats the lunatone-solrock-gigalith combo and i like funny rock gang (im unsure if ill actually do it bc like. solrock and lunatone are so extremely lategame, but thats a problem for future me to worry about)

feeling the desire to like, elaborate on the first sentence of the last paragraph... how do i put this. my single takeaway from the theorycrafting phase was that i dont wanna optimize these runs on a macro level beyond checking to see if a given run is Possible, if that makes sense?
like it kinda makes me feel icky to sit here going "okay so i want to do this because it's Strong" or "i need to do these dualtribes next because otherwise im locked out of bushwhacker". over the course of the evening where i did Spreadsheet Golf it started to kill my desire to, like, actually play the game using the spreadsheet golf scores id cooked up. id rather approach these in the same spirit as a nuzlocke - that is to say, i don't know exactly what effects the teambuilding constraint is going to have going in, and the fun factor comes from having to adjust to it

• at first glance, animated is a very held-items-centric bonus. makes lorb even better, probably good also for mons like makyan dragalge that want a flame/frost orb to proc abilities. also good against specific strategies/fights/curses ofc but thats not rlly a teambuilding thing
• mystic means more things want protect than would otherwise want it, i think? 25% is kind of hefty, that’s nearly a free lorb boost. really really good against anything running sucker punch, probably also just generally good in a lot of cases bc like. unless a mon is choice itemed it probably already wants to be running some status moves

the exact bounds of animated’s “sources that aren’t attacks” categorizing are pretty interesting to me, bc theres stuff like

• i’m… assuming it doesn’t cut recoil damage, but i could see it going either way?
• does the like. delayed damage hit from slowbro’s ability get reduced
  theres a lot of funny little edge cases that i doubt will actually affect my teambuilding, but are whimsical to think about

overall i think mystic will be the really defining “enables funny/cool/strong teambuilding” trait in this duo but i Am determined to run a cool animated strat of some kind at least once. smth with flame/frost orb

you are allowed to do multiple takes on that challenge fwiw! I often find it's easier to find the line off-camera, sometimes write it down, and then record once I'm more confident in what I'm doing

(also yeah the thing i was struggling most with was like... trying to assemble the line in my head while freaking out bc the recording was rolling)

Yeah I think that's by far the hardest part — much better to do the experimenting off-camera (especially if you're resetting a bunch to test different things; then it just gets annoying to keep resetting the recording too)

eventually I think it gets better, but that's from experience + knowing the game and AI well enough to get it right on a first take, which takes a lot of practice

I really like how the beach teaches you the xray by giving multiple paths of trainers, it's fun on replays since you can figure out which ones you'd rather fight with your team.

it helps that early game her dps is also rlly solid, esp with erudite

the vague contour is smth along the lines of “rock polish setup on graveler while smth else (flying type, not weak to morgrem) uses follow me” -> “graveler repeatedly shell bell self-destructs while makyan vullaby stands there and is immune”

Yeah I'm using self destruct in my nuzlocke and it's pretty much as good. You're still oneshotting most stuff, 250 BP is 250 BP.

the main question is whether ill need to find graveler some offensive setup of some kind in order to consistently self-destruct OHKO (since im assuming it gets the spread move dps penalty)

. i mean also i dont remember off the top of my head if yez 2 has ghost types, which is a much more material problem, but we get there when we get there

Uhhhh to your damage issue, try crystal veil normal. And for the enemy ghost type issue, try trick + crystal veil. Crystal veil is the solution to all your problems (citation needed).

ive also discovered that lvl20 graveler selfdestruct just barely fails to kill sandaconda, and then it gets dust deviled into oblivion (and conversely without shell bell healing theres no way graveler is like, a sustainable strategy)

i have five free turns bc of follow me on togetic, so i just. use graveler to attack normalstyle on one of those turns

I think it's especially strong in this fight because the opening pair is way more threatening than the backups. Explosion is a great way to blitz past the hardest part of the fight.

ive played a few times as like tutorials! my very first time was in a 4 player game w some friends, i used a like premade white deck with a character whose name i forget (i won 🥳 ), one time was with my brother's fallout 4 deck (i won that one actually), then once with his sauron deck which i lost, and once with his eowyn deck which i won

Black - sacrifice for power and kill things
Green - big mana and big smashy
Red - Short term aggressive benefits
White - tokens and healing and being boring.

red gets a lot of "this turn" benefits also - big bursts of temporary mana, drawing limited-time-use cards (in formats that go longer like commander, this becomes more important in order for red to keep up)

Okay envy is typing so I'm listing more fun nahiri facts while we wait. Nahiri kept her sanity over 1000 years by painstakingly creating a model of Zendikar in her head. in addition to these mechanics it should be noted that the mtg colors also represent different ideologies/outlooks

blue: you know whats better than a lamborghini? knowledge. to blue, basically every issue can be distilled down using logical analytical frameworks

black: being selfish is awqsome :] chase your ambitions, move towards your goals, pit your two kids against each other in a succession battle to prove themselves to you

green: woo nature. the natural world is kinda cool. animalce? kinda swag. everyone is a little part of the bigger picture, and the bigger picture is the world

red: emotions are rad! i love being emotional #MyEmotions!! red is impulsive and act-first think-later-maybe and red does what it feels like all the time. candy tectonic is red

white: everyone is a little part of a bigger picture, and that bigger picture is Civilization. people have moral responsibilities to act in the interest of the greater good, and to better the lives of their fellow people, and whatever

the really fun part of this is that you can analyze characters, and generally figure out where they would fall in mtg color philosophy, and conversely this is why a lot of the (non-universes beyond 💀) mtg characters have the colors they do on their cards
