it wasn't, legacy patchy (the thing mojang uses to blacklist servers and is used in 1.8.9) breaks it

Not pinging for this anymore since most servers seem to know now that it isn't a big deal and they've pinged enough for it.

So about the log4j2 exploit, a few things:

The JVM arg you see flying around doesn't do anything on 1.8. Don't use it (or do, it does nothing though).
Hypixel has already patched it.
The client isn't affected on 1.8 (or any other version that uses legacy Patchy).
