Optifine isn't in my mod folder but this is the version I was using

try using the M6 version of 1.8.9 optifine listed in the previews section (for some reason)

pre2 is the version I have in my mods folder but I think pre1 works fine

thank you so much, updating my optifine and getting rid of any shaders fixed my problem
