• Chatting disables Skytils Copy Chat
• Compact Chat if I'm understanding correctly is in Patcher, so could be removed (and remove possible incompatibility)
• Vanilla Enhancement might be the Mod breaking Chat History and Copy Chat? but idk

You can also use Chatting instead of Skytils Copy Chat and Chatting should work fine with Patcher Chat History Length

Question i've had for a while (no ill will intended, I'm just legitimately curious):
Why is Essential required?

Is it only used for its config screen? And if so, why not just use Forge's built in config screen, or any of the other more functional options that don't come with a bunch of extra bloat and the potential for bugs?

I can't think of what other functionality Skytils would be making use of. I know Patcher only uses it for the config screen given there's the PolyPatcher fork which doesn't need Essential at all since it uses its own config library, so i assume the same is the case for Skytils?

(Before anyone asks, no I'm not asking this in order to fork Skytils to remove the Essential requirement like PolyPatcher did, that's way too much effort given my minimal modding experience)

Essential is a non-intrusive, quality of life mod that aims to improve your Minecraft playing and social experience.

Can I get rid of Essential?
No, you can't. This is due to the fact that all of the mods depend on it. It has little to no performance impact too so no need to worry about it causing performance issues. And any feature you don't want, except cosmetics, can be disabled.

What happened to ModCore?
Essential is the replacement for ModCore.

I bought cosmetics on ModCore. What happens to those?

Skytils uses essential primarily for our config but also a few other aspects. We use a few of its utilities for things like notifications (f.ex. when you copy chat) and to render your player in the profile viewer (yes this is horribly incomplete and nowhere near actually usable). Like patcher, we also use mixinextras which requires mixin 0.8 which is nearly impossible to ship on our own. Outside of this, I should disclose that we do have a partnership with Essential which generates revenue for us (when you use our code in their store). This partnership does not require us to use Essential however we are greatly incentivized to do so.

And oh, I see - I didn't think that it was possible to use most of that, since I think when Skytils first started requiring Essential, it was still fully closed-source at the time, but I guess there must have been an API available for more than just the configs. I'm glad you're getting more use out of it than just the Config API... And honestly a bit surprised to see Mixin used in such an old version of Minecraft, I can imagine it's not easy to integrate in an extremely outdated Forge version that doesn't support it, on a Minecraft version that I don't think has any standalone Mixin loaders available. (To be honest I still barely understand how Mixins work to begin with.)

And I... did kind of wonder if revenue was involved in some capacity, since Essential has the shop and all, but I won't judge over the deal since I absolutely get it despite not liking Essential's store, but I won't get further into that. That said, I'm pleasantly surprised that they doesn't require you to make use of Essential as part of the deal.

when we first started using essential, it was entirely for the config system (we started with modcore lol). mixin is only hard to use on legacy forge due to how it ships mixin 0.7 and some mods actually rely on 0.7 behavior so you can't just load 0.8 carelessly.

my understanding of mixin is that it effectively modifies classes while they're loaded to have different instructions and effectively "rewrite" the class at runtime.

i totally get it, microtransactions suck however i would like to emphasize that none of the functionality is gated behind any form of payment. i don't see us removing essential until we either drop 1.8.9 as a platform or another alternative exists but still very unlikely for either option.

Yeah, that's understandable, and I know no functionality is gated behind money, I have other reasons for disliking Essential's store. (Honestly I kind of dislike microtransactions as a whole, but especially in a mod that's being injected into a game by a different developer... It feels very unsecure as a concept, even if it actually is.)
