#A New Tool That Let's You Mark Areas as Unsafe

Picture this: you create a challenge for the player, like in the gif, but you don't want them to respawn in the challenge area. The only way to do this is by using parts that make the ground "unsafe" and making them invisible. The issue is that it takes up a tile space and is very tedious to do, especially if you have decoration already on those tiles.

My suggestion: A sunlight/darkness type tool that lets you overlay an unsafe zone box anywhere you want, and its only shown when in editor mode!

aren't moving platforms and grating unsafe

#

?

odd heron

grating is safe

#

and theres cases you dont want to use moving platform cuz they make holes in the map

#

also the fact they can only be placed over holes and water, while also limiting the block pallete and decorations

this is in a state of "there are workarounds but it'd still be nice" imo

odd heron
#

the workarounds are TERRIBLE

#

It wouldnt just be nice lol i think itd be a vital tool for makers

#

It could even take conditions that make the unsafe zone inactive so the ground becomes safe and respawnable, you literally cant do that with the current options cuz you cant make them "disappear"

ok fair yeah

"it's only shown when in editor mode!"
My issue with this is consistency. If I were a player who falls off what looks like stable ground, I expect to end up right before where I fell. If the player is suddenly warped back a large distance for seemingly no logical reason, it's just going to cause confusion. If such a tool is going to exist, there should be at least some visual difference.

I dont believe that necessary if a level is designed properly, most use cases for this are areas that very clearly look like a small challenge areas, such as the example gif

#

once you respawn the first time, youll quickly realize you gotta do it all in one go.

regal edge
#

yeah imo in that kind of scenario it feels- very jarring to respawn in the same spot

odd heron
#

But yeah, if someone very improperly uses this, itll make for a very annoying experience

#

its either that or use invisible parts which do the exact same thing

#

not only that, blocks that fall in water arnt safe... thats the worst case of "i should respawn on this tile but i dont"

regal edge
#

i don't. agree there. but ok

#

yeah

odd heron
#

you dont agree that invisible parts do essentially the same thing without it being visually shown to the player?

regal edge
#

i don't agree that blocks falling in water being unsafe is weird

odd heron
#

its not going anywhere

regal edge
#

neither is a moving plaform set to not move

odd heron
#

only way to take it back out of the water is if a trap door is on the same tile, you close the trap door and then the blocks pops back out the water.

odd heron
#

makes no sense, its not going anywhere

regal edge
#

agree to disagree here ig. feels right to me

odd heron
#

cuz were used to it

regal edge
#

nah

#

as in literally not

#

i very rarely play online levels (unless requested) and don't often use blocks myself

#

infact, i didn't know that fact

#

but it just Makes Sense

#

it's besides the point of this feature req anyway though 👍

odd heron
#

anyone thats new to the game will never consider that, UNTIL they walk over a non moving platform, fall off, and then respawn somewhere else

#

now they know "anything that looks like that.. i dont respawn on" after more hours of playing thatll become normal.

#

Im only really talking about this cuz carmage brought up the visual issue for the player, but i dont believe that would be a problem

regal edge
#

i was talking about sunken blocks but yeah

odd heron
#

oh, yeah. I wish there were some way to visually indicate but.. idk

#

the best i could think of to create something like this witha visual indicator is giving the player one hit and then putting hella checkpoints wherever youd want them to respawn

regal depot
#

invisible conveyor belts do this for now but an object that's easier to use and edit and stuff would be nice

odd heron
#

ye, i showed that in the gif, i just dont like that you can only put that and no decorations

#

not to mention it negates honey and ice floor and fissured floors (this ones more so annoying cuz you have to put the conveyors around it, luckily fissured is already unsafe ground)

The best way I've found is that the rug can't be spawned on, specifically the one that can only be resized. Otherwise you could make an indicator like pubbles and have invisible floor switches.

new tool and a canRespawn property for modding and yeah this would be lit

^ You can use invisible static conveyors for smaller dimensions of unsafe ground

regal edge
#

but that limits decor

#

it's not great either way
