#"Upgrade Item" Chests

There aren't too many items where this is currently relevant, but with the addition of several bow varieties it's come back to mind.

Currently, if you have an active item tool and open a chest with another active tool (e.g. bombs, then grappleshot), you'll take the second item and put the first one in the chest. This is fine for the most part, but it creates odd situations where you might want to start them out with a low-level tool (bombs, bow), then upgrade them later on to a better version (remote bombs/recurve bow). There are some ways around this, like having the chest only appear if you place the first item on a pedestal, then have the pedestal disappear when you open the chest, but this is itself slightly limiting because you have to prevent getting softlocked if they drop some other tool instead of the intended one.

I'd like a way to simplify this process somehow.

This is a pretty big ask, but what if you could attach an item-specific trigger to a chest/stand so that only one specific item being placed within triggers it?

Trying to imagine how it helps OP’s idea. Kinda like you have to put in bombs and you get Mega Bombs back? Would be a neat way to have an NPC “forge”/“upgrade” your item

not necessarily "insert item A, get item B", more "item B replaces item A". like how the longshot replaces the hookshot in ocarina of time.

which will assumedly include that, yes

#

but this request would also be nice, yeah

So like a property of the chest and pedestal like “Upgrade item of the same type” that replaces your item with the new one if it’s the same weapon but a different type. Like you have a bow and pick up a new bow that’s of a different type.

hmmm

on reflection this might be better served as a property for select items that lets the maker say "this item overwrites any lesser version of this item"

#

off the top of my head there's bombs -> remote bombs, lantern -> spectral lantern, silver gauntlets -> gold gauntlets, and bow -> compound -> duplex -> recurve

#

but as a property it would retain flexibility so the maker could still have the user swapping between, say, regular and recurve bows if that's how they want to design things

#

(admittedly since lanterns and gauntlets are passive this isn't really relevant for them)

lantern -> freezeflame OR spectral lantern

well my original idea was to make it so if you drag an drop an item onto another item, you would get the nested item if you already posess the original one

sour cosmos
#

freezeflame can't light regular torches

peak halo
#

ok fair

sour cosmos
#

oh that would also work

gilded bridge
#

this will collide with the other idea of combining items though, since both would use drag and drop

#

so possibly there could be an item "bag"? item? that you can add multiple items to, and you would get all?

peak halo
#

compound also isn't- directly worse than duplex and recurve-

#

i think it should be bow -> compound OR duplex

gilded bridge
#

mario maker allowed these upgrade items exactly like this too, i.e. fire flower when already big, otherwise mushroom

peak halo
#

then duplex -> recurve

gilded bridge
peak halo
#

true that would also work yeah

sour cosmos
#

give me a minute i'm doing a thing

gilded bridge
#

i just fear that the item "bag" would be too similiar to the pouch visually

sour cosmos
#

ideally it would stay open with the remote bomb in my inventory and the regular bomb gone

#

again, at maker discretion, however that ends up happening

peak halo
#

yeah

gilded bridge
#

right

sour cosmos
#

anyway if you already had plans that would address this then no worries 🙂

So the current thing to solve is how to allow nesting and how to allow combining items and make sure each process is distinct from one another since they’d both work well as a drag onto another item style of combining?

#

If you like, both could both be drag and drop. But after you drop, you get a prompt asking “Would you like to combine or nest these items?”.
