but like I think this is not the worst fate yet, like Urdu is Indo-European too, so maybe you have at least tiny tiny tiny similarities to English
actually, its quite smart of you as well to know about kashmir conflict
it's absolutely not similar... in any way or form
it's the right server. i hope someone knowledgeable connects with you
Thanks cali
That's a really insightful point tbh I actually used to think I had a low IQ because I would forget so many words or early alzheimer despite having read quite a few books in English but hearing that you actively take notes has been a real eye-opener for me ngl i definitely should have been noting things down as well. Thank you for sharing your experience 🙌 from now on, I'll be sure to try this method so I don't forget the new things I read in English
It makes a lot of sense listening repeatedly and actively noting things down is basically how your brain internalizes the grammar and phrasing. It sounds like it gave you that essential "native feel" that made your own speaking practice so much more effective later on
That's so sweet of you! Thank you so much for the encouragement, right nobody is perfect but i will try my best for this test 🙏
How do I pronounce hypocarotenemia
Carrot juice won’t tan your skin, it just builds up pigment, causing a yellow-orange tint called carotenemia. It’s usually harmless, but here’s what to watch out for:
-
Skin discoloration that can be mistaken for jaundice
-
High sodium load from canned carrots, linked to ER visits in extreme cases
-
Increased lung cancer risk from hi...
around 50% into the recording
like in the middle of it, he pronounces carotenemia
and adding hyper- in front of it is probably the easiest part to do
also one native pronouncing it with an american accent
Seems like it is pretty predictable, like it's pronounced the way you'd probably expect it to be pronounced (unlike "choir" or "quiche" and so on)
hypo-* not hyper-
but ye
thank you
Oh yes my bad sorry
after you listen and analyse things many times, you kind of start to see many patterns and things. Sometimes you end up remembering way more than you would think you could
I have not experienced this so intensively in reading and in other things, only listening felt so intensive and so beneficial to me. Other things helped but they did not feel as good in the long run
Maybe because listening and speech are the most idk, "natural", things, in languages. Like you know, humans used to only speak and not even be able to write, for a long time in human history
Or, for example, blind people can also learn languages, maybe even quicker and easier than people who see normally
And yet everyone understood each other, they had no need for writing. I can imagine people were learning languages even in those old times, without anything except for listening
Rightttt cause like When you focus on listening, your brain naturally picks up intonation rhythm and correct grammar things you can't get from reading alone so speaking and for example in studies it show that speaking aloud is one of the best ways to actually remember and consolidate new information cause it affects the memory and force the brain to operate instantly so yeah
Could you recommend some resources about practice listening or specking. I want to improve them.
Guys can you recommend me some resources for practicing listening and speaking I wanna improve them .would be grateful if you do so
This is a lovely YouTube account if you are interested in psychology.
Ahh hell nah
That for depressed people
How do you know, I’m depressed for real 😳
You're watching psychological content, it's kinda obvious
Wow all the time I just thought that was interested in psychology and human behaviors 😓
that's a good recommendation, I used to watch it, and it taught me a lot of new words
Nah ignore him lol. You can be interested in psychology without being depressed
Some mentally ill people or people who struggle with mental health (including depressed people) develop an interest in psychology, either out of wanting to understand what's wrong with themselves or out of wanting to help others deal with mental health issues they know all too well, but lots of people have an interest in the subject that's not based in their own struggles. Badass just made a hasty generalisation and harmfully stereotyped
nowadays more and more people have mental health issues, also minor ones, not very noticeable ones, so they seek information. it's interesting anyway
It is. 🥲🥲
Ted education
I heard tounge twisters are good also
One tongue twister for you
Intermediate intimate imitate intimidate
8/10, you should chill and speak a bit clearer
No worries when you practice much enough
the most annoying thing in this is that english spelling is so considerably detached from its pronunciation that this makes no sense at all
even different parts of words are stressed, randomly depending on the word, this is unheard of in most normal languages
Where are you from?
I don't know terminology to give you a detailed explanation but your main issue is the sound of your vowels. Words that stand out: "sound" "American", "while", "to"
Hello, I’m Brazilian and besides wanting to improve my English I also want to be able to make friends in this process 🇧🇷✊🏽
...I want you guys to criticise and... (I guess you meant "rating") "rating" kind of sounded like "writing" (something like /ɹ̠a̠~ʌ́ɪ(ɾ?)ɪŋ/ instead of /ɹ̠ɛ́ɪɾɪŋ/. The initial vowel of "rating" is the same vowel as in the word "raiding". Those are pretty much homophones in many cases. Or at least they sound very similar.
"sound" sounded like /sɑ̟́nt/ instead of /saʊnd ~ sæʊnd/ or /sa~æwnd/ (weird vowels). (here you should pronounce the same vowel as in the word "how")
"American" sounded like /əmerʲɪkʲán/ instead of /əmɛ́ɹ̠ɪkən/ (stress + palatalization (you soften your consonants before some vowels) + weird quality of vowels)).
Some words sound pretty unclear. (like the word "rating").
Some sounded very good. Like the word "enhance".
ISSUES: palatalization, wrong quality of your vowels, wrong consonants.
Besides, if you want to avoid these kinds of mistakes, try studying phonetics, it might help. If you don't want to learn phonetics, at least listen to native speakers of American English.
How to pronounce "Colonel"?
In British English you pronounce it Ker-nal
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/sv/ordbok/engelska/colonel https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/kernel You pronounce it the same way as you pronounce the word "kernel", no?
Yes
They're pronounced the same

devoicing of the /z/ in 'his' and no linking of 'his' and 'eyes', it should be /hɪz‿ajz/ and not /hɪs ajs/

the vowel in 'hurt' souds strange. it should be the same as in the word "bird" or the unreduced form of "her", /ɝ/. your vowel sounded more like /ɵɹ/ or something similar
hello
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/city
When I check this dictionary, I noticed that "t" in the word "city" is pronounced like "t", not like "d", whereas "t" in the word "Italy" and "security" is pronounced like "d". It seems that I need to review pronunciation rules for American English and find a good phonetic alphabet file for it.
Can someone provide a good source for these?
it's not pronounced like d
do you mean the "t" in "security"?
none of the words you listed have any d sounds
city has t that sounds kinda like d, yes, but it's not actual d. It's called "flap T"
It's a voiced alveolar tap/flap yeah
Both T and D turn into it intervocalically
So latter and ladder become homophonous
It can't happen in stressed syllables
Sometimes it happen before /l/ and /n/
Battle/fiddle
Button
I am not very informed/educated about this. I just write what I hear. I should have written "they sound kind of 'd'"
Do you think that it is important to learn things like what you wrote if I want to improve my pronunciation? I won't teach English.
@finite sapphire @ember hatch
it's important for american/canadian english
though it's not a phoneme
however if you don't use the flap t you will sound too formal in many cases
Okay, then. I am not familiar with terms like phoneme, "flap T" (academic terms related to linguistics/phonetics). What I mean that whether I should study such academic terms related phonetics if I want to improve my English pronunciation.
not really
but knowing the basics of ipa wouldn't be a bad thing
and some terms connected to it
My method so far is doing the shadowing technique, checking dictionaries such as cambridge, watching videos on Youtube.
Okay, thanks a lot.
Yeah it's good unless you want to have native-like pronunciation
It's not my priority now.
Then shadowing is the way
Hello everyone I have an interview on Tuesday the position is BDR and I want some on v.c to help me practice about this topic and help me sound American as much as possible
Hi! I can help with interview prep. DM with a few suitable times!
Chatgpt is a perfect formula for that, which I suggest you to go and ask it the same question 🙂
Wish you the best luck (Although I don't believe in luck)
I don't get it you want to improve your pronunciation but you're not working on it. what kinda sense does that make?
Huh, you got it
Your vowel in 'know' is a monophthong when it really should be a diphthong
You're saying /noː/ instead of /noʊ/ or /nəʊ/
'Come' is pronounced with the same vowel as in 'Strut' and 'cut'
You sort of mixed the words 'dandelion' and 'wine' into one word. It isn't clear at all that you were saying 'dandelion wine'
I'd like to be corrected if I've made any mistakes or sound unnatural
no issues. I didn't personally read it with the meaning that would cause that emphasis on "were" but it's probably fine too.
Ah thank you
Then what if I want native like pronunciation, what should I do instead?
This will involve at least five solid backflips, each of them by exactly 179 degrees, and also becoming a rabbit keeper in the middle of London
All of your rabbits need to be trained in martial arts and also be capable of training you
Sorry I don't want to talk to strangers. Hope you understand
uhh I guess learning the ipa wouldn't hurt anyway
and some cool allophones that you can make if you use the ipa

Pedro Carolino could not speak a word of English. However, that didn't stop him writing a guide to the English language for Portuguese speakers. The resulting book - with its peculiar vocab and backwards turns of phrase - has brought joy to English speakers around the world for over a century. Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain are among its biggest...
I reckon that it’s meant to be a joke.
Thanks I truly noticed the difference. I'm trying to sound more natural and become more articulate. 😇
I think i mispronounced the phrase "it goes like." it's apparent that I said "I goes like" (Dang it). Nonetheless, please, if you can recognize what my problem is, it'll be pleasure if you let me know what should I work on to have a better accent. 😇
i dont think thats the problem, you did mean it goes like lol
i think you mispronounced healed
Hi @subtle phoenix your pronunciation is overall good! You did mispronounce "healed" (it is hee-uhld), but the rest was good.
On the word "reveal", try to give more emphasis to the last syllable. It is "re-veel". Your pronunciation hurried through the last syllable, so it sounded more like "re-vuhl". Aim for the long "E" sound
At the beginning, you said something that sounded like "I thought it's gonna be regardless to not send it to you". At least, I heard the word "regardless". Regardless is not the correct word to use here. Did you say something else?
guys, what do you hear from this audio? for me she is saying "it's six" but it is wrong
They're interchangeable!
Sick if true 😛
lmao
It is “at six”
surely it couldn't be?
I wouldn't be surprised if that first vowel were a schwa, but it's stright up a kit vowel
Do you have the full sentence recorded?
No
It is from a pronunciation course
I have more examples, but not full sentences for now
But it is a schwa and a stopped t
But for my bralizean ears it sounds like it’s six, no matter how many times i heard that
Yeah, certainly kit
'six', to me, is closer to s/ɛ/x and not s/ɪ/x, so it's either 'it six' (sicks), 'it sex'.
or something like [sɪɛks] (goes from kit to dress)
or maybe something between kit and dress
and not at six or it's six I guess
Can you help me to improve my pronunciation
Hi, how to pronounce "Rarely" in British?
Yeah, you guessed it. I said "regardless." What is the word that would be an alternative?
Thanks to you, Mr.Matthew
how to improve my accent and pronounciation to be like an american one?

Here's the paragraph:
There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it: a Dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the other two were using it as a cushion, resting their elbows on it, and talking over its head. “Very uncomfortable for the Dormouse,” thought Alice; “only, as it’s asleep, I suppose it doesn’t mind.”
Its quite easy to understand you, i dont notice any heavy accenting and its perfectly legible, i would say as advice when reading to try to follow punctuation with your pauses, the commas and full stops are moments to take breath, they provide a framework for breathing and pacing i think it would sound more natural if you took breath at the punctuation notes rather than between words, i think you did a good job and that this will come as your more comfortable with the words your reading, when i was learning to read as a child in england i would often read first to pronounce the words and get used to the sounds, and then again following appropriate breathing and short pausing at punctuation for a sense of flow.
Thank you, Devilsreborn! I will keep practicing.
Congrats, Your accent is easy to understand; it's slow and smooth. Keep it up, but you have to keep practicing, though.
Beast, keep it up. Your pronunciation is good, but you have to give more attention to your vowels. This channel has helped me a lot "@EnglishCoachChad" If you want, you can give it a try. (You'll find it on YouTube).

how do ik i can speak british
Overall, well done! I listened without looking at the passage first and keeping British English pronunciation in mind. Some minor feedback:
- Pause longer between the two words "different writers". As it is now, the "T" sound of "different" blends into the word "writers" and sounds like "diffren tritors" rather than "different writers".
- Make sure to really enunciate that "L" sound in "Latin". Strangely, at first I thought you said "matten"! After listening a couple times, I think the issue might be that you exhaled a bit harshly while saying "Latin". Since it was breathy, it was hard to identify the "L" sound clearly.
- On the topic of breathiness, I heard audible breath again on "found" and the final "Latin". Perhaps you were just trying to speak quietly into the microphone? It's natural to trail off at the end of sentences (dropping in volume or clarity), but try to control your breaths throughout to avoid a harsh exhale at the end!
- I've never heard the pronunciation "Hoo-ker" for that name. American English reads the name as "Huuh-ker". If anyone here is a native British English speaker, I'd be curious to know if the pronunciation differs!
- Nicely done reading the years 1550 and 1660 by the way!
My many thanks! I'm not sure why I become so much more breathy when reading, but it does seem to affect comprehensibility and naturalness, so I shall try to lessen it henceforth.
As for 'hooker', I had never happaned upon the word as a name and it didn't at all cross my mind that it, in fact, may be pronounced as the word typically is in its sense of 'prostitute', so I pronounced it as I saw fit based on the spelling. It was merely a lapse in memory, a mishap! I do believe the word in British English would be pronounced as in American English.
Seems like it is not pronounced the same way in both dialects
Richard Hooker (1554-1600) can be considered the intellectual father of the Anglican Church. His great work, the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, was intended to stake out a clear middle course (a via media) between Calvinism on the one hand and the Roman Catholicism on the other. As such he gave the Church of England a core document of its own di...
Andrea Russel speaks American english
And the other speaker speaks British english
try to listen from around 0:20 timestamp
And, seems like both of these speakers said it the same way
I think neither of them is American
But
well I have looked up Andrea Russel and she's american
Although maybe that's just a different person named the same
anyway, regardless of that, they sound the way you do
when they say Hooker
and Emily pointed out that the pronunciation of it in American English is more like huuh-ker
Therefore yeah that's why I say seems like it's actually different in both dialects
They don't
I said huu kuh
They said hu kuh
To use IPA: [ʉː] vs [ʊ]
Both Brits and Americans use /ʊ/ but with slightly different qualities
oh. These sounds are definitely too similar to me then
but it's good that you mention [ʉː], because that's exactly polish y but this time rounded. Interesting to me
like /ʉ/ is rounded /ɨ/
yeah [ʉː] is how almost everyone realises /uː/ in modern times
it used to be an actual [uː] in the past
and it kinda still is for VERY posh accents
The only time when I make a posh sound
but often we just say it's long
I like how there are different ways of saying it, because english is not very limited to one specific way of pronouncing everything
since there are many dialects
yee
I listened to that recording that I found, again, and I notice this [ʉː] indeed. Interesting. I have never even used this sound, I constantly use /u/
Hi
I'm looking forward to having a speaking partner to practice together

I would ask if someone with a good microphone and very clear english pronunciation be willing to help me out? I wrote a speech and I’d really like to improve my pronunciation and memorize it more easily.
If anyone could record themselves reading my speech out loud and send me an MP3 (or any audio file), that would help me a lot because i'm a french student who needs help
thanks you in advance to who's up for it

Hello, I'm trying to speak English, and you too. One hour of sending audio messages might improve our language skills if you're interested.😇
hey guys i am a new english learner in this community my goal is to improve my english speaking skill and get fluent
Hello my name is Januš Šymanoŭski I'm from Belarus. Let's speak
anyone from iran?
anyone from swiss?
Hello there my name is Januš Šymanoŭski. I'm from Belarus, Minsk. Every single day I'm eating potatoes and dancing liavonikha with hot belarusian ladies. I'm learning english to go to Canada. I need a native speaker to communicate and improve my English skills to make my dream real. My English level is A2 sorry for mistakes
Why would you want to go to Canada when you can be eating potatoes and dancing liavonikha with hot Belarussian ladies everyday? I simply can't understand it
I want reindeer
And moose. I want to dance with Canadian moose
In other words, I want to moose. And I want to reindeer
eats black cat and his moose
As in you want to see reindeer and moose?
No, I just want to reindeer them
And amoose them. I think they would be very amoosed
@ember hatch you'll love this joke
Hey everyone
Hello
Hello yall, can anyone help me with pronunciation

I just do shadowing to practice my pronunciation
You can check out English Coach Chad on YouTube, it’s really helpful!

You’re Welcome
Imagine shadowing just like you copy other people, copying not only works in english but also a lot of other things
Yes exactly! Shadowing is basically copying, but in a smart way
It helps improve pronunciation, rhythm, and listening skills at the same time. That’s why it’s so effective for English and other languages too
hayy guys can anyone help me to improve my pronunciation cause I feel like my English is stuck not on progress
Why not if you feel free then ping me on my dm
Hi, I'm looking for a Spanish english learner to improve by helping each other.
what accent is it you want to get closer to ?
OK, next time when I'm free, send you a DM
the accent I can speak a little now is an American accent
Sure
Do you want to chat about it later on call
yeah sure if you want but my english is not so good as well
how does this channel work?
I think you should learn about IPA (international phonetic alphabet)
like ABCD isn't it
Not really ,it's more like the pronunciation written with different letters
Like
- Thought — /θɔːt/
- Enough — /ɪˈnʌf/
- Beautiful — /ˈbjuːtɪfəl/
okey I got it, tbh I find some words its very difficult to pronunciation
It's like a separate language, if someone put that in front of me, I wouldn't know at all what it said
@vocal wing you can try each sound alone and then put syllables together, after that saying the whole word.
What is a word you find hard to pronounce? @vocal wing
words that sound almost the same as though, through, thought, work, word, world and many more words. im so confuse how to pronounce that
but sometimes i can't to follow the sound word
@vocal wing
Any psychiatrist here?
wow your pronunciation in bahasa is really good broo damn

Aw, thank you! I'm merely fond of reading older works and tend towards formal constructions and vocabulary in my writing.
That explains a lot, thanks!

I'm really glad you do speak like that

hey everyone, I am practicing accent reduction so i made this audio recording of myself reading a passage out loud, so could y'all listen to it an share your thoughts? thx
I think I didn't properly hear what came after "chinese"
if he had always lived among chinese [...]
I don't know, I somehow can not recognize what you said after that
It sounded almost like "cannibals" which would be quite outrageous in this context lol
Maybe it was just supposed to be "counterparts"?
well it was cannibals, i was quoting descartes so the text is archaic
well i'm actually not a native spanish speaker, but yeah tbh i guess i can hear it now, i tend to speak too fast and it makes articulation a bit tricky
@timid meadow oh true

Hii
hello i want to ask how to pronounce** algae**. my teacher said "algay", and i found in the dictionary, and it's / ˈældʒiː /.
Which one is right?
ǽld͡ʒi ~ áld͡ʒɪi̯
thank you!
Well how do i pronounce overexaggeration without fumbling
g and j are both correct pronunciations, but pronouncing the final vowel as /aɪ/ is probably archaic; I wouldn't be too surprised to hear someone use it, though. They might be confusing it with the 'i-' plurals (which are pronounced as /aɪ/) or imitating Classical Latin (which pronounced it as /ae/, very close to /aɪ/)
Like what happens is i can pronounce that word really fluently but when i actually try to use it in a sentence while having a conversation, i always tend to fumble on that single word
its algi

see this text proves my point you nice
Well, I suppose if I'm to be asked to aid in the pronunciation of words, I can do that. I quite dislike the 'how do I learn to speak English?' question, as I feel I can't say much more than 'Just practice. Watch videos in English, imitate them, and speak to natives', though
Oh well, I can try to help those who happen to approach me with an enquiry, sure 😅 I don't think I'm very helpful, but I'll do my best so long as I'm not expected to give lessons to them regularly
Thank you
strenGth.

Ah, sorry! I didn't see it in your bio when I checked. I must have missed it!
I'm not sure where you might be from, I'm sorry 😅
I’m comfirmed that it lacks Arabic influence.
Wait! I saw yr pronouns. Are you a real woman too?
Idk why you're using the term 'real woman', like I'm a woman yeah :p
I happen to be trans too, though
‘Cus there’s nothing to envy nor cultures and styles to crave.
We trans women feel like women b’cus we are in how we think and treat our families, not how we look.
aw thanks

sounds american but imo her cadence is a bit weird
I bet she sounds native if she were to talk normally
During our planet’s latest and seemingly interminable revolution around the Sun, the tech industry’s obsession with AI soared to ever more implausible heights. CEOs began openly gloating about replacing their underlings with AI “agents.” The phenomenon of so-called AI psychosis became a national news story as more people were seemingly driven over the edge by their silver-tongued chatbot companions. “Slop” took on a new meaning. And the word “circular” suddenly started being used a whole lot in the same sentence as “billions of dollars” or even “hundreds of billions of dollars.”
Will 2026 finally deliver us from this endless cavalcade of large language model madness? Not likely, according to computer scientist and “godfather” of AI Geoffrey Hinton. AI will only continue to improve next year, he predicts, reaching a point where it will liberate us from all our horrible low-paying jobs.
“I think we’re going to see AI get even better,” Hinton said during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “It’s already extremely good. We’re going to see it having the capabilities to replace many, many jobs. It’s already able to replace jobs in call centers, but it’s going to be able to replace many other jobs.”
Hinton was one of three recipients of the prestigious Turing Award in 2018 for his work on neural networks that formed the bedrock of modern AI, earning him the moniker of being a “godfather” of the field.
In 2023, Hinton declared that he regretted his life’s work after stepping down from his role at Google, where he had been for over a decade. Since then, he’s become one of the tech’s most prominent doomsayers.
Why are you asking these questions? 😅
Very native like
I hear she speaks another language from her accent, but her pronunciation is really good most of the time, I'd have no clue what other languages but she sounds foreign.
I live in a governorate.
If there’s no way to improve the accent alone then VCs and meeting natives in person are absolutely useless.
😔
I prefer learning for a few months alone B4 starting speaking.
Wt 💀
I think she said 'Here we go. Do you like my voice?'
I speak naturally.
A lot of time I pull off a perfect girlish voice in Arabic and ppl mistakenly think it’s a succubus using my body, but in English it’s harder, so I have to practise.
If something goes wrong, it’s just an accent and I know how to fix it alone.
You did great with that voice
The voice 😑

How was it?
Where are you from? Why do you try to speak in English, Reasons please!

You sound strange

Can someone explain me the pronunciation of native? A couple of hours ago I tried to said it but idk what I said and another person who was in vc with me got mad. I don't want to get wrong again. Thanks 🙂
Well, if you want a standard US or British pronunciation, you can use cambridge dictionary! You can click it so you can hear the pronunciation

@naive sundial wdym by that flag?
I’m a woman. However, I enjoy listening to yr msg.
Plus I already have a target accent, wanna know it?
oh sorry i thought you a male.
sure i would love to know
i think u r a 🏳️⚧️ am i right?
If you go with biology, I’m neither but I’m more of a male.
If you go with psychology, I’m a female through and through, but I enjoy some masc activities like any woman.
Indeed.
alr
I was born with this condition.
Since the soulful/psych explanation fails.
Can you explain it organically/bioscientifically or spiritually?
No worries; I live normally, a woman in a woman’s body, no entrapment, no misassignment at birth.
yes
i don’t think so
you dif from iraq 🇮🇶
My brain is a part of my body.
i thought our brains inside our butts
Mine is typically female.
Are you a Saudi too?
Saudia and Iraq ain’t parts of the Anglosphere; that’s why I wanna be judged for what I do and choose, not gender/sex, ethnicity/race, taste, handedness, orientation, species, etc.
Forget I’m a Saudi human, let’s say that I’m an anthro palm from a distant plant, my identity is irrelavent, pls, judge my accent only.
How’d ya know?
My brother is also born this way.
It’s biology and social intercourse, we can’t do anything since even if the physical defect and societal interaction that caused gender incongruence are no longer present, their effect is permanent.
e.g. My brain is no longer defectous and I no longer care abt misandry and the good life of girls as in the past, but I still feel like a woman.
We can just choose what we do to our bodies.
For me, it’s a woman’s body, so no need to do anything.
Your accent is difficult to understand. Regarding its origin, it does not have the sound of a native English accent, nor, queerly, does it possess that of an Arabic accent. Regardless, it's paramount that you better emphasise your words: currently, the dearth of enunciation renders your speech nigh on impenetrable. The Scottish accent I'm aware you seek to imitate ought to be built upon a strong foundation; therefore, I would advise you to, firstly, learn to stress content words properly, as that would lessen the slurred quality of your speech greatly, and, secondly, learn the precise native qualities of English consonants; only thence might your attempt at a native-like accent be worthwhile.
im not judging your gender, i dont care, im talking about your accent you can listen to my voice message again, i respect you no matter what you are.
That’s not what I mean by judgement.
Some assume that being a trans woman makes my skills better in smth, but it doesn’t.
Or if I am from X, that means I should behave in a Y way.
But nobody chooses their personality, we only choose morality, dexterity, and respect, so we should be judged accordingly.
of course
dude chill ik i didnt say anything wrong about this
or miss chill*
sry
I can never say anybody oppose me.
I’m just curious abt how we should judge one another in pedagogy and sociology. I’ve never said that judging is a wrong thing: Judgement is a good way to improve fast.
Similarly, if I tell somebody to talk abt another topic, I never mean that talking abt my gender identity is wrong or opposing, but I don’t want to bore others especially that I still don’t know much abt biology and psychology to diversify subtopics.
Dude can be used neutrally, but I prefer femme language.
There’s no one Arabic accent and I agree especially that I asked the ppl in person abt my accent in English and it’s not the same as my Arabic.
No need to apologise.
I don’t even want my taxon to be used for judgement.
Since I’ve lost the apples of my eyes (e.g. a myrtle and a black kitty) due to the fact that I was overrestimated due to my genus while being a human is a personal fact: the real guage is the skills and manners.
I dislike contradiction since good manner and understandability are skills as well, not just grammar and phonetics making them strengthening one another.
Being understood in a job, doesn’t mean I’m understandable overall.
قرة عيني = the apple of my eyes
dont make it a big deal
like i said i respect you no matter you are and i agree with you
anyone interested in reviewing a couple of homophones together in the pronunciation channel now?

But I’m still oppressed, so I need to find the way for freedom to eat more ice cream.
FesSe3uudiya.
damn
are you planning to move out?
Yep, but only to get rid of the oppressers.
As I don’t have to speak with a native to get a better accent nor to change my body.

Also, announcing something that's 'Text only' in the #🗒|pronunciation channel of all places is an odd move
are you american by any chance
anyone interested in reading a c1/c2 short essay in the reading channel now?
Hi people, I wanna learn English. Acent British. Could someone recommend a YouTube channel or help me privately? I'm a beginner, but I have a basic understanding.
Which British accent? English, Northern Irish, Scottish, Welsh?
prob rp ~ ssb
monophthongal /ɔw/ in GA is a bit weird. (your 'so' sounds like [soː ~ so̞ː] which is quite common in Canada but not too common in the US. make it closer to /sɔw/)
Makes sense, it annoys me when people say the "British accent"......that isn't a thing
ye it's quite ambiguous 🫠
Indeedd
I forget ,sorry. I like Accent London. Irish it's beautiful too hahaha
london has a ton of accents 🫠
I like the brummie accent /j
So difficult 😫 hahaha. Thanks for reminding me, I'd never thought of that before ;-;
I started liking British accents more because of this accent. I think it's the same as Peaky Blinders' accent.
Heyy
It is, there are two, the brummie accent and the black country accent
Hey I am new here
thank you very much👍
👌
I learned more about history today. Thanks 😊
(I assume you aim for the General American accent)
many diphthongs sound more monophthongal from you
for instance, 'title' sounded like 'turtle'
'main' sounded like 'man' (should be cloeser to /mɛjn/, not [mɛən])
'read' sounded like 'rate'
'whatever' sounded close to 'wherever' (should be closer to [wəɾɛ́vɚ], not [wɐɹɛ́vəɹ])
'so' sounds like [so̞ ~ so] (should be closer to /sɔw ~ sɔʊ/)
'with you' should sound closer to /wɪ́ð jú/, not [wɪ́t͡ʃü] (/u/ can be centralized to [ü ~ ʉ])
also make sure to aspirate /p, t, k, (t͡ʃ)/ word-initially and in stressed syllables (pictures [pʰɪ́kt͡ʃɚz]), pretty [pʰɹ̠̥˔ɪ́ɾi]
(and the vowel in wAlk should be [ɑ ~ ɑ̟ ~ ɑ̈] in GA, not /ɔ/)
(this chart represents the vowels/consonants of conservative rp)

I'd appreciate some feedback on my pronunciation. Transcript:
``The biggest benefit of our complex talking is the community feeling it creates. While bees and ants can work together, too, they can’t change their social setup easily. Humans can adapt their groups based on new needs or challenges. This flexibility helped us spread across the planet and handle all kinds of environments.
This concept of shared myths is particularly fascinating because it underlies so many aspects of our modern world. Just look at the rise of cryptocurrency—it’s a perfect example of a new shared myth being created right before our eyes``
@open vale
I find your English pronunciation quite good. However, you could benefit from using a softer /s/ sound in the word "this" to avoid it sounding like "these" which ends in a sound similar to /z/.
@river lance How’s my accent?
sounds creepy dude
I wish I hadn't clicked on that
In what sense?
@naive sundial You have a breathy voice in that recording.
I need to practise that. But honestly, IDK what I will use it for: Maybe the accent or singing ‘cus the Saudis around me don’t care how I sound.
I heard it again and I saw what you mean.
But that’s b’cus I need a bit of time VCing or recording to recover my pre-trained voice.
Have you tried reading passages from a book or poetry aloud for recording?
Yup, I did; it does improve my voice overall.
Are you recording on a phone then uploading the sound file?
Egypt, thx
@humble dome
you missed some word's pronunciation, would you like to learn pronunciation with me to improve?
Would you mind telling me what word I pronounced not so well
not at all : D, I can do a in depth correction or just superficial?
you tell me
It's not necessary to thoroughly examine it, just one word or two I need to work the most on. I can read the IPA and such, but when I hear myself I'm a bit biased and don't know how to improve on my own
so, you know, that's why I ask here in the first place:D
(for starters, I think I could work on the audio's quality lol, wouldn't you say so)
Tldr; superficial
some intonation ~ stress patterns are weird
th-stopping (maybe that was intended?)
'community' usually sounds like /kəmjʉ́nɪti/, not c/ɔ/mmunity (the unstressed vowel is reduced to /ə/)
the /t/ of 'too' had pretty strong affrication from you. This kind of pronunciation is normal in SSB, and perhaps in NYC English, but not too common in other dialects (/t/ sounds close to [t͡s]) (maybe that was intended...?)
'eyes' sounded like 'ice' (devoicing)
I know some people may not be pleased with that word "f*ck" I'm sorry I had to read it loud.
thank you!!!
I do have a lot of work to do on entonation. Rising and falling tones
I don't really hear my t sounding like an affricate. (That must be my bias)
I do have problems with saying an s as a z and viceversa. And also pronouncing other vowels instead of a schwa, which makes me second guess myself mid-conversation
sometimes
hi there
@hoary spearcan I send the feedback in the text channel?
Yeah, either way is fine to me! Thank you so much!!!!!
Serious question
Does anybody feel like their pronunciation gets worse whenever they try to read out loud? Or is it only me coz my pronunciation was way good before than it is now
Same, I think its cuz of pattern recognition from my mother tongue

Great 💯
Hi, I know this is from a couple days, but I just wanted to kindly correct you? You said you like "poetries" so I'm assuming, you are trying to say the plural form of the word "poetry"
The plural form would be poems, you like to read poetry, in this case, you are trying to say "I like to read poems."
Poetry is the art of writing poems, while poems are the physical objects/tangible forms of poetry, that you can see or hold. (In this case, since you said "read" but poems can be spoken, yes.
Also, "poetries" I wanna validate you, and say you are technically correct in using that word. It just doesn't fall in American English. It is used in some South and South East asian versions of English. So, if that's true to your culture or region, don't stop, be expressive of yourself.
Just thought to add, it is not correct in American English, however.
Thanks so much for ur explanation, I appreciate it
Okay, I'm going to send something here. You can copy it for your reference or use it to study this topic a bit more, which I think will be easy for you to understand. If anything, ask me for clarification
• Abstract Concepts: Ideas or qualities you can’t physically touch
(Examples: knowledge, advice, information).
• Liquids & Gases: Substances that flow or fill space
(Examples: water, milk, air).
• Tiny Substances: Things made of tiny parts that are too many to count
(Examples: sand, rice, salt).
• Mass Categories: Group of collection of different objects
(Examples: furniture, luggage).
• Studies/Activities:
(Examples: mathematics, history, soccer).
These are all uncountable nouns
Your pronunciation is stunning. 😶🌫️
PS: No I'm not the author of this quote. Actually, I don't even know who wrote it.
Hey guys, This is my home screen wallpaper. What do you think? It looks great. right?
anyone is interested in reading a short essay C1/C2 level together? Happening now in the book reading channel
Hi, would anyone be interested in reading a couple pages from a book I own?
It covers conversation examples, such as, "introducing yourself" and other mini lessons on basic conversation skills
@ me, if yes
Does it need to be fluent? I wanted to improve my pronuncitation, if theres room for that, I'd be down if it isnt too long
We will remember, no worries
Heloo
Hi there,
What up
Just hanging in what's up with u?
Just chilling by the river
Cool🤌
Mhm
Wanna practice?
I don't know.
🙁
Go ahead and read this out loud.
Hey, no it doesn't need to be fluent at all. We read a couple pages of dialogue/conversations between two people, introducing themselves and getting to know each other.
It was really just conversational skills, and then we quickly touched base on, or reviewed, simple phrases and introductions. Sometimes we went over something that didn't make sense, to get a better understanding
It was really fun, if there is time today, I'll be in VC today, and mention it here again
Yeah I would definitely join in and participate. I would appreciate it so much if you could indeed tell in advance that you're going to hop on a vc
You have a great British accent.✨
@stone pendant Are you from India or close?
y?
Where are you from?

From this small sample I heard some words that where not pronounced like U.K., do you want to learn to strictly use U.K. pronunciation or U.S.?

Hello!!!
I had a video of yours on watch later, but cant see it anymore. I wanted to review the ipa, even more so bc you explain things very easily and naturally
😅 😅 😅 😅 😅 😅 it's gone 😢
Probably the noise reduction thing. Thanks. It happens all the time at the beginning.
i just went back to listen to the first one. yeap, ur right. sounded like ar"k".
it's the "T" sound. noise reduction problem i guess
😅
May I ask what happened?;(
@hoary spear I was thinking about making it with other symbols

Maybe I re-upload it later 🤔
The whole channel is gone;( Did somebody hack your account?
I deleted it
What!???? I subscribed, I was watching a short and all of a sudden I couldn't anymore. What happened if I may?
I hope you do. I'm rlly looking forward to watching more content on the tube
do you want me to mark those (in a video)?
@ember hatch are you there?
yes?
girl what
Im going to be busy 🙃
then why are you starting the event 😭 😭
But people can come and you can help if they have questions
I am not substituting for you
Just talk about diphtongs or smth
😭
😅
Can you note questions on word and I'll answer them for next week ...
Sorry, I'm not doing this. I'm happy to answer when people when they ask me informally, but I don'r like being put ina teacher position tbh
these people are chatting anyways. They aren't talking about pronunciation
This was your opportunity 💔
What on earth do you mean? My opportunity to be forced into a position of teaching that I don't want?
I was kidding. To be fair that's a hard position to be in, even more so bc you almost got tricked into it
It was not a trick
I was genuinely asking for a hand, not problem if not possible 💀 😔
Well, Idk if you two are friends, but it sounded like it at worst, maybe you could have gotten in and clarified instead, but maybe you did. I just made a tongue in cheek in comment, nothing serious here
Also, I know you're a great teacher, and you must have your reasons
👍
you are the most charismatic leader ever
we follow you
we pledge allegiance
I noticed that I mispronounced some words, like the pronunciation of the word 'gamble,' which diphthongizes in some accents. Anyhow, I would appreciate it if you could provide me with feedback.
the vowel in art sounds too front(ed?) [aːt] type, for SSB it should be closer to [ɑː], [ɑːt]
pronouncing gamble with an [æ] type vowel wouldn't be a mistake though
(I guess you can say that pre-nasal TRAP is diphthongized to [eə ~ ɛə] in many varieties of GA)
Thanks, but I don't understand that [ɑːt] notation; I have no knowledge of it. Could you please provide the pronunciation so I can follow along? Perhaps before and after the fix
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/art
you can listen to the UK audio to get an approximation
thx but i don't get it anyway.

hello
@ember hatch
Scella, do you have any suggestions or favorite British podcasts for intermediate/advanced learners?
If you mean podcats specifically about learning, English, then, no, I don't really have any suggestions
Consume media you enjoy
in the accent you aim for
Not specifically for learners 😅
Oh, then I like the Magnus Archives personally. It's a 'horror fiction audiodrama podcast' (as per Wikipedia). They have British accents if you're into that sort of thing
Thank you so much!
@subtle phoenix where are you from?
@stone pendant I'll make your video 📹, can I send it here?
Yesss finally someone with the same struggle 😭 in my case i think it’s probably because my mouth tends to get more tensed up when i speak louder? Not sure if it’s also the case for you tho, are you comfortable with sending a voice message of you speaking loudly?
yes, pls
anyone who wants help with pronunciation can dm me 🦕 (rawwwwwr)
Can I send you a message?
Yes :)🦕
Love this frog! I have gone through that storm. This adorable frog quote is talking about when you are stripped from everything to nothing. That is when you truly find out what you are made of when you go through that fire.
meow
precisely
Cow-tch
Cownt
To me they aren't similar since the vowel makes the big difference but Id thank you since it is worth mentioning
well, everyone comes from a different linguistic background, just like some people don't understand that b#tches and beaches aren't the same
kowch / kownt
Great idea. Lol
I'm curious why both of you decided to represent them as 'k/cowch' and 'k/cownt' (with 'ow') instead of 'kawch' and 'kawnt'
@subtle phoenix @stray lantern
Does the sound not start as 'a' and end as 'w'? 'ow', to me, looks like the sound starts at 'o' and goes to 'w' like the sound in 'show', 'fro', and 'oaf'
You ended up helping the learner ultimately, so I'm not saying this as criticism. I'm simply curious about the reason for this consistent representation of that sound as ⟨ow⟩, rather than the more intuitive ⟨aw⟩, by both a native and a non-native. Surely there is a reason that this pattern has arisen
I mean the /aʊ/ phoneme, to be clear
