Just been looking into it. For that to work, you should know what those symbols mean
And What's the best way of getting to know the written text? And is there some sort of textbook somewhere on the internet?
I understand but once nobody tells me where to start searching for IPA, the only thing I see is odd text ment to show how words need to be spoken phonetically.
This is for RP?

How is my pronunciation and accent?
That was really good , you sound like a native
Really good, but where are you from?
I can tell you're probably not American because you speak too fast, and your intonation is a bit monotone, which isn't typical for most American English speakers. But your accent sounds American overall, so it's hard to say for sure.
thank you sir. appreciate it. 🤍
do you have any comments for me?
i'm from egypt sir.
thanks a lot for this valuable comment sir. i'll work on my intonation. i hope my speech is clear and understandable overall.
also, i have a problem with connected speech, that's why i was reading that. sometimes my tongue misses one or two words as i'm speaking, mostly when i'm trying to speak faster than usual. I still don't know how to fix that.
I'd appreciate it if you have any suggestions to help me overcome this hurdle.
if you want, you can feel free to avoid "sir", it often makes one sound overly formal
it makes sense that some people want to use this, cuz in many languages it just is mandatory to be polite and use some form of polite words/pronouns/anything. Like in german you'd use "Sie" to mean "you" but formally, and "Ihr/Ihre/Ihr/Ihre/Ihren/Ihrem/Ihrer/Ihres" to mean "your" but formally, or in polish you'd use "Pan/Pani/Państwo" to mean "you" but formally
in english you can just say "you" and this is usually alright
if you want some additional politeness then just use keywords like "please", "sorry", "excuse me". There are ways to sound formal and polite, but it's usually about playing with some more advanced words, like "Could you please let me go?" can become "Would you allow me to go, please?" or something. but that's often about intuition and if you are stressed/a beginner then it may be too difficult to reform stuff
how did you reach to that level?
Your accent is really good, but you sound a little foreign when you say 'sir,' and your English feels too formal. I think you should slow down a bit because talking fast makes it sound less natural. Americans don't usually speak that fast (depends on the state though). You also sound kind of like AI or a robot (which is not a bad thing, but it's kinda monotone)
But honestly, I'm curious how did you get your accent to sound this real? It actually sounds like you're live in the U.S. Did you use any special techniques? Is this how you normally talk, or do you think there's still a bit of an Egyptian accent in there? Because it's really good. I never would've guessed you were Egyptian. I actually thought you were some American messing around. The only thing that gave it away was when you asked about your accent because that's not something a native speaker would ask.
But seriously, great job!
I wonder if the accent oracle would detect an English accent. It's usually pretty accurate, but I'm not sure why it's showing Russian and Spanish here.

mainly shadowing native speakers, but practice is key.
Alright, then. I'll keep that in mind while practicing in the future.
The way I got it to that level is through shadowing native speakers. it's quite an effective method.
It says English with a little bit of spanish and chinese. 😂

He sounds Scandinavian
So he sounds it too? I see
Is it the intonation?
The way his tone goes up and down, I mean
I don't know, he just sounds Scandinavian to me
He doesn't really sound like a non native speaker
apart from the little hints of accent that I can pick up on
Alrighty alrighty, thank you
Just wanted to see if natives would pick up on the accent, cuz it was really hard for me to notice
I'd say I wouldn't have been paying attention if you hadn't asked about his accent. Scandinavian accents sound cool, and since they speak English so well, I wouldn't really consider him a non native speaker
I mean, idk what qualifies someone as a native speaker, that's entierly dependant on how they grew up. But ye, Scandanavian accents are nice. I just could faintly pick up on something but wasn't sure :p
hey
any native speakers here?
Can you guys send a recording of yourself saying a sentence or two? 👼
You sound so robotic! Do you want feedback on your accent, or maybe you would like to see if people can guess where you are from?
there's no problem in fact I would be honored!
My guess is that you are from Asia. And as for your accent, I can hear some subtle Asian hints, but they are not strong. It sounds kind of Americanized
You are correct
also what do you mean by I sound robotic? is there any part from my accent that you would wish for me to improve on in order to not sound robotic?
It might sound like you're not showing much emotion, but it's just the way the intonation comes across
it's not a bad thing tho
some Americans kinda sound robotic
it can actually be a characteristic of some accents in America
Cuz complacency sucks
I guess they endeavour to reach perfection. I knew someone who was obsessed with sounding as close to a native as possible. It can be because of being ashamed of your accent and wanting to eliminate every foreign minutia, it can be an admiration of an accent so strong that you can't but want to mirror it to the tiniest detail, and it can simply be a belief that your accent is flawed, despite that not being the case. Whatever it may be, there is nothing wrong in wanting to improve
I want to sound like a cowboy, you know with that 'yehaw' accent 🤠
You can do it
There are plenty of Texan tourists in Galway, and it would be awkward to run into one and do a bad impression of their accent. It would also come across as weird here in Ireland
I want an Irish accent but I wouldn't dare do a bad immetation of one in front of an Irish person
I so would get punched
Irish accents can be tricky, so I'd be careful with it
You won't get punched or anything, people are polite
and no one's going to say anything uless you are really taking the piss and it comes off as mockery
But people would definitely think you are a bit of a weirdo
The only reason I would like to be able to put an Irish accent on, if not have it as my natural accent cuz that would be a huge amount of work, is cuz I like Irish accents, so I certainly wouldn't be doing it mockingly, but I'm so miserably bad at imitation that it might come off that way
People thinking I'm weird is another thing lol
It's uncommon that someone learns an Irish accent, so Irish people are likely not accustomed to it
You don't need an accent at all. Just by looking at you I can tell if you are from Ireland
no need to say a word
I mean, I'm decisively Arab-looking so that's pretty easy
But can you tell an English person from an Irish person from a Scottish person just by form?
I'd say I can. Not the Scots, but the Brits. It's the way some of them walk (like they own this country), their clothes, their facial features
I can tell very easily that you are a Brit tourist
hii
They also tend to view everyone here as poor farmers
good evening to you all
so even if they sound or look British, they probably think Ireland is a shithole and that the UK is better
Pretty much every single British person I've met has told me the UK is miles better in every way
I often confuse Irish and Scottish accents (though I'm getting better at it). But yeah, it would be impossible for me to tell you all apart just by how you look. I haven't met any Brits irl before, it's a shame they're so, hmm, supercilious towards the Irish people
Most of the Irish folk I've encountered online have been quite pleasant
Just say you are from the UK
There are so many Arabs in the UK who consider themselves British, so I wouldn't be surprised
But I've never stepped a foot in England lmao
Unfortunately, there are some people here who can be really racist towards anyone, including Irish people
I read a story about a guy from Mayo being told to 'go home, ye immigrant' by a junkie from Dublin
but the guy was at home-in his own country
But yeah, those people are ignorant, uneducated and mostly come from shitholes like Dublin
I absolutely hate that place
Yeah I heard there is some controversy over immigrant at the moment. I don't know much about that. It's a shame these people are about, but there are always some bad people :/
Saying that to their fellow Irishman is a pretty crazy
Some people act like immigrants should be grateful just for being in Ireland, as if they own the country. Those are the people that live in social housing, rely on benefits or earn minimum wage, yet complain that immigrants are taking over
Truth is, without connections or a good qualifications, an immigrant has no chance of getting a job here
The people on benefits living in social housing seem to experience the housing crisis the most
more than those who pay taxes to support them
Yeah, those people are just imbeciles :/
i’ve been trying to sound more american for a while now, watching pronunciation vids and none really helped, idk if its my flow/placement that doesn’t make me sound american or my pronunciation? since i think my pronunciation is pretty americanized
Why do you want an American accent in the first place? Are you going to a college in America? Just asking 😀
how do you fix that?
Yeah i am actually, haha
wjere ra you from?
You are understandable, but you kinda sound like one of my friends from Brazil. I don't think you are from Asia, but I wouldn't be too surprised if you were. Your natural accent sounds better than your somewhat American accent
It's hard for me to say how to improve your intonation
@admin all me to open camera.
Damn rly??? I thought sounding monotonous was always bad
Which accents have that?
I'm not American, but I was talking to a New Yorker I met here in Galway, and she said the American accent sounds really flat. I am not saying sounding monotone is a good thing, but it's not necessarily a bad thing either
Ahh I see
Where are you from again?
pretty sure "isael" is irish
it may be possible that he speaks both English and Irish as native languages
Ireland
I don't speak Irish
Ooo I see
No fast track to it.
You gotta learn and practice daily.
Practice
Something that has helped me a lot is talking to native speakers either IRL or in VC. My accent has faded a bit over time doing that (It is still there though)
no shit
shut up, practice is essential if you want to get better at it

this record is more understandable and clear
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California ,how do you pronounce livin' it up,and also all the ing+it , how to pronunce ŋɪ ,i always pronounce it more like nɪ
You sound arab, id say Egyptian though.
jamica
yea
Hey??
You sound fluent, but the microphone sucks.
You sound like someone from the Middle East who's watched a lot of American TV
I'm having a hard time hearing you because of the mic quality, but from what I can tell, your voice sounds quite high-pitched and a bit zesty
It sounds more like you are mocking Americans than actually doing an American accent
Arab? your voice like someone from middle east
Bruh, the mocking part is so true, i dunno, i just over emphasize thinking that would make me sound like it.
My mic sucksssss, i actually have a better mic, but I don't have the right adaptor for it 💖
North african or Middle Eastern
Does anyone could communicate with me and correct my accent? I’m looking for a person who possessed British accent
Yes
I can

That would be fantastic

Yes we shall.
I accepted your request
We are now friends.
Alright I’ll dm u real quick
Ok
I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but the accent comes off a bit high-pitched and it kind of sounds like a gay accent. I'd suggest slowing down a little and not forcing it. The more relaxed your mouth is, the easier it is to pronounce words naturally. Try saying some words you find tricky, first force them out, then relax your mouth completely and try again without any tension. You'll notice a difference
It sounds a bit like a stereotypical female movie accent, maybe with some African American influence
Maybe they're gay through
Although they may have intaken a lot of gay creators' content without being gay. Reminds me of this Reddit story of someone learning Italian (or maybe Japanese?) and apparently sounding like a mafioso (or Yakuza?) cuz of the shows they watched. Not sure if it's true, but it seems plausible
Damn I never thought of that. Gonna try that
can someone please give me some sentence to try pronounce and help me fix if there anything i pronounce wrongly?
Rescue efforts are continuing in Myanmar, three days after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the country. The military government there says the number of people killed has now risen to 2,056, with more than 3,000 injured - but getting information out of Myanmar is difficult and there are questions over the scale of the disaster.
After listening to trump's speeches many times, I started pronouncing some words like him (for example china or good)
American presidents are always priceless, every single one of these has their own mannerism and ways of speaking lol
Egyptian would have been my guess
The only reason would be the word 'thousand'
Idk why but it sounded pretty Egyptian to my ears
can you guess where am i from?
"Many of us might only seek out physical therapists if we are recovering from accidental injuries or surgery. However, medical experts say these specialists can also help prevent many health problems if they are seen on a regular basis."
Asian?
Are you from somewhere in Asia?
Why Asia?
You don't sound like you are from the Middle East
You need to pronounce your final letters more. I think Asian languages tend to have simple syllable codas with not much clustering so that's probably why
ahh I see
i'm from middle east xd
hmm
We should have gussed since you don't seem to struggle with th
That's interesting - you sound quite Asian to me
So yeah, 1. pronounce final clusters, 2. don't blend your words so much, 3. less drawling
You speak in a very relaxed way and don't overpronounce your words
Middle Eastern accents tend to sound a bit stronger or harsher in comparison
Thank you guys so much
Syrian
Ah I see I see
Y'all are getting better at guessing
can you give me an example for number 2
'physical therapists' and 'on a regular basis' mainly, but the whole thing doesn't have much emphasis to set words apart better

This is undeniably true, i have intaken lot of gay content, I did not know it would affect my accent but I am still often perplexed which accent i should be on whether american or british, in American i sound gay and in british I sound like an exhaling bull.
If you'd like to learn more about the gay accent, there is a Wiki page on it. But yeah, it's hard to pick. You can do it based on a few factors: which sounds best to you? Which is easiest for you? Which is closest to your current natural accent?
American is quite close as we have the hard r sound in my native and even the softened d sound.
Heyy guys , I need a native American speaker who can help me with my american accent training... I promise to be regular and consistent I just need your help, if anyone is interested they can dm me , thankiess

I have got difficult to pronounce "Th" sound
Place your tongue beween your teeth and blow air out, using your voice for words like (this) and no voice for words like "think"

How did you learn English
Just from YouTube teachers and people here, with the internet learning things has become easier and more accessible than ever!
Pretty good. Although the mic makes it a bit unclear.
Sorry about that
I may start recording from my phone
It's okay.. 😂 I appreciate your effort. Your accent is really good.
Your accent doesn't sound as Middle Eastern anymore, but I still pick up on a bit of it
Say "the" with a voiced th sound
vibrating sound with tongue between teeth
put your tongue lightly between the teeth and make a soft buzzing sound with your voice
Hello, guys!
What are the best ways to improve in your pronunciation, in your opinion? I've been doing shadowing exercises for some time and it helps but I'd like to try more things. I have a very strong hispanic accent and trying to get better, hmm. So, I made a clone of my voice with 11Labs, made it have an American accent, and then I use it to create phrases that I repeat aloud until it sounds very similar.
That's a very good idea
bro I'mma give u an advice
listen to music
and try to repeat with the singer/rapper
i improved my accent and pronunciation with that way
i watch "Bridgerton"
i've learned so many new words from this series
Watch The Boondocks
Best way to improve your english
Okay, haha
It's classic english, i have watched it too.
Is Bridgerton good
The best way to improve your pronunciation is to pronounce something wrong around my dad. He won't let you hear the end of it.
No.
This sounds good, but it doesn't quite sound like your usual accent-it kind of sounds like you're trying out a different one
At first, it sounded like a mix of Irish, British and American accents all rolled into one
But honestly, you are doing a great job!
ur right, not my usual
i got mixed
guys I have to ask, IA is a good way for learn english and pronounce?

How to pronounce the
How is my pronunciation?
Wilbur and Orville Wright are the American inventors who made a small engine-powered flying machine. They proved that flight without the aid of gas-filled balloons was possible.
Wilbur Wright was born in 1867 near Melville, Indiana. His brother Orville was born four years later in Dayton, Ohio.
As they grew up, the Wright brothers experimented with mechanical things. Later, the Wright brothers began to design their own flying machine. They used ideas they had developed from earlier experiments with a toy helicopter, kites, the printing machine and bicycles.
Good attempt
But you need to work more on your T's
And you said balloons wrong
do i forget to pronounce them?
It's not that transparent
Take for example later
I think you're trying the flap T but it's not so clear
i pronounced it like lader
I knew you were trying to do the flap but you need to work more on it
Also bicycles pronunciation was wrong
But other than that, you did an amazing job
So
Flap T & Ts
balloons, bicycles
how about the final letters, i tried to focus on pronounce them tho
and btw thank you @sage glen
You completely dropped some of them like experimented, you didn't pronounce the -ed
But not to worry a lot of americans drop the -ed's if it's followed by a consonant
@old marsh
Thanks allat
Anytime! Keep up the good work, you're doing great
I stopped learning from along time but from time to time i try to do some reading exercises
Thank you bro :3
Don't let critiques demoralize you bro, I used to sound way worse than you
it actually doesn't, it encourages me to to work more on problems :3.
Let's go, that's my mentality
it's not an actual d; it's a quick tab of the tongue against the alveolar ridge. It's the same sound as the Spanish r in 'pero'
Ooh i totally forgot this
There are two common sounding, and some say it's a difference between us and uk English, but i think it's more related to the noun that follows. There is a "thuh" and "thee" sound. The thuh works better when follows by a noun starting with a hard consonant, and the thee works better with a noun starting with a vowel or soft consonant.
Thee onion
Thuh ball
But it's really going to come down to individual accents, and it's all about the sound flowing from the definite article to the noun while maintaining the word sound separation.
Hi
A!! You must be the indefinite article
Do you pronounce your name "Ah" or "Ae"
please be realistic, I'm 18, level around high c1-low c2 and I've been living in the us for 8 months, Ill go back to italy in 2 and after a year ill probably study in the UK for 3 and in the US for 2. I want to become an actor (and also a software engineer) so I need to take away my accent. Be realistic, how likely is it that I can get rid of my accent, or at least sound nativelike. After 8 months here ive improved so much but im still far away
first take a deep breath, and second try hard
but how
You need to learn the basics of accent training like watch some YouTube videos to learn the foundation
@rapid garnet then after understanding the basics like tongue placement, vowels and consonants pronunciation, lip movements… move on to shadowing - copy the speakers
@rapid garnet listen to each speaker who you wanna talk like and then copy their flow ya get me
Then practice till it becomes like second nature
🫡
I've always been fascinated by space. Watching documentaries about the universe and learning about planets, stars, and black holes amazes me. It's incredible to think about how vast and mysterious the cosmos really is.
Please gimme y’all feedback 🙏🙏
You’re good
Someone that speak Portuguese please could help me about how can I say that? (Sick of looking at it) I would like if write how is the pronunciation.
Hi! 4guin Do you still need help?
Hii
Black American accent? Really? I can't quite tell where you're from. I think I pick up a slight Asian influence, but it's subtle and honestly I'm not even sure
It's hard to believe you're Black because you don't sound like it at all. I'd believe it more if you said you were white
Are you from Brazil, Portugal, or maybe a Spanish or Portuguese speaking country in South America?
Your pronunciation is very clear and easy to understand!
The intonation is just a little off, but you are doing really well!
You are right , I'm from Uruguay haha , what words do spanish pronounce to make you notice they come from there or to realize it's spanish accent?
I think they're trying to develop a black accent as a non-native
Yesss exactly
I’m not black I’m south Asian 🤣
Maybe my intonation is off and my ‘t’ and ‘d’ may sound Asian 🤔
Thanks for the feedback @cunning mica
Thank you
I feel like the a.a.v.e accent is much cooler 😇😇
threw and through had the same pronunciantion?
For the African American accent?
yes
It's a bit hard to say exactly what makes it clear you're a Spanish speaker. You're easy to understand and your pronunciation is really good. But there's just something about your accent that sounds Spanish overall. Like when you said 'forecast' - it should be pronounced 'for-kast,' not 'for-kaste.' So it's small things like that that give it away
You don't sound South Asian, but you also don't sound like a Black American. I think people might have a hard time guessing where you're from, especially online. You could be Brazilian - I know someone who sounds a lot like you. You could also be Asian - there's a very slight hint of an Asian influence in your accent. Or you could be white - I'm not sure exactly where from, but I'd probably believe it
Tongue Twisters:
"Pad kid poured curd pulled cod"
"Which wristwatches are Swiss wristwatches?"
"Lesser leather never weathered wetter weather better"
"Give Papa a cup of proper coffee in a copper coffee cup."
Read aloud each sentence above repetitively.
An actor and a software engineer. Gonna be honest first time I’ve ever seen someone say they wanted to do both of those.
Granted I have a friend from Slovenia/Italian border region who is also an actor and they have absolutely 0 noticeable accent when speaking English. So I think for some actors when method acting can hide it completely which is wild.
there will be a play tomorrow
Hi
Yes please
about what
How much of my accent do you understand? (in percent)
You're about 95% understandable, but you're kind of mumbling like some words sound a bit off
Alright Thank you Iseal <3.
You sound like my Japanese friend. I can understand you by the way.
@old marsh First of all, thanks for posting your speech here! It takes courage and determination to ask for help and improve yourself!
I would say that I noticed mostly a wonderful pronunciation of words. You took time to think about each word pronounce it which shows your determination! Especially ( Actions ) part in 0:10!!!
I noticed you used intonation in your speech which was another wonderful addition!!!
But I noticed you weren’t confident when you were speaking, but by more practice you could reduce it…
Here are a few things you could improve yourself on -
differs from place to place. - differed sounded like different
But about 99% - 99% sounded like ninety ninety
Breathes air- breathes doesn’t sound nice when pronouncing
At some point that does not meet
Pollution guidelines - meet sounded like need
Killed about 7 million people each year - killed sounded like cared
Health experts - experts sounded like expires
The UN health agency - agency sounded not nice when pronouncing
There are some actions individuals can take to protect themselves even in the worlds polluted cities- even in the worlds polluted cities sounded very unclear.
So at the end personally I think right now I could understand about 85% of your speech. Maybe if you choose an English accent that your interesting in learning? If you don’t want to learn an accent for English…. Then try practicing pronunciation of simple words: what I mean is try practicing vowel and consonant sounds until it becomes easier for you.
After this maybe your confidence might increase and you will be at a 100%!!!
i really appreciate the job you did
thank you so much buddy
No probs twin
Hello guys. I’m currently struggling to pronounce the flap t sound. As an Arabic speaker, it is almost impossible to hide the r sound. I just want to know is the flap t sound, like in water, a soft d, r, or t.?
you can see at the Event announcement or schedule
Flap t is a short Arabic r
like the Arabic 'mara' ('woman'), if you pronounce it like in Arabic then add an English r at the end you're basically saying 'mutter'
The vowels are slightly off but the idea I'm trying to convey is that the Arabic R is the same as the American flapped t and d
The English R is sometimes (and the easiest way to say it is) a retroflex approximant. 'retroflex' is fancy-talk for 'with your tongue bent backwards'. Approximant means your tongue is pretty far from the roof of your mouth (so no air turbulence is happening)
I am unique IK
I love CS but to be honest I love acting more
CS is both part of my backup plan and my normal plan
(since CS is supposedly flexible I could do it from wherever I want)
.
Brother your full name is on full display. Just an observation.
Also even as a native I feel like I would be absolute trash on this exam…

ooos
ooops
Are you German or American? Or just Italian lol.

hiya
heyyo
I agree with @ember hatch , 1.you need to make a u turn with your tongue, towards your throat…. 2.And then bring your tongue forward…
It’s called a tongue flap for a reason: you bend your tongue backward, and then bring it forward - the forward bringing of tongue creates the r sound.
In Arabic and South Indian languages, the tongue just vibrates in the middle of the mouth roof…. But in English the r doing flaps from forward to backward or the inverse… but the flap needs to be there!
No that's not English r, that's English flapped t/d
English r is different
The Arabic r isn't a trill, also, unless it's geminated
so the 'the tongue just vibrates in the middle' is not true unless there is a shadda on the r
Hi, I’m learning a speaking English, who can help for me?
italian
but my great-grandfather was from vienna
I can understand you 100%, but you do seem to be mumbling in some parts of the recording. H did a great job explaining it to you.
idk bro i tried to foucs on pronounce the final words because i used to ignore them
Hi, best advice Jonathan is to start chatting in the voice channels and listening to other speak and then speaking yourself
Hi! I’m working on a school project about the role of culture in learning foreign languages, and I need your help. Could you please take 2–3 minutes to answer my questionnaire? It’s completely anonymous and your answers will really help me with my research. Thank you so much!

Well, it's natural to sound bad if you're not practicing
Ed endings like past tense
Like I watched the new minecraft movie
Exactly 💯
Even though we study grammar more than anything, when we speak we forget everything.
One thing you should know
Grammar is your biggest enemy when learning a language
It's useless
Knowing grammar won't help you to speak
Learn it naturally
By reading books

At first, I thought you were from Asia because of your accent. You don't sound Middle Eastern to me at all. Your pronunciation is really good-very clear and easy to understand. You're doing a great job!
hi
I noticed that your English is great, I understood everything, the whole message.
But there was a problem in your words, I felt like your words were very few… and that if you could use more words other than the basic noun and verbs, you could eventually tell us more and be able to share more and also be able to make the audience listen more easily.
So, I felt that we got the basic idea of what you were saying but… I recommend you listen to more tv shows and movies, or TikTok’s in English, so that your your English vocabulary ( word choices) increase… in no time you will be from a small stream to a huge waterfall… continuously talking in English without any stops along the way. 5/10 ( try repeating them)
Your pronunciation sounds good, personally it sounds middle eastern, but it’s understandable.
6/10
I’ve had friends and elders who talk like that, and some of them even work in offices and talk like that. So it’s not issue.

Heres a reading I did about the book of Daniel , could anyone say something about my pronunciation?, I'm trying to sound american though I know i struggle with the ''THE'' and every word i must say with the ''a'' vocal.
I can’t give detailed feedback on your pronunciation, but you said ‘standing’ more like ‘stuhnding,’ with an ‘uh’ sound instead of ‘a.’ I can still hear a Spanish accent. But overall, you’re very easy to understand, and I had no trouble understanding what you were saying.
@river lance it sounds great, with a spanish tinge - 8/10, some words are a bit hard to understand like "iron" you pronounced the "r" sound..... we dont say the r sound....but it was amazing no cap twin
@river lance if you want to build an american accent, i recommend these 5 videos, it builds the basic foundation of learning the accent. After that just practise alooooot by repeating people you wanna sound like.
Alright H , thanks, and thanks to isael too for correcting me
I was just watching a video and the person was slowly writing out the word "Sound", but he had only written "sou" so I was pronouncing it like how you would say "soup", English has a lot of quirks like this, why is sound pronounced the way it is, instead of being pronounced similar to wound? Nobody knows lol
maybe it has some history
'Sound' comes from 'soun' from 'son'/'sun'. English has a tendency to insert 'd' after 'n', so 'sun' became 'sund'. Before 'nd' and some other clusters short vowels were lengthened in Early Middle English. So the /u/ of 'sund' became [uː] (like the 'oo' in 'boot'; 'soond', [suːnd]). Words pronounced with with [uː] (the sound in 'boot') in Early Middle English (1100 to 1250 English) started being pronounced with [ʊu̯] in the 1500s (Late Middle English, 1400–1500) cuz of the Great Vowel Shift (1400–1600). Then that kept shifting over time until the 1900s and became [aʊ̯] which is Modern English 'ou' in 'sound'. Refer to the first picture to see how the evolution went (if you can read IPA). Some respelling likely happaned to change the 'u' into 'ou', since in Middle English ⟨ou⟩ represented /uː/ often.
As for stuff like 'soup', 'group' and 'acoustic', those were borrowed into English with /uː/ in the 1600s, so they didn't undergo the shift from /uː/ to /aʊ̯/.
As for 'wound', I've looked into it and am not really sure why it wouldn't have become /aʊ̯/ since it's not a late borrowing. My best guess would be the fact it starts with /w/ somehow affected the evolution of the vowel in it, which is not unheard of (cf. wand-band, wonder-ponder, work-fork). Some sources do list that it used to be pronounced with /aʊ̯/.
how is my pronounciation? Also I feel like the way I talk may sound muffled( not necessarily about the mic but more so about how I vocalise sounds ) so I would be glad to hear what you have to say about that or if you have any advice on how to improve my speech
Try to speak slower
thank you for your suggestion
Holaaaaa
Anybody want to practice English conversation with me?
Sure
Where you wanna go?
Maybe in my inbox?
I thought like a vc
Hi I think I hear a bit of a French accent-are you from France? You kind of sound French to me. Just a small thing: try to slow down a little when you speak. Now it feels a bit rushed, and your intonation goes up and down in a way that makes it a bit hard to understand
I don't get you😫
Why do you have a thing for guessing where people are from? 😂
I’m not French but I’ve been told that before ( probably because of how I pronounce the r)
Voice Chat
AAAAAAAA ok ok
thank you for your advice I’ll try to not rush so much when I speak
So B3 - Intermediate?
idk
Not bad
But you want to speak more than you write to improve your speaking skills
And I'd suggest reading books out loud
Helped me a lot
You've got some work to do to reach that level
Yes I have to get better
But yeah, we all started from scratch and built our way up
I couldn't understand a word they say
Back in the days
But after couple years of dedication and commitment, reached a decent level
Still not complacent though
Ok thanks
Do people give feedback to our voice records here?
Yes
Just record it and people will give you feedback
Thanks for the advice
Could someone pronounce 'anteroinferiorly located' please
I appreciate that you've tried to help me but are you sure this is the pronunciation? I'd like to be certain. I mean no offence to you but I don't know if you're fluent or not and so there may be the possibility that you've mispronounced the word, and that is why I enquire further as to your assuredness in your pronunciation. Again, I don't mean to be rude; I just want to be sure
No, actually i thought you were challenging if we could pronounce this word xs
Ahh, I see! That's alright. I wa actually asking because I don't know how to pronounce it and can find no recordings of the word sadly

This person obviously has an accent
I just want to hear how it would sound naturally by a fluent speaker with a weak non-native accent or a native speaker
i have another example but i can't send it here idk why

DM
As a spanish native speaker this mixture of merged words i can say this word means antero-inferior
= a body(not necesarily human though it can be so too) which position is before something below a body.
Also this word is usually taken and used in anatomy topics so it might be more related to some part of a muscle's body.
So the whole word would be related not about a physic conception but about something metaphorical becuse of the "ly" added.
So : antero= something it's before and "inferior" positioned the inferior place though "ly" would put the entire word would be put in philosophical ideas and conceptions like that.
So it would be like
"entaro-enfarior-ly"
it's an anatomical term
not philosophical
idk how to read 'entaro-enfarior-ly' tbh
looks like portuguese not english
You emphasize infériorly more than the other words
I think that would be posteroinferior to the, for example, chest, not anteroinferior
But yeah I'm only asking abt pronuncation I know what he word means
/ˌæn.tə.roʊ.ɪnˈfɪr.i.ər.li/
Bro this word will be stock in my thoughts forever because of you xd
an – like "ant"
tero – "tuh-roh"
inferior – "in-FEER-ee-er"
ly – "lee"
here is another useful method to pronounce it
Hope so, cause I ain't sure
😂😂😂 bru you killed me
I think you pronounced it very well
Idk about that, my friends make fun of my R's
thx.
I'm doing great
Great
Where are you from?
Hi guy's 👋
Can someone correct my american attempt accent?
I'm trying to sound the most standard american accent possible.
Is somebody listening the audios here?
Yes though as long as there is a guy willing to correct you otherwise you will need to wait for it.
I cannot attach the m4a file of the audio 😦

Because it's useless, they don't teach you to speak
See it's all on you
If you wanna be good at something, then do some research study on your own
Agree
Well,
I'm struggling in VC because I don't have any topic to talk about it , can you suggest simple topics to speak it ?
I can't make up topics myself
I just listen to what others have to say and jump in at the chance
Ok thanks
Try to copy YouTubers sentences, say how they say it Mimic them
@silent surge you need to listen to more English stuff, and try to repeat it
Ok , thanks

Hi, can anyone please help me with my pronunciation. Thaaaanks 🙂
It is from a youtube video about shadowing technice, if you guys needs the source of what I'm talking about in this audio file 😄
Hello. Your pronunciation is decent. You have a noticeable accent, but your words are clear and you correct your mistakes. You mostly just need to work on your speed and vocabulary. You speak slowly, but that's normal for someone at your level.
Ok thanks
Hi @sage glen @red cliff ... could you help me with my pronunciation pls. Thaaanks
@earnest seal
now I suggest you listen to the audio while reading the following text
The following suggestions are based on the assumption that you are aiming for an American pronunciation. Even if that's not the case, these tips should still noticeably improve your pronunciation.
The suggestions are structured as follows:
Consonants
Explanation:
Consonants are sounds produced by obstructing the airflow in the vocal tract (mainly the mouth).
Examples: p, t, d.
Notice how the voice pauses slightly when producing these sounds — for instance, in words like pink, top, and down.
Mistakes (Consonants):
1. "D" sound — as in "wondered"
The "d" sound was mispronounced, likely influenced by the "d" sound of your native language.
This could make your speech slightly harder for native speakers to understand.
Words affected: day, wondered, dusty, filled.
(Please refer to the attached audio recording for a demonstration.)
2. "T" sound — as in "history"
Similarly, the "t" sound was different compared to American pronunciation, again, likely due to influence from your native language.
Words affected: attic, history, dusty.
(The attached audio recording will demonstrate the difference.)```
there is more
Your other consonants are generally fine (although not fully native-like, which only matters if you're aiming for full mastery of the American accent).
The most noticeable issues were with the T and D sounds, which could create a problem when understanding your speech.
Vowels
Explanation:
Vowels are sounds produced without obstructing the airflow.
Examples:
e as in beat,
i as in hit,
a as in hate.
(Note: There's a more detailed way to describe vowels and consonants using a system called the IPA, but for simplicity, I won't be using it here.)
Mistakes (Vowels):
1. "E" sound — as in "feeling"
The "E" sound was mostly correct but too short.
(Refer to the attached audio for a clearer example.)
2. "i" sound — as in "history"
The "i" sound was mostly correct but sounded slightly too long.
It should be a short vowel.
3. "ou" sound — as in "hotel"
The "ou" sound was understandable but slightly off.
(The attached recording demonstrates the correct version.)
Verdict (Vowels):
Your other vowels are fine overall.
The ones that could use extra attention are:
"E" as in beat,
"i" as in hit,
"ou" as in go or hotel.
Other Sounds
If you are aiming for mastery of English pronunciation, here are some additional suggestions:
1. "R" Sound
The R sound is a strong feature of American English.
There are about 7 types of R sounds. example, r, or, er, air,
Some mistakes appeared in words like her and worked.
2. "TH" Sounds
English has two types of "th" sounds:
Voiced (as in this)
Voiceless (as in think)
Mistakes were noticed in words like grandfather and grandmother.
bypassing the system
These words were mispronounced during the recording:
genealogy
learn
curious
chapel
local
Final Thoughts
slow down, it seems like you were reading too fast and pronounce words properly and give them enough time.
If you focus on practicing the points mentioned above, you should see significant improvement.
There is, of course, much more to explore in American pronunciation but this should help you a lot.
Keep up the great work!```

Interesting because the schwa was a bit more open
Which is pretty common in spanish
Along in european languages.

I'm working on it... The T, D, Th (I didn't know that there are 2 th kind of pronunciations until few weeks 😅)... The fucking deep L... So, I have to work hehehe
Oh yeah, although the difference between the th sounds is pretty simple
One is voiced and one is unvoiced
The deep L I am nor sure if it exists in spanish but it is an easy sound to learn regardless
The tongue placement is exactly the same in both sounds
voiced th and d sound really close to each other
some natives in some dialects literally pronounce th as d
just voiced one tho
i pronounce voiced th as d lol
some Scots do voiceless th as h

In 2024, the number of babies born in South Korea increased for the first time in nine years. The change is welcome news for a country that is dealing with serious population problems.
South Korea’s statistics agency said recently that 238,300 babies were born last year, an increase of 8,300 from a year earlier.
Congrats you’re now a step closer to merging canto accent into your English speech lmao
i used to speak fast, but i would often forget to pronounce some sounds. now, i make sure to pronounce everything i read.

I'm trying to type up a transcript of your voice message based on what I'm hearing. I've removed the bits where you've corrected yourself. But there are a couple words I can't quite figure out. Can you fill in the blanks where I've put "???"?
Hi, that's me again. Nova, 17, female.
Today I woke at 6am and got ready to went to my school. These day I have ??? exams. Today I had a bilogy and math exam. They were good although I didn't study a long time. And when I was in my school, I tooks many photos with my friends and my teachers becuase this is the last year in my school so I was trying to collect memories with people ??? them. So yeah. And then I came back to home and I slept for a long time, about 6 hours, because I stayed up late yesterday which I was solving my math homework for my school. So that's my day. I know my sleep system is a little bit bad but it's fine. One day left until the ??? exams end and my sleep system will be good.
Thanks for listening. I thanks everyone who helps me to improve my English skill, English speaking. I wanted to listen to your advices ???. Thanks.
Once I've figured out all the words, I can give you more complete feedback.
I heard "with people, I love them"
"One day left until the ... exams"
Makes me think the person said "monthly exams"
1- I have months - exams
2- ppl l love them
3-months exams end
4- advices about me
1,2,3 were easy to understand for me. Maybe this is because I am not a native speaker
Hi, that's me again. Nova, 17, female.
It might be better to say "it's me again"
Today I woke at 6am and got ready to went to my school.
you should say "got ready to go to my school" since the verb should be in its infinitive form
months - exams
I actually have no idea what this means, perhaps it should be "monthly exams" but I could be wrong
They were good although I didn't study a long time.
It might be better to say "I didn't spend much time studying" or "I didn't study much"
And when I was in my school
Maybe you should say "While I was at school"
I tooks many photos
This should be "I took many photos"
this is the last year in my school
I think you probably mean "this is my final year in school"
so I was trying to collect memories with people I love them
I would suggest saying "and I wanted something to remember the people I love most"
And then I came back to home and I slept for a long time, about 6 hours
"And when I came back home**,** I slept for about 6 hours"
I stayed up late yesterday which I was solving my math homework for my school
"I stayed up late yesterday doing my math homework"
sleep system
"sleep schedule"
advices
"advice", this is an uncountable noun
Ok, thanks a lot
very helpful thank u

Hey, there. I am a senior software engineer with 8+ years of experience. I recently developed the Teamly web app, a tool that helps teams improve communication and collaboration with features like real-time chat. I specialize in creating high-quality, user-friendly software that delivers real business results.

What You Get
A share of the profit – passive income
If I get work in Europe or US, you know – pay is between 5000$ - 8000$. I could earn 5000$, maybe more. After some years, if my role grows in the company, my pay will grow too – from 8000$ to 10000$, maybe more. If your share is 20%, think now - how much would you get?
Quick tip: Help with call support and you'll earn 50% of the income I make.
Your passive income = My income * your share / 100%
Ex: $1000 (per month) = $5000 * 20% / 100%, $12000 (one year)
After the growth:
$2000 (per month) = $10000 * 20% / 100%, $24000 (one year)

does anyone know the app Elevenreader and can pls tell me if the english pronunciation on there is perfect or really good or just okay? Id like to learn the pronunciation there from the texts and books i wanna listen to 😅

Lovely audio
You only messed up didn't do

I can't help you with that 😵💫
Sorry I know this message was ages ago but how do you type your words like that?
No worries
You add this ``` at the start of the text and at the end
Something like this
Ahh ic thanks!

My honest opinion is u have an Indian accent, so if you're actually from India I suggest you learn the British accent since it's closer to your voice, good luck and have fun mate
Is it naazee or nat-zee?
The first
If we're talking about nazi, then personally I'd say the 2nd
How
Ok, Are there other words like that word that drop the letter?
When a T comes between 2 consonants it'll most likely drop
Like the word important
You drop the first t
Can you say
"It's important" and " a little bit" and "what about you" ?
I mean, can you record these sentences in your voice so I can tell the difference and imitate your pronunciation?
Sure
Thanks, I will wait you
It's "I will wait for you"

I want to add my two cents: It might seem obvious, but once I became comfortable enough to read transcriptions, it was definitely a great help for improving my pronunciation. Although it is expected that you do other things like listening to live speech as well. Personally, I find transcription is useful for fine-tuning word pronunciation
Do you see it as a suitable tool for beginners?
how's my pronunciations

Other than monotony, It was good
i already sent you a friend req
Hi
monogamy
Idk whether I should ask it here (it is a bit dumb question) bu do you think that reviewing how to pronounce some words correctly over and over again useless?
On my Youtube channel, I saved 10-15 videos on how to pronounce certain words on my Playlist and I review them over and over again and it got a bit repetitive.
i think it's great you have something to do with English that keeps you engaged 🙂
I think it's a very good way to improve ur pronunciation 👍🏻
keep going
Hmm
In short,
mouth movement ( with syllables strange with you)
How to do? Watch how their mouth move in simulaton and follow
How to practise? Shadow speak (repeat similarly after natives)
Yeah very good.. I'm try to do that
Well, it is just that I realize that I review the same thing 20, 30 times. May be I should find another words to study (I mean their pronunciation).
Thanks a lot.
Last year I found an American lecturer on the Internet, and he fixed a lot of my pronunciation mistakes. I am grateful to him even though we are no longer in contact.
That's great, it helps a lot to speak and practice with someone on a regular basis, It's very different than practicing alone.. It forces u to put ur thoughts into meaningful sentences, challenging and funny sometimes
Hi!
How do you pronounce superfluous?
In that regard, wouldn't it be better to record books or just sentences? It has to be more fun if it's your thing.
can’t you just Google it
Wouldn't it be cool to hear some other ways native speakers talk?
Although i fine with that I can find on Internet

I studying grammar but when I start to speak, I forget the grammar
I don't know anything about grammar
It just came to me
And thought
Since I don't think about grammar in my native when speaking
Same goes for any other language

Oh, I didn't know she/he is from Brazil.
Hoje em dia, com IA, dá pra
ser constantemente corrigido. Não precisa nem encontrar mais um nativo, só se for para coisas mais avançadas talvez. O que eu gosto de fazer, é justamente tentar escrever alguns textos na IA e mandar ela corrigir. Então, eu pego as frases que errei e coloco no Ankidroid, marco como um erro que cometi e consta mente repito a frase até ficar gravado a versão correta. I do it with English, Spanish, and other languages I've been learning, and it has helped a lot so far.
AI comes in handy for learning languages.
nunca pensei em usar IA
Why not?
I can sense the tension in your voice, knowing that you're trying hard
You did great, try to relax though

I did it, a gamified template. I love building Notion templates.
I think you are just best not trying to do a British accent on this word, as it is highly parodied and it serves no purpose in trying to be smart about the word.
I'm sorry for this long time, I I didn't feel the time, thanks for anyone listen to it to the end
If there any mistakes, pls tell me.

Never in my entire life I've joined a voice channel on Discord, cuz I'm too shy.
And yeah it's a good idea to find a peer at least close to your age.
What ?!
I need to practice my speaking, that's why I installed discord dude
And How will you improve your speaking if you don't talk to anyone?
The only mispronunciation you made is solution
But what's more important is phrasing
You need to watch some yt videos or listen to podcasts for better phrasing
Volume's too low
Well, thanks
No problem
Tbh your British pronunciation isn’t quite right, im in the uk
Your American one is correct tho
Don’t worry you’re not alone. Every time I finally get myself to join one I either can’t keep up with what others are saying, don’t know when to speak or too nervous to speak
Even in my native language I sometimes have the same problem
in practice it often just ends up being a huge mess of many people speaking at once/interrupting/many new ones joining etc. the only time I enjoyed VC was when I talked to one person in a 2 people VC channel
accents can be messy too, cuz if you have, let's say, 4 people, from different backgrounds, then even if you understand them all, they may not understand each other
Maybe you understand someone's indian accent, second person's chinese accent, and third person's russian accent, but they may really not understand each other
lol, it ends up messy very quickly
Guys whenever I speak for too long my mouth get filled with saliva and i always have to stop to digest it and then speak is this happening to me or anybody else dealing with that. What should I do
True
Ahh right, I have trouble understanding some accents as well
This is common, especially Indian accent
Yeah, When I was a beginner, one of the hardest accent to understand was Indian.
Now I can understand them almost perfectly
I still have problem with British accent tho.
Hello
How can I stop talking like a Brazilian?🥸
Reborn
🥸
Só fazer a técnica de imitar fielmente o jeito que um nativo fala aquela frase/palavra que você deseja, usa o youglish
okei
Falar exatamente igual nativo não dá, mas é só imitar o melhor que pode, não tem o que fazer mesmo
brazilian accent cute af tf you talkin about
Quanto mais estudo inglês mais percebo que não sei
